Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele at the weekend challenged governments at all levels, corporate organisations and philanthropists to invest more meaningfully in education to produce global billionaires and brands.
Highlighting how developed and emerging nations in Asia, Europe and North America leveraged education as a veritable tool of socio-economic transformation to attain their national aspirations, Bamidele advocated for education that liberate minds, not one that instils fears.
The Senator representing Ekiti Central in the 10th Senate made the call after the Ekiti State University conferred Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) on him at its 29th convocation held on its main campus in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State over the weekend.
Bamidele received the honour alongside Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr. Zacch Adedeji and Chairman, Governing Board, Bank of Industry, Dr. Mansur Muhtar. This makes it the third honorary doctorate he has received between January 2003 and
March 2025.
In his address at the convocation, the high-ranking parliamentarian emphasised the significance of education for the socio-economic transformation of nations worldwide. This, according to him, has been deployed to attain developmental goals and conquer heinous challenges.
He specifically observed; “When I talk about quality education, I mean the kind of education that liberates minds; that meaningfully transforms generations and that unlocks doors to limitless opportunities across all sectors.
“In this sense, education is a veritable tool that all developed and emerging countries the world over have leveraged to get to where they are today. This tool is equally available to us as a people in the pursuit of our national aspiration.”
To realise significant socioeconomic development across all sectors, however, Bamidele noted that this required “providing not only an enabling environment, but also a highly competitive one for our nation to be globally competitive.”
Elucidating, he went on; “It also entails purposeful public investments in our younger
generations, and we act now. It, no doubt, demands sustained and strategic support from private interests across all sectors that produce the global brands and billionaires.
“This is the credible template that produced Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla; Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon Inc; Mark Zuckerberg, Co-founder of FaceBook and Instagram; Larry Page, CEO of Google; Warren Buffet, the proud owner of Berkshire Hathaway Inc and many more.
“It is now time for us all to leverage the tool of quality education to produce our own global billionaires and brands. But we cannot achieve it by accident or by chance, but by strategic planning and aggressive pursuit of those plans.”
Observing that nations may not succeed in achieving lofty set goals without redefining national priorities and investing meaningfully in people, the Senate leader charged that in essence - education that liberates minds is the only answer to desired ends. And the earlier nations start investing more strategically in their people, the better for everyone.

He called for consideration of adherence to the Beijing Declaration that sought 30 per cent inclusion for women in politics.

