A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT WARREN SIBLEY Popularity is a funny thing. Whether you are talking junior high life, fashion, social media, or country club life, when dealing with popularity, the “rose bush” of that endeavor often comes with thorns. When surveying the Club, especially during the busiest season (summer), it doesn’t take too close of an examination to realize we are brimming with activity in every area of Club life. As a Board, this is what we plan and hope for; a vibrant community with full tennis courts, tee sheets, pool loungers, and dinner reservations. As it has arrived, change naturally follows. I’ve had some members make the comment that it seems we have many more members than we used to. While it is true our golf membership is capped, and there’s a waiting list, many can remember a time when we had many more golf members than now. One of the differences is the average age of our membership has gone down bringing with it families. Mom, Dad and their children now all make full use of our club. 250 reservations for a Wednesday (Family night) is not uncommon. Our parents have noticed the camps now fill up as soon as they open and people join the waitlist (all of our summer camps are indeed full and have waitlists). Along with the very popular camps, this will be one of the biggest and best Fourth of July celebrations we’ve ever had. In order to accommodate all members, we need to structure how the day will unfold. We will now have an orderly way to ensure we’ve made it possible for our members to partake in the festivities. This 4th of July every membership (immediate family) gets 1 (one) parking pass. We will not be allowing anyone in the gates without a parking pass. We will allow each membership to purchase 1 (one) additional parking pass for $25. All the loungers at the pool will be first come, first serve. Reservations are for dining purposes only, and a table will be reserved for you. If you only wish to come and enjoy the fireworks, arrival time for that will be after 8:30 pm and we recommend you bring your own blanket and/or chairs to watch them. This is different from years past. There is greater detail in this newsletter on page 10. Please call the Club with questions. These are exciting times. Along with this heightened interest and activity comes the necessity of patience and

planning. We were spoiled when a Tuesday afternoon meant an open golf course, empty tennis courts, and bored lifeguards. Now that our neighbors and friends have decided to join us, we need to modify the way we enjoy the Club as we welcome them. Our membership represents the variety of our neighborhoods and the “worlds” we live in. I encourage all of our members to continue to respect those around us. This goes for the way we treat our great employees, the character of our speech, the volume of our music, the way we dress and chose to comport ourselves. DAC is great now and will continue to be because of the respect we show each other. We want all our members to know that we are striving to continue to raise the standards. Brent, our GM, has charged his staff with exceeding our expectations. He will continue to raise the bar and raise our level of service. You have undoubtedly noticed that construction is continuing. We are making headway and doing our best to get our facilities improved in a timely fashion. It’s incredible what a difference these improvements will make. They will be more than worth the wait. I hope you noticed Lance’s note regarding Miguel Aguilar. He recently completed his Class A with the PGA. We are very proud of him and know how hard he continues to work. My last note regards communication. The Board continues to strive to improve in disseminating information. Brent, Kelsey and the entire team are working hard to provide you all the pertinent information in the best way possible. They are utilizing various ways to get news out. You will notice newsletters, printed and digital, weekly emails, notifications on your app, and others. Occasionally, I have a member ask me for details on a coming event, or maybe why some piece of information was not given out. A vast majority of the time, the desired information was given out, and simply may have been missed or overlooked. While we continue to seek to find ways to best inform the membership, I encourage you to take notice of what we do send out. You might be surprised how much information we include in our communications to our members.

