Heavy gun fire as soldiers, Shi’ttes clash in Abuja

Several gun shots rang out from different areas of Wuse II - a burstling metropolitan district in Abuja Friday as soldiers clashed with shiitees leading to panic in some parts of the territory. An eye witness who spoke on the basis of anonymity confided in Saturday Times that members of the Islamic group were protesting in support of Palestinians in the Middle East. Events turned violent as the protesters were

said to have shot at soldiers on sighting them. The latter retaliated leading to chaos and panic among residents and motorists Saturday Times recalls that shortly before the confrontation, the US Embassy had issued an advisory - cautioning that demonstrations from the Shia Muslims could lead to disruptions in parts of the city. The memo alerted; “The Islamic Movement of Nigeria has called for demonstrations in Abuja and other major cities on Friday, March 28, 2025. Heavy traffic and

other disruptions are possible. Based on past occurrences, protests may involve roadblocks, checkpoints, traffic congestion, and physical confrontations.”

CP-PDP to Ibas: Steer clear of Rivers allocation, to petition UN, others

The Conference of Professionals in the Peoples Democratic Party (CP-PDP) has cautioned Vice-Admiral IbokEte Ibas (rtd) to steer clear of the statutory allocation and all other funds accruable or released to Rivers State.

In a statement on Friday by Barr. Obinna Nwachukwu, Protem National Coordinator CP-PDP, the body after its strategy meeting Friday asked Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) to note that “no provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) grants him the power under any circumstance whatsoever to appropriate or disburse allocation or any fund accruable to Rivers State.”

The Conference draws the attention of Vice-Admiral IbokEte Ibas (retd) to the express provision of Section 120 (3) (4) of the 1999 Constitution which provides that; (3) No money shall be withdrawn from any public fund of the State, other than the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the State, unless the issue of these moneys has been authorized by a law of the House of Assembly of the State” Sub- section 4 says “No money shall be withdrawn from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the State of any other public Fund of the State except in the manner Prescribed by the House of Assembly”.

In addition, the Conference said “Section 121 (1) of the 1999 Constitution is clear in empowering only the democratically elected Governor of the State to prepare and lay the State’s revenue and expenditure estimates before the State House of Assembly for appropriation and authorization for spending.

“Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) should note that his appointment by President Tinubu as Sole Administrator of Rivers State even with the endorsement of the National Assembly, remains illegal as it is completely inconsistent with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, with specific reference to Section 5(2) which

provides that the executive powers of a State shall be vested only in the democratically elected governor of the State.

“Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) is particularly referred to Section 1(3) of the 1999 Constitution which provides that “if any other law is inconsistent with the provisions of this constitution, this Constitution shall prevail and that other law, to the extent of the inconsistency be void”. The endorsement of his appointment by the National Assembly is therefore void not being consistent with the provision of the 1999 Constitution (as amended)”.

Consequently, the CP-PDP put the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on

notice regarding “any withdrawal and spending of Rivers State public funds by Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) for further action in the interest of the people of Rivers State.”

It said that it’s Foreign Affairs experts “will be petitioning international bodies for appropriate sanctions including Visa ban for individuals and the families of individuals involved in undermining democracy in Nigeria, particularly in Rivers State.”

The CP-PDP commended the courage of the state governors elected on the platform of the PDP in approaching the Supreme Court on the matter of Rivers State in the efforts to preserve democracy in the country.

Kano Already Secured For APC Ahead Of 2027, Says Akpabio

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has expressed confidence that Kano State remains a stronghold for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He attributed this to the strategic influence of Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and Special adviser the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado.

Speaking during a visit to the Special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on National Assembly (Senate Matters), Senator Lado in his office at the National Assembly, Senator Akpabio commended him for ensuring seamless and confidential communication between the Executive and the Senate, describing his performance as unprecedented.

“With the Deputy Senate President, the National Chairman of APC, and your strategic influence, Kano is already secured for the APC ahead of 2027,” Akpabio said.

According to him, “since Senator Lado assumed office, there has not been a single leakage of private communication between the Presidency and the Senate”.

He underscored the significance of maintaining confidentiality in governance, warning that leaks could negatively impact national security and decision-making.

“In government, information security is crucial. Where official business is conducted on the pages of newspapers and social

media due to leaks, it undermines national security. I commend you for upholding the integrity of this office and ensuring effective governance,” he said.

He also acknowledged Lado’s role in enhancing collaboration between the Executive and the Legislature, ensuring smoother communication and coordination.

“Your performance over the last eight months has been outstanding. You have strengthened the synergy between the Executive and the Legislature, making governance more effective”.

In response, Senator Lado expressed gratitude for Akpabio’s leadership, emphasizing his role in fostering cooperation between the Executive and the Legislature. He described the Senate President as a statesman who prioritizes unity and national progress.

“Mr. Senate President, your presence here is a testament to the harmony between the Executive and the Legislature. It reflects a shared vision and leadership anchored on service to the nation.”

Senator Lado also praised the Senate President’s unwavering support for President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, highlighting his legislative commitment to advancing key government policies.

“You have not only supported the President but have championed his renewed Hope agenda with conviction, defending it with clarity, articulating it with passion, and driving its implementation through legislative action”.

this said some of the drugs destroyed include Analgin, Tramadol, and various pediatric pharmaceuticals, which had been stored in prohibited areas or were banned by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The closure and raids of the markets where the drugs were confiscated, he said, was in response to public complaints regarding the prevalence of fake, substandard and counterfeit drugs in the South-East.

“Many of these drugs are banned, such as Analgin and certain pediatric medications, and they were stored in places that violate WHO regulations.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that these products are safe and fit for human consumption.

“These drugs were transported in a 140-foot truck, valued at over N1trillion, and were supposed to be stored at specific temperatures. However,

they were kept in markets that do not meet the required standards.

According to local sources, the demonstrators accused the LGA chairman of withholding

essential provisions meant for party members in the region. They threatened to abandon the PDP in the 2027 elections if their grievances were not addressed.

