president's letter

Fall is my favorite time of year for many reasons. The weather turns cooler, football season begins, school is back in session, and it is a great time for outdoor activities. There is no better place to enjoy those activities than Dallas Athletic Club. The golf course is still green from summer, tennis play is nice to enjoy on a cool and crisp fall day, and we all get to sit outside and enjoy great food and beverages. We also have a lot of fun activities planned for families. Be sure to head out and enjoy your Club, and do not forget to thank the staff for their hard work.

As we move forward into fall, our Gold Course renovation continues to make progress. If you have not gone to look at the changes being made, I would highly recommend that you drive around. As I viewed the progress, I was excited about the changes coming, thankful for the work being put into this project by so many, and grateful that we have a championship golf course to play as the Gold Course is being renovated. Since we are down to one course to play for the rest of this year, let us be mindful of our staff, the rules, and each

other. Please keep in mind that when other clubs go through a golf course closure, they have nowhere to play as they continue to pay dues. We are blessed to have the Blue Course during this time!

When discussing membership, it sounds like a broken record. Our waitlist continues to grow and is very robust as more folks want to be a part of our great Club. Cari has her hands full daily with tours and phone calls of constant inquiries from many interested families. Once again, this is unprecedented territory for DAC.

Our reputation as a premier club is evident by the people that want to be a part of what we are blessed to experience. Please remember to be patient and understanding as we undergo a substantial change to our Club with the golf course renovation. Before you know it, we will have a new Gold Course to play which will only enhance our experience as members and increase the desire of others to become a member of DAC. Take care and see you at the Club!

golf Greens Talk

Fall is an exceptionally busy time for our maintenance operations. This is especially true this year as we work to finish the ongoing Gold Course Project. By mid-September, the majority of the heavy construction on the Gold Course will be completed, and our primary focus will be to get all of the new grass established before winter. This includes planting bermudagrass sod for tees, fairways, roughs, and seeding bentgrass on greens. For bermudagrass – the hotter the better when it comes to fall temperatures. For bentgrass greens it is not quite as simple. Early fall is often considered an ideal time to plant as warm or even hot temperatures are great for promoting rapid seed germination. However, more mild temperatures (60 to 75 degrees) are necessary for root growth and establishment. We are currently planning to seed in early September. The newly seeded greens will then need a minimum of 12 weeks of good growing weather before winter arrives in order to be able to tolerate traffic from golfers. Whether or not Mother Nature will choose to cooperate this fall remains to be seen. However, our goal is to open the Gold Course to at least limited play by late 2023.

It has certainly been an exciting summer. Our crew has once again done an excellent job battling the heat and drought conditions

GOLF LESSON: easy tips for hitting solid irons

Hitting a solid iron is one of the best feelings in golf; the compression, the flight, the ball taking off at your target just feels amazing. So how in the world do we do that?

First, play the ball in line with the logo on your shirt on the left side of your chest. You can't hit down on the ball if the ball is too far forward, but it's even harder when the ball is back in your stance. I see a lot of people with the ball too far back because they think it will be easier to strike it solid. The fact is, when the ball is back you will fail to move to the lead leg in the downswing. This might be the most important move to striking the ball solid.

Gold Course Renovation Update

across the entire property. At the same time, they have been busier than ever working alongside Sanders Golf and Chet Williams to ensure the success of the Gold Course Project. We look forward to a break in the weather and showing off the Gold Course improvements soon. Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Secondly, stay in posture as you swing down and through. I see so many people "come out of the shot" or "standing up" through impact. Sometimes it's either to try to lift the ball or because it is more difficult to turn while staying in posture. A good thought is to feel like you're "on top of the ball" or "covering the ball" with your chest at impact; like your chest is looking at the ball. That'll help keep you down and into the shot.

The third piece is driving your right side through the ball. Use your shoulder, hip and knee to drive at the target. This allows you to accelerate into impact and to the finish. Speed also stabilizes the face and prevents you from trying to flip or scoop the ball off the ground. Good iron players really fire that right side, extending the right arm and pushing through with the body.