FU O CO AT T HE PO O L

From the Desk of Cari Wheatley There is a buzz around town regarding your Club! DAC is kicking off the summer with an influx of tours and application submissions. If you have friends that would be a good fit for the Club, send them my way! Your Club’s calendar is full of activities for every age and interest, and participation continues to grow. We are excited to create and execute memorable times for you, your family, and your guests! A few things I am looking forward to this summer: • S’mores Night at the Pool: Have S’more fun together every Tuesday night at the pool! Enjoy complimentary S’mores from 5:00-8:00 pm • FiTennis: The newest addition to summer at the Club is FiTennis! Wednesdays 6:30-8:00 AM, come work on your footwork, agility, strength and conditioning with Ashley Gellert and a Tennis Pro. Flip to page 8 for more details! • Back to School Bash: Head over to ClubKids on August 6th for our Back-to-School Bash! Celebrate the new school year by showing off your dance moves to a DJ playing the hottest jams, a delicious buffet, and lots of games! It is going to be a great summer at DAC, and we look forward to seeing you around the Club! Cheers,

Cari Wheatley

Membership Director cwheatley@dacstaff.org

I saw an opportunity this summer with our main dining room under renovation. The concept for the novel DAC Show Kitchen is fast-casual. I used this idea and created a pop-up restaurant at the Pool this summer, naming it “Fuoco at the Pool”. We will only be using wood as our heat source for all our preparation on the menu. At the Pool pop-up kitchen you will find an Argentinian inspired grill and wood-fire pizza ovens. Our pizzas are house-made from start to finish and bake in about 90 seconds. You will also find Grab and Go Salads with fresh proteins cooked to order and finished right in front of you. Our goal is 10 minutes or less in cooking time. This is a self-service location, you will place and pick up your order at the outdoor kitchen. Our times for pop-up experiences at the Pool is very fluid. It all depends on the weather and the Club activity. This allows us to take care of the membership as a whole, when needed. We will be open Tuesdays-Saturdays at noon and wrapping up at 8:00 pm. On Wednesdays and Fridays we will close the pop-up kitchen at 4:30 pm so everyone can enjoy Family Night and Music on the Lawn. On Sundays, we will open later in the afternoon, once our Sunday Brunch Buffet wraps up. The culinary staff is excited to serve you with this new experience, and even if you don’t swim you should stop by and see what is happening! Happy Eating!

Chef Michael

KEVIN NETTLES, SUPERINTENDENT

has caused the turf to be weak. In July and August, we will be verti-cutting and topdressing fairways and approaches. Our tees will be aeriated and top-dressed during this time. In addition to regular maintenance that is scheduled, our horticulturist is working on plans for our new patios, which will be full of color.

COURSE CONDITIONS We have had several weather challenges this year, besides a record freeze in February, we have had 18.5 inches of rain through the middle of June. We did not have temperatures conducive to growing Bermuda grass until the second week of June. The crews have finally replaced all the turf and landscape that was damaged on the tees and green surrounds. They are now working on planting grass in the rough areas where the shade

In late August we plan to install our new bridge on 17 Blue. While the contractor is here, we will be reshaping the cart paths and area behind 18 Blue and 9 Gold where the new patios will be located behind the Locker Rooms.

Meet the Club Horticulturist, Shelly Richardson! You may have noticed a few changes around the Club lately, particularly in the landscape areas. That is me! I am Shelly Richardson, the new Club Horticulturist for DAC. I am so thrilled to be here and to see all the potential for more exciting new things around the property. I have my degree in Horticulture and many years of experience working at golf clubs and country clubs around DFW. I also worked for two years at the Dallas Arboretum where I learned to think outside of the box on the way to do seasonal color changes, which is what I specialize in. I will be writing a little column here with gardening tips, ideas and suggestions that I hope you all enjoy! I look forward to meeting many of you. If you see me around the Club, please be sure to say hello! 6 | DALLAS ATHLETIC CLUB | JULY / AUGUST 2021

PRO TIP: ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL by Joe Sopko,

J U N I O R D E V E LO P M E N T

Head Tennis Pro/Junior Coordinator

Keeping your eyes on the ball is important for executing any shot on the tennis court. If you ever watch a pro player in slow motion, you will notice one thing that is quite a bit different from the average recreational player, their eye contact with the ball. Roger Federer is a great example of this, but you can take any other professional and see where their eyes are at all times. More often than not, they will have their eyes dead set on the ball.