One of the protesters, Haladu Mus, voiced his dissatisfaction, saying, “Look at this tiny amount of rice and maize they’ve given us. Just two measures of rice and one measure of maize for Ja’oji polling unit. Runji polling unit

Another member, Dayyabu Ibrahim, expressed his disappointment, claiming the palliative was far from adequate. He vowed that the local party leadership would face consequences, promising that they would “see the outcome in the next election, by God’s grace.”

What policies will encourage skilled Nigerians to return?” she said.Dabiri-Erewa highlighted that in the last five years, diaspora remittances have injected about $90 billion dollars into Nigeria’s economy, yet she urged for more diaspora involvement beyond financial support, through investment, mentorship, and skills transfer.

PAP: No blackmail can erase records of Kingsley Kuku, group tells detractors

A group, the Niger Delta Youths Alliance (NDYA) has dismissed as “feeble” and “laughable” the attempts by some desperate persons sponsored to disparage the reputation of the Iconic former Special Adviser to the President of Nigeria on Niger Delta and Chairman of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Hon. Dr. Kingsley K. Kuku, popularly known as K3. According to the group, despite the futile attempts by some sponsored ex-militants and name calling against the person of Hon. Dr. Kingsley K. Kuku, it is on record that Hon. Kingsley K. Kuku (PhD) is the most successful handler of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) since

its inception. May we remind our fellow Niger Deltans and Nigerians at large that at some point between 2012 to 2015 under the leadership of K3, the PAP had over 3,000 indigent Niger Delta Youths successfully engaged in foreign universities and technical institutions across the world.

The Niger Delta Youths Alliance (NDYA), in a statement issued via electronic mail and made available to newsmen by its national coordinator, Chief Timi Amaebi, stated that, inspite of the change in the value of foreign exchange, parts of the era of Kingsley Kuku between 2012 and 2015 at the Presidential Amnesty office saw Niger Delta Youths enrolled in institutions at Cambridge, Lufthansa training, University of Vermont, University of Alabama, and other institutions

across the United States, West Indies, South America, South Africa, Ghana, Malaysia, United Kingdom, France, Jordan, Greece, Germany, Australia, and many other countries including in the best public and private institutions in Nigeria.

The group argued that “all successive administrators of the PAP have not met the standard and achievements set by Hon. Dr. Kingsley K. Kuku. He empowered thousands of Niger Delta youths, women, and children. Infact, none of the successive administrators have done even 10 percent of what K3 did at the Amnesty office. He was able to elevate the Niger Delta region and the nation by contributing to security of the nation’s wealth, boost the nation’s economy and the world at large.”

“Under the Kingsley Kuku led Presidential Amnesty, we had youths from the region living in Nigeria and abroad and receiving the best education. The nation will start hearing about hundreds of Niger Delta youths across the world within the next few years as being Pacesetters in their various fields. This is because, as a visionary leader, K3 saw the intellectual vacuum in our youths and filled it with education and intellectual empowerment.”

“Unlike the present crop at the PAP office that instigates division amongst beneficiaries and sponsors human rights violations at the most extreme levels ever known to mankind, the Kingsley Kuku strategy involved quick and proactive engagement of elders and youths to ensure peace across the region.”

“But now, a divided Amnesty beneficiaries have become tools in the hands of sponsors of violence and name calling because of stipends. They have become tools that support the ongoing flagrant abuse of human rights and illegal arrest of those against their style.”

The group insisted that Kingsley Kuku, a true son of the Niger Delta region, “will forever be remembered for his unapparelled legacy by thousands of Amnesty beneficiaries and youths and elders across the Niger Delta region for assisting them to earn a quality education and living successfully with their married partners around the world.”

“K3 will forever remain as a man of the people, and the Presidency if properly advised,

and in the interest of the nation, should be putting up with an exemplary individual like Hon. Dr. Kingsley K. Kuku in charge of an Ambassadorial role to work with the people of the region and beyond on research and technical approaches to peace and security in order to boost the economy of the region and the nation.”

“No amount of blackmail and name calling can ever erase the history and achievements during K3’s era as the Presidential Amnesty boss. It is completely up to this present federal government to either regard or disregard the Iconic standards and achievements of Hon. Dr. Kingsley K. Kuku. He has dedicated himself to be a peace advocate and statesmanship for betterment of the people of Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.”

Kano court sentences housewife to death for kidnapping, killing eight-year-old girl

A Kano State High Court on Friday sentenced Fadila Adamu, a housewife, to death by hanging after finding her guilty of kidnapping an eight-year-old girl and subsequently causing the child’s death by throwing her into a well.

The court convicted Adamu, a resident of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters in Kano, on charges of kidnapping and culpable homicide.

Justice Yusuf Muhammad-

Ubale, who delivered the verdict, stated that the prosecution had successfully proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“I hereby sentence the defendant to death by hanging for kidnapping and throwing the victim into a well, resulting in her death,” Justice MuhammadUbale declared.

The prosecution, led by counsel Lamido AbbaSorondinki, explained that the crime took place on July 14, 2019, at Tudun Wada Quarters in Kano. At approximately 4:45 p.m.,

Adamu abducted the young girl and took her to her home.

Abba-Sorondinki revealed that the defendant had told her sister that the deceased was the daughter of a friend who had traveled to Ghana and asked her to keep the child until the mother returned.

However, on July 17, 2019, at about 6:30 p.m., Adamu threw the girl into a deep well in Tukuntawa Quarters, Kano, leading to her death.

The prosecution presented a total of seven witnesses,

including the defendant’s statements and a medical report confirming the victim’s death. Despite the evidence, Adamu denied the charges.

The court found the defendant’s actions to be in violation of Sections 274(b) and 221(a) of the Penal Code, which relate to kidnapping and culpable homicide.

In defense, Adamu’s counsel, Zulaihat Tata, called four witnesses, including the defendant, to testify on her behalf.

Pray for Tinubu’s leadership, Shettima urges Nigerians at close of Tafsir

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerians to continue to pray for the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, as well as for peace, stability, and progress in Nigeria as the Ramadan period comes to a close.

