head of government and the office of president as head of state and to provide for a framework for the mode of election to the said offices, passed second reading Thursday It is among 32 constitution amendment bills that scaled second reading in the House of Representatives on the day.

FG Leverages Stockholm Junior Water Prize to Drive Youth-Led Climate Innovation

As Nigeria grapples with the escalating challenges of climate change and water resource management, the Federal Government has thrown its weight behind the 2025 Stockholm Junior Water Prize, seeing it as a critical platform to nurture youth-driven solutions for sustainable water use.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), emphasized that the competition is not just about rewarding innovation but also about fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among Nigerian youth.

“With climate change threatening water security across Africa, this initiative is timely.

We must prepare the younger generation to tackle water-related challenges through innovation and

research. The Stockholm Junior Water Prize provides a launchpad for Nigerian students to engage in global discussions on water conservation, pollution control, and climate adaptation,” Hadejia said.

The competition, open to students aged 15 to 20, aims to instill a deep understanding of water management at an early age. Nigeria’s participation aligns with the government’s broader climate adaptation strategy, which includes enhancing environmental education and supporting scientific research at secondary and tertiary levels.

Fredrik Åhsberg, Head of Political and Trade Affairs at the Swedish Embassy in Abuja, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the international competition— spanning nearly 35 countries— has a track record of inspiring young scientists to develop groundbreaking solutions for global

water challenges.

According to the National Coordinator of the Nigeria Stockholm Junior Water Prize, Mr. Ikechukwu Chinemerem, the competition will also bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world environmental problem-solving. “This is more than a contest; it’s an opportunity for students to think critically about water issues, propose sustainable solutions, and contribute to Nigeria’s climate resilience efforts,” he said.

Nigeria’s Digital Trade Leadership and Global Appeal

While boosting climate adaptation efforts, Nigeria is simultaneously leading Africa’s digital trade transformation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). At the World Trade Organization (WTO) Aid for Trade Session in Geneva, the Special Assistant to the President on Export Expansion, Aliyu Bunu Sheriff,

underscored Nigeria’s ambition to become a regional hub for digital commerce.

“Nigeria recognizes digital trade as an essential driver of economic diversification. Through policy reforms and infrastructure development, we are positioning ourselves as a key player in Africa’s $4.3 trillion AfCFTA market,” Sheriff stated.

He urged the WTO, development agencies, and the private sector to invest in broadband expansion, cross-border payment systems, and capacity-building initiatives for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). According to him, collaborations in these areas will facilitate seamless intra-African trade and accelerate economic growth.

Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s digital trade initiatives, engaging with the AfCFTA Secretariat to

Tariff Hike: Court delivers judgment in MultiChoice suit against FCCPC May 8

Andrew Orolua, Abuja.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, fixed May 8 for judgment in a suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited against the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over tariff hike ..

MultiChoice is seeking to stop the FCCPC from sanctioning it over its recent increase in the DStv and Gotv subscription.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after counsel for the MultiChoice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, and FCCPC’s lawyer, Prof. J.E.O. Abugu, SAN, adopted their processes and presented their arguments for and against the suit.

Justice Omotosho had, on March 12, restrained FCCPC from sanctioning the pay-Tv company until the hearing and determination of the substance suit.

The judge gave the order after an ex-parte motion marked: FHC/ ABJ/CS/379/2025 and moved by Onigbanjo to the effect.

The FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd to provide explanations regarding the March 1 price review of its packages.

The commission directed the company’s chief executive officer to appear for an

investigative hearing on Feb. 27, raising concerns over frequent price hikes, potential market dominance abuse and anticompetitive practices within the pay-TV industry.

The FCCPC also issued a stern warning, stating that failure to justify the price adjustment or comply with fair market principles would lead to regulatory sanctions.

However in the ex parte motion filed by MultiChoice’s legal team led by Onigbanjo, the company sought an order of interim injunction restraining the FCCPC and its officers from carrying out the threat against it, as communicated via a letter dated March 3, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.

It also sought an order restraining the commission and its officers from issuing any further directive or taking any steps capable of disrupting its business activities, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.

“An order of interim injunction restraining the FCCPC, its agents, servants, or privies from sanctioning or penalising MultiChoice (the applicant) in any manner whatsoever in relation to its price increase pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.”

Seat Reservation Bill: To empower would take rightful place in corridors of power - Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep Benjamin Okezie Kalu has called for support for Seat Reservation In Parliament Bill, saying it will empower women to take their rightful place in the corridors of power.

Kalu made the submission while speaking at a dinner banquet, organized in his honour by the Osasu Show Foundation, TOS Foundation, United Nations, UN, Women, and Policy Innovation Center, PIC, in Abuja.

The dinner which also featured an award was essentially, to encourage and appreciate the Deputy Speaker for championing cause of women, through legislative interventions.

Kalu said: “In the spirit of Beijing Declaration, we are here to reaffirm our commitment to not just acknowledging, but actively transforming the systems that perpetuate inequality. This commitment is echoed in the Seat Reservation for Women Bill, HB1349, which I proudly sponsored.

“This legislation seeks to alter the longstanding narrative of exclusion and underrepresentation that has marred our political landscape.

“By reserving seats for women in the National and State Assemblies, we aim to dismantle systemic barriers, and create a legislature that truly mirrors the rich diversity of our nation.

Let me be clear: this is not about charity, it is about justice, strategy, and national prosperity.

“The rationale behind the Seat Reservation for Women Bill is rooted in the understanding that a representative Government must reflect the people it serves.

“Historically, women have been marginalized in our political process, their voices subdued and potentials, untapped. This

Bill is a strategic intervention, designed to correct that imbalance.

“It seeks to empower women to take their rightful place in the corridors of power, where decisions that shape our nation are made. The Bill challenges the status quo, by asserting that the inclusion of women is not a favor, it is an imperative for achieving comprehensive and sustainable national development.”

Kalu further noted that the piece of legislation stands as a beacon of collective belief in the transformative power of women’s leadership, adding that when women participate fully in governance, societies flourish.

“Their perspectives, often shaped by lives experiences and an innate resilience, contribute to more equitable and holistic

policymaking.

“This is why, as we celebrate tonight, we also look forward with unwavering hope to the day when our legislative bodies are a true reflection of our society, a society where every woman, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to lead and inspire,” he said.

Acknowledging various challenges, the Deputy Speaker however stated that he will not relent on the pursuit of the noble cause.

“In embracing these ideals, we also acknowledge that our journey is far from over. The path toward gender equality is fraught with challenges, but it is also rich with opportunities.

“We must continue to dismantle the systemic barriers that impede progress, to foster

environments where every individual can thrive, and to build institutions that are both inclusive and responsive to the needs of our people.

“We stand on the shoulders of giants, drawing inspiration from the Beijing Declaration, which has transformed the women’s rights agenda globally.

“It reminds us that legal protection and affirmative action, like the provisions in the Seat Reservation for Women Bill, are not mere tokens but essential instruments in the fight against discrimination.

“They are a testament to our collective refusal to accept the status quo and our determination to reimagine a future where justice prevails,” he added.

Adeyanju commends Tinubu over tax, duties exemption on healthcare products

Ukpono Ukpong

Human right lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for their recent announcement regarding a two-year exemption of import duties and Value Added Tax (VAT) on essential raw materials for healthcare product manufacturing.

This significant decision, enacted through an executive order, aims to alleviate the financial burdens associated with vital medical supplies in Nigeria.

In his statement, Adeyanju expressed gratitude to both President Tinubu and Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for their recognition of the pressing needs within the healthcare manufacturing sector.

The exemption applies to critical items including Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), excipients, reagents, packaging materials, Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs), and Rapid Diagnostic Kits.

“This initiative represents a substantial boost to our healthcare sector, especially in these challenging economic times,” Adeyanju noted.

He emphasized the importance of rigorous monitoring to ensure that only manufacturers recognized by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, along with valid Tax Identification

Numbers (TINs), benefit from these incentives.

Adeyanju urged that the initiative be considered for extension to other vital sectors, arguing that such measures are essential to mitigate the impacts of hyperinflation throughout the country.

“Lowering costs can significantly improve access to healthcare, particularly for individuals in rural communities who often face the harshest economic pressures,” he stated.

In addition to advocating for these exemptions, Adeyanju called on the government to implement more pro-people policies aimed at enhancing healthcare access for all Nigerians.

“The welfare of our citizens must remain a top priority, and strategic initiatives will pave a way for a healthier nation,” he asserted.

Moreover, he stressed the need for collaboration between the NCS and other regulatory agencies to combat the increasing prevalence of counterfeit healthcare products.

Adeyanju highlighted the dire consequences of counterfeit drugs, which have claimed more lives than some health challenges themselves, urging immediate action to address this critical issue.

“Only through the diligent efforts of customs and regulatory bodies can we safeguard the health of our citizens and ensure access to genuine medical supplies,” he concluded.

Wike’s political group set to hold mega rally in Bayelsa, drums support for Tinubu

A grassroot mobilisation group, the New Associates, linked with former governor of Rivers State and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, have concluded plans to hold a mega-rally in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, to drum up support for President Bola Tinubu.

The group stated that the event would also be used to inaugurate the group in Bayelsa and unveil its officials.

According to the organisers, the mega rally, aside from drumming up support for President Tinubu, is also geared toward expressing appreciation and solidarity with Wike.

They noted that Wike has been a good leader who deserves to be celebrated for his honesty, bluntness, and good leadership.

The organisers stated that as Nigeria moves gradually towards the 2027 election, there is a need to mobilise South- South youths to support the President.

They pointed out that the group, which is grassroots-

oriented, was created by Wike to be used as a mobilisation for the President’s re-election.

The organisers added that part of the strategies to be adopted by the group is to showcase projects the President Bola Tinubu government has initiated in the South-south geo-political zone.

One of the organisers and former spokesman of the Ijaw Youth Council, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, disclosed that the group has been activated in Bayelsa to galvanise support for President Tinubu in the rural communities.

He said the goal is to ensure the people of South- South are enlightened on the achievements of the current administration of President Tinubu and support his re-election.

