RABBI MELMAN’S MINUTES I am sitting beneath the sun in the Jerusalem sky. This holy city represents so much to all of us and to have spent the last week with 18 members of Beth Shalom’s Men’s Club has not only been a remarkable trip, but a true privilege. Our group, made up of both first-time visitors to Israel and those of us who have been here numerous times, has shared experiences that will remain with us for the rest of our lives. We have come as members of the CBS family to learn, explore, delve deep into the issues facing Israel and our people and grapple with many of the tensions that exist for the modern State of Israel as well as the Jewish people. Leading a trip is far different than simply being a tourist. And, as a rabbi, helping to lead congregants through our most sacred places allows me to see things through other people’s eyes. To watch a first-time visitor see the Kotel, the beach in Tel Aviv, the places of the mystics in Tzfat, or even take their first bite of an Israeli falafel or shwarma is tremendous. It truly brings a smile to my face. And to watch return visitors reconnect with Israel, perhaps in new ways, is inspiring. Israel is a complex place. When talking about the very sensitive issues that face the country you will often hear, “It’s difficult” – and it is. There are no easy answers to solve many of Israel’s complex problems. As we have watched the tensions along the Gaza border escalate, or talked about the words of the Chief Rabbi, who offered controversial words after the horrible events at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh, or explored the economic issues that face many Israelis, we have gained a much better understanding of our Jewish homeland. One of the many things I reminded the group is that we, as Jews, have just as much right to call Israel home as those who live there. In fact, I once had a spirited conversation with Tzipi Livni about the fact that I didn’t feel, as a Diaspora Jew, I had the right to criticize the government of Israel. She told me that it was my duty as a Jew, no matter where I lived to speak up when I saw something that I did not agree with. There is definitely part of me that has changed my thinking, especially as it relates to Israel/Diaspora relations and in particular the relationship with the non-Orthodox streams of our religion. This, and so much more, have all been part of our Israel experience this time around. An important piece I have tried to instill in our group is that we are more than tourists. In the Cardo (in the Jewish Quarter) I shared with them the poem Tourists, by Yehuda Amichai and reminded them that we are all part of Israel’s story. Visits of condolence is all we get from them. They squat at the Holocaust Memorial, They put on grave faces at the Wailing Wall And they laugh behind heavy curtains In their hotels. They have their pictures taken Together with our famous dead At Rachel’s Tomb and Herzl’s Tomb And on Ammunition Hill. They weep over our sweet boys And lust after our tough girls And hang up their underwear To dry quickly In cool, blue bathrooms.

DECEMBER 2018/JANUARY 2019 • VOLUME 67 ISSUE 37

Once I sat on the steps by a gate at David’s Tower, I placed my two heavy baskets at my side. A group of tourists was standing around their guide and I became their target marker. “You see that man with the baskets? Just right of his head there’s an arch from the Roman period. Just right of his head.” “But he’s moving, he’s moving!” I said to myself: redemption will come only if their guide tells them, “You see that arch from the Roman period? It’s not important: but next to it, left and down a bit, there sits a man who’s bought fruit and vegetables for his family.”

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Debbie Solomon

As a group of men from our Men's Club head off to Israel with Rabbi Melman this month, I'm of course jealous, but also very excited. Anytime we can bring more people to Israel and experience all that she has to offer, it’s an amazing thing.

I say this knowing that I have only gone to Israel once in my life when I was 12. I too, went with our very own Congregation, as well as a few friends. I still remember the Galilee girls, as Rabbi Wolkin called us, giggling together! Riding on a camel with my best friend, insisting on eating falafel in Jerusalem even though I didn't feel well, and learning about my heritage. I am grateful for the Ta’am Yisrael program and the fact that I was able to send both of my children to Israel in 8th grade. They both desire to go back to Israel and my daughter even takes Hebrew in High School. As we approach Thanksgiving, and not too far after Chanukah, we are reminded of times to be thankful for what we have, who we are, and how we have persevered, both as Jews and as Americans. I am thankful for Israel and what this tiny parcel has not only brought to Jews, but to the greater world in terms of farming, technology and so much more. I know my goal is to do what I can to get back to Israel. I hope to see all of you there soon!