Do these three keys and you’ll be on your way to being a great ball striker! Have fun!

GOLF RULE: ball resting against a rake

Do you know what to do if you find your ball resting against a rake anywhere on the course?

You are entitled to remove the rake, but if the ball moves in the process, do you play it from...

1. The place that it rolls to when you remove the rake?

2. Where it was lying originally before the rake was removed?

The answer is: 2. Where it was lying originally before the rake was removed.

If the ball moves when you remove the rake, you must replace it on its original spot.

Sometimes this is likely to be good news if the rake has prevented your ball rolling into the back edge of a bunker, and sometimes bad news if it leaves you sitting awkwardly on a slope. But you don't get a choice in the matter so you need to remember that sometimes it will play out to your advantage, and sometimes not!

Before removing the rake, it is wise to mark the position of the ball so you know where to replace it if it does move. You are not obligated to do this under the Rules, but it will usually make things simpler.

You must then attempt to replace the ball on the spot where it was lying against the rake.

The obvious next question is what to do if you can't get the ball to remain at rest in its original location - a likely outcome if you're on a slope and the ball moved when you removed the rake.

You need to know that you are not allowed to press it into the ground - even gently - as that would be a breach of the Rules. Instead, you should make two attempts to place it on the spot where it was, and if it still rolls away, then place it at the closest spot possible - not nearer the hole - where it will remain at rest.

What's in the bag?

Each newsletter we will be highlighting one of the Professional staffs' “What’s in the Bag.” This month we will be looking at Golf Professional, Tanner Hurley's bag. Tanner has been a TaylorMade staff member for four years and plays the Stealth 2 Driver and the P7MC & P7MB irons. Ask Tanner about any of your equipment questions and remember to always get fit for your gear at DAC.

In Tanner's bag you will find...

• Driver - TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus, 10.5 Degrees. Tour AD IZ-6 extra stiff shaft

• 3 Wood - TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus, 15 Degrees. Project X even flow 65 gram extra stiff shaft

• 3 Hybrid - TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus, 19.5 Degrees. Project X HZRDUS Smoke 90 gram extra stiff shaft

• 4-6 Irons - TaylorMade P-7MC, Dynamic Gold X100 shafts

• 7-Pw - TaylorMade P-7MB, Dynamic Gold X100 shafts

• Wedges - TaylorMade MG3 - 52,56,60

Degrees

• Putter - Scotty Cameron Studio Select Laguna 1.5

Happy Fall Y'all!

If the ball was originally in the general area of the course, this spot must also be in the general area. Similarly, if the original spot was in a bunker or penalty area, the nearest spot must also be in that same bunker or same penalty area respectively. The ball is then in play. Rule 14.2e is where you will find all the details.

I think it's safe to say everyone is ready for cooler temps! At the start of every season, golfers attempt to refresh their closets to keep looking sharp on the golf course. From golf shirts to shoes, men's, ladies, and youth, the DAC Pro Shop is your onestop shop when it comes to the latest trends to keep you looking your best on and off the course.

Fall not only means cooler weather and more golf, but it also means the holidays are just around the corner. Save the date for October 19! We will be having a Pre-Holiday/Fall Market Sip n' Shop from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This will be the perfect event to get a jump start on your holiday shopping or to refresh your wardrobe. We will have vendors for men and women, with items from shoes to accessories. Stop by the shop or email me with any questions, comments, or special orders.

DALLAS ATHLETIC CLUB | SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2023 | 7
Here, if the ball won't stay at rest when replaced twice, you must place it at the nearest point not nearer the hole.

Welcome to fall! The DAC Tennis Program is in full swing competing in TCD, USTA, Feeder and Metro leagues this fall. The Club has 35 teams for both men and women that will be competing this season. We are looking forward to having our members compete in the USTA tournament at the National level, and we are very excited for the Men’s and Women’s Club Championships scheduled for the first weekend of October.

