AV/ELUL 5781| AUGUST 2021| VOLUME 93 ISSUE 63

RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS On most electronic devices, there is a process to reset the device to the way it was when it was brand new. I find this reset button both comforting and terrifying. It is comforting to know that no matter how badly I mess it up, I can always put it back to the way it was before. However, it’s also terrifying, because the second I use the reset button, I know that I will lose all of the changes I have made to the device since I got it. As we move into August, it feels like we’re on the verge of hitting the reset button on our lives. Schools are mostly back to normal, people who were working from home are returning to their offices, and at CBS, we are back to in-person daily minyan, in-person meetings, and although religious school will be a little different, students and teachers will be here in the building. We’re also coming up on our annual spiritual “reset” moment - the High Holidays. Even though our High Holiday services will be a little different this year, we should still use them as an opportunity to “reset” ourselves for the coming year. We have missteps to correct, priorities to re-evaluate, and goals to set. However, I’m not sure that “reset” is the best description of what we should be doing this year. While it is true that on a spiritual level the High Holidays give us the opportunity to start Rabbi Ferratier

over with a clean slate, we can’t just pretend that the last year and a half never happened. Even though, in some ways, time felt frozen during the pandemic, the truth is that the world continued to turn. We welcomed babies and mourned losses. Our loved ones started new jobs or lost their old ones. People lived, laughed and loved. No one is exactly the same person they were when the pandemic began. Literally and figuratively, we can’t fit ourselves back into the same clothes we were wearing in March of 2020! We may not be able to completely reset ourselves, but it is worth thinking about what we can reset moving forward. Which relationships became stronger over the last months? Which relationships need a little strengthening after months in isolation? Did CBS help you get through these months? How might your involvement in the Jewish community change now that it is no longer limited to participation through Zoom and live streaming? The High Holidays always provide an opportunity for reflection and introspection, but this year it feels a little more urgent. I’ll look forward to seeing you back in-person very soon! May the coming year bring all of us health and commitment to resetting ourselves and our world!

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Bob Spector

Shalom Chaverim, I feel so honored, privileged, and truly blessed to be your President over the next two years. It was never part of my intended life journey to become your President, but as my wife, Chris, constantly reminds me, “you never can say no to Beth Shalom.” I have learned over the years to never make promises because life sometimes gets in the way of keeping them, but it is my intention to offer you to the best of my ability the leadership you all so richly deserve as we navigate together through what will hopefully be a post pandemic world.

I have been frequently asked if I have a theme or agenda for the next two years. If you have followed my Keruv Korner column over the years you know that I am a strong advocate for Tolerance, Openness, Patience, Understanding, Acceptance, Compassion, and Health (physical and emotional). I am not sure if that qualifies as an agenda. I aspire that we continue on a path paved with stones of warmth, respect, and kindness, and I believe if we do this, they will come. It has been pointed out that as painful as it was to close our building in March of 2020, that decision was unambiguously clear and necessary given the rapidly growing pandemic throughout the United States. Our staff and lay leadership did a phenomenal job of keeping Congregation Beth Shalom open as a community spiritually, religiously, and programmatically through the use of technology. These online opportunities allowed us to stay connected to each other as well as to our loved ones. But I think we would all agree that this is not the same as being together in-person. In June we held our first in-person Board of Trustees meeting since March of last year. We were scheduled to start right after minyan. Generally, our Board members are particularly good about starting on time, but that night 10-15 minutes went by, and people were still chatting. I was growing a bit impatient, but then the big DUH hits me (even Psychologists can be a bit dense at times). For many, this was the first time they were able to see each other for 16 months. The joy in the room was intoxicating. It is for this reason that our staff are working tirelessly to re-open our doors for meetings, social events, and services including the use of state-of-the-art technology for those who are not ready or who are not able to join us in-person. Unfortunately, there is no road map for this transition because the science is not exact, and our individual psychology of feeling comfortable in large group settings may not necessarily evolve at the same pace science may allow. We have an in-person plan for the High Holidays that I believe will capture the essence and meaningfulness you have come to expect (as well as live streaming at CBS). There will be many logistical challenges to make this work. The success of our communal spiritual journey this year is dependent upon our ability to work together with patience, flexibility, and compassion. As we learned last year, different does not mean less than. I would be remiss if I did not express my appreciation for Tanya Solomon’s leadership over these past two unprecedented years. Tanya - thank you for your support and guidance as we worked together in making a seamless leadership transition, and for everything you have given and will continue to give our Beth Shalom community. I will continue to support the core traditions and values of our Past Presidents as well as to add an occasional wrinkle of my own (stay tuned for my articles in the coming months). I so look forward to meeting you, both individually and collectively. I truly expect that we will share a wonderful journey together these next two years. B’Shalom, Bob