Tinubu: TSA Removal Boosting FCT Development
Ihesiulo Grace
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that his administration’s decision to remove the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is accelerating development and increasing citizen participation in governance. He made this known during a Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa, where he received FCT residents led by Minister Nyesom Wike.
The President explained that the bureaucracy associated with the TSA had hindered infrastructure growth in Abuja. He credited Wike’s request for exemption as a key factor in the rapid transformation of the city.
“I remember the day the FCT Minister came to me and said, ‘Please take us out of the problem of the TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more.’ I said, ‘Show me what you are about to do,’ and he presented his plans. Everything started changing rapidly,” Tinubu said.
Since the policy shift, several abandoned projects, including the long-delayed Vice President’s official residence, have been revived. Healthcare centers have been rehabilitated, schools upgraded, and rural areas have seen significant infrastructural improvements. Security measures have also been reinforced to ensure a safer environment for residents.
The President commended Wike for restructuring the FCT public service, empowering civil servants
to aspire to higher positions, and fostering innovative governance. He urged Nigerians to prioritize results over ethnic and religious considerations in leadership choices.
“Today, we live in peace, and security is improving. Hunger is coming down. Food prices are lowering. We can go to the market and do business. And our diversity and belief in ourselves are becoming stronger,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to national unity and progress.
Minister Wike expressed gratitude for the President’s support and described the event as historic—the first time FCT residents personally extended Sallah greetings to the President. He reassured that multiple development projects would be completed soon and pledged his unwavering loyalty to the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, along with members of the National Assembly, judiciary, security chiefs, religious and traditional leaders, and representatives of women and youth groups.
With the FCT now free from TSA constraints, the administration remains committed to fostering development and inclusivity in governance, promising a brighter future for Abuja’s residents.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, England said Monday its real income has fallen by £1 billion ($1.3 billion) a year. This is compared to 2010 earnings as it warned of “unprecedented” challenges to funding its content.
“Without intervention, it will be difficult to maintain the current ambition and volume of UK content,” the BBC said in its strategic plan for the year ahead contained in a report.
The BBC Group says it expects an income of £6.1
billion in 2025/26, which represents a £1 billion annual drop since 2010 once inflation is taken into account.
“We have delivered significant efficiencies, including cutting 2,000 roles over the last five years but we have reached the limit of substantial future gains from this approach,” warned the annual report.
The BBC “faces an unprecedented content funding challenge, as co-production partnerships with global streamers and media companies have reduced across the sector,” the report added.
Funded primarily through a licence fee on
television owners, but that has been frozen for the past two years while general inflation has risen sharply, the BBC’s Royal Charter - which outlines the corporation’s governance - is currently being reviewed by the government.
“We believe the new Charter should secure a universal public service BBC for a generation,” urged the broadcaster.
“This requires a Charter that: safeguards the BBC’s independence; ensures that it is sustainable for the long term, including sufficient, reliable funding; and allows the BBC to respond to changing audience needs with speed and agility,” it added.
Originally established in 1922 as the British Broadcasting Company, the BBC evolved into its present state with its current name on New Year’s Day 1927.
Arguably the world’s oldest and leading public service broadcaster with a portfolio of television services - including the UK’s most-watched channel BBC One and multi award-winning channels for children - the global broadcaster by stature parades national and regional television programmes and services across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Plateau State Government has awarded a N30 billion contract for the rehabilitation and construction of conservation structures at the Langtang Dam to address water scarcity in the southern senatorial district of the state.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, speaking at the contract signing ceremony on Saturday in Jos, highlighted that the project demonstrates his administration’s commitment to resolving the state’s longstanding water supply challenges.
The initiative is being
executed under the AgroClimatic Resilience in SemiArid Landscape ,ACReSAL, project; a World Bank-funded programme in partnership with the Plateau State Government.
The Governor revealed that the project, located in Langtang North Local Government Area, is scheduled for completion within 30 months. He described it as a critical milestone in efforts to stabilize water supply in the region.
The Governor explained that the Langtang Dam rehabilitation project is financed through a loan secured under the World Bank’s framework, in
collaboration with other northern states.
Governor Mutfwang provided further details about the project, explaining that its scope includes desilting the two dams in Langtang North, constructing hedge rows to prevent future siltation, and maintaining embankments with compacted laterite.
Additional measures, such as planting grass and trees, are designed to prevent erosion, enhance environmental preservation, and combat desertification.
He emphasized that the interventions aim to ensure sustainable water supply, restore the environment, and
significantly improve water availability for the southern part of the state.
Mr. Garba Gonkol, the Project Coordinator of ACReSAL in Plateau State, commended the governor’s commitment to prioritizing projects that have a direct and positive impact on citizens. He described this as an unprecedented level of dedication to resolving water challenges in the state.
Similarly, Mr. Akin Fagbohun, the Project Engineer and Contractor, assured stakeholders that the project would be executed within the agreed timeline and meet all specified standards.
Residents of Ekit Itam 11 in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have sent a heartfelt ‘Save-Our-Soul’(SOS) message to Governor Umo Eno, following a string of criminal activities at St. Domino’s Primary School.
It was gathered that Hoodlums have reportedly dismantled and stolen roofing sheets and iron protectors from the school, leaving the facility exposed and vulnerable.
A visit to the school revealed that all the iron protectors along the fence and gatehouse had been removed, making it easier for intruders to access the premises.
The Village Head of Ekit Itam, Eteidung Aloysius Ebong, shared the community’s frustrations while speaking from his residence.
He explained that the theft of these protective fixtures had left the school dangerously exposed. Although outsiders might believe the school is fully fenced, Ebong pointed out that there is no perimeter fence behind the school, making it accessible from multiple entry points.
The issue, according to Ebong, traces back to the construction of the Uyo/Ikot Ekpene Highway when Julius Berger built a fence along the school’s frontage but left the rest of the area unprotected.
As a result, the school has become a frequent passage for many people, including those with questionable intentions. “It has become difficult to tell who’s here for good reasons and who’s here for criminal activities,” he said.
Despite several letters sent to the state government requesting help, the community’s appeals have gone unanswered.
The Village Head also expressed his concern over the lack of action to protect the school’s property, adding that the Ministry of Education has granted permission to four religious organizations to use the school compound for
their activities. This has led to increased foot traffic, further complicating security efforts.
Chief Emmanuel Ebong, Chairman of the Village Council, also highlighted the growing issue of scavengers searching for metal to steal, further exacerbating the problem.
“These scavengers are so persistent that we’ve had to set up night patrols to safeguard the school, But even with our surveillance, something always goes missing. They’re always lurking around.” he said
The situation took a more alarming turn when Mr. Dominic Edem, a youth leader in the area, recalled an incident where a suspect was caught attempting to steal roofing materials from the school.
The suspect reportedly threatened the youths who apprehended him, but despite their efforts to bring the thief to justice, the case was eventually abandoned due to financial and logistical challenges.
In addition to these challenges, Head Teacher Mr. Courage Sunny Udom expressed growing fears over the increasing criminal activity in the area.
Udom has been personally threatened by the vandals and noted that the lack of a solid fence has turned the school into a shortcut for community members, especially at night.
“I’m even afraid to put ceiling fans in my office because they might steal them,” he said.
He identified scavengers as the primary culprits, describing them as highly hostile and disruptive.
Despite the difficulties, Udom praised the efforts of the village council and local youths who have been working tirelessly to protect the school to the best of their abilities.
The residents of Ekit Itam 11 are now urgently calling on Governor Umo Eno to intervene and ensure that proper security measures are put in place to safeguard the school and its property from further vandalism and theft.
Osun communal crisis: Adeleke threatens royal fathers with dethronement
Tunde Opalana, Abuja
Aftermath of the Ifon, Erin Osun, Ilobu communal clashing Osun State, the state governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has threatened to dethrone any traditional ruler that could not prevent or contain crisis in his domain.
Governor Adeleke specifically warned traditional rulers of Ifon, Erin Osun and Ilobu communities that failure to sustain current peace and de-escalation of the crisis in their communities would definitely lead to their removal from office Adeleke’s riot act was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press
NRC
Secretary, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday in Osogbo.
In the statement made available to the Daily Times, it became imperative for the governor to have the stern warning to preempt unconfirmed reports that some elements across the conflict areas were planning another round of attacks.
The statement reads, “In the midst of Sallah celebrations, I got reports of some people planning another round of conflict around Ifon, Ilobu and Erin Osun towns. The security agencies have tightened surveillance to ensure no attacks take place.
“The security agencies are also speeding up the
interrogation of key chieftains and actors in the conflict. I will remind top leaders of the towns that the peace undertaking they are signing are not for joke. They will be held accountable. There will be accountability before the law.
“The curfew we relaxed was on humanitarian grounds. As a compassionate government, we know many innocent people are suffering because of the evil agenda of a few elements across the conflict areas. Any attempt to exploit the adjustment of the curfew for renewed violence will be met with full re-imposition of the 24-hour curfew.
“Additionally, I will remove from office, any traditional

The Daily Times recalled that renewed communal clashes in the affected communities have claimed lives while goods and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed leading the state government to imposed curfew in Ifon, Ilobu and Erin-Osun towns.

The Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ismail Mudashir, stated this in a press release yesterday.
Pledging that the state government will assist the families of the victims, Governor Okpebholo disclosed that 14 suspects arrested in connection with the heinous crime will be brought to Abuja for further interrogation. He warned that they cannot escape justice - if found culpable.
say the facts.
“If they are brought to justice, it would serve as a deterrent to those who might want to do this in future. I know that people from other parts of the country have been staying with your people in Edo for centuries in a very conducive atmosphere. And this barbaric act has never happened. I’m sure, under your watch, this will not happen again.
“I thank you very much. You’ve told me now that you’ll meet the Kano State governor today. This is very good. Please continue what you are doing. Mr President also told us that you are doing very well in this direction and we have seen it because, as I said, we have spoken several times on this matter in the last 72 hours.”
courage in the task of nation building, steering the ship of Nigeria in the right direction.
He has provided honest and transparent leadership in Nigeria by taking bold and audacious decisions and implementing the right policies to address the country’s economic challenges.
“As our leader turns 73, we pray that God will continue to give him strength, wisdom and good health to continue to serve and direct the affairs of our country towards political and economic prosperity.”
While assuring that the perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law, he described the killings of the innocent travellers as unfortunate and condemnable.
He stressed; “It’s unfortunate that it happened in our state. We are here to say, to let you and other people know that we are not happy. The president is doing something drastic about this. He’s not happy also. The IG has swung into action. The DIG CID is in charge. So far, they have arrested 14 suspects.
“So they are bringing them to Abuja for interrogation. We have also set up a committee to see that we take care of the families of the deceased.”
Responding, the Deputy President of the Senate said the perpetrators of the act must be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.
His words; “We cannot undo what has been done. But we all want - all Nigerians, what they are looking forward to is to make sure that these people are arrested and brought to justice. And you are doing well in that direction. And I’m also glad you’ve spoken about the fact that your government is ready to assist the families of those affected.
“I want you to continue to pursue the case so that all those who were involved in these barbaric actions are brought to justice. It’s a barbaric action, to
The Daily Times recalls that a mob had intercepted the travellers from the north who were on their way to Kano State from Rivers State for Sallah celebrations last Thursday. Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has condemned the murder of the 16 travellers at Uromi, in Edo State, describing it as a senseless act of violence, unacceptable and having no place in human society.

“As a people, we must work together to promote peace, unity, and understanding among our people. We cannot afford to let such act of violence divide us or undermine our collective efforts to build a better Nigeria.”
Consoling respective bereaved families, the government and people of Edo State and all those affected by the needless act, the Senate President prayed that God grants the departed peaceful rest. And the loved ones they left behind, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Barr Julius Abure has said the Party will use the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship election in November, to test their expected victory in the 2027 Presidential election.
Abure stated this in Awka, Anambra State capital on Monday, according to Obiora Ifo, National Publicity Secretary of the Party, in a press statement, during a forum, organized by an organ of the Party, Directorate of
Mobilization and Integration, DMI, for aspirants to meet with their delegates, ahead of the Primary election, coming up, Saturday, this week.
Abure, represented by the National Women Leader, Mrs Dudu Manuga said: “We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be. LP has grown beyond a briefcase Party, we are in all the States of Nigeria and Abuja, and we are getting ready, not just for Anambra, but for 2027.
“After the Primary election this Saturday, no one will be angry. We will all join
hands to emerge in the main election in November. Let us not be weak, let us not biker, let us all stand strong, be united and nothing will be impossible for us to achieve.
“This forum is to bring the aspirants together and make them integrate with the people they want to govern. We will plant LP in every polling unit. What is happening today in Anambra State, is crucial for our victory in 2027.”

The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CPPDP) has advised President Bola Tinubu to perish the thought of manipulating the 2017 election in his favour.
The Conference was emphatic in cautioning Tinubu to shelve the thoughts of retaining the Presidency beyond May, 29, 2027 as “Nigerians will never reward failure and purveying of hardship with re-election or allow anybody to manipulate the outcome of the 2027 Presidential election.”
The Conference also stated that no amount of “electoral maneuverings, intimidation or coercion” from the All Progressives Congress (APC) will yield electoral control of the Federal Capital Territory, “which is a stronghold of the PDP to the APC in the coming February 2026 FCT Area Council election.”
This is part of the resolution reached by the Conference in its meeting on Monday, 31st of March 2025 in response to the open confession by President Tinubu on Sunday, 30th of March 2025 that he consented to the request by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja Chief Nyesom Wike to remove the FCT from the Treasury Singe Account
(TSA) for the partisan reason of winning election in the FCT.
In a statement on Monday by Barr. Obinna Nwachukwu, it’s Protem National Coordinator, the CP-PDP said “President Tinubu also confessed that he threatened to sack the FCT Minister if the PDP again lead the FCT election even when the FCT is an undisputed stronghold of the PDP where the President was defeated in the 2023 Presidential election and where the PDP has 42 Councilors and three Council Chairmen over APC’s three Chairmen and 20 Councilors.
“The Conference hopes that the quest to capture the FCT for the APC is not the driving force behind the condemnable allegations of harassment, land grabbing, vindictive revocation and demolition of property reportedly targeted to intimidate perceived APC opponents, and the reported hazy contract allocations to favour APC apologists in the FCT.
“In any event, with a badly battered, worsened by bad governance, it is clear that the APC has no chance in the FCT and the 2027 general elections despite its rigging plots.
“Moreover, the partisan and politically motivated decision by the President to expose public fund
to opaque, reckless and uncontrolled spending stripped of the necessary transparency and accountability required in the management of government revenue and expenditure ostensibly offers a glimpse into the ill-conceived motives that drive the unaccountability, abuse of financial regulations, and brazen corruption being witnessed under the administration of the failed APC.
“Against this backdrop, the CP-PDP demands for an open public probe into the accounts and activities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) under Chief Wike, especially since the removal