One friendly reminder, lessons with pros can only be booked directly with a teaching professional. You can find contact information for all DAC Tennis Staff online. Don’t forget to check out our new junior development hours online and on the app.

Back to Fit Pressure Points

same as those used in acupuncture.

Summer is over and now it’s back to school, back to work and fewer vacations. This is typically the time of year we get back into more of a rhythm and routine. That’s the good news. The bad news is it takes a few workouts to get back in shape. Here are a few reminders to help you when you return to the gym.

• START SLOWLY – It’s been a while since you have worked out, so starting with an easier routine is a smart move.

• LISTEN TO YOUR BODY – If you're exceptionally sore or something hurts, back off a little. (Ice is a great recovery tool).

• GRAB A PARTNER – One of the easiest ways to get motivated again is with a workout partner.

• HAVE A PLAN - If you are struggling with knowing what to do or where to begin, your DAC Fitness Professionals can help.

For more information on developing a good plan of attack this fall, come see me in the Fitness Center or email me at fitness@dacstaff.org.

GOLF

One of the more common sayings by golfers is “I’m losing distance”. Over time, distance will be affected, but there are a few things we can do to minimize a loss in distance. Speed is a major factor in how far we hit the ball. Often speeding up the swing by trying to swing faster makes the problem worse. Research has proven that arm speed, and more importantly lead arm speed, directly correlates to swing speed. We are going to use a right-handed golfer in our examples.

We want to get our hands higher in our backswing to help generate more swing speed to hit the ball further. The simple thought of gravity

Pressure points, this is a term that many of us have heard in media and conversations or have used ourselves. Many people use the term pressure points interchangeably with trigger points. Although the two terms sound similar, they are not and understanding the differences will help us communicate our needs from client to health professional.

Pressure points derive from the supposed meridian points in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Indian Ayurveda and Siddha medicine, and martial arts. They refer to areas on the human body that may produce significant pain or other effects when manipulated in a specific manner. There are 361 pressure points on 14 meridians. The points are the

and more space are the main factors in to how the swing speed increases. We create a steeper attack angle giving our arms and shoulders more space and time for a bigger rotation.

In the drill and exercise pictured, we’re focusing on separating the shoulders and arms away from the body. This creates width in the backswing and will train your hands to go to a different height and direction. Over time your hands and body will adjust to this new position.

Try these drills out on your own. If you have any questions, contact your DAC Golf Teaching Pro or DAC Fitness Professional.

Trigger points develop in the myofascia, mainly in the center of a muscle belly. Trigger points are painful "knots" in your muscles that can be very sensitive to touch/ pressure. They may form after acute trauma or by repetitive micro-trauma, leading to stress on muscle fibers. It causes the muscle fibers to be stuck in a contracted state.

To understand whether you are dealing with a pressure point or trigger point keep these three ideas in mind; location, feel, and action.

• LOCATION: is the pain in the muscle or in a nondescript location?

• FEEL: is the affected area unusually dense compared to the tissue around it? Is the pain consistent?

• ACTION: is there restricted movement? Is there referred pain?

You are most likely dealing with a pressure point if the pain always occurs in the same area, you can operate normally, and it’s not painful. If the sensations are located in the muscle belly and you experience pain when lengthening the muscle, it is most likely a trigger point.

An Update from the Clubhouse Manager

Happy fall, DAC! The temperature is gradually dropping, bringing back outdoor activities. After a long, hot summer there's no place I'd rather be than on one of our inviting patios. Whether it's the co-ed locker room patio after a round of golf, the 19th Hole patio with fellow members, or watching your children play on the event lawn from The Elm patio, DAC offers the perfect setting, complete with a refreshing drink in hand. Reservations can be made at the front desk, on our website, or through the app. While reservations are not required they are suggested, given the patios' popularity. Spaces tend to fill up rapidly, so it's wise to plan ahead. We're also excited to announce the return of Music on the Lawn! Exciting changes are in store for our Friday nights at the Club. Be sure to stay tuned for dates and featured bands in our weekly eNews and online. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Club!
