Iowa Dairy Princess to be crowned August 11
ANKENY, Iowa – Some girls dream about being crowned Miss America, but young women who live or work on Iowa’s dairy farms often dream of being crowned a dairy princess. The Iowa Division of Midwest Dairy Association will host the coronation of the 2010-11 Iowa State Dairy Princess in the Multi-Media Center of the Cattle Barn at the state fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa, August 11. Twelve young women will compete for the chance to be the goodwill ambassador for Iowa’s dairy industry and make public relations appearances over the course of the next year. Each contestant will be judged on her knowledge of the dairy industry, enthusiasm for dairy promotion, communication skills and personality. The participants in this year’s contest are: • Shelby Hammel, 18, daughter of David and Karla Hammel of Dorchester, representing Allamakee County; • Alyssa Meyer, 18, daughter of Mike and Laure Meyer of Sumner, representing Bremer County; • Amanda Franck, 18, daughter of Randy and Elaine Franck of DeWitt, representing the Iowa Brown Swiss Assocation; • Kendra Moser, 18, daughter of Todd and Lynn Moser of Colesburg, representing Clayton County; • Lindsey Tauke, 18, daughter of Tom and Joan Tauke of Greeley, representing Delaware County; • Kristy Demmer, 20, daughter of Rick and Kathy Demmer of Peosta, representing Dubuque County; • Chelsey Fagle, 18, daughter of Dan and Melissa Fagle and the late Sally Fagle of Fayette, representing Fayette County; • Leeta Sivesind, 18, daughter of Dan and Jane Sivesind of Waukon, representing the Iowa Guernsey Association; • Anna Troester, 21, daughter of Mark and Rondee Troester of Garnavillo, representing the Iowa Holstein Association; • Abbey Adkins, 20, daughter of Mark and Anita Adkins of Ames, representing the Iowa Milking Shorthorn Association; • Lora Luitjens, 19, daughter of Leslie and Norma Luitjens of Ashton, representing Osceola County; and • Carly Lyons, 19, daughter of Doug and Lynnette Lyons of Castalia, representing Winneshiek County. The current Iowa Dairy Princess, Katie Adams of Waucoma, and the Alternate Iowa Dairy Princess, Stacy Fitzpatrick of Greeley, will be honored at the coronation for representing the dairy industry in Iowa for the past year. Their reigns will be completed during the Iowa State Fair, and the new Princess and Alternate will begin their duties September 1. Both the Princess and the Alternate will also receive scholarships sponsored by Midwest Dairy Association.

As the Iowa Dairy Princess, Katie Adams enjoyed meeting dairy producers from across Iowa as well as sharing her passion for the dairy industry with consumers. On August 11, Adams will pass her crown onto the next Iowa Dairy Princess.
11, but she will get a few more days after that crowning to live out her reign. Through a year of serving as the official goodwill ambassador for Iowa dairy producers, Adams has enjoyed meeting dairy farmers across Iowa, as well as sharing her passion for the dairy industry with consumers. Adams admits that she will miss her princess role when it is over. All the shows and events – including her favorite memory of throwing the first pitch at the Iowa Cubs baseball game – will be something she will always cherish, but she hopes the next Iowa State Dairy Princess enjoys the crown and
the spokesperson role just as much as she did. “The Iowa State Dairy Princess is someone who can target all different age groups,” Adams said. “She has the power to travel all over the state and spread the true facts about dairy farming.” A title that seemed out of reach for Adams was worn with pride and lived to the fullest. From the Alternate Fayette County Dairy Princess to the 20092010 Iowa State Dairy Princess, Adams has made the most of her promoting role for the dairy producers of Iowa.
Swiss Valley Farms would like to say “Thank You” to Katie Adams for serving the dairy industry over the past year.
