NISAN/IYAR 5780 | APRIL 2020 | VOLUME 80 ISSUE 50

A Message From The CBS Executive Director Dear CBS Congregants, We are learning everyday about COVID-19 and how to keep ourselves and our families safe. We continue to spend the days watching the news, listening to our Governor, the experts at the CDC and what is happening in our local community. Over the next few days and weeks Rabbi Melman, Rabbi Ferratier, Cantor Stoehr, our CBS President Tanya Solomon, myself and others will be making wellness calls to each household to learn what is needed in our CBS Community. Please feel free to reach out to us anytime. We have many congregants that are willing to help those in need, as well. Although our CBS building is closed to congregants, most of the CBS staff are here planning and creating programs for our membership through our NEW CBS Live! virtual online programming. Working with our Board of Trustees, our focus is finding and understanding the needs of our congregation by reaching out to our membership. We are currently streaming daily minyan and all Shabbat Services which can be seen from the CBS website. We also have begun to stream select adult education classes, youth programs and soon special programs for our members and for the greater community.  As your CBS Executive Director, I am making decision based on what I know, not on what I assume is going to happen. As circumstances change we will need to adjust accordingly. Most importantly, we will always follow the direction of our local and state leaders.  Stacy Ybarra is creating a plan for our Religious School that will come your way after Spring Break, giving you time to adjust to online learning from the public schools for your children.  Eric Golberg is reaching out to our Youth Groups with many programming options to keep them busy and connected with each other while at home.  Leann Blue is working with our educators and clergy in live streaming more of our Adult Education programming.  Cantor Raquel and Susan Stoehr continue to tutor our B’nai Mitzvah students via phone and Skype.  The CBS Staff is hard at work; Susan, Deanne, Maria, Eli, Brenda, Estelle and Lisa have been priceless. We are so lucky to have an incredible and strong staff managing everything they do for all of you at CBS.  Rabbi Melman, Cantor Stoehr and Rabbi Ferratier are meeting every day, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day to discuss how we can support each of you, our CBS Family, through life cycle events, Shabbat services, education and spirituality. Most of all, they are a phone call away with all and any questions or concerns. There is a very good chance that what I am sharing with you today could change in the next minute, hour or day. Just remember during these trying times, the staff and lay leadership at CBS are here for you. Call us, text us, email us, whatever you need. Although these are difficult times, please know we are doing whatever we can to make things a bit easier for all of you. Michael Garlin

RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS In February, I was privileged to lead 35 members of our congregation on a Civil Rights Journey that started in Atlanta and ended in Birmingham, Alabama. In Birmingham, one of the highlights was a meeting with Bishop Calvin Wallace Woods who has been a leader of the Civil Rights movement since the 1960s. What made Bishop Woods such an inspiring speaker was his demonstration of the roles music and faith play in his pursuit of justice for his community. He taught us several of the songs that helped strengthen the brave men, women, and children who marched for the right to be treated as human beings, not least of which was the ability to exercise the right to vote. One of the songs he taught us still resonates with me, particularly as we approach the Pesach season. “Up above my head, I see freedom in the air. There must be a G-d somewhere.” It is a relatively simple line, but its meaning is profound. To the singer, freedom is not simply a concept, it is real and quantifiable, just out of reach. The fact that people can desire freedom, and fight to attain it, is evidence of G-d’s existence. G-d wants us to be free, but freedom requires effort and struggle both to attain, and to maintain. As part of the Passover Seder, we are instructed to behave as though we, ourselves actually went forth from Egypt. We are supposed to make the experience of the Exodus as real as possible. We reenact the Exodus not only so that our gratitude is more authentic, but also so that we feel empathy for those who are still struggling for freedom that is out of reach. The Civil Rights Journey reminds us that we don’t have to look very far to see that even within our own communities, there are people who have to fight for freedoms we take for granted. The Civil Rights battles of the 1950s and 1960s are still being fought. Around our Seder tables, we will praise G-d for bringing about our redemption from Egypt. We will sing Dayeinu, it would have been enough, because we would have been satisfied with any one of G-d’s kindnesses. However, I ask you, should we wait to say Dayeinu until all of our neighbors have the same freedoms we do? Up above my head, I see freedom in the air. There must be a G-d somewhere. May our efforts to bring freedom to our neighbors bring G-d closer to us all. Chag Kasher v’Sameach! Rabbi Warner Ferratier

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Tanya Solomon

Shalom! This month’s article is a little different from the usual, but I hope you will enjoy it, and allow me to share something I find inspiring. What inspires you? I would like to learn about your inspirations - please email me at President@BethShalomNB.org.

