Progressives Congress (APC), Buhari expressed optimism that the party’s vision remains intact under Tinubu’s administration.

“When Nigerians handed the baton of leadership to the APC in 2015, it was a mandate to lay the foundation for a new Nigeria where the poor get opportunities for a better future and I am glad that the vision is not lost. It was a victory of all those who wish the country’s good,” he recalled.

Meanwhile, encomiums have continued to trail the commemoration of the birthday anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @ 73.

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has extended his goodwill and warm wishes to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the occasion of his 73rd birthday. Jonathan in a birthday message he personally signed, congratulated Tinubu and acknowledged his service to the nation, especially his contributions towards restoring democracy after a long spell of military rule.

The former President stated: “I join your family and fellow compatriots in celebrating and congratulating you as you mark your birthday.

“I acknowledge your service to our dear nation, especially your role in the pro-democracy movement that led to the return of the current democratic dispensation.”

Recalling that as a leader, Tinubu has shown remarkable dedication in contributing to national development, Jonathan

noted the role played by the President in serving as a critical opposition voice and as the Governor of Lagos State and now President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has also felicitated with his boss @ 73. Stressing the importance of peace, stability and progress in the country, the VP urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shettima who made the call during the closing ceremony of Tafsir (reading of the Quran) for the month of Ramadan in the State House Mosque in Abuja, Friday, noted that prayer remains the fortress of the believer, the sanctuary where hopes are nurtured and destinies are shaped.

He said: “It is our greatest weapon against despair and the most powerful armour for those entrusted with leadership. In this spirit, I urge us all to continue praying for our beloved nation and the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

“May Almighty Allah grant him the wisdom, strength, and resolve to continue steering the ship of our great nation towards peace, unity, and prosperity.

May He protect him from harm, fortify his heart with courage, and guide his every effort in service to the Nigerian people”.

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah has also congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his 73rd birthday.

Mbah saluted the president’s

devotion to service and building brotherly understanding among the various sections of the nation.

He said; “On behalf of the Government and the good people of Enugu State, this is wishing you a happy 73rd birthday.

“Yours has been a life devoted to service and nurturing a deeper understanding and sense of brotherhood amongst Nigerians. These are enduring values and the hallmarks of true statesmanship.

“We wish you many more years in good health and joy. We also pray God to order your steps and grant you His uncommon grace as you guide our nation through these challenging times to a prosperous and surer future.”

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in his felicitations said the President remains an architect of reformed Nigeria, with exemplary courage and selflessness to change the old order and transform Nigeria to an enviable height.

Tajuddeen Abbas and his deputy, Benjamin Kalu. Others are ranking members of the Upper and Lower legislative houses of the 10th National Assembly.

Atiku’s latest claims baseless, distracting – Presidency

The presidency says its attention has been drawn to unfounded allegations by former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, claiming to be the subject of an EFCC investigation regarding unsubstantiated financial dealings involving Lagos State.

“These claims, circulated through his media office, are false and reflect a troubling pattern of relying on social media gossip over substance,” Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, Information and Strategy, said in a statement on Friday.

“It is disheartening that a

politician of Atiku’s stature would lend credibility to baseless social media speculation to remain politically relevant,” Onanuga added.

He said President Bola Tinubu remained focused on addressing critical national challenges and advancing his administration’s agenda for Nigeria’s growth and stability.

The presidential aide said the president had neither the time nor the inclination to engage in petty political distractions.

“Atiku’s allegations are infantile and a transparent ploy to deflect from his political setbacks.

“His repeated attempts to drag the presidency and now

the Lagos State government into fabricated controversies reveal a desperate bid for attention amid his fading attempt to cobble a coalition,” Onanuga said.

He stated that since his defeat in the 2023 presidential election, the former vice president had failed to rise to the dignified role of an elder statesman.

Onanuga said rather than contributing constructively to the national discourse, he had chosen the path of divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations.

“We urge Atiku Abubakar to redirect his energy toward initiatives that foster unity, economic progress, and democratic stability – qualities

Women must take action to lead – TUC

Joan Nwagwu

The Chairperson of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) FCT Women Commission, Mrs Sandra Ogbonna, has urged women to take deliberate steps towards leadership through proactive action rather than waiting for opportunities.

Ogbonna made this call at the International Women’s Day 2025 celebration with the theme “Accelerate Action Towards Occupying Positions of Authority” in Abuja on Saturday.

She stated that leadership positions must be actively pursued, as they are not freely given.

Ogbonna noted the persistent gender gap in leadership, noting that in spite women’s contributions, decision-making spaces remain dominated by men.

She called on women to equip themselves with knowledge, support one another, challenge barriers, and advocate for policy reforms that promote inclusivity.

“We must break self-imposed limitations and take our rightful place in leadership,” she said, encouraging women to engage in governance and politics.

She also urged members of the TUC Women’s Commission to participate actively in discussions and decision-making processes.

The Secretary of the Commission, Chika Ukachukwu, underscored the importance of resilience and leadership in advancing women’s empowerment.

Ukachukwu stressed that women’s achievements must never be overlooked.

“The knowledge we gain in spaces like this is invaluable, you may not realise its significance now, but one day, you will,” she said.

She reaffirmed the TUC’s commitment to celebrating women’s contributions and urged attendees to reflect, learn, and continue pushing for gender equality.

“Resilience is key to overcoming obstacles and making a lasting impact,” she added.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT council, Grace Ike, called on women to be intentional in supporting one another, stressing that mere lip service will not drive progress in gender parity.

Nigeria urgently needs.

“Lastly, the former vice president should know that the EFCC, as an independent institution, operates within its statutory mandate without external influence.

“Any insinuation otherwise is a disservice to the agency’s professionalism and the rule of law.

“The presidency remains committed to transparency, accountability and the pursuit of national development –priorities that demand our undivided attention,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Reflecting on her own journey, she acknowledged the support she received from women like the union’s secretary but emphasised that such support must be based on merit rather than emotion or gender solidarity.

“Without even questioning my competence, she supported me simply because she believed in women. But beyond that, we must ensure that the women we support are capable.

“We should not blindly follow someone just because she is a woman. Let us do our due diligence, and if she is competent, why not support her?” Ike stated.

Ike, who was the guest speaker at the event criticised women who refuse to support other women due to personal interests, describing them as obstacles to real progress.

She cited an instance within the NUJ where some men were more willing to back a female candidate than certain women, one of whom openly opposed her candidacy.

“The men said, ‘Women don’t support women,’ but we proved them wrong. However, one woman insisted that unless it was her preferred candidate, she would never support another woman”.

Calling for a shift from performative activism to measurable action, she urged women to evaluate their impact before each Women’s Day celebration.

“We must not just gather every year to talk. By 2026, we should be able to point to tangible achievements from 2025. How many women did we uplift? Who did we empower? If we do not have results, then we are merely running in circles,” she said.

Ike proposed initiatives such as legislative advocacy, gendersensitive laws, and lobbying for special seats for women in political and decision-making spaces.

She also stressed the importance of mentorship and grassroots economic empowerment.

“It is not about having millions. Have you given a woman ₦20,000 to start a petty trade? Have you given ₦5,000 to help someone start a small recharge card business? These are the real actions that change lives,” she argued.

She warned against hypocrisy in the women’s movement, vowing to expose those who claim to support gender equality but work against it in private.