CANTOR’S NOTES Cantor Stoehr

MUDITA

I came across this word and concept only recently. I was discussing some of the projects in which I am engaged and my friend said, “Do you get paid for that”? About several of the projects I replied, “No, I just like doing these things. I feel good when I get to help in this way, so I guess it’s kind of self-serving. I guess that’s a struggle between Yetzer HaTov and Yetzer HaRah, the Good (altruistic) Inclination and Evil (selfish) Inclination which lies within each of us.” Mudita is a word from Sanskrit that has no counterpart in English. It connotes joy in the good fortune of others. It is a significant part of the philosophy of Buddhism. According to Wikipedia, the site suggests that in “defining mudita, we might consider its opposites. One of those is jealousy. Another is schadenfreude, a word frequently borrowed from German that means taking pleasure in the misfortune of others.” As CBS has joined Refugee One in helping some of the recent new immigrants to the US, specifically Chicago, I believe this principle applies. Mudita is found in the doing of Gemilut Chesed, acts of loving-kindness. It can also be found in our work with the Food Pantry and JUF Uptown Café and many others aspects of life in which CBS members and those in our Mitzvah Committee engage each and every day. “While compassion is, or should be, the inspiration for it, unselfish joy should be its boon companion .… When active compassion and unselfish joy go together, it will be less likely that works of service turn into dead routine performed indifferently. Indifference, listlessness, boredom are said to be the 'distant enemies' of mudita. They can be vanquished by an alliance of compassion and unselfish joy… Nowadays, moral exhortations fall increasingly on deaf ears, whether they are motivated theologically or otherwise…. Hence modern youth will increasingly feel that such "moralizings" are not their concern… In this troubled world of ours, there are plenty of opportunities for thoughts and deeds of compassion; but there seem to be all too few for sharing in others' joy. Hence it is necessary for us to create new opportunities for unselfish joy, by the active practice of loving-kindness and compassion in deeds, words, and thought.” Nyanaponika Thera As we enjoy December and January and the various Holidays and Season of Good Cheer and Hope for a fresh start, I hope you will give thought to this concept of Mudita (or in our native language, Gemilut Chesed). We are told the cities of Sodom and Gemorrah were destroyed due to sinat chinam, baseless hatred, and God decided there was no hope for the city. In the same vein it is suggested that the destruction of the Holy Temple of Jerusalem was allowed to be destroyed because society had fallen into the same trap of behavior. Civility had been lost. As we move forward in this new year I hope we will give thought to our own country, city and neighborhoods and try to do all we can to rid hatred within our lives, using our own personal influences to try and bring an attitude of ahavat chinam, loving others freely without judgement, to the fore. 4

Congregation Beth Shalom’s BOOK CHATS Presents Momento Park by Mark Sarvas Wednesday, February 6, 2019 7:30 p.m. Congregation Beth Shalom – 3433 Walters Avenue - Northbrook

Momento Park begins with an unexpected call to Matt Santos, a middle-aged, moderately successful actor, who learns that a multi-million dollar painting, “Budapest Street Scene” by Hungarian artist, Ervin Kalman, may have been looted from his family during WWII. To recover it he must repair his relationship with his father, unearth his family history and restore his connection to Judaism. Momento Park is about the Hungarian Jewish experience, and is common to any immigrant family where history is the thing everyone is trying to forget but lives on in the present. Come join us and bring a friend to chat about the 2018 One Book/One Community selection, Momento Park. Contact Linda Gold at lindangold@comcast.net or call 847/509-1978 to reserve your seats. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Stacy Ybarra

Our students have been working very hard on their Hebrew. We are having a mid-year ceremony to celebrate their achievements! Third through fifth grades will have their ceremony on Tuesday, December 18th from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Our sixth and seventh grades will have their ceremony on Tuesday, December 18th from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m.

Moving Traditions We are one of the first to launch a new Moving Traditions program for sixth and seventh graders and their families. Our synagogue has been chosen to partner with Moving Traditions (www.movingtraditions.org) to pioneer a new and exciting approach to b’nai mitzvah that connects Jewish wisdom to the interpersonal and social elements of this coming-of-age ritual. This is our second year adding Moving Traditions’ family education and pre-teen sessions to our b’nai mitzvah preparation. Through games, activities and discussion, the Moving Traditions sessions—created by rabbis and social workers—will help parents and pre-teens explore what it means to be a guest and a host, how to navigate peer pressure, social media, and the experience of being the center of attention, as well as other social-emotional challenges and joys associated with the b’nai mitzvah process. Our sixth and seventh graders will participate in several sessions just for them during the normal Religious School classes. In addition, we will invite our sixth grade parents to join our clergy and teachers on: Tuesday, January 8th from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. and Tuesday, April 30th from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. “Pre-teens today are confronted with tremendous academic and social pressures at an earlier age, magnified by the prism of social media,” says Deborah Meyer, Moving Traditions’ Founder and CEO. “Our new program for sixth and seventh graders and their families lays a critical foundation for healthy family communication as children enter the teen years. We’re very excited to partner with 30 synagogues across the country to launch our new b’nai mitzvah program.”

