Adams enjoys year as Iowa Dairy Princess Waucoma native shares passion of dairy producers with consumers By Jill Warren Staff writer WAUCOMA, Iowa – When Katie Adams was selected as the Alternate Fayette County Dairy Princess, her hopes of competing for the Iowa State Dairy Princess that year were not in the picture. But through a turn of events Adams landed herself under the crown and sash of that very title anyway. Adams is finishing up her reign as the 2009-2010 Iowa State Dairy Princess after enjoying a year of serving as the official goodwill ambassador for the dairy producers of Iowa, and she has enjoyed every opportunity the role has

offered. From handing out ribbons at dairy shows to speaking at county coronations to attending farm tours, Adams has enjoyed the people she has gotten to meet and the messages she has been able to spread. “I love the audiences that are anxious to learn,” Adams said. “I like both young kids and adults. Their questions are obviously different, but they are all still so interested in learning.” Whether it is curious consumers or dairy producers, themselves, Adams loves sharing her main messages about the goodness of dairy and the passion of producers with evPhoto by Kelli Boylen

eryone she comes in contact with. “If it wasn’t for the hardworking and dedicated dairy farmers, consumers wouldn’t have wholesome and nutritious products,” Adams said. “That’s what I like to make sure I get across no matter where I go or what I do.” Nineteen-year-old Adams knows first-hand about the hard work that goes into producing those dairy products. She grew up on her family’s dairy farm near Waucoma, Iowa. Her parents, Scott and Jeanie, along with her older brother, Nathan,

now run the 180-cow operation called Adaway Dairy. Adaway Dairy is made up of a combination of Holsteins, Jerseys, Ayrshires and Brown Swiss. All the youngstock are raised on the farm, and 750 acres of crops are harvested. Adams – an incoming sophomore at Iowa State University studying dairy science – spends her time away from her princess duties actively involved in the happenings of the family dairy farm. Whether it is milking cows, vaccinating animals or doing fieldwork, Adams believes

her involvement on the farm helped her prepare for the princess competition, as well as instilled the skills necessary to successfully deliver messages to both producers and consumers. “Growing up on a farm has given me a passion for the dairy industry,” Adams said. “I’ve always been excited to learn new things, and it has made me very knowledgeable.” Adams will crown the next Iowa State Dairy Princess during the Iowa State Fair Aug.
