Season of Epiphany

The Newsletter ofThe Episcopal Cathedral of Saint John

A Word From Our Dean...

Our Worship Life Sundays Holy Eucharist 8:30 AM, Rite 1 10:30 AM, Rite 2 Church School Classes meet at 10:30 AM Wednesday 12:10 PM, Holy Eucharist

Dear Cathedral Family, It’s been several years since we’ve had such a long Epiphanytide. Usually we only have enough time to try to digest the story of the wise men and then to remind ourselves that the Christ-child has come into the world for all women and men, all girls and boys. But this round we should call to mind other themes of the season. Christ as the light of the world is one such. But the light doesn’t just stay with Christ. It is passed on to you and me so that we may pass it on to others. That we are meant to live under the blessings of God which Jesus outlined in the Sermon on the Mount through the Beatitudes is another Epiphany opportunity. Are we really interested in being humble, meek, peace-makers and right with God? Lastly are we ready to share the freedom we receive from Christ with all of our fellow humans? Each one of us needs grab hold of these opportunities for new life. One of the highlights of this month will be our annual observation of Black History Month. We will be offering many and fascinating resources from within the parish family and from the larger community. I hope all of us will join in the activities which are noted elsewhere in this issue of The Record and likewise will invite your friends and neighbors to do so. May I share a personal note? On the 17th of this month I will be having a prostate operation. My doctor tells me that I will be out of action for a while and not to be returning to duty until I’m feeling fully recuperated. On Sundays our dear friend, Bishop Joslin, will be in charge of our worship, and during the week Fr. Larry Bradner, who is familiar to all of us too, will be with us. Of course, Deacon Barbara, for whose presence we are blessed, will provide continuity and her usual conscientious, devoted help. And I expect to back with you by the middle of Lent. Enjoy the rest of Epiphany. With every good wish and faithfully,

Harry Krauss

From The Deacon’s Bench

Dear Friends in Christ, February is Black History Month. If we take the time to think about it, most of us, at least in my age range, can remember what it was like in this country before the Civil Rights movement. I was living in Florida as a young person, which wasn’t exactly “the deep south,” but I remember “Whites Only” fountains and entrances to establishments. Hard as it is to think about, it wasn’t all that long ago, when our country had a huge “color divide.” Though I was only very young, I remember Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I have a Dream” speech like it was yesterday. It has inspired me many, many times in my work and in my life. I think Dr. King would be happy to know that people remember the passion he had for the rights of each individual as equally “a child of God,” and a citizen of this country. Today, we are still plagued by our all-too-human response to reject anyone or anything that isn’t what we are. We avoid taking responsibility for the shortcomings of our churches, cities, towns, states and even our country, when it comes to standing up for the disenfranchised. No matter what we are looking at, whether it be issues of race, citizenship or sex; whether it be our church, our country or even our own thoughts, we are responsible for what happens to each other. We are, after all is said and done, truly our brother’s keeper. We stand together or we fall apart. Our country, and our church has a full and rich heritage of multiculturalism. We have great opportunities to learn about each other and to learn from each other. If we don’t take advantage of this great opportunity and learn to grow in fellowship and love, then shame on us for passing on a wonderful chance to learn and grow. This month, there will be several programs that the Diversity Committee has arranged for us to share in, to grow and stretch a little bit; to stand up and be counted. Please don’t miss these opportunities, and then, once we have applies them to Black History Month, let us take them and apply them to the many other issues of disenfranchisement in our lives. Whoever we are, we are part of the bigger picture here at The Cathedral of Saint John. We owe our allegiance to God and to one another, across all lines of race, sex, culture, birthplace or ideology. Your sister in Christ, Deacon Barbara “….And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day, when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty, we are free at last!” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Rt. Rev. Edward W. Neufville, II Rt. Rev. Edward W. Neufville, II, B.A, M.TH., D.D., 11th Diocesan Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Liberia, 2nd Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Liberia, and Former Dean of the Anglican Province of West Africa. The families of the Rt. Rev. Edward W. Neufville, II, announce the peaceful home-going of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend, and Bishop. This sad event occurred on Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. On May 6, 1984, Bishop Neufville was consecrated Suffragan Bishop at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Monrovia, Liberia. On January 6, 1996, he was enthroned as Diocesan Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Liberia. He served in this capacity until his retirement on December 16, 2007. Bishop Edward W. Neufville, II, is survived by his wife of 42 years, Louise Morais Neufville, his children, several foster children, five grandchildren, seven siblings, several nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives.

Junior Warden’s Report: January, 2011 Editor’s note: With this report, we say a sincere “Thank You!” to Andy Costa, who has finished his tenure as Junior Warden. Best wishes to you, Andy, and a huge note of thanks from all of us! The CATHEDRAL of SAINT JOHN Providence, RI Junior Warden’s Report – January 2011 Blessings all! New water heater for the kitchen “Warewasher” is installed and working well. Winston had an electrician replace a corroded electrical box. I replaced another broken pane of glass on the Church St. side entrance. Energy Efficiency is scheduled to replace the circulator for the Church School zone of the heating system they expect cost to be less than $500.00. They had replaced the circulator with one that had a smaller motor but it was not able to run the pump consistently. Winston has gotten prices for an automatic door closer to be installed (~$450.00) on the front entry door in hopes that we can keep it closed to save on heat. I’m trying to find time to cover the broken windows in the tower, but have not been able to get to it yet. Additionally, Winston replaced the ballast that burned out in the fluorescent light fixture above the Ladies’ room sink. An issue that has been coming up is setting of the Alarms at night. Several times lately I have been called by Sonitrol and alerted that folks are leaving without arming the system. Please be certain to set the alarm when you leave for safe keeping of our building and valuables. Regards, Andy 3

-Thoughts from the Senior WardenThoughts From the Senior Warden – As I sit here watching another soft beautiful snowfall on this 24 degree day, I’m thinking how very blessed I am. I’m at home, spaghetti sauce is simmering, and if I start to feel chilly I can go turn up the thermostat. Home - food – warmth: these things are so basic and yet so many people today have lost much or all of their access to them. For many, a day like this is not to be enjoyed – only dreaded. We must be increasingly mindful of all the people who need our help and do whatever we possibly can. Our Cathedral food pantry continues to serve many each week and funds go out faster than they come in. The pantry is officially open for one hour on Saturday morning, but people often come to the office during the week as well. Please remember the need with donations of cash or goods. God’s Peace To All Leah

Pictures from the Goat Farm in Ezo, Sudan Each Christmas, the Chapter makes a donation to purchase goats as a gift to the children of The Cathedral of Saint John. These goats are for the new goat farm in Ezo, Sudan, our companion Diocese in Africa. What we have learned is that the donations that we have made over the past two years have purchased 4 goats for the farm. Here are some pictures sent to us: Top left: Bishop John Zawo at the goat farm fence with one of his priests; Top Right.: New goats arrive; Bottom left: goats in yard; Bottom right: The goat fence from outside.