‘’The New Associates is a grassroots-based political movement set in motion by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to mobilise grassroots support across the states of the South- South geo-political zone for the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office come 2027,’’ he said.

300 Houses: I’m worried by massive rainstorm disaster in Ekiti - Oyebanji

Ayodele Adesanmi Ado Ekiti

The Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has lamented increasing spate of rainstorm causing colossal destruction of buildings and electrical facilities in the state and rendering hundreds of citizens homeless as well as throwing them into perpetual darkness.

Oyebanji spoke while inspecting some buildings that were destroyed by rainstorm in Oye, Ayede and Ilupeju Ekiti, in Oye Local Government Area, where over 300 rooftops were blown off, during a stormy downpour that wreaked havocs Tuesday’s evening.

He was accompanied to the towns by the officials of National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA) and Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency ( EKSEMA) Oyebanji, represented by the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, sympathised with the victims, saying the government of Governor Biodun Oyebanji wont abandon them to suffer.

Commenting on the massive disaster, the Governor said he had earlier visited Ipoti, Odo- Owa, Igbemo, Iyin, Ifaki , Ilawe and other affected towns for similar visitations, which heightened the impression that the disaster was becoming a recurrent decimal tormenting the populace.

Oyebanji lamented how the rainstorm had pulled down electricity facilities, with residents

having no hope of power supply in time soon, describing this as a serious impediment to the growth of local economy.

According to him “I am worried with the increasing level.of rainstorm and destruction of buildings in our towns in recent time. Most worrisome to me was the rate at which people were being rendered homeless. I am not happy about this.

“As I always said, let us exercise maintenance culture on our buildings before the start of rainy season. This will go a long way in preventing our buildings from being affected, because when you change the old planks and corrugated sheets, this will help in resisting the storm.

“Planting of tees around residential areas is also a way of preventing this kind of occurrence. The government has been sensitising the people on this and we expect that they must key into this kind of preventive measures.

“Whatever happens, we are not going to abandon our people to suffer. The government will come for the enumeration of affected buildings and give the needed support where necessary”.

He expressed discontentment over the incidence, the Apeju of Ilupeju Ekiti, Oba David Akingbade, who appreciated the visit, called on government to come to the aid of those affected by the tornado, so that they can rebuild their structures timely.

Tunde Opalana, Abuja

Associates of President Bola Tinubu, including the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo- Olu have been warned to stop campaign of calumny against the person of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar.

Reacting to reports in a section of the media that Babajide Sanwo-Olu through Ms Aisha Achimugu made available to His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, Vice President of Nigeria, 1999-2007 money purportedly belonging to Lagos State, the media

office described such allegation as blatant lies aimed at discrediting the chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement Thursday by Paul Ibe,the Atiku Media Office said the allegation “ is a blatant lie from the pit of hell; a contrived political hogwash, and a futile campaign of calumny aimed at advancing the political interests of President Bola A. Tinubu.

It was noted that “the Waziri of Adamawa does not know Gov. Sanwo-Olu and indeed has never met him before.”

The statement read “this piece of kindergarten propaganda is beneath the camp of Tinubu. How is it possible for an Atiku that does not know and had no connection with Sanwo-Olu to be having a transaction with him involving the exchange of money - let alone during the Presidential election of 2023 in which his boss was a contestant? To what end would that be?

“We wish to, therefore, state emphatically and for the record that it is a political hatchet job aimed at providing a much-needed justification to jettison Governor

Sanwo-Olu, who appears to have fallen out of favour with the “Bourdillon Cult.”

“Indeed, their strategy is two-fold: get rid of Sanwo-Olu and to discredit the coalition being put together by the opposition political leaders, of which Atiku Abubakar is a key stakeholder.

“To even underscore how poor the propaganda is, an unnamed SanwoOlu’s aide is quoted in the news story trashing his principal and adding fuel to the fire. Pray, who does that?.

“Since the EFCC has been dragged into the arena of politics and

propaganda, we challenge the anticorruption agency to make public the outcome of its alleged investigation.

“Finally, it is not just the President that is entitled to that information but the generality of the Nigerian public, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Presidential flag bearer in the 2023 election, Peter Obi.

“This voyage of misadventure and campaign of calumny against the person and reputation of Atiku Abubakar must be halted immediately and with alacrity too.”

Reps move to make provision for run-off in presidential, Gov’ ship elections

The House of Representatives is to alter relevant sections of the constitution to make provision for a run-off in elections to ensure that winners in the presidential and governorship elections score more than half of the total votes cast

This, the lawmakers hope would ensure a more legitimate outcome of election where more popular candidates will emerge in keeping to the democratic norm that the majority wish prevails

Leading debate on the bill titled” a bill for an Act to alter section 134(1) (A), (2)(A), (4)(A) and section 179 (2)(A) (3)(A) of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and for related matters during

plenary on Thursday, a lawmaker, Awaji-Inombek Abiante urged his colleagues to support the bill which he said is to improve the electoral process and ensure good governance

The amendment also seeks to change the system of the simple majority of electing the president and the state governors where there are more than two candidates to ensure the winner score more than half of the total votes cast

The lawmaker appreciated the nation’s 24 years of unbroken democracy, a feat he noted seemed impossible to achieve given the series of political events preceding the advent of the fourth republic

He said the distrust of the populace on the reality of a successful transition of power to

the civilians from the military was so high because the people were tired of several botched transition programmes.

According to Abiante, The distrust displayed by Nigerians who did not give this republic a chance is becoming more palpable and may negatively affect the legitimacy of the country’s elections if efforts are not made to reform the electoral process through purposeful legislations

“Nigeria practices the Presidential system of government, having the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary where enormous powers have been rightly or wrongly appropriated to President and the Governors who portray the big daddy figures in the country and in the states respectively. This makes

the electoral processes leading to their emergence important to ensure proper legitimacy and confidence of the people” he.said

Speaking further, Abiante explained that the present system of first past the post or simple majority is gradually leading to a situation where minority votes are now used to determine who leads the country and states

“The results of the last presidential elections in 2023 revealed a major weakness in our electoral process as the constitution did not envisage so soon, the emergence of a third force and the country was thrown into a kind of democratic cross-roads where for the “first time, the winner of the presidential election did not score

above fifty percent of the total votes cast.

“Records show that out of 23,377,466, the APC candidate scored 8,794,726 representing 36.61% of the total votes cast while the other candidates shared remaining 63.39%. This means that the minority voice is only heard. This is a major disadvantage of the First Past the Post system” he stated

The recent Liberia experience where a run-off election was held to determine the clear winner of the 2023 presidential election because the highest scorer at the first election did not score the majority of the votes or 50+1 was a clear demonstration of allowing the wish of the majority prevail Abiante said is the right path to tow.

NUJ condemns harassment, intimidation of Kano members

Samuel Luka, Bauchi

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has noted with serious concerns, the spectre of disdain and intolerance for journalists and journalism in the country.

The NUJ which stated this in a press statement signed and made available to newsmen by its National Secretary, Achike Chude, decried that such disdain and intolerance were being perpetrated by some members of the elites who feel discomforted and ‘threatened’ by journalists who are simply doing their work.

He said in Kano state, two

journalists have been arrested by the police ostensibly on the orders of the state government.

“The police arrested Buhari Abba, an online publisher, and Ismail Auwal, a freelance journalist, over a report deemed critical to the state’s Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Waiya”, he explained.

The NUJ said Buhari Abba, an Online Editor with Kano Times, was invited by the Kano State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) of the Kano Police Command, where he was detained for hours.

“It appears that those who are constantly traducing, harrassing and

intimidating journalists simply do not get it. Journalists do not have any duty or obligation to love those they are supposed to hold accountable”, the National Secretary noted.

He further explained that the practice of journalism does not impose an adversarial garb on the journalist that puts him in direct confrontation with state or nonstate actors.

“He or she is not a natural enemy of government and her officials. In the exercise of the profession, the duty of the conscientious journalist is to be guided by principles and the ethics therein incorporated”, the NUJ disclosed.

It further stressed that beyond filing reports and stories, the journalist is expected to have opinions and to express such opinions as he or she sees fit.

“Buhari Abba and Ismail Auwal have done nothing wrong to warrant the harassment they have gotten at the hands of the police authorities in the state. It is shameful that the Nigeria Police continues to allow itself to be dragged in the mud anytime some government officials are unhappy with journalists doing their job”, the NUJ added.

“We have often made the claim that no government can win an all out war against the media, neither

do we want one. All we want is to be left alone to do our job in line with the provision of the constitution for the betterment of our country”, the press release demanded.

While stating that intimidation and harassments will not work and have never worked, the NUJ expressed willingness to call its members who stray outside the tenets of the profession to order.

“We expect others at the federal, state, and local government levels to do the same. Stop the Intimidation”, the press release concluded.

The statement, released yesterday, called on Mrs. Ezekwesili to apologize for her remarks, which they characterized as a

public insult to the senator.

“Senator Nwebonyi has empowered countless individuals in our community through his initiatives in agriculture, human capital development, and overall empowerment programs,” Njoku stated.

Wike, who gave the assurance during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Abuja, emphasized that the completion of these initiatives would significantly enhance the capital city’s infrastructure. He also underscored the importance of a maintenance culture to sustain public facilities.

During the tour, which covered the ICC, Gishiri-Katampe Interchange, and Jahi District roads, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.

He credited President Tinubu’s support for driving infrastructure development in the FCT and assured that all projects would be completed without delays.

He commended contractors for their cooperation and assured that the necessary demolitions had been carried out to facilitate road construction.

“I have never been disappointed in my life, and I don’t see failure. I welcome challenges, and I believe that’s what we are here for is to tackle and overcome them. So, for now, we don’t foresee any obstacles.

“We are here at this interchange. This is called Gishiri. Behind us, you go to Maitama. The companies in Gishiri have been cooperative, and the necessary demolitions have been carried out to facilitate the road construction being handled by Gilmore,” Wike said.

Providing an update on budget and funding on the FCT’s fiscal plans, the Minister stated that the

operation arrested Douglas Henry at Agwan Sariki Tachira in Kaura LGA of the State. The arrested suspects are in custody undergoing further interrogation”, Zhakom said.