of the FCT from the TSA.
“In any event, that President Tinubu and his supporters are obsessed with FCT and the 2027 elections at this time shows that the administration is not focused on governance, leaving the nation drifting without direction with escalated insecurity, economic hardship and pervasive uncertainty in the polity since President Tinubu took office on May, 29, 2023.”
The Conference said it is certain that Nigerians “cannot be hoodwinked in any way to reward failure and purveying of hardship with their votes in the FCT and in the 2027 elections.”
In response, the Governor of Kano State commended Governor Okpebholo for his swift intervention and support to the bereaved families.
“We appreciate the Governor of Edo State for his prompt response to this tragic event. It is well known that our people were returning from Port Harcourt when they were brutally murdered. The majority of the victims were from two local governments in Kano State. Governor Okpebholo immediately visited the scene, ensured that the corpses were retrieved, and arranged for their proper burial.
“He also made commitments to support the affected families, and I can confirm that he has fulfilled those promises.
“We trust his assurance that
the culprits will be brought to book, as justice remains our utmost priority. The people of Kano are peaceful and hospitable. This tragedy serves as a lesson to all, and I urge all leaders across Nigeria to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens, regardless of their location. Governor Okpebholo’s visit today is a mark of true leadership, and we appreciate his gesture.”
Speaking on behalf of the Arewa community in Edo State, Badamasi Sally reaffirmed the longstanding cordial relationship between the northern community and Edo people, emphasizing that the unfortunate event should not be used to tarnish the State’s image.
“I was born and raised in Edo State, and we have always maintained a peaceful relationship with the people here. This incident should not be used to create division or smear the reputation of the Edo State Government. The swift response of the state government was commendable. Moreover, it was the people of Uromi who rescued some of the victims from the assailants. This tragedy will not change our bond with the people of Edo.”
Fred Akhigbe, leader of the Edo community in Kano, also expressed appreciation for Governor Okpebholo’s visit, urging both communities to maintain peace and unity.
“We are grateful to the governor of Edo State for personally coming to Kano to express his condolences. When this tragic incident happened, there was apprehension, but we are reassured by the swift actions taken by both state governments. We sympathize with the people of Kano State and pray for the victims.
“I have lived in Kano for 52 years, and we must remember that we are all one. There is no need for conflict between us. We commend both governors for their leadership and commitment to justice.”
Governor Okpebholo’s visit underscores his administration’s commitment to justice and national unity.
The State Government had assured that security agencies will continue working to ensure that those responsible for the killings are apprehended and prosecuted.
Determined to rid the Niger Delta region of oil bunkering, troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have dismantled 18 illegal refineries and apprehended 39 suspected oil thieves across multiple states in the region.
During the six-day operation, which took place from March 24 to 30, security operatives also confiscated over 60,000 litres of stolen petroleum products. The coordinated crackdown was executed in collaboration with other security agencies, targeting notorious hotspots for illicit refining activities.
Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Division, disclosed this in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Monday. He emphasized the military’s commitment to sustaining the momentum against crude oil
theft and ensuring a crime-free environment for legitimate oil exploration.
“Troops of 6 Division have intensified their operations against crude oil theft and related crimes in the Niger Delta Region. Over the past week, we have successfully dismantled 18 illegal refining sites and arrested 39 suspects. The operations, conducted across Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom States, led to the seizure of more than 60,000 litres of stolen petroleum products,” the statement read.
In Rivers State, soldiers intercepted a fabricated twin tank containing 18,000 litres of stolen crude along Ochokocho Road in Etche Local Government Area. A MAN Diesel container truck, concealed with bags of sawdust and carrying unquantified stolen products, was also seized, though its occupants fled upon sighting the
troops. Additionally, multiple illegal refining sites along the Imo River and Rumuekpe Forest in Ahoada East LGA were dismantled, with over 17,800 litres of illicitly refined products confiscated.
Also, Bayelsa State was not spared in the sweep. Around Adibawa in Yenagoa LGA, security forces uncovered two illegal refining sites with thousands of litres of stolen crude stored in drums and sacks.
A similar discovery was made in Southern Ijaw LGA, where over 1,800 litres of stolen crude and illegally refined fuel were seized.
The crackdown extended to Delta State, where troops raided illicit refining hubs in Egbokodo Itsekiri Community, Warri South LGA. Jerricans filled with illegally refined products were confiscated, while tools used in crude oil bunkering, including hoses and metal pipes, were destroyed. Meanwhile, in Akwa
Ibom State, troops maintained a strong presence, effectively deterring oil thieves from operating freely in the area.
Meanwhile, Major General Emmanue Emekah, General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, commended the troops for their commitment and urged them to remain relentless in their crackdown on oil theft. He warned individuals involved in illicit oil activities to abandon their criminal enterprises and seek lawful means of livelihood or face the full force of the law.
With Nigeria losing billions in revenue to crude oil theft annually, the military’s sustained operations in the Niger Delta remain a crucial step toward restoring integrity in the oil sector and safeguarding the region’s environment from further devastation.