Specifically, the Vice President sought prayers for God to continue to grant the President wisdom and strength to pilot the affairs of the country toward peace, unity, and prosperity.

Shettima, who made the call on Friday during the closing ceremony of Tafsir (reading of the Quran) for the month of Ramadan at the State House Mosque in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, noted that prayer remains the fortress of the believer, the sanctuary where hopes

are nurtured and destinies are shaped.

“It is our greatest weapon against despair and the most powerful armor for those entrusted with leadership. In this spirit, I urge us all to continue praying for our beloved nation and the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“May Almighty Allah grant him the wisdom, strength, and resolve to continue steering the ship of our great nation toward peace, unity, and prosperity.

May He protect him from harm, fortify his heart with courage, and guide his every effort in service to the Nigerian people,” he said.

The Vice President reminded the gathering that governance is a collective responsibility,

not solely the burden of the government. He maintained that “our religious leaders, whose voices echo the moral conscience of our society, play an indispensable role in shaping our values and guiding our hearts.

“Their service reminds us of the ideals that must define us: integrity, justice, and an unyielding commitment to the welfare of others. To them, we owe our deepest gratitude.”

Shettima enjoined Muslim faithful to always embody the values of Ramadan, including sacrifice, discipline, and love in their daily lives. He emphasized that as they prepare to bid farewell to the holy month, they must not forget its essence.

He continued: “The days of devotion, self-restraint, and

reflection must not be confined to Ramadan alone; rather, they must illuminate the path we walk every day. Fasting has not only taught us sacrifice and discipline; it has also awakened in us a profound sense of empathy. It has reminded us of the struggles of the less privileged, the hunger of the destitute, and the responsibilities we bear toward those in need.

“But as Ramadan draws to a close, we must ask ourselves: What have we truly gained if we revert to old habits of neglect, indifference, and discord? The true test of faith is not how we worship during Ramadan, but how we embody its values afterward.

Barely three weeks after the former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the North-West zone of the party said El-Rufai is not their member.

The North West Assistant Secretary, Idris Inuwa, who asserted in a statement in Kaduna, said the ward and state chapter of SDP has no membership record of El-Rufai.

“It has come to our notice that certain individuals, including Nasir El-Rufai, are being rumoured to have joined the SDP. However, neither the chairman of Kaduna North Local Government in Kaduna State nor the leadership of Unguwar Sarki ward has any record of these memberships,” he stated.

Inuwa, therefore, urged El-Rufai and other prospective members to adhere to the proper membership process of joining the SDP.

“We advise him and any other interested individuals to follow the proper procedures if they wish to officially become members of the party.

The North-West Zonal Assistant

Secretary also kicked against the dissolution of the Kaduna State working committee of the SDP by the party’s National working committee.

“While we recognize the growing interest of individuals and groups in joining the SDP, we emphasise that there are well-defined guidelines and constitutional provisions governing membership admission. Kaduna State chapter of SDP remains open and welcomes all prospective members who adhere to established procedures.”

It would be recalled that El-Rufai had on March 10, 2025, resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress and defected to the Social Democratic Party.

Na your mama: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu reacts to nursing students’ diss song

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has called on the management of Delta State College of Nursing Services, Agbor, Delta state to be fair in handling the purported query issued to some student nurses over their diss song during her visit.

Busola Kukoyi, the Senior Special Assistant

on Media to the First Lady in a statement issued on Friday, March 28, said it is important for the institution’s management to treat the issue with fairness and understanding.

Kukoyi’s statement follows report that the management of the school had issued a query to the student who posted the viral video which

captured her colleagues mocking the First Lady on social media.

Recall that on March 25, the First Lady had visited the institution for the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and the distribution of 10,000 Professional Kits (Crocs and Scrubs) to Midwives in the South South region.

At the event, the Master of Ceremony led the students in a welcome song for the First lady.

The MC sang, “Na our mama be this o, we no get any other mama” in expectation of a “Na our mama be this ooo!” response from the students.

The students rather than giving the MC the expected response, sang, “Na your (the MC’s) mama be this oo!”.

The action of the students has led to controversial discuss with many condemning their response to the MC’s song while others hailed them for being bold.

In her reaction, Kukoyi said while the Office of the First Lady respects the right of institutions to uphold discipline of students, there is need to understand that the students were also in their moment of excitement during Oluremi Tinubu’s visit.

“The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria respects the right of institutions to uphold discipline. However, it is important to recognize that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a light-hearted and jovial manner,” Kukoyi said.

She encouraged institutions to understand the importance of creating environment that fosters both discipline and freedom of expression in places of learning.

“Educational institutions should be places where students feel safe to express themselves while maintaining decorum,” she said.

The Oyo State government, has welcomed a group of students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA as part of a cultural exchange and tourism initiative.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun, received the visiting students, introducing them to Oyo State’s rich cultural heritage, including its numerous festivals and historical landmarks.

Olatunbosun also mentioned the state’s recent policy promoting cultural identity by encouraging the wearing of native attire, particularly Aso-Oke,

every Thursday.

“This initiative aims to boost local businesses and preserve the Yoruba tradition. Among the key sites the students planned to visit was Bower’s Tower in Ibadan, a historic monument with 60 spiral steps that offers a panoramic view of the city.

“Oyo State is known for its hospitality, and under the leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the state continues to create a conducive environment for tourism through improved security, infrastructure, and governance,” he said in a statement on Friday.

2027: HURIWA chides Akpabio, Others over early campaign

Civil rights advocacy group- Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned Senator Godswill Akpabio and political leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop playing God by distracting the flow of governance with early campaign for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 with two clear years to the poll.

HURIWA lambasted Akpabio and others thus:

“These politicians who are clinging on to power by all conceivable means and have no idea on how to bring about succour to millions of Nigerians who are drifting rapidly into Multidimensional Poverty due to poor economic planning and implementation of draconian anti-people policies such as devaluation of the Naira by letting the national currency to float freely and degenerate in value, the hike in costs of essential commodities, and the general costs of living crisis by the federal government.