“If I were to conduct investigative journalism, I would visit people’s homes and ask about them. That is how we will identify those who merely hold microphones and talk but do nothing for women,” she added.

Ike called for a new, actiondriven movement, suggesting that the phrase “women supporting women” might be too long and instead advocating for “She for She” as a rallying call.

“At the current rate, gender parity will not be achieved until 2158. This delay is unacceptable. We must act decisively. Enough of the talk—let’s make women’s support intentional and impactful,” she declared.

The FCT Chairman of the TUC Commission, Comrade Paul Audu, called for urgent action to dismantle barriers preventing women from occupying leadership positions.

He praised the resilience and dedication of women across all sectors, emphasising their role in national development.

Audu acknowledged that in spite some progress, leadership spaces remain disproportionately occupied by men.

“Talent is not gendered! Competence knows no chromosomes! Yet, systemic barriers continue to hold back the incredible potential of our women,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the trade union movement’s commitment to equality, stressing that empowering women strengthens workplaces, policies, and society as a whole.

LP lawmakers yet to fund Party since assumption of office-Abure NEWS

National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Barr Julius Abure has frowned against instigation of parallel structures by some Party leaders, warning that such antiParty activities must surely attract grave consequences.

The National Chairman also revealed that elected members of the Party have not lived up to their financial obligations to the Party, since assumption of office, nearly two years ago.

Abure, while speaking at a town hall meeting organized by the

Lagos State chapter of the Party, also appealed to the ‘Obidient Family’ members to work towards owning the Party by registering with the Party and be qualified for the coming congresses in June and July 2025.

He said: “We are willing and ready to absorb all ‘Obidients’ into the LP.

All you need to do is to go to your ward as Obidient and register. The Party has only one structure, all other ones are counterfeit.

“A Party cannot have two conflicting structures, a Party can only have one structure and,,and I advice, if you do not want to be left

out of the scheme of things, find your way into the main structure. Those who are doing parallel structure, candidate structure will lose out at the end of the day.”

On the relationship between the Party elected members and the Party, Barr Abure said: “it is a fact that they don’t respect the Party, it is a fact that they don’t make contributions to the Party. As I speak with you today, we have not received one kobo at the National, from those we elected to the National Assembly.

“The responsibility of running this Party is still with the leadership

of the Party. As at today, we have six, 6, Senators, about 30 Representatives members and numerous House of Assembly members, but it will shock you to know that none of these lawmakers have contributed a dime to the Party since their election in 2023.

“Let them go, ask other parties, it is those elected under their platform that funded the Party. Today, most of them want to have control over their Local Government and for us to hand over their constituencies to them, yet they are not ready to work or partner with the party”

Fr. Alia presented a detailed list of facilities in Benue that could be revitalized through publicprivate partnerships, such as cattle ranches, breeding centers, and agricultural development projects. Speaker condemns murder of 16 travelers in Edo, demands urgent investigation

Tom Okpe, Abuja

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep Tanudeen Abbas has expressed profound sorrow and condemnation over the tragic killing of 16 hunters in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi Local Government Area, of Edo State.

According to reports, the hunters were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano State, for Sallah celebrations, falsely accused of kidnapping by local elements, and, in a shocking act of mob violence, captured on video and widely circulated, the attackers set the 16 men ablaze in broad daylight.

Speaker Abbas, according to

a press statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi on Saturday in Abuja, described the incident as “barbaric, cowardly, and unacceptable.”

The Speaker called on security agencies to initiate an immediate and thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

“The security agencies must swing into action immediately as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This is one madness too many. We must not allow such a horrific act to go unpunished.”

He emphasized that such brutal acts are incomprehensible in a society that upholds the sanctity of

human life, a value deeply rooted in both Islamic and Christian teachings.

He said at a time when adherents of both religions observe Ramadan and Lent periods dedicated to reflection, compassion, and mutual duty, the lives of our fellow citizens must be protected and respected above all.

“It is deeply disturbing that in our modern nation, fellow citizens can be subjected to such heinous violence, especially when our faith traditions teach us to honor the sanctity of every human life.

“This is one of the worst cowardly acts I have seen in decades,” the Speaker said.

By invoking the moral

imperatives common to Islam and Christianity, the Speaker noted that all Nigerians, regardless of their religious affiliation, are bound by a shared duty to care for one another.

“Nigerians, irrespective of their tribe or creed, should be able to move freely anywhere within the country without let or hindrance.”

While investigations are underway, Speaker Abbas urged calm and restraint.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, reaffirming Government’s commitment to upholding justice, rule of law, and fundamental human values celebrated during Ramadan and Lent.

14-year-old kills self over pregnancy in Benue

Kingsley Chukwuka

A 14-year-old Secondary School

Student, identified as Nicknes Ayo, has committed suicide after her mother pressured her to name the man who impregnated her.

The incident happened on Saturday at Egba in the Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

A neighbour who identified herself as Mama Enyi told our correspondent on the phone that the girl who was schooling in Otukpo returned home on Thursday with signs of pregnancy.

“Her mother, who noticed some signs of pregnancy, inquired from her if she was pregnant or not. It was after much pressure and a threat to be taken to a clinic in the village that the girl ran away.

“She was later found in her room, having taken a substance suspected to be bottle Gammalin, and she was rushed to the village clinic known as ‘Ghana Clinic’ in the village.

When contacted, the medical director of the clinic, Dr. Oyaje Sule, popularly known as Dr.

Ghana, said that the girl was brought to her clinic on Saturday morning.

He said, “It is true, they brought a 14-year-old girl to my clinic this morning and were suspected to have taken Gammalin when her mother pressured her to disclose who was responsible for her pregnancy.

SDP ‘ll resist takeover attempt by El- Rufai, others - National Secretary

Tunde Opalana, Abuja

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) will not yield ground to members who recently joined from other political platforms to truncate peace and progress within the party.

National Secretary of SDP, Dr. Olu Agunloye in a statement on Saturday said the party would resist any hostile takeover of the party by new members.

This is coming at the heels of the dust raised by the defection of the former governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El- rufai, his followers from the All progressives Congress (APC) and a few other political gladiators from other

parties.

Some members of SDP showed resentment to El-rufai’s joining of the party, expressing fear that infusion of new members might lead to explosion in SDP.

The Daily Times gathered that the position of party’s National Secretary was the immediate target of the El- rufai as rumoured had it that the incoming members plot negotiating their coming into SDP with ceding the national scribe position to the new group.

Even unconfirmed report had it that the El- rufai group eyed hijacking the state working committee of SDP in Kaduna State.

But on Saturday, Agunloye

declared that such negotiation was a ruse as the party is not ready to trade any party position with any platform or subject SDP to merging with any political party.

According to the National Secretary, new members must be ready to abide by SDP’s rules and constitution, irrespective of their mission for joining the party.

Agunloye in the statement said “APC and PDP, which have ruled Nigeria since 1999, have not done well.

“It is common knowledge that Nigeria is not where Nigerians expect it to be. Injustice, corruption, ‘money for vote’ elections, and high insecurity have led to economic crisis, massive

youth unemployment, and pervasive poverty.

“People are suffering, and many more are getting trapped in poverty by the day. In the face of these challenges, the emergence of SDP as an alternative platform for progress has become compelling.

“This is why all SDP leaders and state chairmen are required to reach out to all people desirous of good governance to join the crusade for sustainable development and not leave this task only to our dynamic and charismatic National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam,” he said.