When Governor Hyacinth Alia approved the creation of Benue Geographic Information Services and signed the Executive Order for its take off, its mandate was clearly spelt out. Digitize land administration, support infrastructure development, and contribute to making Benue State safe.
According to Mr Terna Kawen, Director Capacity Building and Stake Holders Engagement at BENGIS, this simply means to fast track the processes leading to the award of land statutory titles, online processing of applications, payment, land records, and keeping the process transparent based on existing laws.
“The Agency is also positioned to provide geospartial data for both the private and public sectors to support Urban and Regional Planning and Management by providing population indicies maps. Land use and classification plans, flood risk maps, geological formation maps, crime incidence maps, hydrology maps, drainage system plans, etc.
“It will also provide data on infrastructures like road network plans, transportation network maps, Hospitals, Schools, Markets Security posts, Power distribution network plans and data on many other variables that are useful in Urban and regional planning and management. The list is endless,” Tema said.
No doubt the task before BENGIS is enormous, but so also the determination of the Director-General, Professor Daniel Amine, who has hit the ground running, setting up the relevant team and infrastructure to drive the vision of setting up this all inclusive agency which will support all aspects of governance, from security to infrastructure, town planning and tourism, to maintaining balance in the ecosystem.
To Professor Amine, all these are achievable as his team has since hit the ground running. His first target is to ensure that the processing of land application and issuance of statutory land documents are done within 30 days as directed by Governor Alia.
“The premium time he wants is 30 days. If you apply for CofO, there isn’t any reason why you won’t be able to get it in 30 days. We have resumed and pursuing this course. Our portal is already up, and we are fine tuning and doing some testing to ensure that it is running seamlessly with the software we are using to process titles.” That assurance is golden, something to
take to the bank.
There is, however, a huge expectation on the citizens. Those who own land but refused to pay government its dues. “If you have CofO and you have not been paying ground rent, we are not going to forgive you. You will be charged from your last payment till today,” the Director-General said.
However, in pursuing this payment, the government has taken into cognisance the current economic realities and decided to waive 50 per cent of the accumulated ground rent.
“The good aspect of this is, the government of Rev. Fr Dr Hyacinth Alia has granted a tax relief. If you come now, you will get 50% reduction. He may decide to suspend the relief, so the earlier you come, the better,” he said.
To get the buy in of the people, Amine said the organisation, which has been granted independent status by the governor, will embark on massive awareness campaign on its services so as to get the people of the state to follow proper and secure channels of obtaining land and other information.
“We are going to come for your community meetings, neighbourhood, schools, and markets to talk to the people. Please take advantage of the relief the governor had granted and come to our office so that you enjoy the grant that has been provided.
“In a short while, we are going to come to your street and your neighbourhood, demanding for your ground rent and asking that you update your certificate of occupancy.
“If you have the old one from local government and you take it to the bank, the bank will not accept it. The bank will only accept the CofO that BENGIS issues, we are going to give you a new CofO, which will be accepted by banks.
“So, if you have the old one that is not digitized, please come to our office, we will collect it and give you another one. If you have a local government CofO, please bring it. we will upgrade it to the new standard CofO. It is not free, it is for a fee.”
As already enumerated, the primary goal of BENGIS is to locate and secure people’s assets, which include property, information, data, solid mineral deposit, security information, etc.
“When we locate these informations, assets, property, we provide the information for end users. It is the belief of Rev. Fr Dr Hyacinth Alia that we should use cutting age technology, especially in the processing of land titles for the teaming populace of Benue.
“You remember that before now, someone will begin to process his Certificate of Occupancy (CofO), and for 15-20 years, it is not ready. Fr Alia does not want that to continue. At the point of my appointment, he instructed me specifically to ensure that this process is simplified by making it an online process such that people can apply from the comfort of their homes, through their phones, computers or cyber cafes. People can apply for lands and titles and be able to track the process and know what stage it has moved from.”
To key into the BENGIS initiative, residents should download the agency’s app from the Google Play Store. “In another week, we assure that from anywhere around the world, you can go to Google Play Store and download our app and apply for whatever facility you want.”
Amine explained that BENGIS would also be providing critical information on the state of infrastructural facilities, security, and other areas of importance to the state.
“ While the titles are for individuals, we can provide information to government on where to locate schools, which roads is most critical and should be constructed next, because we know where the people live and the volume of traffic that flows downs the road everyday. It is therefore possible for us to advise the government on the next road to construct and which has more impact on the lives of the average Benue citizen.
“We can help locate your farm produce in the market, the best price. It is possible for us to produce maps and charts that will give information about where to get your products cheaper and a lot more.”
BENGIS seems to be like a jack of all trades and master of all. It is also involved in house numbering, a key security feature that also has economic advantages.
“When you number your house and Geo-tag it, it is possible to use goggle map to trace that house if a visitor visits. It is possible for the visitor to type the house number on his phone and goggle it to show the road to the house, adding that this would curb insecurity in the state.
“The type of house numbering we are going to do will be such that every house in our cities will be geo-tagged. We want to take it to the extent where if there is a yard and it has four houses or rooms, we geo-tag each, so as to locate a person easily through the phone with the help of goggle.”
In leading BENGIS, Amine says he is aware of the challenges and has already taken strategic steps to give it an upper cut.
For an agency like BENGIS to function
seamlessly, it must have a non-stop electricity supply. Unfortunately, this is completely absent at the massive complex.
“The biggest challenge I have found at BENGIS is power. The facility was not connected to public power supply after it was built, so in the past 90 days, we have had to run on generators, and if you have bought a liter of diesel recently, you know that it’s not production-friendly.
“I know that the great access and privileges His Excellency is giving to me now, I trust it will be a thing of the past shortly. Thankfully, this facility has a short roof, thus making it suitable for solar panels to be installed on top of the building. If we do that, it will help us run the entire building on solar.
“I also have very strong plans to have it connected to the public power supply because the whole industry is computer based, and power is needed to make meaningful progress.
“All the data that we process is stored in a system called saver. It is supposed to be on 24/7. When your activities are done for the day, the saver starts to update its memory, the update may last overnight, and when you return the next day, you begin to use again. If however the saver is switched off at night, the saver will now be trying to update what you did the day before and cope with what you’re doing on a new day, which will make it slow. The correction is simple, getting solar panels for the building to run the saver overnight to avoid excess workload the next day.
He explained why the saver needs to be updated at all times. “This is so that when I need a particular information, it will be able to connect and give an update information about that location. If a person in New York purchase a land, they need my saver to access the information. If there is no electricity it will be delayed. The facility is supposed to run at all times. The saver will not stop updating and receiving information.
“In our towns, for every satellite pole, there is a generator that is not put off. That is the kind of system we need here. This is the kind of powering system that is needed in our facility for the smooth running of this programme. A day will come in BENGiS when our generators go to backup degree two, and our light will go to back up degree one.”

Donald Trump’s announcement of impending tariffs targeting all trading partners, set to be unveiled on April 2. Investor concerns over escalating trade

recession risks amid the growing trade tensions.
President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by suggesting he may seek a third term in office. This consideration raises constitutional questions, as the 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms. The statement has ignited debates across political and legal circles regarding the potential implications for U.S. democracy.

