To help with this process, the Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Association (NSHBA) hosts a Parade of New Homes

that highlights some of the best in new home construction in the province. In its 28th year, the NSHBA aims to provide homeowners and future homeowners with a greater understanding of options and trends that are available for their new home – everything from energy efficiency, to best use of space; from new design features to aging in place features, just to name a few. “The Parade of New Homes is all about possibilities,” says Sherry Donovan, NSHBA chief executive officer. “It makes a difference when you can see and feel for yourself what the latest trends are in new construction and helps to make the decision-making process a little easier when you are considering a new home.” Donovan adds that although online research is a great option, when it comes to seeing the styles of various builders, new ideas and thinking about things you may not have considered, there is nothing that compares to actually visiting the entries in the Parade of New Homes each year. New Home Energy-Efficiency Newly improved EnerGuide label sticks in Nova Scotia. W

e’re living in an information era. When you’re buying or building a home, one piece of information you look for is a home’s EnerGuide rating. For almost 20 years, this rating system and the EnerGuide label has been an important resource for homeowners. It’s now taking on a whole new look, and Nova Scotia is one of the first provinces to move to the enhanced system. Natural Resources Canada is updating the EnerGuide rating system and the label to keep up with industry advancements. They say the improved system now demonstrates the energy performance of a home, rather than just its efficiency. The new label allows you to spot the biggest energy users in your home. It also gives you a consumption based rating measured in gigajoules per year (GJ/year). This reads similar to other consumption ratings that you’re already familiar with – like kilowatt hours per year for home appliances, miles per gallon for vehicles, or calories per serving for food. For example, one gigajoule is the equivalent of washing over 100 loads of laundry, or watching all 1,230 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) season. The average Canadian household uses 100 gigajoules of energy per year. The biggest improvement is that the rating scale is now more intuitive. You’ll understand how your home’s rating is produced, based on the actual math – the lower the number, the better the home’s energy performance.

The original EnerGuide labels are still valid. Homes with old labels are not able to convert over to the new gigajoules per year rating since the updated version includes types of energy uses and some new calculations that were not previously included. Customers accessing some of Efficiency Nova Scotia’s programs and services are starting to receive the newly-improved rating system. For example, homes that sign up for a $99 home energy assessment receive a new EnerGuide label and information. Homes that are electrically heated, may still qualify for additional rebates and incentives. For those building a new home, you can pursue ENERGY STAR or R2000 certification, or have your home rated using the EnerGuide rating system and you may qualify for as much as $2,000 in rebates.
