RABBI AVERBACH’S REVELATIONS My least favorite part of the seder is the Four Sons/Children. I try to skip this part every year, but I am overruled by those who want to discuss them again. One of my issues is that I want to bring in new readings, new perspectives, but I feel obligated to still finish on time. That means we have to find some of the chaff and separate it out so that the brisket doesn’t get cold. The Four Children falls into that category (as does the Frog Song, but I lose on that one as well). Another reason is that I dislike the idea of labeling people. I don’t want others to label me, and I feel we limit the potentiality of others once we slap on a broad statement about who they are based on one question they ask. It does not help that three of the four iconic children get negative labels (wicked, simple, not understanding enough to even formulate a question). Only one (the wise child) is seen positively. I like that we are pushing education and inquisitiveness, but I feel the tension build in the room as siblings look for each other across the maze of tables, pointing to each other at the designation they believe the other deserves, either feeling confident or dejected if they are not themselves embodying the sole positive trait. And perhaps, if I am not the wise child in my family, or the wise one at this seder, then I am not worthy of my religion. If everyone points to me as the wicked or simple child, I might as well not be here... ...and maybe I just carry around too much childhood baggage? What is unique about Pesach is that we spend so much time preparing. No other holiday gets this level of attention. I know that some of you have already done your shopping, and others have already finished cooking by this point, weeks ahead of time. Beyond that, we clean, we scour, we wash and buff and polish and scrub. We make sure that our table looks different and our food tastes different. But do we make sure that we are different? Do we take the time and energy to prepare ourselves for these moments? More than Yom Kippur, which has us standing in shul most of the day, Pesach leaves us hanging in the balance. We hold two opposing truths at once: we are enslaved; we are free. Which way are we heading on that journey? Who are we bringing along with us? Do we feel the weight of this moment? Beyond the branding of being the wise or wicked child, we must confront our own multiplicity. We are each a combination of the four children, as is everyone else. No one should be seen as merely one. This is one of the slaveries to which we are shackled, yearning to break free. Only by freeing others – of labels, of baggage, of loneliness – will they be seen. And then you will be found. Rabbi Averbach

FROM THE CONGREGATION PRESIDENT Debbie Solomon

My joining the Board of Trustees occurred after serving on the Keruv committee about 14 years ago. One of my earliest and most memorable Board experiences was having someone reference my father in a meeting citing his “dancing bear” philosophy. The “dancing bear” was that enticement to come to an event at the synagogue. For instance, having a Shabbat dinner before services usually increases attendance at services. It made me realize just a smidgen of the work that my parents had done before me, and I began reflecting on what I like to do that appeals to people.

My favorite “dancing bear” is not my own idea, but one that has been passed down for years and that is the joy of my Saturday morning. I get to hand out candy on the Bimah. As simple as it is, we all see them come running in and onto the Bimah for Adon Olam, and they are always a welcome sight. They are all my new buddies and I will miss my morning hugs and greetings from them when my service on the Bimah is completed at the end of June. Whether it’s the Bar/Bat Mitzvah child’s cousins or siblings, Rabbi Averbach’s kids, Hannah Melman, Mira Schrank, or the Laven boys, just to name a few. I love their draw to the Bimah for this ritual. Many then also participate in Kiddush and handwashing prior to the Hamotzi. The challah is torn in pieces and enjoyed by all. But truly, it begins with the candy as the enticement, the “dancing bear,” but it’s truly about the Judaism. We pray, we celebrate, and then we break bread together. Now it’s off to the kids table at the Kiddush! Come and join me with your little ones on the Bimah. It’s a place of warmth, welcoming, sweets, and love.

Congregation Beth Shalom’s BOOK CHATS Presents Memento Park by Mark Sarvas Tuesday, April 9, 2019 (rescheduled from February 6) 7:30 p.m. Congregation Beth Shalom 3433 Walters Avenue - Northbrook Memento Park begins with an unexpected call to Matt Santos, a middle-aged, moderately successful actor, who learns that a multi-million dollar painting, “Budapest Street Scene” by Hungarian artist, Ervin Kalman, may have been looted from his family during WWII. To recover it he must repair his relationship with his father, unearth his family history and restore his connection to Judaism. Memento Park is about the Hungarian Jewish experience, and is common to any immigrant family where history is the thing everyone is trying to forget but lives on in the present. Come join us and bring a friend to chat about the 2018 One Book/One Community selection, Memento Park. Contact Linda Gold at lindangold@comcast.net or call 847/509-1978 to reserve your seats.