The Task Force boasted that criminals cannot hide forever as troops will work 24 hours to ensure that the area under its control is free from crime.

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, met with Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss the security and economic situation in the Sahel region, emphasizing ongoing diplomatic efforts with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Mahama, who also serves as the ECOWAS Chairman, stated that his visit was to thank President Tinubu for the support during his inauguration and to update him on his recent engagements with the Sahelian nations. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, emphasizing the need for continuous dialogue to foster regional stability.

“It’s not as easy as we think,” Mahama said. “We just need to continue to dialogue and see how we can work together to

resolve the concerns raised by these countries.”

President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with Mahama’s efforts to maintain engagement between ECOWAS and the

Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. He underscored the importance of security and economic cooperation in ensuring stability for the citizens

of the region.

“I feel good that he is here in the first place. I am indeed very happy with the efforts he has made to build a bridge between the AES countries and ECOWAS,” Tinubu remarked.

“The security situation in the Sahel is a major concern, and we must work towards economic opportunities that ensure the safety and prosperity of our citizens.”

He stressed that ordinary citizens in these countries should be the primary beneficiaries of regional cooperation, not just the leadership.

The meeting underscores ongoing diplomatic efforts to address political and security challenges in the Sahel, as ECOWAS continues to seek solutions amid strained relations with the breakaway AES bloc.

2025 budget had been approved by the FCT Executive Committee and had been submitted for transmission to the National Assembly.

“As of yesterday, I sent our 2025 budget. Mr. President is expected to transmit it today or tomorrow. The 2024 budget will expire in June, and the funds allocated for ongoing projects are still being utilized. However, we anticipate challenges in funding once the 2025 budget is passed,” he explained.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of maintaining public infrastructure, citing the international conference center as a key example.

According to Wike, the government would enter a maintenance contract to ensure the ICC facility remains in optimal condition.

He further stressed the need for an international-standard conference center in Nigeria, acknowledging past challenges in managing public assets.

“One problem we have in our society is a lack of maintenance culture, which is very bad. This time, we are going to have a maintenance contract. Those who rent the facility will generate revenue, which will be used to sustain the company responsible for its upkeep,

“Instead of rushing to build a second conference center, let us first ensure that the one we have is well-maintained,” Wike said.

The FCT Minister also noted that additional work would commence under CGC’s supervision, alongside other projects and assured that by the grace of God, all these roads would be inaugurated in the coming year.

With the ongoing ICC and road projects near completion for commission in May-June 2025, residents anticipate enhanced economic activities, improved urban mobility, significant transformation in Abuja’s road network and public facilities.

Honour Nwosu, SE Senators urge Tinubu

South-East Caucus members in the 10th Senate have implored President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to favourably consider honouring Late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission who conducted the June 12 1993 presidential elections.

Making the call in an interactive session with journalists covering the Senate in the Press Corps Centre Thursday at the National Assembly, the Senators posited that the late professor of political science deserved the immortalization sought because he was a hero.

“We came here (Senate Press Corps Centre) to make a brief statement after the vote that was taken on the floor (of the house) with regards to our motion to immortalize Prof. Humphrey Nwosu. We had three prayers.

“First prayer which was for Senate to recommend to the Executive that given the

fact that Prof. Humphrey Nwosu was the person who actually laid the foundation for the present INEC Headquarters - and commenced the building before that particularly NEC was dissolved by the military in 1993 - we felt that we should recommend that the Executive names that particular building after him,” they revealed.

Speaking through Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the members informed their audience that their second prayer was a post-humous honor for Nwosu which unfortunately had to be turned down by the general house. However, the third prayer centering on a one-minute silence for the departed gentleman was upheld at plenary.

Asked to comment on their next line of action, the Senators charged; “But we are not deterred. The reason is simple. It may be delayed but it may not be denied. Prof. Nwosu was the person who laid the foundation (for the democratic experience) that we are all enjoying today.

“So, as far as we are all concerned, we think that even if this government does not honour Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, a government in future will honour him. After all, some other governments refused recognise Abiola, but later a government recognised Abiola. Other governments didn’t recognise June 12, but later a government recognised June 12 as our democracy day.

“We believe that in the future, a government in the country will make sure that they recognise those who have actually sacrificed and used their everything to make Nigeria a better place. We want to thank those who continue to stand on June 12 and those who sat on June 12 and those who did everything on June 12 - including the government of the day.”

Contributing, Senator Osita Izunaso reminisced that without Prof. Nwosu’s sagacity and courage, the election would not have taken place. He recalled that Justice Ikpeme had earlier said then that the poll would not hold. According to the high-ranking parliamentarian,

it took the audacity of Late Prof. Nwosu to convince the military president, General Babangida that the election process had commenced.

Earlier at plenary, the motion had been rejected by majority of Senators who vehemently opposed it.

Senators Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North), Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South), Titus Zam Benue (North West), Solomon Olamilekan(Ogun West), and Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) argued that, despite Nwosu’s efforts, he failed to deliver the desired outcome to deserve a national honour.

On the other hand, Senators Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Tony Nwoye Anambara (East West), Sampson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South), Ezenwa Onyewuchi (Imo East) and Alwell Onyesoh (River East) contended that Nwosu was a hero who did his best under the challenging conditions of a military regime.

FG threatens diplomatic row with China for ordering Immigration officer’s shooting

Ukpono Ukpong

The Federal Government has vowed to take up a diplomatic confrontation with China following an incident where a Chinese expatriate allegedly ordered the shooting of a Nigerian Immigration officer.

This was revealed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a Stakeholders’ Sensitization Workshop on the Nigeria Visa Policy 2025, in Abuja.

The officer, who was on an official assignment at a Chinese-owned company, was shot by a security official acting on the expatriate’s directive.

Expressing outrage over the incident, describing it as an attack on Nigeria’s sovereignty, Tunji-Ojo warned that such acts of disrespect toward Nigerian security personnel would no longer be tolerated.

He emphasized that Nigeria will demand accountability from those responsible and engage the Chinese Embassy to address the matter.

He stressed that no foreign national or company is above the law, adding that the government will take a firm stance against any threats to national security.

To strengthen immigration oversight, the minister announced plans to automate the classification of foreign nationals into White, Grey, and Black lists, even as he warned that any foreigner found to be a security risk would be swiftly blacklisted and dealt with accordingly.

“One issue I must mention is, some of our companies that refuse, intimidate the Immigration Service from doing its responsibility of supervision. That will no longer happen.

“I will not go to any country, open a company and say Immigration Service cannot come in. No, I won’t do that. An incident happened and I am taking that very personally. I don’t want to mention the company here, that shot one of our immigration

personnel. The owner, the people of the company, foreign company, told the security officer to shoot our officer and he did it. That happened like a couple of weeks ago. I think it is unjust, right? And we are going to take it up with the Chinese Embassy. That is a Chinese company. I won’t go to China and as a Nigerian open a company and tell my security to shoot a government official in uniform. It is never done anywhere in the world. That alone is an attack on Nigeria. It will never happen. It will never happen.

“These officers put their lives on the line. These officers serve this country with their all and you will not come from anywhere and ask them to shoot them in their fatherland. It will no longer happen. We will take it up with you. It will no longer happen. I can’t imagine it. For a father to leave the children, go in defence of Nigeria, to do his legitimate responsibility, go to a company to say, I need to see your expatriates. Let us see your list. Just to ask questions, and the next thing you say, they should lock the gate. Because I am here to do the job. This is it. And the next thing you say, if you don’t do it, I’ll say they should shoot you, and the next thing was that the Nigerian officer was shot. That is a diplomatic issue. We will handle it.

“It will not happen again. So we are going to be very hard. We will not stop your business. We will not overburden your business. But don’t make us inferior in our own land. No, please.

“And we are going to be very tough on this. Because talking to you, I’m not just talking with passion. On this topic, I am talking with a lot of anger, because that guy that was shot is a Nigerian, who we all swore to protect by virtue of the laws of Nigeria, by the Constitution. That guy that was shot, not by a terrorist, is a father. That guy shot who was shot, he is a son to somebody. He is a husband to somebody. That cannot happen anywhere in the world. We will not tolerate it. Please, no agent, no company is above

the law. We are all under, we are all within the law.

“Please, we are doing our best to make things easier. We are doing our best to collaborate with you, but please, we beg you to not insult us. We will not disrespect you. As long as the President is President, nobody will disrespect you in Nigeria.

“But all we ask for is reciprocity of respect. That is not too much to ask for”, he added.

The minister said a Chinese delegation led by the ambassador had earlier met him to complain that they were being blacklisted, but he said Nigeria was not blacklisting China.

“And I say it openly here. China is a major trade partner to Nigeria. And I always say this.

“We will never, under the leadership of His Excellency, we will never paint an entire street with a single brush. There are Nigerians there. There are Chinese people here doing fantastically well in our economy. There are Indians investing billions of dollars in our economy. There are Americans. There are Europeans, and, of course, just like we have a lot of good Nigerians, we have some who are questionable. Same with every nation.

“So, we are not going to paint an entire street with a single brush. All we have said, and I want to repeat this, because we are going to work very hard in terms of our immigration, is that we will not allow for the abuse of our immigration protocols. We will not accept that. And as a matter of fact, by 1st of May, for expatriates in Nigeria and people working in Nigeria, there will be what we call an expatriate administration system, whereby everybody comes into that platform.

“And at the end of the day, we want to be able to know where you are, what you’re doing, and we want to be accountable for everybody in Nigeria. We will be giving a three-month window. I call it an asylum window from the 1st of May till the 1st of August for regularization of immigration protocols in line with

our laws.

“After that, we will move to the era of enforcement, prosecution, and deportation. For anybody who does not. Because we know today a lot of abuses in terms of our immigration policies. But before we act, we want to give you the opportunity to act. Anybody that falls short of that, obviously, has other motives of being in Nigeria. We want you in Nigeria, but to the extent to which you are ready to obey the laws of Nigeria”, he declared.

Earlier, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nana Nandap said as part of the transformation, the Nigerian Visa Policy 2024 underwent a comprehensive review, resulting in a significant reduction in the visa classifications from 79 to 44.