Labour Party members defect to APC in Plateau

In a dramatic shift in Plateau State’s political landscape, key stakeholders from the Labour Party (LP) in the Northern Senatorial District have announced their decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a communique signed by Ayiki John Sati and thirteen others loyal to Gyang Yaya Zi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the party’s 2023 senatorial candidate for Plateau North, at the end of the Labour Party’s stakeholders meeting in Jos, they expressed their decision to defect from the Labour Party (LP) and join the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to leadership crises and structural deficits within the party at both national and state levels, which had left members divided and disillusioned.

The gathering, which included candidates from the 2023 general elections, local government officials, and party loyalists, culminated in a collective endorsement of Gyang Zi’s leadership and his proposed move to the APC.

The stakeholders expressed disappointment with the current state of the Labour Party, particularly at the national and state levels, where they observed severe leadership deficits.

“The issues considered at the meeting includes; the state of affairs of the Labour Party at the National Level and in Plateau State in particular, the leadership deficits and the struggle by

Aspirants and Candidates in ensuring the promotion and defence of the party and democracy, failure by the National and State leadership of the party to commence the restructuring of the party and other preparations for the 2025 Political Parties’ Activities.

“The mounted calls by members and lovers of the Justice and Rebirth Leader, Gyang Zi, SAN to reconsider his political interest and appropriately align himself viz v viz the members, the State and National interest, the state of politics in Nigeria especially in the countdown to 2025 Political Parties Congresses and Conventions, the Excellent Government Policy of Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as manifested by the giant developmental strides at the Federal Government Level and the need for our people in Plateau State to benefit”.

The ongoing internal leadership crisis, they argued, had divided the party into factions, leaving its members in a state of confusion and despair.

The meeting also highlighted the absence of tangible progress at the state level, with stakeholders noting that Plateau State had not witnessed the desired improvements without significant federal intervention.

Acknowledging the federal government’s contributions to the state, they collectively agreed that Gyang Zi should align with the APC to further push for development in

Plateau State, particularly through its ongoing “Renewed Hope Agenda” spearheaded by President Tinubu.

Among the key points discussed was the recognition of Gyang Zi’s leadership qualities, which have garnered him widespread support across the Plateau North Senatorial District.

“The meeting however, could not trace much positive impact of the present Government at the State Level on the Plateau and have no faith that there will be any better achievements without the Federal Government’s intervention and Presence on the Plateau; therefore, came to the

conclusion that Mr. President has done a lot to Plateau State, North Central Nigeria and hence deserves our support. Therefore, Gyang Zi, SAN should join the APC”.

The stakeholders praised his ability to listen and connect with the people, making him a unifying force in the area. As a result, they unanimously endorsed his move to the APC, believing it would offer better opportunities for Plateau State’s political and socio-economic advancement.

The group also emphasized the importance of a smooth transition into the APC and called on the ruling party’s leadership to extend a warm

welcome to Gyang Zi and his supporters. In line with this, they committed to mobilizing grassroots support to ensure a strong APC presence in Plateau North.

The defecting stakeholders believe that joining the APC will not only benefit their leader but also strengthen the party’s influence in the state and provide a more conducive environment for achieving good governance.

In a clear statement of defection, the group officially denounced their membership of the Labour Party, pledging allegiance to the APC. They urged other supporters of Gyang Zi to follow suit, highlighting the

need for unity in advancing the party’s goals.

The group also called for a focus on inclusivity, ensuring that women, youth, and marginalized groups remain active participants in the democratic process.

The communique noted that the meeting ended with a call for all political leaders in Plateau State to exercise restraint as the 2025 political activities approach. Stakeholders also took time to congratulate Gyang Zi on his recent elevation to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), further cementing his political stature.

Deeply disturbed and saddened by the gruesome mob killings of the individuals in question, the parliamentarians lamented that they were tragically stereotyped as Fulani kidnappers and brutally murdered in a despicable manner.

Natasha vs Akpabio: I acted in good faith, has nothing personal against her--Imasuen

Titus Akhigbe,Benin

The Labour Party (LP) Senator representing Edo South Senatorial district at the Senate, Senator Neda Imasuen, on Friday dismissed claims that he failed to properly handle the case between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio before his committee in the Senate saying he has nothing personal against anybody or fellow Senators.

Imasuen is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. He spoke to newsmen in Benin following the public outcry that the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions failed to ensure the proper handling of the matter of sexual harassment thereby calling on Senator Imasuen, to step aside to allow for an impartial investigation into allegations against the Senate President.

Senator Imasuen, said that he acted in good faith as the Senate Committee Chairman in the case brought before it regarding Senator Natasha Akpoti- Uduaghan representing Kogi Central Senatorial district and the Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

He said that those seeking his recall were hungry people who were recruited by some politicians in Kogi State and were briefed on what to do, having been handsomely paid and were therefore working for their money.

discovery reportedly sparked alarm among the vigilantes, who suspected the hunters of being kidnappers.

As tensions escalated, a mob gathered but the situation quickly spiraled out of control, leading to the lynching of the 16 northerners.

In a swift reaction to the incident, the governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo has assured that the killers of all the hunters along Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of the state would be made to face justice.

Okpebholo gave the assurance while speaking through the Chief Security Officer of Government House, SP Solomon Osaghale at Uromi during an assessment visit. He explained that he visited the community to assess the situation and ensure a thorough investigation is conducted to prevent a recurrence.

operations, investigation, and administration to his new role.

In his acceptance speech, AIG Grimah vowed to leverage his expertise to address the security challenges in Zone 10 and ensure the safety and security of the zone.

The new Assistant Inspector General for Zone 10 in Sokoto, was decorated in the presence of his wife and other family members.

The event saw several senior police officers in attendance, marking a significant milestone in Grimah’s distinguished career in the Nigeria Police Force.

The ceremony at Force Headquarters was a testament to his commitment and dedication to law enforcement in Nigeria, as he embarks on this new chapter of his career.

“But for what is happening in Benin, it’s something that I find very reprehensible. What I understand is that they have been paid, and as a matter of fact that some of them were taken to Kogi State to be briefed on what to do.

“And they were given money for this purpose. So, they are here to work for their money.

“But surprisingly, I don’t understand how somebody from Kogi State can be coming to Edo State and telling our own people here to start throwing stones on their roofs. That is something that is strange to me.

“I guess it’s the hunger that is in the land that has made some people sell their mothers, sell their parents, and sell whatever for a piece of meal. I can understand their plight.” he said.

Imasuen, who appreciated the Senate leadership for appointing him as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions said it was a privilege for him coming from Edo State to occupy such position at the committee level and vowed to put the records straight to clear the Senate of any misconception.

“ I want to put it on record here that the issue that was before my committee was on a conduct on the floor of the Senate and has absolutely nothing to do with sexual harassment. Sexual harassment came after the first petition that was brought before my committee.

“We have standing rules and those rules must be followed. It is not a one-man committee but a committee of about 29 members and I am only the chairman and all manners of petition come to my table and for anyone to suggest that somebody was targeted is misplaced and I just want to say that I was in no way biased in the discharge of the responsibility.

“On the issue of sexual harassment, the first petition that was presented was signed by the petitioner which is against the rules of the Senate but was supposed to be signed by someone

else either from her Constituency or by any other person other than the petitioner but we had to reject the petition because it was signed by the petitioner and when the petition came and I said it was dead on arrival because it was not properly brought before the Senate committee, maybe that was what angered them.