Investors in Federal Government bonds subscribed to N2.83 trillion in the first quarter of 2025, a decline from the N3.12 trillion recorded in the same period of 2024, according to data from the Debt Management Office (DMO).
The drop in subscriptions followed a reduction in bond offerings, as the government sought to moderate its borrowing in response to high interest rates.
The Federal Government offered N1.10 trillion in FGN bonds in Q1 2025, significantly lower than the N3.31 trillion offered in Q1 2024. This 66.8 per cent reduction reflects a strategic shift towards issuing fewer instruments per auction while maintaining liquidity in existing bonds.
Despite the lower offer volume, total allotments stood at N1.94 trillion, down 23 per cent from N2.52 trillion in the same period of 2024.

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, Owerri, of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has vowed to suppress smuggling to it minimal level in the South Eastern part of the country.
Speaking on Monday when stakeholders from Tinaper Free Trade Zone paid him a courtesy visit in Owerri, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the unit, Bishir Balogun, who said no hiding place for smugglers in the unit, warned against the importation of prohibited items into the country.
According to the Customs boss, he is ready to carry out his mandate of suppressing smuggling to its minimal level as well as blockade revenue leakages and generating revenue.
He, however, vowed that his unit would make life unbearable for unrepentant smugglers, stressing that any attempt to violate the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Act, 2023 would be met with total resistance.
While commending the stakeholders for their efforts in generating revenue for the service and Nigeria at large, he reinstated that smugglers will have no hiding place.
“It is an economic sabotage for anyone to bring in prohibited goods into the country, especially those that are produced locally; such act runs counter to the government’s policy of revitalizing local firms and provision of employment opportunities to the youths.
“Importers, as well as exporters, must endeavour to be conversant with items on the prohibition list as well as those allowed for
importation into the country. This will be one way of not falling on the wrong side of the import guidelines,” he warned Compt. Balogun also reiterated that with the security situation around the globe, there were concerted efforts to nip the smuggling of small arms and light weapons in the bud.
According to him, the service is not unaware of the incidence of illegal importation of drugs, including tramadol and cannabis sativa, among others, which is injurious to the lives of the youths.
He further noted that his Unit has designed intelligence-driven strategies to nab those who engage in smuggling across his operational jurisdiction.
“The Unit will build on the legacies of the Comptroller General, Adewale Adeniyi, by sustaining the three major mandates of the service as regards plugging revenue leakages, enforcement and facilitation of legitimate trade into the country.”
Compt. Balogun further charged his workforce to increase the tempo of their operations, saying there would be no room for indiscipline.
“You need to redouble your effort to meet the expectations of the Comptroller General, who has provided the needed logistics for the Unit to work and excel. Also, operational strategies will be constantly reworked in a bid to take steps ahead of economic saboteurs towards defeating the game of concealment, false declaration, underpayment of duty and importation of illicit drugs. As we battle with smugglers, our eagle eyes will not be letting go of duty evasion, too,” he added.