My husband Dave and I were lucky enough to head to the Hawaiian Islands recently, my first and hopefully not last visit there. We spent a lovely two days on the beach in Honolulu. We did not surf, even with the trade winds blowing, there were no waves to be had. The bulk of the trip was on the Big Island, which is well known for coffee, fresh fruit, beautiful bays with coral reefs, black sand beaches, green sand beaches, lava flows, and of course, its many volcanos. Driving around the island gave us a way to see eleven of the world’s thirteen climate zones - different animals, plants, and weather in each zone. It’s a good thing I packed so many different layers, I needed all of them at some point on that day. In between kayaking, visiting petroglyph sites, finding hidden beaches, and hiking through Volcano National Park, we did manage to find a little time to relax. Spending so much time outside brought me back to my summer camp days. Not because I went to camp in Hawaii (although some may argue that northern Wisconsin is a paradise), but because the place I learned to love Shabbat was at camp. As a child, I liked Shabbat at home. I knew that the entire family would say Kiddush and get blessed, eat dinner together, read the BIrkat Ha-Mazon, usually fighting over who could be the leader, and then head off to synagogue. Although we went as a family, and I liked almost anything the five of us did together, I will admit that my head was not always in the prayers every Friday night. Camp changed that - sitting next to the lake, outside, in the quiet just as the sun set, after spending the afternoon preparing. I always felt like there were no barriers between God and me, that I had a connection with God that stemmed from being surrounded by nature. The highlight of our trip was a visit to the peak of Mauna Loa at sunset. We drove from sea level to the visitor’s center at 9000 feet. After an hour or so to acclimate to the altitude, we switched to a special fourwheel drive vehicle to get up to the top. At 13,000 feet, we were above the clouds, could see miles to other islands, and I had a moment as the sun set where I once again felt that intense connection to God. I said a prayer at that moment. Once it was dark, we went down the mountain to about 11,000 feet and spent time star gazing. Using a telescope, I saw stars, planets, and galaxies I’ve only seen in pictures, and with the naked eye I saw so many constellations I was almost dizzy. I was reminded of a line from the Babylonian Talmud, “The Rabbis taught: He who sees the sun starting on its new cycle, the moon in its power, the planets in their orbits. And the signs of the Zodiac in their orderly progress should say, `Blessed be God who wrought the work of creation.” Tanya

YOUTH/YOUNG FAMILY PROGRAMMING Eric Golberg

March closes out another fantastic month in the books! In February, I had the opportunity to travel with Israel Now (formerly Ta’am Yisrael) and over 160 8th graders, including Beth Shalom members, from across the Chicagoland area to Israel. During the trip, I couldn’t help but think about how refreshing it was to experience Israel through the eyes of people who had never been there before. Not only was the trip incredibly fun, but watching the teens ask thoughtful questions and take an interest in the information that was presented to them was amazing.

With April finally here, it sadly means that our school year is winding down. With that in mind, it will soon be time for our USY chapter to elect our future leaders. USY Executive Board is a great opportunity for our high school students to get the opportunity to learn how to be a leader, make an impact in how CBS USY grows, and take on more responsibility with the chapter. Election packets will be released on Monday, April, 6th and elections will be on Thursday, May 7th. Following elections, CBS USY will be holding our end of the year Culminating Dinner on Thursday, May 14th. Registration will be coming out at the end of the month, so be sure to reserve your spot as we look back at the fantastic year CBS Youth has had.

CBS USY is excited to announce that we have taken the Gloss Youth Lounge ONLINE! Please check out the Youth Page on the CBS website to see what we are doing during this challenging time of social distancing: https://www.bethshalomnb.org/connect/youth/. I hope everyone has a Happy Pesach! As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have. Eric

Purim Carnival The Purim Carnival, on Sunday, March 8th, was very well attended. A huge thank you again to CBS School Board Members, teachers, madrichim, parent volunteers and of course our CBS maintenance staff! We would also like to thank Men’s Club for serving the food!