“She later presented the petition two days later without an address but with a phone number and when the owner of the phone number was contacted to appear before the committee, he refused to address the committee on the pretext that the committee was biased.

“ We could not hear the issue of sexual harassment because it was already before a competent court. However, we had wanted to hear the petition but the petitioner bluntly refused to address the committee on the excuse that the committee was biased. So, anyone claiming that I was biased is either not conversant with the rules of the house or is just outrightly being mischievous”.

The Senator who cited instance of lack of understanding of the Senate rules by those asking for his recall said that he wished them well, adding that they should continue in their bid to recall him.

Meanwhile, a group, under the aegis of Constituents of Edo South Senatorial District and the Human Rights Community, has called for the recall of Senator Imasuen, describing the Senator as unfit to continue to represent the people of Edo South.

Briefing newsmen in Benin, Comrade Kola Edokpayi ,who led some constituents from the Edo South Senatorial District demanded Senator Imasuen’s recall.

Edokpayi alleged that his tenure at the Senate has been marked by failure and gross betrayal of public trust.

“We the people of Edo South Senatorial District hereby declare a total loss of confidence on Senator Neda Bernard Imasuen.

“His tenure in the Nigerian Senate has been marked by failure, corruption, abuse of office and gross betrayal of public trust.

“We refuse to allow an individual unfit for public service to continue representing us. Therefore, we formally initiate his recall and demand his immediate investigation, prosecution and removal from office.

“We issue a 14 -day ultimatum to the relevant authorities and, if no action is taken, we will mobilise mass protest, pursue legal action and escalate our demands nationally and internationally.

“Edokpayi said.

Edokpayi called on INEC to begin an immediate verification of recall signatures and schedule a referendum saying, “Any delay will be considered a deliberate attempt to undermine democracy. “

Celebrating the establishment of national infectious diseases centre in Benue

There is every reason to celebrate a high impact intervention with the potential for advancing the health of citizens and the economic growth in job creation and investment.

The establishment of the new National Infectious Diseases Centre in Vandeikya, Benue State, certainly calls for celebration, not because it is the third major federal health facility in the state after the Federal Medical Center in Makurdi and Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo, but because it will significantly impact the health sector and economic well-being of citizens.

At the forefront of this celebration is the state Commissioner for Health and Social Services, Dr Ortese Yanmar, who congratulated the Executive Governor of Benue State, Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, whose visionary leadership and persistent lobbying led to the establishment of the National Infectious Diseases Centre.

“The Governor’s visionary leadership has brought hope and relief to the citizens of Benue State, and this centre

will undoubtedly play a crucial role in preventing, detecting, and responding to infectious diseases outbreaks

“The centre will provide essential services, including diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases. This is crucial in reducing the burden of these diseases on the population and improving overall public health.

“It is prioritizing the health and wellbeing of the people. This project is a shining example of a people-oriented initiative that will make a real difference in the lives of many,” Yanmar said.

When it comes to the issue of infectious diseases, the establishment of the National Infectious Diseases Centre will bring numerous benefits to Benue State. It will improve disease surveillance and outbreak response, allowing for quicker detection and response to outbreaks. This is particularly important for Benue State, which has struggled with outbreaks like Lassa fever.

The centre will provide advanced diagnostic facilities, enabling healthcare professionals to accurately identify infectious diseases. This will lead to more

effective treatment and better patient outcomes. It will also offer specialized care and treatment for infectious diseases, reducing the need for referrals to other states or countries. This will not only improve patient outcomes but also reduce healthcare costs.

In the area of research and development, the centre will facilitate research into infectious diseases, leading to the development of new treatments, vaccines, and diagnostic tools which will benefit not only Benue State but also the entire country. It is equally an opportunity to provide training and capacity-building programmes for healthcare professionals, enhancing their skills in infectious disease management. This will certainly improve the overall quality of healthcare in Benue State.

Also of great importance to Benue is the fact that the siting of the centre in Vandeikya will lead to job creation, economic activities, and investments in various areas which will have positive impact on the local economy and improve the standard of living for residents.

Overall, the establishment of the

National Infectious Diseases Centre will have a significant positive impact on Benue State, improving healthcare outcomes, promoting economic growth, and enhancing the state’s capacity to respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

It is instructive to state that the work of the National Infectious Diseases Centre will be vast, given the trend of infectious diseases in the country, which have remained a significant public health concern.

Some of the most prevalent infectious diseases in the country include Lassa Fever, a viral hemorrhagic illness caused by the Lassa virus. In 2024, Nigeria reported 1,059 confirmed cases and 175 deaths across 28 states. Malaria and HIV/ AIDS which have been a major public health problem in Nigeria and primary focus of research, and Measles, a highly contagious viral disease of which 8,345 cases were confirmed in a latest report across 36 states.

Another infectious disease is Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM), a serious bacterial infection that causes swelling of the brain and spinal cord and led to many deaths in the country, the

latest being the death of 53 in Kebbi State alone. Others include Mpox, Cholera, YellowFever, and many others that have posed significant health concerns in Nigeria.

These infectious diseases are often exacerbated by factors such as poor sanitation, inadequate healthcare, and economic constraints. Efforts to strengthen disease surveillance, improve healthcare infrastructure, and promote public awareness are essential in combating these diseases.

The National Infectious Disease Center, is therefore a vital institution that will play crucial role in protecting the health and well-being of citizens through detection, investigation, and responding to infectious disease outbreaks, which can have devastating consequences on public health.

Tinubu Bayelsa Rally: PDP chieftain dismisses Diri’s security concerns

AHERHOKE OKIOMA, YENAGOA

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) SouthSouth zonal secretary, George Turnah, has dismissed the security concerns raised by Governor Douye Diri over a proposed mega rally in support of President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to be held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

He also defended his association with Wike, declaring that there is a right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly in Nigeria. Governor Douye Diri, during a recent meeting with Bayelsa Elders raised alarm over the proposed rally being organised by The New Associates, noting that the rally was part of the plan to instigate chaos in Bayelsa.

However, Turnah, in a statement by his media assistant, Kelvin Loveday, expressed disappointment over Diri’s outburst, stating that there is no intention to destabilise Bayelsa State.

He assured the Ijaw nation of his respect, loyalty, and commitment as an Ijaw man, stressing that his political group is only interested in mobilising support for President Tinubu’s administration in the South South Zone, devoid of ulterior motives.

According to him, the political group, The New Associates be officially launched in Bayelsa on April 12, 2025, adding that arrangements are in top gear to ensure a hitch-free outing, including formal notifications to relevant security organizations in the state as required by law.

Turnah frowned at the undue politicalisation of the proposed rally, maintaining that ethnicity has no

place in politics.

On his election as the PDP Zonal secretary, he queried why it was problematic if he occupied a position meant for a son of the soil of Bayelsa or Ijaw, wondering if he was not qualified to do so.

Turnah reminded Governor Diri that the Ogbia leaders and elders he has asked to call him to order were the same leaders who, in 2019, requested that he should not support the Governor’s ambition at the time, a request he respectfully ignored.

Turnah reiterated that he is not only a member of the PDP but also a serving Zonal Secretary of the Party in the South -South, wondering which other office the Governor was accusing him of occupying if he was truly not a member of the PDP.

He further expressed surprise at Diri’s anger over his association with Wike, adding that he has the

constitutional right to freedom of association.

Turnah commended Diri on his many achievements and pledged his continued support for the prosperity administration led by Governor Diri.