Business experts have underscored the importance of stewardship in ensuring the sustainability and success of family businesses across multiple generations.
By adopting a stewardship mindset, family business leaders can prioritize long-term growth, foster a culture of responsibility, and safeguard their legacy for years to come.
These experts stated this at the Lagos Business School (LBS) International Family Business Conference with the theme; ‘Preparing the Next Generation for Stewardship: Building a Lasting Legacy for Family Businesses’ held recently ay in Lagos.
The experts highlighted the need to build resilient governance structures, foster intergenerational collaboration, and prepare future leaders to uphold and expand their family business vision.
Co-founder of Tengen Family Office, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, stated the importance of balancing family values with business growth to ensure a lasting legacy.
Aig-Imoukhuede who is also the chairman of Access Holdings Plc said, family-owned businesses accounted for 60 to 80 per cent of private businesses worldwide.
He, however, noted that, in Africa, weak succession planning and governance frameworks meant that family businesses rarely survived generation one.
He said, the concept of stewardship, a leadership philosophy, placed family members as enterprise caretakers focused on preserving growth for future generations.
According to him, stewardship nurtures successors, preserving them for strategic, tactical, and
operational responsibilities while preserving family relationships.
Dean, LBS, Prof. Yinka DavidWest said, family businesses were not just enterprises, but living legacies as backbones of economies, custodians of tradition, and innovation pioneers.
She noted that, sustaining a family business across generations was one of the most significant leadership challenges, saying that while many first-generation businesses thrived, fewer survived into the second, and only a fraction made it to the third.
David-West stated that, “we are committed to equipping next-generation leaders with the mindset and skills to lead with heritage and innovation. This event would also bridge the gap between tradition and transformation, ensuring family businesses remain competitive, cohesive, and futureready.”
Director, LBS Family Business Initiative, Dr Okey Nwuke, highlighted some of the challenges of family businesses in Nigeria which include inability to survive beyond the first generation due to lack of proper stewardship to foster healthy succession.
Founder of Coscharis Motors, Dr Cosmas Maduka, disclosed that, in family business succession, the child with the most burning desire for the business with the proper structure in place should be one to take the baton of leadership.
Partner, Aluko and Oyebode, Mrs Adeolu Idowu, urged business owners to employ the services of business advisors to provide an evaluation on risk and family governance in the business.
Founder of Periwinkle Residences Limited, Dr Chiedu Nwuke, added that, the most important focus must be on brand creation and passing the vision of the brand across generations.
Ahead of the planned visit of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to her hometown in Okene, the Kogi State Government has issued a restriction on “unauthorized movement” and demanded that any convoy of persons coming into the state must obtain permit from law enforcement agencies.
Akpoti-Uduaghan is scheduled to visit her senatorial district on Tuesday, the first visit since her suspension from the Senate.
It is also the first since some constituents initiated her recall.
A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said the government’s decision was based on credible intelligence that required proactive measures be taken to avert a security breach
The government particularly referred to Kogi Central Senatorial District, where the senator hails from, saying there were suspicions of a security breach.
The statement said: “In Kogi Central, intelligence at our disposal point to the fact that some elements are planning to stage some violent rallies in the guise of political and religious agitations.
“This is to create a platform for wanton destruction and breakdown of law and order.”
The statement by Fanwo reads in full: “The Kogi State Government remains unwavering in its commitment to protecting the lives and property of all residents and ensuring that the state remains a haven of peace and security. In light of credible intelligence reports, the government has deemed it necessary to take
proactive measures to prevent any form of security breach that could destabilize the state.
“It is heartwarming to note that the State witnessed a peaceful Sallah, however, some security threats are threatening the peace of the state. In Kasemiya, Katubo and Umozu Ette all in Kogi Local Government Area of Kogi West, fishing activities have resulted in serious crisis, leading to the loss of two lives.
“All fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area are hereby suspended until peace is completely restored. Security operatives have been deployed to the affected areas to restore peace and implement our directive.
“Also, in Ankpa Local Government Area, specifically in Enjema District, a communal clash between Ika-Odele and Ika-Ochala is threatening the peace of Kogi East. The State Government has deployed security to also calm the situation to avert further loss of lives and property. The ongoing peace meeting between the two communities as facilitated by the State Government must be sustained.
“In Kogi Central, intelligence at our disposal point to the fact that some elements are planning to stage some violent rallies in the guise of political and religious agitations. This is to create a platform for wanton destruction and breakdown of law and order.
“These flashes of disturbances are raising tension in the state and threatening to breach public peace and security. In view of this, and effective immediately, the Kogi State Government has placed a total ban on all forms of rallies or public gatherings that have the potential to disrupt public peace.
“This decision has been necessitated by
intelligence reports indicating that certain individuals are plotting to infiltrate the state under the guise of organizing rallies, using fake security personnel to foment trouble and compromise the security of law-abiding citizens of our dear state.
“While the government recognizes the constitutional rights of citizens to gather and express themselves, security considerations must take precedence in the interest of public safety. As such, no individual, group, or organization is permitted to hold any form of rally within the state until further notice.
“In a swift proactive move, the Chief Servant of Kogi State, His Excellency Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo has today met with the leadership of the Kogi State Traditional Council led by the Attah of Igala, Matthew Opaluwa Alaji, to agree on the modalities for ensuring peace and security in the State. The Royal Fathers also commended the Chief Servant of the State for his proactive measures to protect lives and property
“In furtherance of its commitment to maintaining law and order, the Kogi State Government has directed that any individual or group entering the state with a convoy of security personnel must obtain prior clearance from state commands of the deploying services. This measure is to ensure proper profiling and verification of all security operatives accompanying such convoys.
“The State Government has received intelligence indicating attempts by some individuals to enter Kogi State under the pretence of being security personnel, with the intention of causing unrest. This directive, therefore, is aimed at preventing any unauthorized movement of armed individuals
and ensuring that only duly accredited security agents operate within the state.
“The Chief Servant of the State, His Excellency Alh Ahmed Usman Ododo has also directed all the Local Government Chairmen to take charge of security in their domains. He also urged community leaders and opinion moulders to talk to their people on the need to sustain the relative peace in the state and back the State Government to continue to deliver democracy dividends to the great people of Kogi State.
“To guarantee the full implementation of these measures, His Excellency, the Chief Servant of Kogi State, has directed the State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Retd), to work closely with all security agencies in the state to ensure strict enforcement. Security agencies have been placed on high alert and will take all necessary steps to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“The Kogi State Government urges all residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies. The safety and well-being of the people remain the government’s top priority, and any attempt to undermine the peace and stability of the state will be met with the full force of the law.
“Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or movements to the appropriate security authorities. The government assures all residents that these measures are temporary and necessary for the greater good of all. Together, we can continue to build a safer and more secure Kogi State.”
Lagos landfills to generate $2.5bn annually from circular economy
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has revealed that, the state has the potential to generate up to $2.5 billion annually from a wellstructured circular economy.
The managing director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. This is as the MD of LAWMA calls for a sustainable recycling ecosystem to improve revenue streams with environmental benefits.
He emphasised the economic and environmental benefits of transitioning from a linear waste management model to a circular economy, where materials are reused and recycled to minimize waste.
From landfills to economic value, Gbadegesin stated that Lagos currently transports about 13,000 tonnes of waste daily to landfills under the traditional linear model. However, he noted that adopting a circular economy could divert up to 10,000 tonnes of waste daily into productive uses, unlocking significant economic value.
“We were used to the linear model where waste is collected, dumped, and buried. Now, we are introducing a circular economy where waste has value. About 90% of our waste still has economic potential if properly sorted,” he explained. To achieve this, LAWMA is pushing for waste sorting at the source, alongside the establishment of community
recycling centers. These hubs will allow residents to exchange recyclable materials—such as PET bottles, paper, metals, and food waste—for incentives, creating a sustainable recycling ecosystem.
“We need massive public sensitization and advocacy to drive this change. People must begin to sort waste at home, and we must have structured collection points where off-takers can process these materials,” Gbadegesin added.
The LAWMA boss noted that the agency is working with sister organizations to ensure the success of the initiative. While progress is being made, he admitted that more awareness is needed to highlight the economic and environmental benefits
of a circular economy in Lagos. With proper implementation, Lagos could transform its waste management system, turning trash into a $2.5 billion annual revenue stream while promoting sustainability.
Also, industry players under the aegis of Lagos Recyclers Association (LAGRA) had declared that Nigeria has been missing out on opportunities in the global circular market due to its inability to harness its potential.
According to the President of LAGRA, Femi Idowu-Adegoke, the circular economy with a market value of about $10 billion could add to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth if well harnessed and Nigerians start to reuse and recycle their waste products.

The Association of Mobile Communication Device
Technicians of Nigeria (AMCODET) has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to mandate mobile phone registration at the point of purchase to curb theft and enhance security in the country’s mobile device market.
AMCODET President, Mr
Kehinde Apara, made the appeal in Lagos, stressing that compulsory registration would make it harder for criminals to sell stolen phones, ultimately reducing theft.
He added that the measure would also prevent the wrongful harassment of phone repair technicians, who are often accused of dealing in stolen devices.
According to Apara, many of his members have been unfairly
targeted by security agencies because customers unknowingly bring stolen phones for repairs.
He believes a registration system would create a clear ownership trail, ensuring that only legitimate users have access to mobile devices.
Apara also noted that AMCODET was instrumental in introducing the NIN-SIM linkage initiative to improve mobile security. However, he argued that linking SIM cards to National
Identification Numbers (NIN) is not enough to address the rising cases of phone theft.
Beyond security concerns, AMCODET urged greater private sector support for Nigeria’s mobile phone industry, arguing that with the right investments, the country has the potential to develop its own mobile technology and reduce reliance on imported devices.