“But these same over-fed, over-paid and overpampered political office holders such as governors, legislators at the National Assembly and political party stalwarts of the ruling All Progressives

Congress who have cornered juicy governing boards positions in federal agencies, are already constituting themselves into political nuisances by beginning illegally, an early public campaign to railroad president Tinubu for a second term even when he is only half way into the first tenure of 4 years.”

HURIWA recalled that the Senate president who spoke at the Iftar gathering confidently asserted that APC would retain power in 2027 and expand its control across more states.

“We will come back in 2027, in Jesus’ name, Amen,” he declared.

“We will offer prayers for our party, that yes, indeed, victory shall be ours in 2027. Can we say a loud amen! And we will also pray for Mr. President that his second term is assured. Can we shout a loud amen!,” he said

He Akpabio then called for a vote, saying, “Those in support of the motion that the APC should come back in 2027, say ‘aye,’ those against, say ‘nay’.” When the audience responded with a loud “aye,” Akpabio concluded, “The ayes have it.”

HURIWA has therefore reminded all the political jobbers who are already distracting the flow of

governance with their illegal second term campaign for president Tinubu should know that only God has the final say regarding whom amongst us would be alive the next day just as the Rights group wondered why politicians who should be focused with delivering quality services to the citizens are never ever thinking about how to better the living conditions of the citizens but are totally focused with strategies for power grab in another two years as if to say they have the power of life and death which is domiciled only with God.

HURIWA said:” Can we remind Senator Akpabio and many others about what the Senior Special Assistant on Media Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, Tunde Rahman, had revealed that the late Dr. Doyin Okupe had set up an office and assembled a team to work for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 before his passing.

Speaking at a Service of Songs held in Okupe’s honour at Trinity House, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Thursday, Rahman disclosed that Okupe took the step because he believed strongly in Tinubu’s policies and vision for Nigeria.

Rahman, who represented the president at the event, described Okupe’s death as a significant loss

Grief as late Prof. Nwosu goes home

Our Reporter

Tears freely flowed Friday as the remains of late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu were interred in his hometown, Ajalli, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Also speaking, the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, observed that Nigeria is celebrating an icon of modern democracy who contributed immensely to the nation’s development.

Otti said, “Nigeria is celebrating an icon of our democracy and that is why I came to join my brother Prof Chukwuma Soludo to honour this great Nigerian who wrote his name in the sand of time and I pray that at the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, it would be a triumph for our brother Late Prof Humphrey Nwosu.”

During his sermon at the event, the Bishop of Aguata Diocese Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Samurai Ezeofor, lamented what he described as the hopeless fate of the Nigerian nation contending that those dreams and aspirations of the country have been shattered.

“This country has also produced men and women who would have liberated Nigeria, such as the late Prof Humphrey Nwosu. But today, professors rig elections for school dropouts and drug barons, and you say that this country will be good.

“Our politicians have bastardised our university education, and they decide who will be Vice Chancellors of our Universities, and the position of Vice Chancellor has become a political appointment.

“Prof Chinua Achebe wrote a book titled there was a country but I say there is a country and in that book our brother lamented about the lost in the country and NIgeria has lost the essence of or dreams and I don’t know if the cause is from our politicians.

“Prof. Wole Soyinka at the then University of Ife lamented that his generation is a wasted generation, while late musician Sunny Okosun asked which way Nigeria’s and one wonders what he would have sung had he been that he is alive today,” the cleric stated. In his own message, Bishop Emmanuel

Chukwuma flayed Senator Adams Oshiomole over his statement during the motion for immortalization of the late sage in the Senate that the deceased annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections.

Chukwuma said; “That statement by Oshiomole is nonsensical because

Nwosu, who conducted the June 12, 1993, election annulled by former military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida, served as NEC Chairman from 1989 to 1993, was buried on Friday amid encomiums from governors and other notable dignatories.”

Speaking during the funeral, the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, said the five

governors of the South-East have resolved to meet with President Bola Tinubu to request for a befitting national honour for the deceased. Also speaking, the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, observed that Nigeria is celebrating an icon of modern democracy who contributed immensely to the nation’s development.Otti said, “Nigeria is celebrating an icon of our democracy and that is why I came to join my brother Prof Chukwuma Soludo to honour this great Nigerian who wrote his name in the sand of time and I pray that at the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, it would be a triumph for our brother Late Prof Humphrey Nwosu.”

not only to Tinubu but also to the political class and the nation at large. This revealation should tell politicians plotting to remain in power that only God has the power of life and death just as human beings lack the supernatural powers to dictate what will happen in two years’ time.

HURIWA has, therefore, called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission Professor Yakubu Mahmood to be alive to his statutory duty by warning politicians such as the Senate president Mr. Godswill Akpabio, the leaders of the All Progressives Congress and serving governors under the auspices of the All Progressives Congress to stop political campaigns for the 2027 election.

HURIWA said INEC should sanction the political parties already campaigning because the right thing to do is for politicians to await the officially approved date for the commencement of campaigns. “We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call his political team to order and warn them to stop distracting the flow of governance by inundating Nigerians with incoherent noises about the 2027 national election that is many years away.

The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was represented at the solemn event by the Minister of Works and former Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi. Other dignitaries include the Host and Governor of Anambra State, H.E. Prof. Charles Soludo Governor of Abia State; H.E. Dr. Alex Otti and Mr. Peter Obi. Former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives and former Governor of Imo State, H.E. Rt. Hon. The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Environment, Mahmud A. Kambari said Climate Change has become a critical issue, both for its global importance and threats to National development.

Kambari disclosed this in an opening remarks at the just concluded “Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation for Vulnerability Communities in SouthWest Geopolitical Zone’s worksop.

He cited example of Nigeria’s desertification process advancing southward and potential submergence of the 853 kilometers stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.

“Climate Change has become a critical issue, both for its global importance and threats to National development. For instance, we have the desertification process advancing southward and potential submergence of the 853 kilometers stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean”, he said.

He also said for these and many other reasons, “We can’t but continue to implement the Climate Change Convention, related Kyoto Protocol, the Paris Agreement and our local efforts and initiatives at combating the threats of Climate Change and global warming”.