He therefore called on the teeming youths, women, political class across party lines and all lovers of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to come out on enmasse, and show their appreciation to the President and FCT Minister for their special love for the Bayelsa State and Ijaw nation, clearly demonstrated through the facilitation and appointment of notable Bayelsans into positions of trust in the renewed hope administration.

Trump wants the war to end. But Putin wants much more

US President Donald Trump said he thinks Vladimir Putin wants peace. Ukraine and its European allies don’t believe he does, while the Russian leader himself said he wants peace but then refused to sign up to it when presented with the option.

What Putin really wants, though, is much, much bigger. The Russian president has made no secret of the fact that he believes Ukraine should not exist as an independent state and he has repeatedly said he wants NATO to shrink back to its Cold War-era size.

But more than anything, he wants to see a new global order — and he wants Russia to play the starring role in it. Putin and several of his most trusted allies emerged from the remnants of the KGB, the Sovietera intelligence agency. They have never forgotten the humiliation of the fall of the Soviet Union and are not happy with the way the world has turned out since then.

Putin rose to power during the chaos of the 1990s, when the Russian economy collapsed and had to be

rescued by the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank – another humiliation for the former superpower.

But from 2000, when Putin became president, steadily rising oil prices made Russia and many Russians richer than ever before. And Russia had a voice. It was invited into the G7 group of the world’s largest economies – renamed the G8 after it joined.

But this was not enough for the Russian leader, Kristine Berzina, a managing director at the German Marshal Fund of United States, told CNN.

“Putin was happy to throw all that away on behalf of his citizens because of higher geopolitical aims,” Berzina said. Russia was expelled from the G8, sanctioned by the West and ostracized on the global stage because of its aggression against Ukraine.

“That doesn’t work within Russia’s understanding of its own exceptionalism. It is the largest country in the world, the richest in (natural) resources, so how can it simply be one of the players?” she said.

The vehicle’s GPS data indicated the rental car was last on the interstate westbound around 3:27 p.m. that day, coinciding with a fatal pileup accident on the same interstate during a winter storm, according to a release from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

A fatal crash on westbound Interstate 40 on March 13 involved multiple vehicles caught on a road that was covered in snow and ice, according to Arizona DPS.

The fatal accident involved 22 vehicles and 36 drivers and occupants, resulting in two fatalities and 16 injured individuals who were transported for medical care, DPS said.

“It is not known if this (rental) vehicle was involved in the accident,” the sheriff’s office investigating the family’s disappearance noted.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Los Angeles is working with the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office to locate the family of three, CNN affiliate KPNX reported.

Advertising Tribunal orders arrest of Aero Contractors’ MD over violations

The Advertising Offences Tribunal (AOT) has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the managing director, Aero Contractor Company of Nigeria, Captain Ado Sanusi.

The bench warrant was because the airline boss failed to appear before the tribunal in an ongoing case concerning alleged violations of Nigerian advertising laws.

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) had filed a 22-count charge against Captain Sanusi and Aero Contractors, accusing them of exposing advertisements targeted at the Nigerian market without obtaining the necessary approval from the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP).

The council said, the airline’s boss action contravenes the act

that established the Nigerian advertising regulations.

The case was initially scheduled for hearing on February 26, 2025 but during the proceedings, Captain Sanusi was absent, prompting his legal representatives to assure the tribunal of his presence at the next hearing while also pleading for leniency. Despite these assurances, the defendant failed to appear on the adjourned date.

Given Captain Sanusi’s continued absence, the Advertising Offences Tribunal, in line with its mandate to enforce compliance with advertising regulations, issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

The tribunal has ordered that he be presented at its next sitting, scheduled for May 8, 2025. Further updates on the case are expected following the tribunal’s next session in May.

Industry leaders urge managers to build highperformance teams for growth

Business leaders, corporate executives, and industry stakeholders have called on managers to prioritize building high-performance teams, emphasizing that leadership is about empowering people, not just holding positions.

This message was central to discussions at the World Managers Appreciation Day (WMAD) celebration in Lagos during the week, organized by Business Leadership Innovation and Management (BLIM) in collaboration with Ideas House.

employees, low productivity, and high turnover rates. “We want to make WMAD a global movement. It is time we recognize and celebrate the managers who drive businesses forward, not just in Nigeria but worldwide,” Salami said.

Stakeholders at the event also stressed the importance of mentorship in leadership. Founder and CEO of BLIM, Dr. Abiodun Ajiborode, urged managers to go beyond daily operations and focus on developing future leaders within their organizations.

the staff, thereby positively impacting performance levels.

“By equipping our teams with advanced skills and continuous training, the Academy will deliver a positive and significant impact on operation and maintenance practices, which in turn will ensure the reliability, efficiency, and availability of the Plant,” he expressed. The ceremony organised to commence the 2025 academic session was attended by senior members of the management team.

Programmes in the Learning Academy are structured into the Technical School and the Leadership Development School. The faculty under the Technical School includes electrical, mechanical, instrumentation & control, chemicals and oil, and facility management. The Leadership Development School, which is non-technical, focuses on digital innovation, poise, and leadership development interventions.

Participants benefit from comprehensive training provided by in-house subject-matter experts, practical sessions, simulations, case studies, and coaching, mentoring, and hands-on learning opportunities.

The managing sirector of Ideas House, Kehinde Salami, stressed that effective leadership is about achieving excellence through people. He challenged managers to reflect on their leadership style by examining whether they are truly nurturing their teams for long-term success.

“Leadership is not about titles; it is stewardship. A manager’s success is measured by how well they develop their people.

If you are not building a highperformance team, then you are not truly leading,” Salami declared. Salami emphasized that one of the biggest barriers to effective leadership is the absence of a strong workplace culture. He urged managers to be intentional about creating an environment that fosters innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.

“A high-performance team does not happen by accident. It is built through clear values, structured processes, and a culture where people feel empowered to grow, even when they make mistakes,” he said.

He added that organizations that fail to establish a strong culture often struggle with disengaged

“As a manager, your responsibility is to train, support, and elevate your team. You must see every employee as a potential leader and give them the tools to grow. That is how great companies are built,” Ajiborode noted.

Salami reinforced this point, stating that true leadership is about replication. “Your job is not just to manage tasks but to create leaders. If your team cannot function without you, then you have not truly led,” he asserted. The event also highlighted efforts to expand the recognition of World Managers Appreciation Day beyond Nigeria. Organizers revealed plans to collaborate with corporate bodies, regulatory agencies, and governments to establish March 25 as a globally recognized day for honoring managers.

Ajiborode therefore urged businesses to implement leadership development strategies that prioritize people, performance, and purpose, even as he reiterated his commitment to advocating for leadership excellence across industries, as the movement for World Managers Appreciation Day gains momentum.

Oil marketing body has said, Dangote’s petrol sales in dollar has not taken off as depot prices of the product at the refinery remains unchanged.

President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets

Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy GillisHarry, while speaking on Arise Television during the week said, though the refinery management made announcement that sale of petroleum products would now be in dollars, it is yet to commence transactions in foreign currencies.

Gillis-Harry, further confirmed his members were still buying products in Naira, the local currency of Nigeria, and further stressed that, PETROAN had not been formally informed that any changes had been made to the sale of products, nor had the prices of fuel risen at the depots as of Wednesday.

“So as far as I know, up until yesterday, our members who bought products are still buying in Nigeria and Naira. And I don’t think that Dangote is looking for how to create any panic in the system.

