Eastertide/Pentecost

The Newsletter ofThe Episcopal Cathedral of Saint John

A Word From Our Dean...

Our Worship Life Sundays Holy Eucharist 8:30 AM, Rite 1 10:30 AM, Rite 2 Church School Classes meet at 10:30 AM

Dear Cathedral Family,

This month the Fifty Days of Easter come to an end and we will celebrate another of the great feasts of the Church year, Pentecost. On Sunday, the 12th , we will mark the role of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives. The supreme gift of the Holy Spirit is love, that thing which defines the life of God and which is what molds together the Father and the Son. The gift of love which the Holy Spirit so freely and lavishly gives us is not just a nice theological idea, however. This gift must be learned and practiced. It needs to be shared and shown off as much as possible because it makes all the difference in life. Put another way, it is the great summons to become what we are meant to be, the loving family of God. Pentecost has several other aspects, one of which is that it symbolizes the dynamic power and attraction which the Church is meant to offer to the world. Pentecost, therefore, reminds us that we are to work all of the time to grow our parish and expand its horizons. We like to talk about church growth, but we either leave it to someone else, or we see it only as a goal when it is actually a by-product of living in the Spirit. As a priest friend wrote recently in his parish newsletter, “A growing parish is one which understands that its first priority is the faithful worship of God week in and week out, day in and day out. It understands that it is to be found faithful to God, above all else, and that it is He who will give the increase. It understands that God’s will is above all else, and that the Holy Spirit brings people to God, not stratagems. It is our job not to put up any road-blocks that keep people away, and to be welcoming.” Please bring your family and friends with you on Pentecost. It just make all the difference in their lives and yours!

With every good wish, and faithfully, Harry

From The Deacon’s Bench

Dear Friends in Christ, At the writing of this note, I am watching our president walk with survivors of the terrible devastation this week in Joplin, MO. It seems hard to believe that so much world-wide destruction could be happening, but in our age of instant coverage, we don’t miss anything anymore. In a way, this is a good thing. It helps us to know right away when people are suffering and rise, as we are able to offer our help in the situation. Even though it is far away, many people have reached out and aided those in need, and we can all thank God for these Good Samaritans. Whether we are helping out at the Meal Site, Food Pantry, Sunday morning coffee or aiding a person in our neighborhood or community, we remember that, as Jesus said, “When you do it for these, least of my brethren, you do it for me.” Jesus calls us all to serve, as we are able. If we are needed and can go far away to help, we should. If not, we can find many places here at home that need our assistance. Helping others in need is at the true center of who we are as a people of faith. Let us continue to listen for that small, soft voice and be ready to give all that we can for our global family. Your sister in Christ, Deacon Barbara

Prayer for the Calling of a Bishop for Rhode Island Gracious God who sets the seas in their bounds and gives life to all your creatures, who continually renews the face of the earth and is faithful to your covenant from generation to generation: Lift up and guide the people of the Diocese of Rhode Island as we seek the next bishop to lead us; renew our strength in the baptismal ministries to which you call us; watch over and inspire the work of the committees entrusted with this task; and, by the power of your Spirit, draw your people always toward the vision of your holy reign; we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen. ***Be sure to read the article on page 5, to see the current news in the Search Process.*** 2

A Memorial Service for Josephine Krauss So many of you have asked about when there would be a service for my mother who died on 17 February whilst I was in hospital. On Saturday, the 4th of June at 11 o’clock, we will have a simple service of The Order for the Burial of the Dead with hymns as Mother requested. There will be a collation afterwards in Synod Hall. Later in the month I will go to Philadelphia to inter her remains with those of my father. Again, I am indebted to so many of you who have sent me messages of condolence and your prayers. Mother had a remarkable rich and full life (especially at 99) for which she was grateful. In addition, I know that she was ready for the next part of life in the Church Expectant! The Dean

“Precious in the sight of The Lord is the death of His saints.”