He said Nigeria recognized, with great concern, this threat that climate change poses to livelihoods, economic sustainability, and health, and the imperative to embed climate change issues within the context of its work in the country.

“Overcoming the development challenge of climate change requires that appropriate mitigation and adaptation measures are implemented coherently and integratively, in which they are appropriately mainstreamed into national programs and projects for sustainable development.

“It also emphasizes the need for a strategic plan of action or roadmap for a national approach or response to climate change”, he noted. According to him, the Government of Nigeria regarded the challenge of climate change as inimical to its national sustainable development that must be squarely addressed.

“Thus, various national efforts have been put in place at all levels of governance to promote climateresilient environmental sustainability in the context of national development.

“These efforts range from putting policies and legislation in place to building institutional capacity, effective participation in global climate change negotiations and signing international agreements, building partnerships, sourcing funding, and embarking on some initiatives for climate change response.

“The country has built partnerships with several non-governmental actors (civil society organizations, private sector operators, and development partners) to broaden the base for tackling the menace of climate change”, he stated. Kambari added that “The Government will explicitly address climate change as part of the various

sectoral policies and management instruments that are related to this global problem”.

“Climate Change will be taken as a strategic development issue in all areas of public policy. There is no gainsaying that there will be some climate changes that cannot be avoided due to past and inevitable future global emissions, but the detrimental effects can be avoided if we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions to an acceptable level.

“Therefore, we must move beyond thinking about climate change and global warming to take action as a nation.

“Since taking actions that will alleviate the effects of climate change and a warmer world is everyone’s responsibility, we will be interacting and working with the general public, individuals, communities, businesses & industries, international partners, and the global community to create the necessary awareness in this direction.

“The Department of Climate Change has the full backing of the Ministry to drive the practical fulfillment of the Federal Government’s vision and mission for mitigating and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

“We will provide leadership in promoting the culture necessary to establish the right conditions for our people to adapt, supporting quality research, education, and awareness efforts, and enforcing industry regulations that will guide businesses and communities in adapting and mitigating climate change, while providing national policy direction in combating Climate Change.

“As committed and zealous to combating the effects of Climate Change as we may be, our efforts alone cannot give us the desired goal, until and unless the state governments share in our vision, and effective collaboration and fully partner with us in contributing their time, knowledge, resources and committed trust to support the achievement of our statutory objectives.

“I am happy to note that this workshop will be focusing on:Strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities in Nigeria to natural and man-made disasters as well as their capacity to prepare, respond to, recover from, and reduce risks associated with such disasters.

“If we can achieve the objectives of this workshop as outlined above, the issue of climate change will become increasingly popular in Nigeria. The Federal Ministry of Environment is looking forward to seeing a time when climate change will be placed on center stage and given the priority it deserves.

“To attain this level, all stakeholders need to work as one in mainstreaming it among states’ high-priority policy issues”, he explained.

He therefore urged all participants to share knowledge and experience and come up with innovative recommendations that would aid the government in taking proactive measures towards enhancing the level of managing our environment, and declare the workshop opened.

The Oyo State government has prosecuted 32 individuals for indiscriminate waste disposal, including dumping sachet water nylons, refuse, and other waste materials on road medians and unauthorised places.

The offenders were fined ₦50,000 each for violating environmental sanitation laws.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Friday, explained that the tribunal judge, Olumide Abifarin, disclosed this during a hearing held at the Ministry of Environment, and Natural Resources in Ibadan.

According to him, environmental officials arrested the offenders in March and they were charged with three offenses, viz illegal waste dumping, failure to register with accredited waste collectors and failure to provide a waste bin.

The judge said dumping refuse in unauthorised locations was punishable under Sections 74(a) and 97 of the Environmental Sanitation and Waste Control Regulations 2013.

“it is a legal requirement for all households and commercial establishments to own a waste bin and patronize an accredited wate collector,” he was quoted.

The defendants pleaded guilty and admitted that their actions were unlawful, requesting the court’s leniency.

In his ruling, Barrister Abifarin stressed that Oyo State could achieve cleanliness “comparable to Rwanda, known as one of the world’s cleanest countries.”

He reminded residents that all homes, offices, religious centers, and commercial spaces must have proper waste disposal systems and must register with licensed waste collectors.

The judge emphasised that dumping refuse in drains, rivers, roadsides, and medians, as well as burning waste and obstructing environmental officials were punishable offenses.

He, however, showed leniency by waiving penalties for the second and third charges, imposing only the ₦50,000 fine for illegal waste disposal.

He also supported me to acquire Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). He made my dream come true. I want to use this moment to appreciate him once again,” he said.

“Right from my childhood, my passion was to become a pilot, but there was no support. I started by building small aircraft. Luckily, I met with a former Special Assistant to the Governor Cute Abiola who introduced me to His Excellency, and the governor sponsored me to the International Aviation College Ilorin. Now, I am pursuing my CPL after PPL.”

Scores dead in Myanmar earthquake

Parts of Thailand’s capital were brought to a standstill Friday evening after a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in neighboring Myanmar disrupted the city’s key transport links.

Streams of stationary cars and motorbikes could be seen at the Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok after the quake caused tremors across the country, as well as in some Chinese provinces.

Though busy roads are not an uncommon sight in the Thai capital, the popular BTS Skytrain service announced on X that it was temporarily shutting down to allow for safety inspections.

“Engineers and related officials are currently inspecting the structure of the BTS Skytrain system, train operations, and running tracks along the entire route for the safety of the BTS Skytrain structure,” the service said on X.

Two lines have since resumed service, and others will open Saturday morning, the service said. One woman who lives in Bangkok said she was on the 33rd floor of her apartment building when a powerful earthquake struck neighboring Myanmar.

At first, Bella Pawita Sunthornpong thought it was a moment of lightheadedness “because I was seeing everything was swaying.

“But I was walking out to another room, and

I start seeing the lamp from the ceiling was, like, really swaying together,” she told CNN, describing the moment she realized it was an earthquake.