CANTOR’S NOTES Cantor Stoehr

August 9th is my birthday and I’ve received two nice ‘gifts’ which I want to share with you. (If it were my wife’s cheesecake, I may not have shared.)

For this coming 2021-22 calendar year I have been appointed Chairman of the Annual International Cantors Convention, to be held in Los Angeles. It will be the 75th anniversary of the Assembly which comes with both great excitement and responsibility. We know from our own CBS 50th anniversary celebration a few years ago, and other such milestones, a moment such as this is filled with historic retrospectives and laying building blocks for the future of the organization. For the CA, we will engage Hollywood personalities, Judaic scholars, and celebrate the history of Jewish music in Los Angeles, past and present. It will be the first time in the past few years that we will have been able to gather in person, which is a special moment in and of itself. The best times are often the Late Night programs, which allow many colleagues to stand in an open mic setting and perform their newest compositions, sing familiar Opera arias or Classical Hazzanut, and also some humorous risqué stand-up routines. In past years, we have modified our conventions and instead created Missions to Poland, Spain and Germany, and this year we were planning a trip to Italy, but those plans needed to, once again, be postponed for another year. If you love this sort of musical and educational programming, consider coming to LA for a couple of days next May. The second honor is also related to leadership. In 2005 – 2007 I served as the President of the Cantors Assembly, the largest body of Cantors in the world. I was delighted to mature alongside my colleagues and fellow officers, and also help the CA to evolve our breadth of touchpoints in the Jewish and secular worlds. I believe my work within the CA has enhanced my skills and knowledge of my profession and created for me, and thus for CBS, great networking with colleagues who have brought into our synagogue, wonderful entertainment and teaching. I have now been elected as the President of the Cantors Assembly Foundation Inc. This body of leaders is comprised primarily of the Past Presidents of the Cantors Assembly, as well as two select CA members at large. The goal of the Foundation is to underwrite and otherwise fund music projects. Music scholars, creative thinkers, those engaged in modern inter-religious studies, and others who deal in the circle of Jewish music preservation or programming with outreach to college a capella groups and the like, associate with us via grant proposals. Typically, allocations are made for scholarship assistance to students enrolled in a bona fide cantorial school, to those engaged with research in the field of Jewish music and for the publication of materials that instruct laypersons how to lead liturgical services. By approving such requests we work to further the impact of Jewish music in the world and to encourage another generation of Jewish musicians, composers and others interested to continue to create new music and, through scholarship, safeguard elements of Jewish music history. As our Jewish world prepares for the High Holy days with the prayers of Selichot on August 28th, I think about how I have been honored to co-lead Congregation Beth Shalom for now my 34th year. The decisions I make in selecting liturgy and musical settings for our prayer services is my own way of “underwriting” and safeguarding our CBS tradition. I’ve been so touched when some post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah student comes up to me, years later, at a wedding or life cycle event, and remarks to me, “It’s so nice to hear you again, your voice is the essence of the sounds of my youth”. I am so lucky to have found a career, and a synagogue, which has afforded me such fulfillment. I look forward to this year at CBS and, please God, many more together.