Tracy Safron Suggests: Husbands and Other Sharp Objects: A Novel by Marilyn Simon Rothstein is the hilarious story of Marcy Hammer and her life in transition. Marcy has lived a “careful” life in Connecticut for more than thirty years. She was married to the same man, living in the same house and even using the same brands of detergent, deodorant and toilet paper since leaving her parents’ home. Marcy is now separated from Harvey and she has no plans to reconcile with him. Harvey fathered a child with another woman and that is the catalyst for their impending divorce. Marcy’s mother has recently passed away, and her three adult children are ensconced in their own lives. On the bright side, she has two very good friends, an interesting job, and a wonderful new man in her life. Marcy has no idea her daughter Amanda is dating anyone and suddenly Amanda is engaged. The family becomes absorbed with wedding tumult. Adding to the mayhem Amanda longs to see her parents back together. Harvey wants that too. Can he win Marcy over? Marcy is a strong and thoughtful woman and her experiences are relatable and endearing. Rothstein’s novel is comical and also thought provoking. This is a story about family, friendship and life’s ups and downs. Laughter pulls the reader in but it’s Rothstein’s amazing characters and plot that make Husbands and Other Sharp Objects difficult to put down. Go to bethshalomnb.org/tracy-safron-suggests for a complete list of Tracy Safron Suggestions.

SISTERHOOD Leatte Gelfeld

Thank you to everyone that came out and supported our Holiday Boutique as a shopper or a volunteer! It was incredibly successful and this would not have been possible without the months of hard work by our chairwomen. Audrey LeCavalier, Karyn Liss, Joyce Rabinowitz, Robyn Rosengard and Jackie Zelkowitz, once again you did an amazing job on this event.

Every year, Sisterhood packs and distributes Chanukah bags to the children in our Religious School and less fortunate children in the community. Thank you to Jill Hartzman for coordinating this great project. We will not be having a December meeting because there are other great synagogue programs we would love for you to attend. December and January are slower for Sisterhood with the exception of our CBS Knits group but we will be kicking off February with the return of our Sisterhood Shabbat Friday Night Dinner and Service on Friday, February 1st. We encourage you to come for both but if the timing does not work, come for one or the other! I wish you and your families a very Happy Chanukah and a Happy New Year!

MEN’S CLUB Dan Sher

I am writing this article while packing for our Men’s Club trip to Israel and by the time you read this I will be back from the trip – and I’m sure it will be an amazing time! I would like to publicly thank Rabbi Melman for everything he did to make this trip possible. Before I was even Men’s Club President I went to Rabbi Melman and told him I really wanted to make this happen and we did it. Rabbi Melman put together an amazing itinerary that was interesting to people no matter how many times you have been to Israel. We brought nineteen people to Israel including three men who had never been to Israel before. Feel free to stop me and ask me about the trip or if you are planning a trip and want some ideas reach out as well.

This being the combined December/January article starts what we call “our busy season” at Congregation Beth Shalom. On Sunday, December 2nd we are doing two different Chanukah Bashes – a fun breakfast program from Birth-Pre-K in the morning during Religious School and an afternoon program after Religious School for K-5th grade. Come kickoff Chanukah with us! In January, our first breakfast on January 13 will feature the Anti-Defamation League’s Regional Director of the Greater Chicago/Upper Midwest area, Lonnie Nasatir. Lonnie joined us several years ago for an engaging discussion and, with everything going on in America, we thought it would be a good time to bring him back for this important discussion. The following Sunday, January 20, as part of Diversity Weekend at Congregation Beth Shalom, we have invited Imam Hazim Fazlic from The Islamic Cultural Center of Greater Chicago to join us and talk about how we can all come together. January 27th ends the month with our annual JUF Brunch featuring Distinguished Speaker Yochi Dreazen. We will be having such great speakers in January – please come join us at these or any of our programs. MAH JONGG CARD APPLICATION It is once again time to order new Mah Jongg cards for 2019-2020. If you have ordered before and a name or address from your last year’s list has changed during the past year, PLEASE note that when filling out the application. Applications and money MUST be received by JANUARY 15, 2019. Thank you, in advance, for making this ongoing project such a success.