“But he’s also crying out loud for how the business of the refinery should be stable, which

crucial in eliminating these threats,” Ndukwe stated in Awka on Friday.

Echoing this stance, SON’s State Coordinator in Anambra, Mr. Emmanuel Hussaini, highlighted the success of ongoing enforcement efforts made possible through NSCDC’s cooperation.

“Substandard goods endanger lives and businesses. Our joint enforcement campaigns have significantly curbed the distribution of harmful products in the state,” Hussaini added.

In response, Commandant Maku reaffirmed NSCDC’s commitment to working with SON to ensure consumer protection.

The renewed partnership will drive more aggressive enforcement operations and consumer awareness campaigns, ensuring that only standardised and certified products reach Anambra’s markets.

The move comes amid a broader nationwide effort to eliminate counterfeit goods. The agency also shut down illegal drug hubs in Abia and Lagos, sealing over 3,000 shops in Idumota’s Open Drug Market, where it discovered vaccines stored in hazardous conditions.

The inaugural freight service, announced by CCECC’s representative in Nigeria, John Zhao, via his official X account, introduced a seamless crossborder rail transport model. The first cargo train departed from the Ajuba Bonded Terminal, transported goods to Apapa Port in Lagos, and returned with import containers, establishing a fully integrated logistics cycle for

import and export operations.

CCECC’s launch follows the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s (NRC) recent approval of a three-year operational license, making it the first company to receive authorization for standard-gauge rail freight services in Nigeria. The license, effective from October 14, 2024, to October 13, 2027, allows

CCECC to operate freight services along the critical LagosIbadan rail corridor.

Constructed by CCECC and officially launched in June 2021, the 157-kilometre Lagos-Ibadan Railway, with an additional 7-kilometre branch line, supports speeds of up to 150 kilometres per hour. It provides a crucial link between Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, and Ibadan, a key industrial city. Since its inception, the railway has transported over 2 million passengers and facilitated extensive freight movement.

The launch of CCECC’s cargo freight service aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance rail logistics in Nigeria. In February 2025, NRC and APM Terminals Apapa resumed the ApapaIbadan standard-gauge freight rail service, operating on a fixed schedule.

This development further strengthens Nigeria’s rail transport network, improving efficiency and reducing pressure on road infrastructure.

‘The Profit of Purpose’ launches in Lagos to empower social entrepreneurs

STORIES BY TEMITOPE ADEBAYO

In a transformative stride towards financial sustainability within the social impact sector, the highly anticipated book, The Profit of Purpose: Mastering Financial Accounting and Reporting for Social Entrepreneurs, has been officially launched.

This highly anticipated publication aims to equip change makers with the crucial financial acumen necessary to thrive.

The launch event, which held on March 27 at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together an impressive assembly of thought leaders, finance experts, and social entrepreneurs, sparking an engaging dialogue on the future of financial management in mission-driven organizations.

Delivering the keynote speech, Adenike Adeyemi, Executive Director of FATE Foundation, emphasized the critical role of sound financial management in ensuring the long-term success of mission-driven organizations. “Non-profit sustainability is paramount,” she stated, highlighting the importance of financial literacy in achieving lasting impact.

The official unveiling and launch of the book was led by Adebola Williams, CEO of AW Network and Dr Orode Doherty, CEO Ingress Health Partners, who commended the authors for providing practical insights tailored to the unique financial challenges faced by social enterprises.

Reflecting on the book’s purpose, Bukonla Adebakin, The Author, stated, “Financial literacy is the backbone of any sustainable impact. For too long, social entrepreneurs have struggled with the complexity of financial management, often at the cost of their mission.

This book is my contribution to demystifying those challenges, providing a practical roadmap that enables change makers to focus on what truly matters—driving meaningful and lasting change.”

Addressing some of the most pressing concerns for non-profits and mission-driven enterprises, The Profit of Purpose – Mastering Financial Accounting and Reporting for Social Entrepreneurs, equips social entrepreneurs with financial literacy skills to sustain and scale their impact. The book’s seven chapters provide actionable strategies for fundraising, financial management, budgeting, tax compliance, and accountability. It also includes cheat sheets, FAQs, and exercises designed to reinforce learning.

Responding to media question on taxation,

she explained, “One of the key issues addressed in the book is taxation, particularly in regions like Nigeria and Asia, where many businesses remain unregistered. The book stresses that formal registration is vital for sustainability, allowing organisations to access donor funding and operate legally.”

Adebakin, who is a multifaceted professional with over ten years of experience at the intersection of media, technology, and development, combining expertise in social impact initiatives, financial management, and strategic organisational growth, also warned that failing to audit financial accounts could lead to double taxation, as tax authorities may make assumptions about an organisation’s earnings. “When you don’t submit financial reports, you set yourself up for trouble,” she said.

With seven chapters covering essential

financial principles, the book, titled: The Profit of Purpose: Mastering Financial Accounting and Reporting for Social Entrepreneurs, according to the author is designed for both finance professionals and non-finance individuals, including project managers and executive directors.

“This book will help you understand financial statements and make informed decisions. It is a must-have for any social entrepreneur,” Adebakin concluded.

The launch event featured a high-level panel discussion on Impact Investing: Beyond Donations – Sustainable Revenue Strategies for Non-Profits, where experts explored innovative funding models that go beyond traditional grants and philanthropy. Among the distinguished attendees were Josephine Nzerem, Regional Director, West Africa, Ashoka, Chude Jideonwo, Executive

Director of Joy Inc.; Chidi Koldsweat, COO FundsforNGOs; James Ogo Oluwa, Area General Manager of RGCNL; Maryam Decoco, Head of Finance at Baobab+ and contributing author of the book, Ugochukwu Nwosu, Head Program and Grants, ACT Foundation, and Imoh Eboh, Actress. Following the panel, attendees engaged in an exclusive book signing session with the author, further deepening conversations on financial management strategies tailored for social enterprises.

The Profit of Purpose arrives at a crucial time when social enterprises face mounting financial complexities. By bridging the knowledge gap in financial accounting and reporting, the book empowers change makers with the confidence to navigate funding, compliance, and sustainability challenges.

How Benue State University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology will transform education and agriculture

The establishment of the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology (BSUAST), Ihugh, is a landmark achievement that reflects visionary leadership, collaborative governance, and a strong commitment to reshaping Nigeria’s educational and agricultural landscapes.

Located in Benue State’s Vandeikya Local Government Area, the institution embodies a bold initiative aimed at addressing urgent challenges, promoting innovation, and redefining academia’s role in fostering sustainable development.

BSUAST is not just a university; it represents a dynamic force for community empowerment, scientific advancement, and positioning Benue State as a global leader in agricultural excellence.

At the helm of this transformative project is Governor Hyacinth Alia, whose administration has embraced BSUAST as a cornerstone of its development agenda.

Acknowledging Benue’s reputation as Nigeria’s “Food Basket,” Governor Alia envisioned an institution that would modernize agricultural practices, bridge the gap between theory and practical application, and equip future generations with essential skills to confront 21st-century challenges. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping the university’s mission, securing stakeholder support, and ensuring that its establishment aligns with broader national goals of economic diversification and food security.

The legislative arm of Benue State’s government also played a crucial role in actualizing BSUAST.