Siddur Ceremony Friday, March 6th was a special Shabbat for our third grade class. In honor of their formal beginning of Hebrew and Prayer education, the students led the Friday evening service. The evening began with a beautiful Shabbat dinner with a menu created by the students. During the service, our third grade led the Barchu and the Shema. They were presented with certificates and their own, personal copies of Siddur Sim Shalom. After Rabbi Ferratier blessed the students under a tallit, he spoke to them about his hope that they would use their siddurs often and with kavannah (intention). To commemorate the evening, the students created their own prayers which were displayed in the foyer and on the tables. Plan Ahead and Save Money! Religious School Registration for the upcoming school year begins this month. Look for emails and flyers with specifics on fees. Registration is on the CBS website. MEN’S CLUB Steven Elisco

MEN’S CLUB ANNOUNCES ITS KAVOD AWARD RECIPIENT It is a great privilege to be able to announce this year’s Kavod Award Recipient. Candidates for this award must perform at high levels of activity in synagogue and community life. They should be involved in the Synagogue and the Men’s Club by supporting the functions and serving on the committees of both. This year, the Kavod Award Committee has chosen to bestow the 2020 Kavod Award upon Raymond Rokni.

Ray has had a major presence in synagogue life at Congregation Beth Shalom for more than 20 years. In the Men’s Club he was the Social Programs Vice President from 2007-2009 and Financial Secretary from 2009-2010. Then when his Men’s Club needed him the most, he stood up with Larry Grossman, our 2013 Kavod Award Recipient, to establish the first ever Co-Presidency to fill the vacant 2013-2015 presidential term.

Ray has also served as the Synagogue Vice President of Programing from 20152017 and is currently serving as the 2019-2020 Vice President of Fundraising. When not occupying an officer position on either the Men’s Club or Synagogue’s Executive Committees, he has served on both the Men’s Club and Synagogue Boards. In 2007, Ray was honored as the Beth Shalom Men’s Club FJMC Midwest Region Man of the Year. Ray received this award due to his outstanding leadership in Men’s Club, including supporting Men’s Club functions and significant committee involvement.

L 'Shalom Steven A few important reminders: 

We ask that you sign in to your MyCBS account (ShulCloud) and make sure that your contact information is up to date including your cell phone number and email. If we need to communicate with you, we need to be sure we have your correct contact information.

BIMA FLOWER FUND

Many thanks to all who sent cards and donations in honor of our 60th Wedding Anniversary. Bill & Roz Harris CBS Yahrzeit Notifications and Name Reading To help honor the memory of your loved ones, you will receive Yahrzeit notifications via email during the month prior to the remembrance date. Your loved one’s name will be read at evening services the day before in addition to morning and evening services on the day of the Yahrzeit. It is appropriate to light a Yahrzeit candle the evening before the remembrance date. In addition, Yahrzeits for the upcoming week will be printed in the Shabbat brochure. We no longer read all of the names for the week’s Yahrzeits during Shabbat services and have not done so for over three years. If you do not receive your notification or prefer paper mail, please contact Eli Castellano at ecastellano@bethshalomnb.org or 847-498-4100 x.29. The Legacy Society at Congregation Beth Shalom The purpose of the Legacy Society is to provide long term financial assistance to CBS and its members. With a successful program, we will help ensure that Congregation Beth Shalom will be here for generations to come. Think of it like L’dor V’dor, handing over the synagogue from generation to generation. We want to be here for the Jewish Community of Northbrook, not just today but for tomorrow and for it to be a second home for generations to come. Please consider making a future gift to CBS by using one of the many different methods to leave your legacy to us. These can be simple to do and will leave a lasting legacy. Some easy ways of joining The Legacy Society: · Writing CBS into your will or estate plan · Changing an IRA beneficiary to CBS · Use a donor advised fund · Make CBS your life insurance beneficiary · Other personalized ways of leaving your legacy If you wish to make a legacy gift or have any questions, please contact Michael Garlin at 847-498-4100 ext. 21 or Glen Roter, our Legacy Chair, at legacy@bethshalomnb.org. 22

April Social Action 4/14 -Feed the homeless at PADS by providing a portion of the meal. Contact me for more info. 4/26 – Spring Blood Drive – see flyer on page 18. Contact Steven Elisco for more info MensClubPresident@BethShalomNB.org. The Social Action Committee assisted our Religious School students with Social Action Projects in January, February and March. The students learned about Beth Shalom’s involvement with The ARK and Northfield Township Food Pantry, sorted food and made soup for PADS, a homeless shelter in Buffalo Grove. They also talked with a parent whose child has been a patient at Lurie Children’s Hospital and made blankets and get well cards for patients. They met with a director of Hunger Free Northbrook and learned about helping other students who are food insecure. In March, the students talked with a congregant about volunteering at an animal shelter and in April they will learn about Honor Flight Chicago. If you are or know a Veteran who would be able to talk with our students, we’d love to hear from you! We will be providing food bags for students in Northbrook Schools who are food insecure through May and resume in September. Contact me if you would like to help by purchasing food bags.