-Thoughts from the Senior WardenI’ve made a decision in the last few days – I plan to do the very best I can to never complain about the weather again. This “Spring”, which never seemed to materialize, was so full of rain, chilly days, and endless gloomy skies that many of us felt it was a good enough reason to grouse a bit and feel sorry for ourselves. I, for one, feel completely chagrined about my own participation in that after hearing reports and seeing the films of what truly bad weather really means. The devastation from the flooding Mississippi and the raging tornadoes is a sight that’s difficult to absorb. I grew up in ‘tornado country’ and learned a healthy respect for them, but I don’t recall ever hearing anything even remotely similar to these recent catastrophes. I know that you join me in keeping all those affected in your prayers. It would seem that what we thought was our less than stellar Spring was actually a great blessing in disguise. God’s Peace To All Leah

A Big “Thank You!” from Don’s Darlings Bernice Belt thanks all of you that sponsored her for the Parkinson Unity walk in April. Over 2000 people took part - an amazing sight! The day was cold (we wore our gloves and hats!) but it was still fun. "Don's Darlings" raised nearly $4000 for Parkinson's Disease research. Thank you again for your help! Bernice

With an extraordinarily broad vocal range and natural fluency in a wide range of musical styles, Terry Barber is a performer in a class by himself. He’s been featured on some of the world’s most storied stages and has worked with many of the music industry’s most prestigious songwriters, composers and producers. Whether performing opera, jazz or popular favorites, he breathes new life into everything he sings and crafts what the Los Angeles Times calls “performances of great vitality and verve.” As a member of the multiple Grammy-winning ensemble Chanticleer, Terry was called “...the jewel in Chanticleer’s crown...” With them, he worked his way through the repertoire, performing opera, classical, gospel, jazz and folk music in a dozen languages at over a hundred concerts around the globe. In 2002, Terry joined the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for their staging of “Sly,” starring Placido Domingo. He made his New York City Opera debut in 2001 in “Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria” and covered Daniel Taylor in the NYC Opera’s production of Handel’s “Rinaldo” starring David Daniels. In summer of 2002 he performed at the International Spoleto Festival both the Spirit and the Witch in Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas.” Terry made his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2004 singing the role of Orlovsky in “Die Fledermaus” with the National Chorale under Martin Josman. That year he was also featured with the Portland Baroque Orchestra in Handel’s “Messiah” under the direction of Nicholas Kramer and with the New Trinity Baroque Orchestra of Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” (with Evellyn Tubb) which prompted the Atlanta Journal Constitution to rave that “...his grasp of the texts and elegant phrasing made for charismatic singing.” His ongoing projects include recordings with longtime collaborator and clarinetist, Lone Madsen with whom he has performed for music industry executives at the studio of Bryan Adams in London and Prince Alexander 4

Other lay members of the Transition Committee are Linda Mendonca, Emmanuel, Cumberland; Bill Plumb, Trinity, Cranston; and Grace Swinski, St. Paul’s, Pawtucket. The Standing Committee and Diocesan Council, the groups responsible for overseeing the transition process, will commission the committees at the retreat. The committees then will begin their work with the help of a consultant, Judy Stark. Judy has consulted in three other bishop search processes and co-chaired the Bishop Coadjutor Search Committee for the Diocese of Southwest Florida. She has served three terms on the Diocesan Council and has been elected as a deputy to the 2012 General Convention. Additionally, the Rev. Mary Johnstone and Julia Slayton, Executive Director of Bethany House of Prayer, located in Arlington, Mass, will serve as a chaplain team to help guide the committees through the search, election, and consecration process.

Pentecost Sunday is also Youth Sunday! Mark your calendars now so that you and your family will attend the festivities on Sunday, June 12, as we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. We will also be saying a great big “Thank You!” to the children of the Church School of The cathedral of Saint John, as they finish up the year and begin their summer. Our church school has continued to be very involved in supporting our friends in our companion diocese of Ezo, in the Sudan. They have raised money to purchase more goats this year, by having a Read-A-Thon once again in Lent. They were able to purchase 4 more goats for the farm. Well done! In addition, with the help of Jimps Jean-Louis and some wonderful parents and of course with the ever present and most wonderful director of the Church School, Santana Sluss, the children were treated to an activity day on Sunday, May 22, complete with face painting, Yogi Bear and board games, as well as some really good pizza!

We look forward to seeing you all again in the Fall, and have a really great summer! And thank you, Santana for all your wonderful efforts!
