The American oystercatcher is aptly named due to its nearly exclusive diet of shellfish found along shorelines, such as Georgia's coast. It is also known as the American pied oystercatcher or PiruPiru This bird is very distinguishable due to its bright red-orange bill and reddishrimmed yellow eyes. Oystercatchers are particular about their nests and will choose five or more areas to scrape out and line with pebbles or shells before choosing one of them to lay just a few speckled, tan eggs within between April and July. This bird species was hunted to near extinction in the 19th century for eggs and plumage, however they have recovered significantly due to the passage of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in 1918 and currently exist in stable numbers. The oystercatcher is a great bird to seek for spotting when visiting our coast, whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or a nature novice
June is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and according to Mayo clinic, getting a 30 to 60-minute workout in several times a week is a great way to aid in preventing Alzheimer's.
We still need our community’s support for this event; if you would like to donate to the fireworks, be a sponsor, or volunteer for setup/cleanup please visit our website McIntoshChamber.com for more information or call us at 912-437-6684.