She grabbed her phone and started running down from the 33rd floor, telling others around her to run too. She said as she was making her way out of the building, ceiling paint was falling and everything was still swaying.

“I was thinking, you know, whatever happened, I just need to keep running until I hit the ground,” Pawita Sunthornpong said.

Also in Bangkok, which is hundreds of miles from the epicenter of the earthquake, a building that was under construction in the

city collapsed, killing several people. Pawita Sunthornpong said when she made it outside, there was a lot of fear and confusion, with people looking at her building wondering, “Is this going to crumble?”

Pawita Sunthornpong, who went to stay outside of the city, said many of her friends don’t feel safe going back to their apartments: “There’s a lot of cracks everywhere, so people are still in a little bit of fear tonight.” The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar was the most powerful the country has seen in more than 100 years.

Global Markets React to Trade Tensions and Geopolitical Developments

Global financial markets are experiencing volatility due to ongoing trade disputes and geopolitical tensions. The U.S. administration’s

proposal for a new minerals deal with Ukraine and potential auto tariffs have heightened concerns. Additionally, CoreWeave’s

underwhelming IPO and fluctuating oil prices are contributing to market instability. Investors are closely monitoring economic indicators and geopolitical events for further direction.

Benue: Ending Water Scarcity, Building Resilience, Enhancing Sanitation

Water is life, no doubt. It is essential for the living, in driving agriculture ; ensuring food security, and vital to a functional ecosystem. It is imperative for economic growth, poverty reduction, and on the top scale of improved public health.

In Benue State, there have been genuine but tottering efforts to provide potable water to citizens. Over the years, projects have been abandoned because previous administrations did not give priority to this key sector. That is why a project as important as the Otobi/ Otukpo , Katsina-Ala Water Works and the Naka Earth Dam Projects etc were abandoned for over 10 years, starving the people of the means to assuage their taste through access to potable clean water.

The abandoned Otobi/Otukpo Water Works, for instance, would have provided 15,000m3/day if its overhaul and refurbishing were completed.

The water supply source for the plant is surface water from River Otobi. The facility is crucial for providing clean water to the residents of Otukpo and surrounding areas.

The contractor handling that project, a Chinese firm, CGC, had no choice

but to pack up and leave as the then administration failed to pay for the work executed. And so it has been for 10 years, until His Excellency Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia stepped in, ordered a recall of the contractors, giving a deadline for the project’s completion, and most importantly, setting aside the funds, including the debt owed the contractors This was done on March 20, 2025, during the State Executive Council meeting. The council approved the immediate payment of N1.5 billion to CGC, the Chinese company that constructed the Otobi-Otukpo and Katsina-Ala Water Works about 10 years ago. The council also directed the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment, and Climate Change to invite CGC to commence the rehabilitation and reticulation to push water to every street and community in Otobi, Otukpo, and environs. This essential intervention will no doubt arrest the biting challenge of accessing potable clean water in the area. It is a clear demonstration of Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s unwavering commitment and desire to bring to a close the continuous spate of water challenge being faced by Otukpo

residents and Benue State at large.

In addition plans are underway for the resuscitation of the PCI- Otukpo Water Plant for full water supply in Otukpo.

In a warm assurance, His Excellency, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode said other communities in Benue State facing water challenges will get similar intervention of the state government as soon as possible.

Of course, there have been other interventions in the area of water supply to enhance hygiene and sanitation across the state.

In the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) , work is in progress under the supervision of Dr Stephen Terungwa Hwande for the Construction of a multi million naira Water Works Plant.

The Governor’s commitment to improving the hospital infrastructure reflects his dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery in Benue State, The completion of the water works plant is expected to significantly improve water supply within the hospital, ensuring that both patients and staff have reliable access to clean water.

Meanwhile the rearticulated water system project from BSU and two Water

Treatment units in the BSUTH have been completed all to enhance effective service delivery for doctors, patients and other workers/staff.

Also, Benue state government, in collaboration with UNICEF, had implemented water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in selected local government areas. The government released N700 million for the projects, which involved the drilling of boreholes and toilets to address open defecation.

Some of the beneficiaries include Ugbokpo in Apa local government, Ogbodo-Iyeche, Oju, and Ihugh in Vandeikya, Mbagwa community in Ushongo, and Adi-Etulo in Buruku, and Ugbor, Gwer East local government areas all from the 3 senatorial district of the state.

According to the Commissioner of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Ugwu Odoh, on an inspection tour in the 3 Senatorial Zones of the State said the target of government is for the state to attain open defecation free status. So far, 11 LGAs have attained the ODF status.

Odoh commended the quality of work done and urged the benefiting communities to take ownership of the

projects and protect it from vandals. The resounding message is that Governor Alia has been fulfilling his campaign promises of prioritizing the needs of the people of Benue State.

The beneficiaries have been full of praises for the Governor’s intervention, for assuaging their taste, enhancing their livelihoods, and making life better for all.

In Apa local government area, the council chairman, Comrade Adam Ochega Ogwola expressed gratitude to the state government for selecting the council area to benefit from the intervention, while a community leader in Ogbodo-Iyeche, Ukpe Omoga recounted the difficulties faced by the community due to water scarcity before the intervention by the government and expressed appreciation to Governor Alia for bringing succor to them.

For the General Manager of Benue State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, Tony Mkpen, their pledge to the people of Benue State is that they will not relent until every village has access to clean, safe and potable water.

As Benue State launches a new Agricultural era: the dawn of the livestock revolution!

Professor Qrissturberg Amua, PhD

In a significant moment for agriculture in Benue State, the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alh. Idi Mukhtar Maiha, recently embarked on a landmark facility tour of the Benue State Swine/Crop Improvement Project (BSCIP) in Yandev, located in the Gboko Local Government Area.

This event is not merely a routine inspection; it symbolizes a profound commitment to advancing food security, fostering economic prosperity, and achieving agricultural excellence within the region. As the Minister toured the facilities, he emphasized the importance of this initiative in reshaping the future of livestock and crop production in Benue State, a region known for its agricultural potential.