“These categories have been logically grouped to simplify procedures, reduce complexities and greatly improve the user experience. Importantly, we have maintained the original purpose and intent of each visa class throughout this reform. For the first time, with the introduction of e-visa classes, visa applications to Nigeria can now be complete entirely online, from submission to approval, thereby eliminating the need for in-person visits to embassies or consulates.

“Whether you are a tourist, a business traveler, academic or a Nigerian with dual nationality, the process is now simpler, it’s faster and it’s more accessible. This robust e-visa framework includes 13 specific e-visa classes. Before now, the VOA had just two classes, which was just the business visa and the tourist visa.

“But with the e-visa framework, we have 13 specific e-visa classes. These are carefully designed to accommodate a wide range of short-term travel purposes. Applicants can now choose the most appropriate visa based on the nature of their visit”, she stated.

Uzodimma directs overhaul of Imo Varsity administration

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has called for urgent reforms at Imo State University (IMSU) to combat corruption, enhance efficiency, and revamp the Institution’s Operations.

Uzodimma made this known when the Governing Council of IMSU, led by its Chairman, Reverend Father Philip Ogbonna, visited him at the Government House, Owerri.

The governor emphasized the need for a complete overhaul of IMSU’s Administrative processes, particularly through Automation and Computerization.

He stressed that accurate Data Management and System Integrity are crucial to restoring the University’s credibility and efficiency.

“We must ensure that the University

Operates with transparency and accountability. I will not support any measures that drain Government Revenue. Instead, we must embrace sustainable funding models,” the Governor declared.

He urged the University’s Management to develop a comprehensive work plan that identifies and tackles key challenges, particularly in Academics, Administration, and Infrastructure.

According to him, a thorough review of the University’s Curriculum is necessary to produce graduates who are competitive in the Labor Market.

Uzodimma proposed a Businessoriented yet socially responsible Model to manage the University, suggesting that IMSU explore Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to improve funding and service delivery.

He called on the Governing Council to work closely with the School Management

in implementing strategic changes to boost overall institutional performance.

“Let us have a better plan. Let us streamline the Admission process. Why should we admit Students without ensuring they have the resources and opportunities needed to succeed? If Departments are not authorized to admit, why are they doing so? These are the issues we must address,” the Governor stated.

He further highlighted the moral decay within the Institution, stressing the need for ethical leadership and renewed commitment from all stakeholders to rebuild the University’s reputation.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation,

Reverend Father Philip Ogbonna, the Chairman of IMSU’s Governing Council, acknowledged the University’s many challenges and called for swift interventions in Key Areas such as: Accreditation of the College of Medicine

Digital privacy critical in building public trust in digital economy - Official

The Country Director of Accountability Lab Nigeria, Mr Friday Odeh says digital privacy is a critical factor in safeguarding individual’s rights and in building trust in Nigeria’s digital economy.

Odeh made this known on Thursday in Makurdi at a OneDay Digital Rights Roundtable organised for Civil Society Organizations CSOs in Benue state.

He said Nigerians must learn to safeguard their digital information and appreciate the importance of responsible use of the digital space

The country director said that the roundtable was to create foundational understanding and make data protection, digital rights, and data privacy a pressing issue.

He pointed out that despite the enactment of data protection laws, such as the Data Protection Act 2023 and the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation, significant gaps still remain in public awareness and enforcement.

“Many individuals are unaware of their rights, while data administrators and collectors often fail to uphold their responsibilities in safeguarding sensitive information.

“Additionally, breaches of personal data frequently go unreported, leaving individuals vulnerable to exploitation.

“At the grassroots level, data privacy violations have become increasingly prevalent, often occurring without the victims’ awareness.

“So this workshop aims to bridge that gap by equipping CSOs in Benue State with the knowledge and tools to understand the legal frameworks governing data privacy and freedom of expression in Nigeria and advocate for stronger data protection policies and enforcement.

“We also want to ensure

The Federal Government, through the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), is committed to bridging the digital divide and creating opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to fully participate in the digital economy.

President of DBI, David Daser, disclosed this at the graduation ceremony of 24 PWDs in Lagos under the DBI/Sightsavers IT Bridge Academy. He noted that the initiative, in partnership with Sightsavers International, is designed to empower PWDs with digital skills that enhance employability and economic independence.

The DBI President stated that, in addition to the Lagos graduates, 25 other PWDs have also completed their training at the Kano Campus. He further revealed that the Enugu Campus is set to receive Sightsavers to leverage its facilities for the benefit of the Eastern region.

According to him, the 49 graduates underwent an intensive nine-month training programme, acquiring industry-relevant skills, including Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Product Management, Digital Marketing and E-Commerce, as well as Data Analysis and Visualization.

Daser, who was represented by the Group Head of Special Duties at DBI, Viola Askia-Usoro, highlighted the importance of the training, stating that the acquired skills would enable the graduates to compete favourably in the job market and pursue their passions with confidence.

“This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in our journey to empower persons with disabilities (PWDs) with the skills and knowledge required to thrive in the digital economy. This occasion acknowledges the hard work and achievements of our participants; PWDs who have completed their training. It is a testament to their perseverance and determination and a significant milestone and a cause for celebration,” he said.

increase reportage of violations on the Ripoti platform and hold key actors accountable for data privacy breaches.”

While acknowledging the importance of the Nigeria Data Protection Act in protecting the digital space, the Country Director noted that even though the law serves as a strong foundation, it still requires strong implementation and more awareness to be effective.

This, he said, is what the roundtable, which brought together CSOs, relevant government functionaries and media practitioners, seeks to achieve.

Daser described the IT Bridge Academy as a beacon of hope and inclusivity, being the second of its kind in Africa after the Kenyan model, which is also supported by Sightsavers International.

He reiterated DBI’s commitment to ensuring PWDs have equal opportunities to participate in the digital economy.

Despite the progress made, Daser acknowledged the challenges PWDs face, including barriers, stigma, and discrimination that hinder their ability to reach their full potential. He stressed the need for greater collaboration among stakeholders to promote disability inclusion in Nigeria.

“Disability inclusion is a journey that is quite new to the

Nigerian society, therefore, the collaboration of all stakeholders is required to entrench a variety of systems and approaches that would promote disability inclusion in all sectors in Nigeria,” he said.

He commended Sightsavers International for its support in developing the ICT capacitybuilding programme and called on government institutions, private sector organizations, and NGOs to create more opportunities for PWDs.

“To our partners, Sightsavers, we appreciate your unwavering support and commitment to this initiative. Your partnership has enabled us to create a unique and impactful program that is changing lives. To our faculty and staff, I thank you for your tireless efforts in delivering high-quality training and support to our students. Your expertise, patience, and dedication have been invaluable to our graduates,” Daser stated.

The DBI President emphasized that the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes democracy, economic development, and youth empowerment through the tech ecosystem.

“The programme supports this agenda by providing opportunities for youth development, capacity building, and economic growth through the tech ecosystem.

President Tinubu’s administration has emphasized the importance of economic growth and job creation.

The IT Bridge Academy contributes to this goal by providing PWDs with industry-recognized certifications, enhancing their employability and other opportunities,” he added.

He also linked the initiative to the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy’s Strategic Plan (2023–2027), affirming that the DBI is committed to expanding the programme’s impact across Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of Sightsavers, Sunday Isiyaku, emphasized the importance of digital skills in empowering PWDs, stating that disability should never be a barrier to employment or economic independence.

“At Sightsavers, we firmly believe that disability should never be a barrier to employment or economic independence. The IT Bridge Academy was designed to bridge the gap in digital skills and create pathways to meaningful careers for persons with disabilities,” Isiyaku stated.

He further noted that the initiative is not just about education but also about economic empowerment, inclusion, and proving that talent, not disability, should define a person’s opportunities.

Harnessing Benue’s Livestock Potentials For Economic Growth

When Benue State Government hosted its maiden Livestock Summit on March 21, 2025 it was to make a clear statement that it is ready to fully benefit from the massive potentials in the livestock sector. A sector that presently contributes up to $32 billion to Nigeria’s GDP and a potential to reach up to $74 billion by 2035.

Only a visionary leadership, like that of Governor Hyacinth Alia, will grasp the golden opportunity provided by the livestock sector and take the necessary steps to tap from its enormous opportunities. Thus, when the governor quickly set up the Bureau of Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control, it was to seamlessly provide the policy direction through which to play active and beneficial part in the livestock sector of the country.

The Benue Livestock Summit 2025 is therefore a milestone in the state’s collective quest to reposition Nigeria’s livestock industry for economic growth and self-sufficiency.

According to Aondoakaa Asambe, the DirectorGeneral, Bureau of Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control, holding the first-ever livestock summit in the history of the state is a testament to the unwavering commitment to harnessing the vast potentials of the livestock sector and transforming it into a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and food security in the state.

The livestock sector no doubt, is a critical component of Nigeria’s economy, contributing significantly to GDP, employment, trade, agribusiness, and food production, however, as observed by Aondoakaa, some huge challenges, such as limited access to finance and market linkages, inefficiencies in production and processing, lack of reliable data for informed decision-making, inadequate veterinary services and disease control mechanisms, the recurring farmer-herder conflicts arising from competition over land and water resources, and climate change and environmental concerns, must be clinically addressed to attract the desired investment to the sector.

It will not be out of place to say that the summit is one initiative to proffer solutions to these challenges and chart fundamental pathways to full exploitation of the livestock value chain for the benefit of the people of Benue State and Nigeria.

“This summit is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Benue State Government to move beyond rhetoric and take pragmatic steps

toward meaningful reforms in the livestock sector. We recognize that sustainable growth requires collaboration, and that is why we are gathered here today—to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and forge partnerships that will shape the future of livestock production in Benue State and Nigeria,” the director general said.

Indeed, Benue State has made huge investments in the past in the livestock sector, but which have been run down over the years. With the renewed interest in the sector nationally, the state, under the visionary leadership of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has demonstrated a strong commitment to take a huge cut from the national pie.

However, to get the best out of the sector, there must be well harnessed, sound and guided policies, which will transform the fortunes of farmers and citizens. This, the Benue State Government has clearly acknowledged.