Under the leadership of Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh, the Benue State House of Assembly expedited the bill to establish the university, showcasing bipartisan support for this initiative. Lawmakers such as Douglas Akya and Saater Tiseer were vocal proponents, emphasizing the institution’s potential to generate employment, stimulate rural development, and position Benue as a center for agricultural research. Their efforts highlighted the urgency of addressing systemic shortcomings in Nigeria’s educational system, where specialized institutions are vital for fostering innovation and addressing sector-specific challenges.

The path to BSUAST’s creation was not without obstacles. Critics raised doubts about the feasibility of establishing a new university in a region already home to institutions like the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (formerly the University of Agriculture, Makurdi). However, Governor Alia and his team countered these concerns by emphasizing BSUAST’s unique focus on applied research, technology integration, and community-driven solutions. They argued that the university would complement existing institutions rather than compete with them, creating a robust ecosystem of specialized education tailored to Benue’s agricultural and economic needs.

Strategically located in Ihugh, BSUAST’s site choice is both symbolic and practical. The region’s fertile land and proximity to agricultural hubs provide an ideal environment for hands-on learning and research. Students will engage in fieldwork, collaborate with local farmers, and develop solutions to challenges such as soil degradation, irrigation management, and crop diversification.

This immersive approach ensures that graduates are not only academically prepared but also grounded in the realities of rural development.

The university’s curriculum is crafted to address Nigeria’s most pressing challenges. Programs in agricultural science, biotechnology, renewable energy, and agribusiness will equip students with the tools to innovate and adapt to evolving global demands.

Professor Qrissturberg Amua, a seasoned academic and a leading promoter of the BSUAST spoke to the Daily Times last week in Makurdi said, “by integrating cutting-edge technologies like precision farming and climate-smart agriculture, BSUAST aims to revolutionize Benue’s agricultural sector, ensuring higher yields, reduced waste, and sustainable practices”.

“Beyond academics, BSUAST is poised to serve as an economic catalyst. The institution will generate direct and indirect job opportunities, from faculty positions to roles in allied sectors such as agro-processing and technology. Its emphasis on entrepreneurship will empower graduates to launch startups, partner with local communities, and contribute to poverty alleviation. Governor Alia has underscored that BSUAST will act as a springboard for Benue’s youth, equipping them with skills to thrive in a competitive global economy”.

The impact of BSUAST will extend far beyond Benue State. Nigeria faces mounting pressures, including population growth, climate change, and food insecurity. By advancing research in diseaseresistant crops, efficient irrigation systems, and sustainable land use, the university will play

a crucial role in ensuring the resilience of the nation’s agricultural sector. Its focus on science and technology also positions it to tackle broader challenges, such as renewable energy adoption and environmental conservation, fostering a greener future for generations to come.

Internationally, BSUAST is set to become a model for African institutions. Its specialized curriculum and collaborative ethos invite partnerships with global universities, research centers, and organizations. By sharing knowledge and best practices, the university can inspire similar initiatives across the continent, reinforcing Africa’s role as a leader in agricultural innovation.

Critics may question the feasibility of such an ambitious project, but BSUAST’s foundation is built on foresight. The institution’s leadership is dedicated to transparency, accountability, and community involvement, ensuring that its growth remains inclusive and sustainable. “Challenges related to infrastructure development and funding are being proactively addressed through strategic planning and stakeholder engagement”, Amua said. In essence, BSUAST stands as a powerful testament to visionary leadership and collective action. It embodies Nigeria’s potential to reimagine education, agriculture, and technology as interconnected pillars of progress. By nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and empowering communities, this institution promises to leave an indelible mark on Benue State, Nigeria, and the world. As the nation navigates the complexities of the 21st century, BSUAST is prepared to lead the charge toward a brighter, more sustainable future.

Spider-Man, Harry Potter producers hired for new 007 film

The producers behind the “SpiderMan” and “Harry Potter” film franchises will oversee the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios announced Tuesday.

The appointment of Amy Pascal and David Heyman is the first step in Amazon’s plan to relaunch the British spy franchise, after taking full creative control last month.

The producers are expected to play a major role in deciding who will replace actor Daniel Craig as the super-suave MI6 agent, as well as choosing the next film’s director and production schedule.

Amazon MGM Studios film chief

Courtenay Valenti said the pair would “deliver to global audiences storytelling that upholds the impeccable legacy of this beloved character.”

Pascal, who previously ran major Hollywood studio Sony Pictures, is bestknown for her work on various “SpiderMan” films, including the recent liveaction movies starring Tom Holland.

She is no stranger to the Bond franchise.

During her tenure, Sony Pictures released 007 films “Casino Royale,” “Quantum of Solace” and “Skyfall.”

Heyman, who is British, produced all eight film adaptations of J.K Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books.

His other credits include “Gravity,” “Barbie,” and the “Paddington” films.

David Oyelowo Hosts Creative Arts Summit in Nigeria to Empower Young Women

The announcement will only fuel the swirling speculation about who will next play James Bond, one of the most famous characters in the history of cinema.

Craig’s final outing, “No Time to Die” — the 25th James Bond film — was released in 2021 and earned $775 million.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Cavill and Theo James are among those currently considered frontrunners.

In 2022, Amazon bought storied Hollywood studio MGM, which held distribution rights to Bond’s extensive back catalog.

But it was not until last month that the company struck a deal with longtime

Bond producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, to obtain full creative control. The deal was closed Monday.

The franchise had been closely guarded by the Broccoli family since 1962’s “Dr. No.” They famously insisted on preserving the integrity of the Bond character and brand, resisting spin-offs and licensing that many industry experts expect to see following Amazon’s takeover.

“James Bond is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema,” Pascal and Heyman said in a joint statement.

Barcelona to Osasuna: Inigo Martinez appeal ‘has no viability’

Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga on Thursday has been somewhat overshadowed by their opponents’ decision to launch an appeal, claiming Inigo Martinez was ineligible to play in the match.

Martinez was back in action after pulling out of Spain duty with a knee injury. Osasuna

felt he should not have played because the game came less than five days after Spain’s last game against the Netherlands which is against FIFA rules.

Former Barcelona presidential candidate and vice-president Toni Freixa, who is also an expert in sports law, has shared his thoughts and thinks there’s no case to answer.

“Osasuna’s challenge has no viability because the Spanish Federation called up Iñigo Martínez, took out a note and even called up another player,” he told Sport.

“Therefore, Inigo Martínez was no longer called up at the time he claimed an injury and the Federation accepted it.

Real Madrid Receives Injury Boost Ahead of Arsenal Clash

Real Madrid could have two players back from injury for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Arsenal. Manager Carlo

Ancelotti expressed optimism about their availability for the crucial match.

“The five famous days cannot be counted from the last match of the Spanish national team because Inigo was not called up for these two Nations League matches.”

Barcelona are also said to have been well aware of the rule and took legal advice before the game, with Hansi Flick then given the OK to field Martinez in the match.

Simeone put Julian Alvarez and Rodrigo de Paul on the bench after they featured in midweek for Argentina against Brazil in South American World Cup qualifying.

Uruguay international Jose Gimenez also began on the bench but he was needed to replace Robin Le Normand midway through the first half after a clash of heads.

Espanyol, battling relegation and provisionally 15th, fought gamely against an Atletico side that played within themselves.

Griezmann’s cross was cleared to the edge of the box.

Conor Gallagher came close before the break and Alexander Sorloth dragged a shot wide of the post as Atletico sought a second.