Everyone will have the ability to attend our events in-person or through Zoom. Our Opening Luncheon will be on Wednesday, October 13th with an amazing speaker. MEN’S CLUB Hello Congregation Beth Shalom….. My name is Steve Lessman, Co-President of Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club. Along with Andy Wagner, we will be Co-Presidents of the Men’s Club the next two years. We have a lot of exciting events planned and some surprises along the way. If you are not aware, Andy and I have a tough act to follow. In June, the Federation of Jewish Men’s Club held their biannual convention online, and Congregation Beth Shalom took home FIVE Gold Torch Awards including the Gold for the Best Overall Programs. We were the only club among more than 200 Clubs in the country to win this award. Mazel Tov to President Steven Elisco and his executive board for leading us during the last two years and receiving the recognition our club deserves during the year of the Pandemic.

As President of CBS Men’s Club from 1995-1997, I used my monthly bulletin article to introduce you to the men who make up the Executive Board and Board of Directors and their unique life story. I plan on doing that again over the next two years as well. I want to begin with by introducing myself and Andy to many of the newer members of CBS that I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. Born and raised in Chicago, I attended Mather High School and Northern Illinois University. Married to my wonderful wife, Ann, we have four children, three married and one to be married this September. We also are proud grandparents of four boys. I have been in the advertising industry world most of my career selling advertising on radio and television stations and, for 20 years, represented most of the Chicago Sports Professional teams radio stations selling sponsorships in the games on the radio. I currently work for WCPT Radio in Chicago and other media companies as well. My hobbies include PA announcing at High School and College sporting events including basketball, volleyball and football. My involvement in Congregation Beth Shalom began in 1975 after my dad passed, and I spent my evenings at CBS saying Kaddish. Soon I got involved in Men’s Club, became President and then got involved in the Midwest Region of FJMC and am Past President of the Midwest Region. Andy and his son, Brandon, joined CBS more recently, in December 2016. This was after moving from Oklahoma City, where he lived for 11 years and was very involved with Emanuel Synagogue. Andy grew up in Milwaukee at Congregation Beth Israel and, for many years, went to Camp Interlaken JCC. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for college (saxophone performance) and medical school. Andy now practices reproductive genetics at Northwestern University since moving here. He is following presidential traditions in the family with Brandon having been CBS USY President in 2019-2020, and his father, Alan, was Men’s Club President at Beth Israel in the 80’s. His hobbies include playing the saxophone almost nightly on Facebook and in two community bands and being amazed at Brandon’s many accomplishments. Andy and I are very excited to be Co-Presidents of Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club. CBS Men’s Club is filled with a long history and special men who make this club great. We look forward to continuing this success and developing strong leaders to carry on the CBS Men’s Club traditions.

Tracy Safron Suggests The Forest of Vanishing Stars is Kristin Harmel’s fascinating new novel. The plot is based partially on true World War II survival stories and centers on a woman named Yona who lives in the forest. It is 1922 when two-year-old Yona is stolen from her crib in the Berlin home of her wealthy German parents. Yona’s kidnapper, Jerusza, is an 82year-old clairvoyant who lives in the forests of Eastern Europe. Jerusza kidnaps Yona believing Yona has been born for the sake of repairing the world-tikkun olam. She foresees Yona’s parents as a threat to Yona’s future acts of heroism. Jerusza takes Yona to the Nalibocka Forest and teaches her how to survive and thrive in the wilderness. When Jerusza dies in 1942 Yona loses the only human contact she has ever known. Yona is shocked when she realizes she is no longer alone in the forest. She encounters Jewish refugees escaping Nazi atrocities and initially doesn’t know how to interact with these trespassers. She knows only of a struggle against nature, and nothing of war. Once Yona learns of the horrors these Jews have confronted she vows to help them survive. As she teaches the refugees how to establish lives in the forest, Yona learns about love and bonds between people. Unknowingly, danger awaits Yona outside the forest as a secret from her past threatens everything she has established. The Forest of Vanishing Stars is compelling and gripping. As Yona constantly risks her own life to protect others, she becomes a luminary.

CBS Memorial Plaques If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified remembrance is through a Memorial Plaque. Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and yahrzeit date, is mounted on the tablet in the Moseson Alcove or Beit Midrash. It is lit on the Shabbat of the week of the yahrzeit, on the day of the yahrzeit and on the four festivals during the year when Yizkor is recited. Call Maria Catezone (847-498-4100 x26) for information or to order a plaque. The following families have dedicated memorial plaques in memory of their loved ones.