According to the governor, the theme of the maiden livestock summit, ‘Re-imagining the Future of Livestock Production in Nigeria for Economic Growth and Self-Sufficiency’, aligns perfectly with the Benue State Development Plan 2025–2034, which is anchored on actionable policies and strategic directions for the state’s economic growth and self-sufficiency.

“Notably, livestock development stands out as a readily available, high-impact opportunity,” Alia said, and added that the Bureau for Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control would serve as a policy hub to advance livestock development, and strategically, position the state to benefit from programmes and initiatives at the Federal level.

To begin with, Benue has 25,500 sq. km of arable land and immense livestock farming potential. It is therefore ready to welcome investors.

The government has also taken the first step by adopting the “Pasture as a Fodder Crop” initiative, which is a strategic move to cultivate improved pasture that can be baled and sold to less-endowed regions with high livestock populations, particularly cattle and other ruminants. This initiative will commence this year.

An upbeat governor Alia believes that “by the time farmers realize they can earn more from sown pasture than from traditional economic crops, Benue will become a hub for ruminant feed production, with potential impacts extending to exports.”

He however said “achieving this requires investments in balers, improved pasture seeds, fencing materials, and modern equipment to ensure Good Agricultural Practices and safeguard

farmlands from encroachment.

Already, the state has identified several facilities ready to be utilised through Public-Private Partnerships to drive the livestock value chain. These, include, the 13,000 hectares Ikyôgen Cattle Ranch and Resort in Kwande LGA, for large-scale cattle ranching and eco-tourism, and the Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre at Raav, in Gwer West LGA, which has 3,200 hectares dedicated to livestock breeding and research, particularly for the Muturu Breed of Cattle.

Other facilities for PPP investments are the 922 hectares Small Ruminant Ranch in Ningev, Vandeikya LGA, suitable for sheep and goat farming, the Benue Swine and Crop Improvement Project at Yandev, Gboko LGA, a key facility for pig breeding and productivity enhancement, the Makurdi International Cattle Market at North Bank, the Artificial Insemination Centre located in Gaadi, Makurdi LGA for genetic improvement of livestock breeds, and the state Agricultural Development Company 6.3 hectares hatchery, feed mill, and breeder stock that could be revived to support poultry farmers across Nigeria.

Benue State also boasts of other facilities related to the livestock sector that needed a little touch of investment to revive. These include the Gaadi Ranch Development Centre in Makurdi LGA, which has up to four hectares for modern ranching and livestock management training. There is also the Live Birds Market at Nyôr Igyungu, Makurdi LGA, the Veterinary Complex in North Bank, Makurdi LGA, which is sitting on 4.8 hectares, but currently in disrepair and needing some touches to provide essential veterinary services, the Pig Demonstration Centre in Katsina-Ala, the Poultry Holding and Demonstration Centre along Gboko-Aliade Road, the Ushongo Pasture Development Area, a designated livestock feeding area requiring urgent rehabilitation, and the Abattoirs and Slaughterhouses across the 23 local government areas of the state.

Even as governor Alia harps on getting investors in those areas through the PPP model, the government’s goal remained to integrate Benue into the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) to bridge existing gaps in livestock infrastructure. This is just as the government extends its net to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the pig industry, given its tremendous value chain potentials and the economic, cultural, and social advantages.

Given its determination to upscale the livestock sector in driving the state’s economic growth, Benue State Government has indicated interest to establish

10 feed mills and 10 hatcheries in each of the three senatorial districts, nine agricultural training centers for extension workers to bridge the extensionfarmer gap, and develop three cattle, sheep, and goat ranches in each district.

The governor in his address at the summit, gave the participants a key challenge. “One of the critical takeaways I expect from this Summit is an articulated roadmap for establishing ranches. The failure to develop model ranches in collaboration with farmers and the private sector has hindered livestock growth. We are poised to close this gap by operationalizing ranches and empowering farmers to expand beyond subsistence backyard livestock rearing.”

The government is also determined to enforce the law against open grazing, and continue to spearhed agitation for a national legislative reforms to prohibit open grazing and promote the establishment of ranches nationwide.

Indeed, the livestock sector, as attested by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Mukhtar Maiha is a huge terrain for wealth and jobs creation, and national economic transformation.

To achieve that however, Nigeria must modernize the sector to expose the economic opportunities in the production and marketing of all farmable animals ranging from the bee to cattle, camels, and donkeys. The several value chains in the sector must be exploited for the benefit of the nation.

The expected transformation in the sector must be driven by several pillars, and embraced by government and the private sector. These include breed improvement, improved health management of the national herd, development of feed and fodder, livestock value chain development, investment and market access.

There should also be innovative solutions that challenge traditional approaches, the strengthening of collaboration between government, the private sector and international partners, the development of concrete action plans to drive sustainable livestock production, and prioritisation of policies that improve the ease of doing business in the livestock sector.

No doubt, a revitalised and modernised livestock sector will address food insecurity, create wealth and vast value-chain opportunities for economic growth, and make Nigeria a key player in the global livestock industry. This is what Benue State is fully aligned to benefit from.

Speaking in Paris during a panel interview with European journalists, Zelensky addressed Moscow’s latest maritime truce proposal, which was announced on Tuesday to allow safe passage for commercial vessels. However,

Russia has stated that the ceasefire would only take effect once Western sanctions on its food and fertilizer exports are lifted.

When asked by the BBC whether he believed the U.S. would resist Russia’s demands, Zelensky responded, “I hope so. God bless, they will. But we’ll see.”

The situation in the Black Sea remains a critical point in the ongoing war, as Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Russia of using

food security as a bargaining chip. Ukraine has also been pushing for alternative export routes to bypass Russian naval threats, particularly after the collapse of the Black Sea grain deal in 2023.

Zelensky’s remarks reflect concerns that any compromise on sanctions could weaken international pressure on Russia, which Kyiv sees as essential to ending the war on its terms.

New York Court Blocks Texas From Suing Doctor Over Abortion Pills, Setting Stage for Supreme Court Battle

A New York state court on Thursday blocked Texas from pursuing legal action against a New York doctor who prescribed and mailed abortion pills to a woman in Texas, marking a major escalation in the ongoing legal battles over abortion rights between states.

The ruling highlights the deep divide between states that ban abortion and those that have enacted protective measures for providers.

Texas, which has a near-total abortion ban, has sought to prosecute out-of-state medical professionals who help women in Texas access abortion care. Meanwhile, New York has a “shield law”

designed to protect doctors who prescribe abortion pills to patients in states where abortion is restricted.

Legal experts say the case is likely to reach the U.S. Supreme Court, where it could set a precedent for how states enforce conflicting laws on abortion.

“This is uncharted legal territory,” said reproductive rights attorney Melissa Murray. “We’re now seeing states directly at odds with each other in ways that challenge the traditional cooperation between state legal systems.”

New York is one of eight states that have passed “telemedicine abortion shield

laws” since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. These laws prevent state officials from cooperating with out-of-state investigations, subpoenas, or extradition requests related to abortion services.

Texas officials, however, argue that their laws should apply beyond state borders when it comes to what they consider illegal abortions. They have vowed to appeal the New York ruling.

The case now stands as a key test of state sovereignty and interstate legal authority, with both sides expecting a drawn-out legal battle that could reshape the future of abortion rights in the U.S.

North Korea Sends 3,000 More Troops to Russia Amid Growing Military Ties

North Korea has reportedly deployed at least 3,000 additional soldiers to Russia in early 2024, further solidifying its support for Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine, South Korea’s military revealed on Thursday.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the reinforcements were sent in January and February, adding to the estimated 11,000 North Korean troops that have already been deployed to assist Russian forces. Of those, around 4,000 have been killed or injured in combat, according to Seoul.

The revelation comes as Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed that preparations are underway for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to visit Russia, as reported by state media outlet TASS.

North Korea’s growing military involvement in Ukraine has raised concerns among Western nations, which have long accused Pyongyang of supplying arms and ammunition to Russia in exchange for economic aid and technological support.

The deployment of troops signals deepening military

cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow at a time when international leaders are intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the three-year conflict. Meanwhile, South Korea and its allies have condemned North Korea’s involvement, warning of further sanctions and consequences for its actions.

With tensions escalating, all eyes are now on Kim Jong Un’s potential visit to Russia and what further agreements may emerge between the two countries in their increasingly close partnership.

N1.92trn subsidy debt, funding gaps push power sector toward crisis

PowerUp Nigeria, a power sector advocacy group, has warned that Nigeria’s power sector is on the brink of a major crisis due to an outstanding government subsidy debt now standing at N1.92 trillion.

According to reports, federal government subsidies to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) reached N1.92 trillion as of last year, while Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) continue to struggle with revenue collection.

Executive Director of PowerUp Nigeria, Adetayo Adegbemle, raised concerns over the Federal Government’s failure to activate the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF) by the first quarter of 2025, calling it a major setback in addressing Nigeria’s electricity liquidity challenges.

Adegbemle warned that delaying the PCAF’s activation is pushing the sector

deeper into financial distress.

“With subsidies soaring to N200 billion monthly and GenCos receiving only 39 per cent of their invoices by December 2024, the sector faces growing instability. However, this does not have to lead to collapse. With adaptive policies, stakeholder collaboration, and accelerated reforms, recovery remains possible,” he said.

“To bridge the PCAF gap, the government must urgently establish an emergency liquidity facility backed by multilateral development partners or sovereign guarantees. This fund could temporarily absorb part of the subsidy burden while fast-tracking PCAF’s operationalisation.

Simultaneously, NERC should mandate DisCos to ring-fence revenue from Band-A customers (who pay higher tariffs) exclusively for settling GenCos’ invoices, ensuring at least 50 per cent payment compliance. These measures would prevent

further erosion of investor confidence and keep gas suppliers engaged.”

A report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its Q4 2024 electricity sector review showed that DisCos remitted only N336.6 billion out of the total N832.6 billion invoice from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET). The DisCos’ Remittance Obligation (DRO) for the quarter stood at N360.9 billion.

The report also revealed that foreign countries supplied with electricity by Nigeria’s power generation companies paid just 37 per cent of the $14.05 million worth of power sent to them.