During the tour, the Honourable Minister made a pivotal announcement regarding a substantial intervention package aimed at scaling up the swine and crop improvement scheme. This package is expected to create new opportunities for a wide array of stakeholders, including farmers, agripreneurs, and investors. The revitalization of the BSCIP is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for innovation and growth within the agricultural sector, ultimately leading to enhanced productivity and sustainability.

This unprecedented milestone in

Benue State’s agricultural landscape would not have been possible without the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia. His unwavering commitment to agricultural revitalization has set the stage for a transformative journey toward sustainable prosperity. Under his guidance, the BSCIP has emerged as a beacon of hope not just for farmers but for all agribusiness stakeholders across Benue State and indeed, Nigeria. His dedication to improving agricultural practices is a testament to his understanding of the critical role that agriculture plays in the economic and social fabric of the region.

The BSCIP is designed to enhance both swine and crop production, leveraging modern techniques and practices to improve yields and quality. By focusing on the integration of livestock and crop production, the project aims to create a more sustainable agricultural system that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change and market fluctuations. The emphasis on swine production is particularly noteworthy, as it aligns with global trends toward increasing protein consumption and the demand for highquality meat products.

Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, the DirectorGeneral of the Bureau of Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control, has

played a crucial role in facilitating this transformation. His exemplary foresight in organizing the first-ever Benue State Livestock Summit and coordinating the Minister’s impactful facility tour has positioned him as a key figure in the advancement of livestock development in the region. Through his efforts, the summit provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss pressing issues, share knowledge, and explore collaborative opportunities that can drive the livestock sector forward.

The significance of the livestock summit cannot be overstated. It brought together farmers, researchers, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss best practices, innovations, and strategies for overcoming the challenges that the sector faces. The exchange of ideas and experiences among participants is expected to lead to actionable solutions that can enhance productivity and sustainability in livestock farming. The summit also highlighted the importance of addressing transboundary animal diseases, which pose a significant threat to livestock health and productivity. Effective disease control measures are essential for ensuring that farmers can maintain healthy herds and minimize economic losses.

The commitment to livestock development in Benue State is not just

about increasing production; it is also about enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and communities. By creating new opportunities for agripreneurs and investors, the BSCIP aims to stimulate local economies and foster job creation. The ripple effects of this initiative could lead to improved food security and better nutritional outcomes for the population, as increased production can help meet the growing demand for meat and other agricultural products. Moreover, the focus on sustainable practices within the BSCIP aligns with global efforts to promote environmentally friendly agriculture. By integrating crop and livestock production, the project seeks to optimize resource use, reduce waste, and minimize the environmental impact of farming activities. This holistic approach not only benefits farmers but also contributes to the overall health of the ecosystem, ensuring that future generations can continue to rely on agriculture for their livelihoods.

As Benue State embarks on this transformative journey, the engagement of all stakeholders is crucial. Farmers, researchers, government officials, and private sector players must collaborate to ensure the success of the BSCIP and the broader livestock revolution. Training programs, access to financing, and the adoption of innovative technologies will

be essential components in empowering farmers to embrace new practices and maximize their potential.

The future of agriculture in Benue State is undoubtedly bright, and the initiatives being undertaken today will lay the groundwork for a more prosperous tomorrow. The commitment to livestock and crop improvement, coupled with visionary leadership, is steering the region toward a new era of agricultural excellence. As the BSCIP takes shape, it is expected to serve as a model for other states in Nigeria, demonstrating the potential for agricultural transformation through strategic interventions and collaborative efforts.

In conclusion, Benue State is on the cusp of a livestock revolution that promises to reshape its agricultural landscape. The commitment of leaders like Alh. Idi Mukhtar Maiha and Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, along with the dedication of stakeholders like Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, highlights the collective effort required to drive this transformation. As the BSCIP continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly create new opportunities, enhance food security, and contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture in Benue State and beyond. The transformation has only just begun, and the potential for growth and innovation is limitless.

Zenith Bank Plc has posted a historic profit after tax of N1.03 trillion for the 2024 financial year, setting a new benchmark in Nigeria’s banking industry.

This represents a 52.5 per cent increase from the N676.9 billion recorded in 2023, reflecting the bank’s resilience, strategic growth initiatives, and dominance in an evolving financial landscape.

The bank’s pre-tax profit also surged to an unprecedented N1.32 trillion, a 66.6 per cent rise from the previous year, driven by significant growth in interest income, trading revenues, and commission-based earnings.

Gross earnings soared by 86 per cent to N3.97 trillion, with interest income alone contributing N2.72 trillion, marking a remarkable 138 per cent year-on-year growth.

This was largely attributed to strategic investments in risk-free government securities, higher loan book expansion, and a favourable high-interest-rate environment.

Zenith Bank’s trading business delivered a record-breaking N1.1 trillion in earnings,

nearly doubling its previous year’s performance. Non-interest income also witnessed substantial growth, with net fees and commission income climbing to N206.8 billion, boosted by increased electronic banking transactions, account maintenance charges, and foreign withdrawal fees.

The bank’s total assets expanded by 47 per cent to N29.96 trillion, reinforcing its position as one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions. Customer deposits grew by 45 per cent to N21.96 trillion, reflecting the bank’s strong corporate and retail deposit base, as well as continued customer confidence. The shareholders’ fund also rose to N4.03 trillion, supported by a significant increase in retained earnings.

In line with its commitment to shareholder value, Zenith Bank has proposed a final dividend of N4.00 per share, bringing the total dividend payout for the year to N5.00 per share.

To strengthen its capital base and meet the Central Bank of Nigeria’s new capitalisation

requirements, Zenith Bank successfully raised N350 billion through a rights issue and public offer, which was oversubscribed by 160 per cent. The capital injection will be strategically deployed to enhance technology infrastructure, boost liquidity, and drive expansion into key African markets.

Zenith Bank’s impressive financial performance has earned it multiple awards, including recognition as Nigeria’s top bank by Tier-1 capital for the fifteenth consecutive year. The bank has also been named Best Bank in Nigeria, Most Sustainable Bank, and Best in Corporate Governance by leading global financial institutions.