Q&A WITH CBS STAFF Q&A WITH BETH SHALOM STAFF MEMBER CANTOR RAQUEL P. GERSHON, CBS RITUAL DIRECTOR Q: What year did you start working at CBS? A: I started in July, 2016 as the Ritual Director. Q: What do you like most about working at CBS? A: I like the many wonderful people I’ve met here, but I especially love my B’nai Mitzvah students and enjoy guiding them and their families through the B’nai Mitzvah process. Another highlight has been participating in Healing services, Spirit of Shabbat services, and revamping Junior Congregation. Q: What’s one thing that you want people to know about you? A: Two things – a) I am happy to accept Shabbat dinner invitations and b) I’ve lived in 10 different cities and 3 different countries. Don’t ask me where “home” is! Q: What’s your favorite memory/moment from working at CBS? A: I really enjoy singing with Cantor Stoehr for ShabbaTONE services. A huge highlight was performing my original song at the Helene Hoffman Memorial Concert last year at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. Q: What would you do if you won the lottery? A: LOL! If I won the lottery I would travel, visiting family and friends all across the globe. I’d record all of my unrecorded songs (and write more) and I’d buy a bungalow on the beach in Netanya, where I could sit and play my guitar and watch the sunset over the Mediterranean every day. Q: Where is your favorite vacation destination? A: Israel, Barcelona or anywhere warm! Q: What is your favorite Jewish holiday and why? A: My favorite Jewish holiday is Pesach, because it’s the only one I spend with family and because I love the food! Also, my family has the best Seders – they go until midnight or 1:00 am and we sing 90% of it. Q: What is the best part of your job? A: Watching my students (kids AND adults) read Torah for the first time successfully. I kvell like a proud parent! Q: What is your favorite childhood memory? A: Singing in multi-part harmony with my dad and siblings on long road trips across the USA. We still sing a lot when we are all together, which is not often enough. Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be? A: Healing the sick!

Siddur Ceremony Friday, March 8th was a special Shabbat for our 3rd Grade class. In honor of their formal beginning of Hebrew and Prayer education, the students led Friday night services. The evening began with a beautiful Shabbat dinner with a menu created by the students. During the service, our 3rd Grade led the Barchu and the Shema. They were presented with certificates and their own, personal copies of Siddur Sim Shalom. After Rabbi Averbach blessed the students under a Tallit, he spoke to them about his hope that they would use their siddurs often and with kavannah. To commemorate the evening, the students created their own prayers which were displayed in the foyer and on the tables.

KERUV Bob Spector

Shalom Chaverim,

What a wonderful time of the year- spring has finally arrived and Passover is just around the corner. Passover is a holiday that so poignantly reminds us of how our faith in God and ourselves can overcome attempts at the oppression and destruction of our people. Unfortunately, we cannot nor should we take our religious freedom for granted. My daughters, Rachel and Rebecca, are reminded of this on their college campus every Fall (they both attend Ohio State University). The BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment, Sanction of Israel) has been a presence on many college campuses such as OSU for several years. Rachel called me last Fall because for the fourth consecutive year (it was defeated the three previous years) the BDS organization at OSU once again was trying to pass an anti-Israel resolution within the student community. Her frustration was that they wouldn’t stop and feared that if they hammered away enough the student community would support a resolution that based on the rhetoric was not only anti-Israel but also anti-Semitic. The nuance of the fine line between politics and racism is for another discussion. She and Rebecca were worried because they love OSU but how could they feel good about being part of a community that would support hate and judgment because of their religious and cultural beliefs? Are they not entitled to be part of a community that will accept them for who they are and what they believe? The good news is that the student government resoundingly defeated the BDS resolution (85% no 15% yes) and therefore the resolution was not brought before the entire student community for a vote. They both felt affirmed and supported by their student government, but this harsh reminder that there are those who hate because of what they believe and not who they are as individuals has influenced their evolving view of the world outside of their insular life experience they grew up with in Glenview. While their college experience is quite poignant (on many levels), one may ask what does this story have to do with Keruv and our interfaith marriage initiative? It does because we tend to judge ourselves and our own more critically than we do outsiders. We expect more of ourselves as a Jewish community which in and of itself can be a good thing. However, on issues that can challenge the fabric of our beliefs such as interfaith marriage we have a history of rushing to judgment. It is especially critical in today’s political climate that we are as tolerant of ourselves as a community as we expect of others to be toward us and our fellow Jews. In my 25 years at Beth Shalom I have seen us grow and evolve into a much more accepting community toward those who have not traditionally been welcomed into a Conservative synagogue. Every year, thousands of Jews are making relationship decisions that potentially challenge the strength of our Jewish community. So why Keruv? If they cannot turn to their own for guidance, support, engagement and acceptance, then to whom can they turn? As always, I welcome your constructive comments and feedback. I can be reached at cbskeruv@gmail.com.