According to NERC, six international bilateral customers within NESI made a payment of $5.21 million against a cumulative invoice of $14.05 million issued by the Market Operator (MO) for services rendered in Q4 2024.

Customs seizes N1.72bn contraband in one-month crackdown

TEMITOPE ADEBAYO

The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted smuggled goods worth 1.72 billion in a month-long operation across the South-West.

Comptroller Kola Oladeji, the Customs Area Controller of FOU Zone A, made this known on Wednesday during a media briefing in Lagos. He stated that the seizures included 3,832 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice—equivalent to seven truckloads—and 27 units of used (Tokunbo) vehicles.

Other confiscated items were 494 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), amounting to 14,820 litres, 27 bales of used clothing, 95 bags of charcoal, and 3,643kg of Cannabis Sativa. Six suspects were arrested

in connection with the smuggling activities.

Oladeji reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to enforcing the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and ensuring compliance with import and export regulations. He said officers had intensified border surveillance across SouthWestern states to clamp down on economic saboteurs.

“The operatives of FOU A have strengthened intelligence-driven patrols across key smuggling routes. Our Swift Sting Operations have resulted in 82 interceptions within the period under review,” he stated. He commended the relentless efforts of customs officers in securing these seizures, noting that their vigilance and long hours of surveillance played a crucial role in disrupting illicit trade. In addition to the seizures, Oladeji

disclosed that the unit generated 72.4 million from debit notes issued to importers who underpaid customs duties at seaports. He highlighted trade facilitation measures introduced by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi to enhance revenue generation and economic growth.

“These initiatives, including the Time Release Study (TRS), Advance Ruling, and the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) scheme, have bolstered investor confidence and improved customs efficiency,” he said.

Oladeji assured that FOU Zone A would sustain its enforcement drive, intensify public engagement on the dangers of smuggling, and uphold government policies to promote legal trade and economic stability.

World Bank urges Nigeria to invest $15m annually in statistics upgrade

The World Bank has advised Nigeria to invest between $10 million and $15 million annually to enhance its national statistical system and align it with countries like Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, and Colombia.

According to a statement by Mrs. J. I.

Osagie Jacobs, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, this recommendation was made by Mr. Johan Mistiaen, the World Bank Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, during a visit to the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar

Atiku Bagudu.

Mistiaen, who was accompanied by World Bank Country Director Ndiame Diop, presented a report titled “Next-Level Statistics to Support Nigeria’s Reform and Growth Agenda,” highlighting that Nigeria’s statistical performance lags behind its aspirational peers. He noted that consistent

annual funding would strengthen the country’s ability to generate timely, highquality data for economic planning and policy reforms.

Senator Bagudu assured that the Federal Government remains committed to the independence of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and will continue to support its mandate of producing socio-economic data. He praised the NBS for its strong reputation in data collection and analysis, which has been instrumental in economic assessments by international organisations.

Statistician-General of the Federation and CEO of NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, stated that the Bureau had received its highest funding in a decade under the current administration.

He emphasised that increased investment and collaboration with development partners would enable the agency to meet

growing data demands effectively.

The NBS serves as Nigeria’s primary statistical agency, responsible for collecting, compiling, analysing, and disseminating official data on economic, social, demographic, and environmental issues.

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined from 24.48 per cent in January to 23.18 per cent in February, while core inflation, which excludes food and energy, slightly decreased from 22.59 per cent to 23.01 per cent.

The slowdown follows Nigeria’s recent rebasing of its Consumer Price Index (CPI), adjusting the reference base year from 2009 to 2024 to better reflect current consumer spending patterns and economic realities.

The rebasing aims to improve inflation measurement by incorporating newer goods and services, though concerns about data accuracy remain.

The event, held in Lagos is part of FundQuest’s unwavering commitment to fostering economic growth by supporting women entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

In her presentation titled ‘Empowering Female Entrepreneurs in Nigeria’, Ediagbonya referenced Michelle Obama, former First Lady of the United States, who said, ‘no country can ever truly flourish if it stifles the potential of its women and deprives itself of the contributions of half of its citizens.’

She went on to showcase success stories of women-led businesses that have received funding, advisory services, and financial support from FundQuest.

According to her, notably, founder of Dio’s Dlite Greek Yogurt & Treats, Mrs. Adebimpe Osanyintuyi, leveraged FundQuest’s financing to expand her food processing and distribution business.

Similarly, CEO of Veedic Nigeria Limited, Ms. Olubukola Olaigbe, accessed funding for business expansion, enabling her logistics firm to scale significantly.

She underscored the power of networking, strategic partnerships, and focusing on competitive advantages in specialized market niches.

In alignment with these insights, managing director and CEO of FundQuest, Mr. Abiodun Akinjayeju affirmed that FundHER by FundQuest is set to be a longterm commitment to bridging the financing gap for women entrepreneurs.

He stated that, “if you educate a woman, you educate a nation; if you fund a woman’s business, you are funding the economy. Women have consistently demonstrated resilience and business acumen, and FundQuest is fully committed to supporting their entrepreneurial journeys.”

Gross earnings soared by 86 per cent to N3.97 trillion, with interest income alone contributing N2.72 trillion, marking a remarkable 138 per cent year-on-year growth.

Non-interest income also witnessed substantial growth, with net fees and commission income climbing to N206.8 billion, boosted by increased electronic banking transactions, account maintenance charges, and foreign withdrawal fees.

To strengthen its capital base and meet the Central Bank of Nigeria’s new capitalisation

requirements, Zenith Bank successfully raised N350 billion through a rights issue and public offer, which was oversubscribed by 160 per cent.

The capital injection will be strategically deployed to enhance technology infrastructure, boost liquidity, and drive expansion into key African markets.

The bank has also been named Best Bank in Nigeria, Most Sustainable Bank, and Best in Corporate Governance by leading global financial institutions.

NIMASA’S crusade to end war risk insurance premium to save Nigeria over $400 billion annually

War risk insurance (WRI) is an additional surcharge imposed by international shipping companies on cargo bound for Nigeria. It comprises two key components: war risk liability, which covers people and goods aboard the vessel and is calculated based on the indemnity amount, and war risk hull, which covers the vessel itself and is determined by its value. This financial burden was initially introduced during the height of Niger Delta militancy and piracy. Although the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics does not have precise data on the total WRI payments made to international insurers, available figures indicate that Nigeria has paid over $1.5 billion in the past three years alone to Lloyd’s of London, Protection and Indemnity (P&I) insurance, and other foreign insurance firms. The impact on Nigeria’s economy is staggering: for a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) valued at $130 million, the WRI surcharge per voyage is approximately $445,000. For new container vessels valued at $150 million, the cost rises to $525,000 per voyage. Maersk, one of the world’s largest shipping companies, has also introduced a transit disruption surcharge of up to $450 per container, while other shipping lines impose a war risk surcharge of $40–$50 per 20-foot container. Recognizing the severe economic implications of this financial burden, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) under the leadership of Dr. Dayo Mobereola has launched an aggressive campaign to eliminate war risk insurance on Nigeriabound cargo. The NIMASA Act and the Merchant Shipping Act mandate the agency

to promote shipping development, and removing the WRI premium has become a central focus of its maritime reforms. The security concerns that originally justified these premiums no longer exist. Nigeria has not recorded a single piracy incident in over three years, and in 2021, the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) officially removed Nigeria from its list of piracy-prone countries. Over the past five years, NIMASA, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, has led an unprecedented crackdown on piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, earning global recognition from the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Despite these achievements, international shipping companies have continued to impose war risk insurance premiums on Nigeriabound cargoes. In 2023, the International Bargaining Forum (IBF) further validated Nigeria’s progress by delisting the country from the list of high-risk maritime nations. With piracy no longer a concern, why has the international shipping community continued to impose these excessive premiums?

NIGERIA’S EFFORTS TO MITIGATE WRI PREMIUMS To address this issue, Nigeria through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the Ministry of Defense made significant investments in maritime security through initiatives like the Deep Blue Project, which has successfully eliminated piracy in the country’s waters for over 30 consecutive months—a record unmatched anywhere in the world. In addition, Nigeria collaborates closely with the IMO and other international bodies to combat maritime threats, further reducing its risk classification. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has

publicly commended Nigeria’s efforts in securing the Gulf of Guinea. Despite these improvements, shipowners and insurers have refused to acknowledge Nigeria’s new security status, continuing to levy exorbitant premiums on vessels operating in the country.

MOBEREOLA’S INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY: BRINGING GLOBAL ATTENTION TO THE ISSUE Determined to break this cycle of financial exploitation, Dr. Mobereola under the directives of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola took Nigeria’s case to international stakeholders, urging them to support the removal of war risk insurance premiums. In a major diplomatic move, he engaged Chatham House, where he met with Dr. Alex Vines, Director of the Africa Programme, who agreed to escalate the matter to the United Nations. NIMASA has also engaged major global shipping organizations, including: • BIMCO (Baltic and International Maritime Council), the world’s largest shipping association. • The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS). • INTERCARGO (International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners). • INTERTANKO (International Association of Independent Tanker Owners). In discussions with these organizations, Dr. Mobereola emphasized that Nigeria has invested billions in maritime security, yet continues to be unfairly penalized. He urged the global shipping community to recognize the country’s improved security status and remove the unjustified WRI premiums.

Stinne Taiger Ivø, Deputy Secretary General of BIMCO, acknowledged Nigeria’s progress and stated that shipowners should take the lead in pushing for lower

premiums. Similarly, Zhou Xianyong of INTERCARGO assured NIMASA of their support in Nigeria’s campaign to be delisted from war risk insurance premium zones. Reducing these premiums is critical for Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade. Lower shipping costs will Encourage more international trade, Attract foreign investment, and Strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading blue economy player.