Vehicle ownership has been out of reach for many Nigerians due to high costs and limited financing options. Recently, CREDICORP, in collaboration with Autochek, initiated a nationwide rollout of its second auto financing programme, delivering cars to a new wave of beneficiaries at a Handover Event in Abuja.
This marks a major step in expanding access to vehicle ownership. Owning a car is more than just a convenience—it’s a gateway to economic opportunity, independence, and higher quality of life.
Recall that CREDICORP has been providing highly discounted credit for brand-new locally-assembled vehicles of all types, through its Project S.C.A.L.E. (Securing Consumer Access for Local Enterprises) initiative. This will continue and remain highly
discounted to support local industry. However, the reality is that most Nigerians can only afford to purchase used cars.
Recognizing this, CREDICORP has expanded its credit access to pre-owned cars through this partnership with Autochek, ensuring that more Nigerians can own cars with credit tailored to their financial realities.
The uptake of CREDICORP’s pre-owned vehicle financing initiative has been overwhelming since the offer opened on March 1, 2025. So far, thousands of applications have been received from across Nigeria; the first 205 applicants successful through credit checks by the participating financial institutions are receiving their vehicles. Today marks a significant milestone in CREDICORP’s commitment to expanding access to consumer credit for vehicle ownership. The wave of beneficiaries continues.
For many of the new car owners, this program
is more than just a means of transportation— it’s a life-changing opportunity. Amaka Okafor, a schoolteacher in Abuja, had relied on public transport for years, often struggling with long commute times and unreliable service.
“This car is more than just a vehicle to me—it’s freedom. I no longer have to worry about getting to school late or standing for hours waiting for a bus. I can now focus on my work and spend more time with my family,” she said, her voice filled with emotion. Many other beneficiaries at the event echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing how access to credit is making mobility a reality for everyday Nigerians.
As part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) was established in April 2024 to drive economic inclusion and expand access to consumer credit for Nigerians.
CREDICORP achieves its mandate through three
key pillars: first, infrastructure (by strengthening Nigeria’s consumer credit infrastructure, ensuring that every economically active citizen has a comprehensive credit score). Second, capital (by providing wholesale funding and credit guarantees to financial institutions committed to expanding consumer credit access). Lastly, by driving a cultural re-orientation—educating the public on responsible consumer credit and equipping institutions with more effective consumer credit underwriting strategies. All this is to expand access to consumer credit to 50% of Nigeria’s working population by 2030. With more than 10,000 vehicles set to be financed in the coming months, CREDICORP is not just enabling car ownership—it is unlocking better lives for Nigerians across the country.

proactive steps to promote and preserve the cultural values of the Benue people from total extinction.

He disclosed that one of the key efforts made by administration is the establishment and revamping of cultural festivities in different parts of the state where traditional dances, music, and art are showcased.
“These cultural centers serve as hubs for showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage of the Benue people and provide a platform for local artists and performers to display their talents”.
He said the administration has encouraged the teaching of indigenous languages in schools
across the state to ensure that younger generations have the opportunity to learn and appreciate the languages spoken by their ancestors.

He described Master Mfater Kaha as one of the very few talented folk singers who has used his songs to promote his administration and it’s policies. He urged youths in the state to think outside the box by emulating the initiative of El-Stuffy by setting up business ventures that will secure their future beyond the life span of the present administration.
He expressed the optimism that such investments would attract extra income to them instead of looking up to people in government for assistance and waiting for white collar jobs. Napoli stayed on the heels of Serie A leaders Inter Milan on Sunday after beating AC Milan 2-1 to remain three points off
the pace in the Scudetto race. Antonio Conte’s side were ahead with a minute on the clock through Matteo Politano’s thumping low finish, and once Romelu Lukaku scuffed in his 400th career goal in the 19th minute the hosts had a big enough cushion to claim the three points. Sunday’s win was huge for Napoli as next week’s fixture at fourth-placed Bologna is the only one of their final eight
league matches to be against a team in the top half of the division.
And unlike Inter, who squeezed past Udinese 2-1 earlier on Sunday, Napoli have no European or Italian Cup commitments and can focus exclusively on trying to win their second league crown in three seasons.
Manchester City came from behind to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for a record seventh consecutive season with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday, but victory came at a
cost as Erling Haaland hobbled off injured. Haaland had seen a first-half penalty saved before Evanilson put the Cherries in front. The Norwegian made amends by equalising four
minutes into the second period before being forced off with an ankle injury. His replacement, Omar Marmoush, took just two minutes to score the winner from a second assist by the
impressive Nico O’Reilly as City booked a semi-final clash against Nottingham Forest.
“Seven times in a row reaching semi-finals in the FA Cup...this is outstanding. This generation

It is imperative that we pursue accountability for those who perpetrate violence against journalists. Only through dedicated and persistent endeavours can we truly honour the legacy of our fallen colleagues, ensuring their sacrifices serve a meaningful purpose. The Nigeria Union of Journalists must resolutely uphold its mission to defend journalists and champion the fundamental principles of a free and independent press.
Let us unite, inspired by their fortitude, as we strive towards a future where equity prevails and truth is vigorously protected. As we mark this pivotal milestone in the NUJ’s history, let it serve as a rallying call for all stakeholders in Nigeria— journalists, media organisations, civil society, and the government— to pledge to safeguard journalists’ rights, ensure their safety, and foster an environment conducive to free expression and responsible reporting. Through concerted action, we can pave the way for a more just and equitable Nigeria, where the pursuit of truth is recognised as a fundamental right for all citizens. This is a salute to men and women of courage.