Espanyol had created little danger but found a way back level when Clement Lenglet blatantly pulled Leandro Cabrera’s shirt in the box.

Puado rammed the resulting penalty into the top corner past Jan Oblak’s outstretched arm after 71 minutes.

Marcos Llorente had a goal disallowed early on for offside but Atletico failed to create further chances until Azpilicueta blasted the visitors ahead from distance.

After Barca beat Atletico 4-2 in their previous top flight outing, before the international break, Diego Simeone’s side knew they could not afford to lose further

Javi Puado earned the Catalan side a point with a penalty after Cesar Azpilicueta put the visitors ahead, leaving the Rojiblancos six points behind league leaders Barcelona despite having played an extra match. Barcelona host Girona on Sunday in a Catalan derby, while Real Madrid, second and three points ahead of Atletico, welcome Leganes later Saturday.

It was his first goal for three years and also his first for Atletico Madrid, but it was worth the wait as he hit a sumptuous volley into the top corner after Antoine

Alvarez, on from the bench, hit the sidenetting as the clock ran down on Atletico’s ambitions, with Joan Garcia saving from a Griezmann header at the death.

Eliminated from the Champions League by rivals Real Madrid, Simeone’s side’s last realistic hope of silverware is in the Copa del Rey, where they face Barcelona in the semi-final second leg on Wednesday.

Chronicling Constituents’ Failed Attempts To Recall Representatives: The Natasha Conundrum

Why We Can’t Fix Nigerian Roads With N800b,- Umahi

The lessons from past recall failures indicate that the process will likely face the same fate as others before it. While her detractors may gather signatures, it remains to be seen if the threshold for recall will be met and if the process will be free from political interference. If history is anything to go by, the recall will likely fizzle out in the face of legal and political obstacles.

Global labour mar ket faces stagnation

Nigeria’s democratic experiment since 1999 has been riddled with inconsistencies, manipulations, and outright subversion of the people’s will. One of the constitutional tools that have suffered significant frustration is the recall process of elected legislators. Enshrined in Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution, the recall mechanism was designed to empower constituents to remove non-performing lawmakers. However, history has shown that while this process exists on paper, its practical application has been anything but successful.

Military will defeat insurgency, says partners - ministry

With the ongoing recall attempt against Senator Natasha AkpotiUduaghan, it is crucial to examine the history of failed recall efforts in Nigeria, the systemic bottlenecks, and the potential implications of the latest move against the Kogi Central lawmaker.

woeful turnout of about 5.3% of registered voters, well below the constitutional threshold required for a recall. The process, rather than being a reflection of the people’s will, became an avenue for political grandstanding, rendering the recall mechanism effectively impotent.

Budget defense: ministries, agencies make 2025 projection

Without a doubt, Nigeria’s political paths since 1999 is replete with the footprints of futile recall attempts. Since 1999, there have been multiple attempts by constituents to recall their representatives, but none has succeeded. Political analysts argue that Nigeria’s political class has deliberately ensured that the recall process is practically impossible to achieve, weaponizing institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to frustrate legitimate recall efforts.

For instance, the most high-profile recall attempt in Nigeria’s democratic history was the move against Senator Dino Melaye in 2017. His constituents, reportedly aggrieved by his controversial conduct and alleged lack of representation, initiated the recall process. The exercise quickly became a battleground for political forces, with the state government playing a visible role in mobilizing against Melaye.

Despite INEC verifying over 188,000 signatures from his constituency, the recall process collapsed under legal gymnastics, delays, and alleged manipulation. The signature verification exercise recorded a

In a similar vein, in 2016, some constituents of Borno South attempted to recall Senator Ali Ndume, citing poor representation and insensitivity to their plight. The effort, however, did not even advance beyond the initial petition stage, as it was heavily resisted by political forces loyal to the senator. The recall attempt eventually fizzled out without any substantial traction, once again demonstrating the structural weakness of Nigeria’s recall system.

Similarly, in 2012, some constituents in Anambra Central reportedly attempted to recall Senator Chris Ngige, but the effort crumbled as allegations emerged that the petitioners were being intimidated and coerced into withdrawing their support for the recall.

At this juncture, it is expedient to ask, “Why do recalls fail in Nigeria?” The consistent failure of recall processes in Nigeria can be attributed to a combination of legal, institutional, and political factors:

Reps demand accurate support from partners, ministry

Senator Natasha commends NNPCL for establishing plants in Kogi

Also in a similar vein, the recall attempt against Senator Jubril Aminu in 2005 was one of the earliest tests of the recall process in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. Some of his constituents accused him of being disconnected from grassroots issues and initiated the process to remove him. However, it ended in futility, as the petition failed to meet INEC’s requirements due to alleged intimidation and vote suppression.

Beyond these high-profile cases, there have been multiple recall efforts against state and federal lawmakers, including former House of Representatives members like Farouk Lawan and Abdulmumin Jibrin. Each attempt faced insurmountable challenges ranging from the coercion of petitioners, political interference, judicial delays, and voter apathy.

In 2018, constituents in Kaduna attempted to recall Honourable Garba Datti Mohammed, citing neglect and lack of accountability. However, the recall effort never materialized beyond media discussions, as political heavyweights in the state quickly shut it down.

First is unrealistic signature requirement. This is as constitutional provision that mandates a recall petition be signed by at least 50% of registered voters in the affected constituency is an uphill task in a country where voter turnout in elections rarely exceeds 40%.

In a similar vein, is INEC’s role in verification exercise. INEC, the electoral umpire responsible for verifying signatures, has often been accused of playing a biased role. The verification process is cumbersome and susceptible to manipulation, as was evident in Dino Melaye’s case.

Also in a similar vein is political interference. This is as political godfathers and state actors often intervene in recall processes to protect their loyalists. In many cases, state governments deploy resources to frustrate recall attempts, as seen in Kogi State under Governor Yahaya Bello’s tenure.

Still in a similar vein is that of security agencies being used as political tools. In fact, the police and other security agencies have been accused of intimidating petitioners and suppressing protests in favor of recall attempts. This discourages constituents from fully engaging in the process.

Another factor borders on judicial delays. The foregoing factor cannot

be farfetched as the Nigerian judicial system is notorious for its slow pace so much that politicians facing recall often rush to the courts, obtaining injunctions that stall the process indefinitely.

Again is that of voter apathy and manipulation. Even when recall attempts gain traction, voter turnout during signature verification and the actual recall referendum remains abysmally low, making it easy for the process to fail.

Against the foregoing backdrop, it is germane to ask, “Is Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recall another political charade?

The reason for the foregoing question cannot be incredible as the latest recall attempt targeting Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan follows a familiar script. AkpotiUduaghan, a vocal and independentminded senator representing Kogi Central, has been a thorn in the flesh of entrenched political interests in Kogi State. The recall initiative against her, rather than being a spontaneous expression of the people’s will, appears orchestrated by powerful interests seeking to silence her.

At this juncture, it is expedient to opine that the recall process in Nigeria, though a constitutional provision, has been reduced to a mere theoretical concept.

Since 1999, every recall attempt has failed, not necessarily due to a lack of public will but because of systemic manipulations and political subterfuge. The ongoing recall attempt against Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan must be viewed with skepticism, as it bears all the hallmarks of politically motivated recalls in the past. If Nigeria’s democracy is to mature, the recall mechanism must be reformed to truly reflect the people’s will rather than serve as a political weapon wielded by the powerful against their adversaries.