Recently, NIMASA met with a Danish delegation led by Kristin Skov-Spilling, Chief Technical Advisor from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urging Denmark to advocate for a reduction in war risk insurance premiums. Some critics argue that Denmark cannot intervene in private insurance matters, but this argument is flawed. Denmark has a significant interest in Maersk Line, which contributes over 15% of the country’s GDP. If Denmark exerts pressure on Maersk, other shipping companies will likely follow suit. Dr. Dayo Mobereola and his Management team at NIMASA have successfully brought global attention to Nigeria’s unfair war risk insurance burden. Now, it is time for all stakeholders—government, industry, and international bodies—to support the removal of this unjustified premium. Nigeria has fulfilled its obligations, securing its waters and eliminating piracy. Yet, foreign insurance firms continue to profit while Nigerian businesses and consumers bear the costs. The message is clear: Nigeria cannot continue paying war risk insurance premiums indefinitely. The time for change is now and lets sustain the momentum.

Atiku accuses Wike of prioritizing 2027 election over fixing Nigeria

Andrew Oota

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for prioritizing the 2027 election as against focusing on pressing challenges facing Nigeria and Nigerians under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration.

An aide to minister Wike, Lere Olayinka, had said his boss would work against Atiku’s 2027 presidential bid, just as he allegedly did in the 2023 election.

Olayinka, who stated this while reacting to Atiku’s statement that he had no regrets for not choosing Wike as his running mate in the in the 2023 election, said that Wike played a decisive role in Atiku’s defeat in 2023.

In a post on X, Olayinka said; Wike would ensure Atiku fails again in 2027. Two years after making the PDP lose a presidential election it could have won, Atiku is giving reasons he did not pick Wike as his running mate and that he has no regrets.

“Someone should tell our serial presidential election contester that Wike also has no regret for ensuring that he failed in the election and will make sure that he fails again and again.”

In his response, Atiku, through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, said that it was sad that instead of Wike focusing on urgent matters of national importance, he is more concerned and focused on 2027 election.

Ibe further described Wike’s focus on the 2027 election as insensitive against the backdrop of the fact that current

administration is struggling to fulfill its promises.

According to Ibe, “Former Vice President Abubakar is currently preoccupied with issues of nation-building than bothering himself about what Wike and others want to think”.

He questioned whether Nigerians were in a better situation now compared to 2023, saying, “The question they should be answering is, are Nigerians better off today than they were in 2023? What is the cost of living today? What was it back in 2023?”.

Rivers APC Chairman says emergency declaration saved anarchy

Tom Okpe, Abuja

Chairman, All Progressives Congress, APC, Rivers State chapter, Tony Okocha has said state of emergency, declared in the State, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saved anarchy, lives and property, saying it was a necessary evil.

He also, congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the declaration of the emergency rule and suspension of Governor Siminilaye Fubara, his Deputy and House of Assembly members, stating that there was no Government in the State before the pronouncement, as the other two arms of Government, the Legislature and Judiciary were not there, to check the Executive.

Okocha made this disclosure, while speaking with journalists at the Party National Secretariat, Buhari House, Abuja on Thursday, saying it must be noted however, that the suspended Governor, Fubara was a political investment of former Governor Nyesom Wike and no one would watch his investment go down the drain.

He stated that Rivers today, is a safe city, free of guns and pipe line vandalisation with all, going about without bullet proof cars and body guards, indicating that he came to brief the Party National Working Committee, NWC, led by Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on recent development in the State.

He said: “Well, I can tell you categorically, I am not a prophet but for the immediate, it was a necessary evil. The decision of Mr. President was a necessary evil. If you read our publication, we say that it’s a painful acceptance. It was painful, but we needed to accept it as a necessary evil.

“So, Mr President’s decision was a necessary evil, and whether the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara or his suspension, as it were today, will be the only thing that will bring peace in Rivers State, I can tell you that the the more I know, 90%, 99% of the political imbroglio in the State is solved.”

The Rivers State political crisis has drawn National attention, with the former Governor and current FCT Minister, Wike, actively working behind the scenes to broker peace with suspended Governor Fubara.

Okocha emphasised that contrary to speculations, Wike was

not fueling the crisis but, trying to stabilise the situation.

He criticised Fubara for sidelining 27 lawmakers and working with only three, withholding funds from the State Assembly, and demolishing the Assembly complex under the pretext of renovation, saying; “these actions are threat to democracy and lawlessness.”

He further stressed: “I have told you before, and let me also repeat it, the President did not just declare a state of emergency. You are aware that time came when Mr President invited stakeholders from River State to the State House. In that meeting, we were over one hundred and fifty, 150. I was in attendance, and the President took his time, for 20, to 30 minutes to advise us and sue for peace.

“The Governor had the opportunity, because the President gave him time to speak on the matter. You are aware that an eightpoint decision was reached from that meeting.

“Maybe, what you do not know is that at every paragraph that was read, not by Mr President himself, but by our father, former Governor of River State, Peter Odili at every paragraph he read, the President would interject and ask, is that what you agreed, all of us would agree, yes.

“That is why I worry, because somebody who was in that meeting went back home, just in their bid to feast on the Governor’s pockets, to say that the Governor was under duress. There was no pressure anywhere. We had the best of serene environment.

“The only reason why our friend, the suspended Governor fought was because there were some elders who said, look, you have signed your death warrant. Why did you go to sign that? From there, they went to Court against Mr President, saying he had no right, that the decision reached, couldn’t have been constitutional, that they are political.

“I am here to actually, brief the National Working Committee, NWC, led by the National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on the development in the State. I thought I owed them that responsibility and to also seize the opportunity to thank the Party at the National level for coming heavily, to support our position in the State,” he added.

For instance, the speed limit on the 3rd Mainland Bridge is 80km/h, while on NITELMobolaji Bank Anthony Way, it’s 60km/h.

Other areas with designated speed limits include Ojota Bridge by Motorways at 50km/h, Lekki Ikoyi Bridge at 60km/h, Allen Avenue Junction at 50km/h, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road at 60km/h.

Additionally, Ikorodu Roads, OshodiApapa Expressway, and Epe Expressway have

speed limits of 60km/h, 60km/h, and 80km/h respectively. The Muritala Mohammed International Airport Road also has a speed limit of 60km/h. Exceeding these speed limits will attract a fine of N50,000.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), on various occasion had said it’s been

allowances once we improve our IGR. So let us be committed to doubling our efforts,” he said.

Opeifa said the management is determined to recommence cargo commitment from Lagos to Kano, even as he said he would be at Ibadan to flag off the Dugbe end of the movement once the service begins.

He also commended all railway women, urging them to continue to prove their mettle in keeping the wheel of the rail going.

Addressing the welfare of pensioners, Opeifa assured that the corporation will continue to work at improving their welfare.

“I don’t need to be told, I can feel so many things and I can only assure you that the management will continue to work at improving your living conditions,” he said.

working to reduce road crashes and casualties in Nigeria, and the implementation of speed limits is part of this effort.

In fact, the use of speed limiting devices has been compulsory for commercial vehicles since October 1st, 2016.

TTP raises alarm over sabotage of Lagos ports’ e-call-up system

The Lagos Ports, Trucks Transit Parks (TTP) have raised the alarm that some individuals, both outside and in government, who benefitted from the extortion of N300,000 and N250,000 from truckers along the port access roads before the implementation of ETO (electronic call-up system) are already fighting back to frustrate the electronic call-up system.

Speaking exclusive with Transportation Correspondents Association of Nigeria (TCAN) in Lagos, the Managing Director of TTP, Jama Onwubuariri explained that the ETO app has been upgraded 160 times since inception in 2021.

According to the TTP Boss, “After the port concessioning in 2006, a lot of the spaces within the ports that were being used for packing trucks temporarily while they are waiting for their cargo or to drop or to pick up, were now being used for stacking containers.

“Again, like I said, the population has grown, so import and export activities have increased. The spaces that the trucks have used to wait in the ports while they are being serviced is now being used to keep cargoes.

“So because of that, we now had a

tailback of the trucks on the ports access roads. Now, when you bring in what we typically call the Nigerian factor, some people want to make quick profits out of any negative situation that they see. So you had law enforcement agents, you had private actors getting involved to help drivers to get faster access into the ports.

“Effectively, that led to a sort of cartel that if you do not pay N300,000 or N250,000, your truck will not get into the ports. It was a bit of embarrassment for us a country.

“There was even a time that the government came up with what they call presidential tax force on Apapa traffic, all geared towards finding a solution.

“But what we told government is, an ad-hoc approach is not going to solve the problem. You need a targeted, longterm, technology-driven solution. So we developed the ETO app as an indigenous application that will deal with both the issue on hand and the invisible Nigerian factor which comes with it.

“So what ETO has done since its introduction in February of 2021 is to assign roles to every stakeholder. Lagos State Government and the Nigerian Ports Authority are to ensure that there

is enforcement of the standard operating procedures.

“So before you see the truck on the road, they need to have been on an electronic queue before they come out on the road. And there are certain factors that will determine their place on the queue. Factors like, when did you book? when did you notify the system that you have a business? where are you going?

if you are going to Apapa Port, for example, what cargo or what business are you going to do relative to the second truck that is going to Tin-Can and is going to carry a bulk cargo instead of a containerized cargo? Other factors also looks at how ready is the terminal to receive you?

“When you see congestion on the road, it means that there is also congestion electronically, because what that means is that you have a lot of trucks booking to go into any of these destinations without a measured readiness or speed of those destinations attending to them. So you can use the electronic platform to now monitor the efficiency of the road.

“So the federal government has been very happy with what we’ve been able to do, but there are still a lot of challenges within the system. Like I mentioned, you

LASWA maps Lagos waterways to boost safety

The General Manager of Lagos State Waterways Authority, (LASWA), Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, announced the mapping of the entire Lagos waterways to boost safety.

Mr Emmanuel said the move would also help to locate abandoned dredging pipes and remove them to avoid accidents.

According to him, “We have been able to map the entire waterways in Lagos; we were able to map it to provide us with the locations of these dredging pipes and how we are going to go about it.

Because you have to ensure that these things are gotten rid of, you have to ensure that the wrecks are removed,” he said.

He advised dredgers to avoid abandoning their equipment on the waterways after working.

“Now, talking about dredgers, why would you use equipment and then abandon it on the waterways? There are other users of the waterways. My clear message to every dredging company is to think about the

next user of the waterways, the same place you are dredging; if you don’t do the appropriate thing, would you be able to dredge there? So, it’s a very clear message of removing your dredging pipes once you are done dredging and removing your dredging,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the recently concluded International Women’s Day, Emmanuel added that he has been able to address the issue of gender imbalance in the agency. He mentioned that women have been instrumental to the successes the agency has recorded so far.

“When I came into LASWA, there were maybe four or five women, I think, because the fifth one left, so there were four women. And over time, I saw that there was a gender imbalance in terms of how many men there were; the ratio of men to women was high,” he said.

have the Nigerian factor.

Some of the people who were on the road collecting N250,000, N300,000 per trucks in 2020, early 2021, are not happy that an electronic system has now come to take over their work and their so-called means of livelihood. So we’re still experiencing a lot of opposition and challenges from such individuals and sometimes organizations.

“There are also those who are found within the government sector. They are part of the employees of government agencies, but because of their particular roles, they were part of those who were benefiting from the old system. So sometimes when approvals for innovations come to them for recommendation, their recommendations are negative.

“Despite this setback, we have made over 160 upgrades to the ETO app since February 27, 2021. Just like you have your Google apps and other apps that you use, and they are upgraded from time to time, we’ve made over 160 upgrades to the ETO app since inception. These upgrades are to increase the security, the ease of doing business using the application and to cure identified problems, which we get from our workers on the field.”

Ekiti rainstorm crisis and the need for urgent action

The recent devastation caused by rainstorms in Ekiti State has drawn attention to the critical humanitarian issues facing affected communities.

Although, Governor Biodun Oyebanji has expressed deep concern over the destruction of over 300 homes, which rendered many citizens homeless and disrupting their lives, the humanitarian crisis occasioned by the disaster leaves more questions than answers.

The storm, which struck Oye, Ayede, and Ilupeju Ekiti, has intensified the already pressing challenges posed by climate change.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), led by Professor Charles Anosike had issued early warning signs regarding increased rainfall, yet the scale of the destruction underscores the urgent need for better preparedness and response strategies. Despite these warnings, many residents found themselves unprotected, highlighting a significant gap in disaster readiness.

Governor Oyebanji, officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Ekiti State Emergency Management Agency (EKSEMA), needs to do more than just visit the affected areas to assess the damage and offer support.

Government’s commitment to not abandoning victims in their time of need is a crucial message which must translate into tangible actions. The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has a pivotal role in coordinating interventions, ensuring that affected families receive the assistance necessary for recovery and rebuilding.

The loss of homes and infrastructure has severe implications for local economies, leaving many without the means to support themselves.

Governor Oyebanji’s call for a maintenance culture among residents is essential, yet it requires systemic backing from the government.

Initiatives to reinforce building standards and promote community engagement in disaster preparedness are vital in mitigating future risks. As communities grapple with the aftermath of these storms, the need for immediate and effective governmental response becomes increasingly apparent. The collaboration between state and federal agencies must be strengthened to create a robust framework for disaster management. Addressing these humanitarian challenges is not only about recovery but also about building resilience against future climate-related events in Ekiti State.

“How do you expect to qualify?” –Ex-Super Eagles coach slams Nigeria after Zimbabwe setback

STORIES BY IHESIULO GRACE

Former Super Eagles coach Johannes Bonfrère has expressed his deep frustration over the Nigeria’s failure to secure victory in their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo. Bonfrère was a key coaching staff during Nigeria’s golden era when the country won Olympic gold in 1996, lifted the AFCON in 1994 and qualified for the World Cup for the first time. However, the good times

are few and far apart for Nigeria football recently as the Super Eagles reached the final of the AFCON last year but look set to miss consecutive editions of the World Cup. And Bonfrère has not hold back in his criticism of the current squad after the team struggled to a disappointing 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday.

Speaking to Complete Sports from his home in the Netherlands, the Dutchman lamented Nigeria’s inability to dominate a team they once brushed aside with ease.

Tuesday’s clash saw Victor Osimhen give Nigeria the lead in the second half, raising hopes of a muchneeded win. However, a late equaliser from Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa left the Super Eagles frustrated and significantly dented their chances of automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. When asked what went wrong, Bonfrère raised concerns over the team’s tactical approach and lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

“I didn’t watch the game, but did the coach not have enough information on

Zimbabwe? Did he use the wrong tactics? Or did the players fail to execute the game plan?

“Was it a loss of concentration? Why couldn’t the attackers score more goals? If they had put away two or three chances, Zimbabwe’s late goal wouldn’t have mattered as much.

“It’s sad, painful, and unfortunate. Small teams are now looking the Super Eagles in the eye and asking, ‘What can you do?’ No team fears them anymore, and that is worrying.”

Cal Poly Cuts Swimming, diving amid financial struggles

San Luis Obispo, CA – In a surprising and controversial move, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has announced the termination of its men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs, despite recent competitive successes.

The decision, which comes as a shock to athletes, coaches, and supporters, has been attributed to financial challenges and evolving NCAA regulations.

A Sudden Blow to a Thriving Program

The Cal Poly swimming and diving teams have been making steady progress in recent years, earning recognition in conference championships and producing standout athletes. Their unexpected elimination has left many questioning the administration’s priorities and the university’s commitment to athletics.

“This is heartbreaking,” said one senior swimmer who had aspirations of competing at the national level. “We’ve put in years of hard work, and now we’re being told it’s over,

just like that.”

Financial Constraints and NCAA Regulations University officials cited mounting financial pressures as a key factor in the decision. Maintaining a competitive swimming and diving program requires substantial funding for scholarships, travel, training facilities, and coaching staff. Recent shifts in NCAA regulations, including changes to scholarship distribution and compliance costs, have added to the financial burden.

“We understand the impact this decision has on our student-athletes,” said Cal Poly Athletic Director Don Oberhelman. “However, the financial sustainability of our athletic department requires us to make difficult choices.

This decision allows us to focus resources on programs that align better with our long-term strategic goals.”

Athletes and Supporters Push Back

In response to the

announcement, athletes, alumni, and supporters have launched petitions and social media campaigns to save the program. Many argue that swimming and diving provide critical opportunities for student-athletes and bring prestige to the university.

“This isn’t just about sports,” said a former Cal Poly swimmer. “It’s about the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance that swimming teaches. Cutting the program undermines the school’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.”

What’s Next for Affected Athletes?

With the sudden elimination of their program, student-athletes are now faced with tough decisions. Some may transfer to schools with active swimming and diving teams, while others will have to adjust to life without their sport.

Cal Poly has stated that it will honor current scholarships and assist students in transitioning

to other opportunities, but for many, this is little consolation.

As the dust settles, the controversy surrounding this decision is unlikely to fade quickly. Many in the Cal Poly community are calling for greater transparency and efforts to explore alternative solutions before permanently shutting down a program that has meant so much to so many.

A Sign of a Larger Trend?

The cuts at Cal Poly highlight a growing trend of universities facing tough financial decisions in athletics. With increased operational costs, shifts in NCAA policies, and the evolving landscape of college sports, more schools may find themselves making similarly difficult choices.

For now, the Cal Poly swimming and diving teams face an uncertain future, leaving athletes and supporters wondering if anything could have been done to save the program.

significant efforts being made under the leadership of the current Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

*Economic and Social Impact of Agriculture*

Agriculture in Nigeria is not just about food production; it is a key driver of economic stability and rural development. The country remains a top producer of staple crops like cassava, maize, rice, and yams, while also exporting cash crops such as cocoa, sesame seeds, and palm oil. However, Nigeria has faced persistent challenges, including climate change, outdated farming techniques, and limited access to financing for smallholder farmers.

Recognizing these obstacles, the government has intensified efforts to transform the sector by leveraging technology, improving infrastructure, and implementing policies aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and boosting productivity.

*Strides Under Minister Abubakar Kyari*

Since assuming office in 2023, Senator Abubakar Kyari has championed a series of reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector. His tenure has seen a renewed focus on food security, mechanization, and innovation-driven farming practices. Key initiatives under his leadership include:

*The National Agricultural

Growth Scheme (NAGS)*: This program aims to improve access to modern farming tools, quality seeds, and fertilizers for smallholder farmers, thereby enhancing productivity and reducing food shortages.

*Climate-Resilient Farming Programs*: Recognizing the threats posed by climate change, the ministry has introduced policies to encourage climate-smart agriculture. These include investments in irrigation systems, drought-resistant crops, and afforestation initiatives.

*Soil Health and Fertility Enhancement*: One of the significant strides under Kyari has been the introduction of the Nigeria Farmers’ Soil Health Card Scheme. This initiative allows farmers to access real-time soil data, ensuring optimal application of fertilizers and sustainable land management.

*Agribusiness Development and Export Promotion*: Kyari’s administration has worked to increase Nigeria’s agricultural exports by streamlining regulatory processes and improving supply chain logistics. The focus on boosting the export of processed agricultural products aims to reduce dependency on crude oil revenues and enhance foreign exchange earnings.

*Tackling Food Inflation and Insecurity*: To mitigate the impact of rising food

prices, Kyari has worked with stakeholders to reduce the cost of essential food items. His administration has facilitated investments in large-scale farming and storage facilities, ensuring stable food supply chains.

*Challenges and the Road Ahead*

While progress has been made, Nigeria’s agricultural sector still faces hurdles, including insecurity in farming regions, inadequate infrastructure, and fluctuating global market prices. However, the government’s proactive policies, combined with increasing private sector participation, signal a promising future.

Moving forward, continued investments in agricultural research, rural road networks, and digital farming solutions will be crucial in making Nigeria’s agriculture more competitive and sustainable. With Senator Abubakar Kyari at the helm, there is optimism that the sector will not only feed the nation but also drive economic prosperity and global competitiveness.

Agriculture remains a pillar of Nigeria’s economic development, and the strides made under the leadership of Minister Abubakar Kyari indicate a commitment to modernizing the sector. As the country grapples with food security and economic diversification, a strong and resilient agricultural system will be fundamental to achieving long-term growth. The efforts underway today will shape Nigeria’s agricultural future, ensuring that it remains a powerhouse both domestically and internationally.