With a solid capital base, a diversified revenue stream, and a clear growth strategy, Zenith Bank remains at the forefront of Nigeria’s financial sector. World Bank urges Nigeria to invest $15m annually in statistics upgrade

The World Bank has advised Nigeria to invest between $10 million and $15 million annually to enhance its national statistical system and align it with countries like Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, and Colombia.

According to a statement by Mrs. J. I. Osagie Jacobs, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, this recommendation was made by Mr. Johan Mistiaen, the World Bank Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, during a visit to the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu. Mistiaen, who was accompanied by World Bank Country Director Ndiame Diop, presented a report titled “Next-Level Statistics to Support Nigeria’s Reform and Growth Agenda,” highlighting that Nigeria’s statistical performance lags behind its aspirational peers. He noted that consistent

annual funding would strengthen the country’s ability to generate timely, highquality data for economic planning and policy reforms.

Senator Bagudu assured that the Federal Government remains committed to the independence of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and will continue to support its mandate of producing socio-economic data. He praised the NBS for its strong reputation in data collection and analysis, which has been instrumental in economic assessments by international organisations.

Statistician-General of the Federation and CEO of NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, stated that the Bureau had received its highest funding in a decade under the current administration. The NBS serves as Nigeria’s primary statistical agency, responsible for collecting, compiling, analysing, and disseminating official data on economic, social, demographic, and environmental issues.

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined from 24.48 per cent in January to 23.18 per cent in February, while core inflation, which excludes food and energy, slightly decreased from 22.59 per cent to 23.01 per cent.

The slowdown follows Nigeria’s recent rebasing of its Consumer Price Index (CPI), adjusting the reference base year from 2009 to 2024 to better reflect current consumer spending patterns and economic realities.

The rebasing aims to improve inflation measurement by incorporating newer goods and services, though concerns about data accuracy remain.

N1.92trn subsidy debt, funding gaps push power sector toward

PowerUp Nigeria, a power sector advocacy group, has warned that Nigeria’s power sector is on the brink of a major crisis due to an outstanding government subsidy debt now standing at N1.92 trillion.

According to reports, federal government subsidies to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) reached N1.92 trillion as of last year, while Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) continue to struggle with revenue collection.

Executive Director of PowerUp Nigeria, Adetayo Adegbemle, raised concerns over the Federal

Government’s failure to activate the Power Consumer Assistance Fund (PCAF) by the first quarter of 2025, calling it a major setback in addressing Nigeria’s electricity liquidity challenges.

Adegbemle warned that delaying the PCAF’s activation is pushing the sector deeper into financial distress.

“With subsidies soaring to N200 billion monthly and GenCos receiving only 39 per cent of their invoices by December 2024, the sector faces growing instability. However, this does not have to lead to collapse. With adaptive

policies, stakeholder collaboration, and accelerated reforms, recovery remains possible,” he said.

“To bridge the PCAF gap, the government must urgently establish an emergency liquidity facility backed by multilateral development partners or sovereign guarantees.

This fund could temporarily absorb part of the subsidy burden while fasttracking PCAF’s operationalisation.

Simultaneously, NERC should mandate DisCos to ring-fence revenue from Band-A customers (who pay higher tariffs) exclusively for settling GenCos’ invoices,

ensuring at least 50 per cent payment compliance. These measures would prevent further erosion of investor confidence and keep gas suppliers engaged.”

A report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its Q4 2024 electricity sector review showed that DisCos remitted only N336.6 billion out of the total N832.6 billion invoice from the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET). The DisCos’ Remittance Obligation (DRO) for the quarter stood at N360.9 billion.

The report also revealed that

foreign countries supplied with electricity by Nigeria’s power generation companies paid just 37 per cent of the $14.05 million worth of power sent to them. According to NERC, six international bilateral customers within NESI made a payment of $5.21 million against a cumulative invoice of $14.05 million issued by the Market Operator (MO) for services rendered in Q4 2024.

The Muritala Mohammed International Airport Road also has a speed limit of 60km/h. Exceeding these speed limits will attract a fine of N50,000.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), on various occasion had said it’s been

Other areas with designated speed limits include Ojota Bridge by Motorways at 50km/h, Lekki Ikoyi Bridge at 60km/h, Allen Avenue Junction at 50km/h, and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road at 60km/h Additionally, Ikorodu Roads, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, and Epe Expressway have speed limits of 60km/h, 60km/h, and 80km/h respectively.

working to reduce road crashes and casualties in Nigeria, and the implementation of speed limits is part of this effort.

Panam Percy Paul: I Turned Down

a £24M

Record Deal to Keep Jesus in My Songs

Legendary gospel singer Dr. Panam Percy Paul has shared a defining moment in his career when he rejected a staggering £24 million record deal in 1995 because it sought to dilute his message of faith.

Speaking in an interview with Pastor Emmanuel Iren, the renowned songwriter revealed that the lucrative three-year contract, valued at approximately N7 billion at the time, came with a major compromise— reducing direct references to Jesus in his music.

According to Paul, the record label suggested replacing the name “Jesus” with more neutral terms like “Righteous One” or “Greatest Lover” to broaden commercial appeal. However, he stood firm, choosing his spiritual convictions over financial gain.

For the gospel icon, the decision was clear. “Music is my ministry, not just my career. Removing Jesus from my songs would mean taking away the very essence of my message,” he said.

His revelation has sparked widespread admiration, with many praising him for prioritizing faith over fame. His story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that come with staying true to one’s beliefs, even in the face of immense worldly success.

How FG’s push for local auto manufacturing will reshape the economy

For decades, Nigeria has grappled with a heavy reliance on imported automobile parts, a dependency that has significantly strained the nation’s economy and hindered the development of its local automotive industry.

The federal government, recognizing the urgent need for self-sufficiency, has embarked on a series of bold initiatives aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on imported vehicle spare parts an import bill that currently costs Nigeria approximately $1 billion annually.

Through strategic investments, policy-driven reforms, and industrial partnerships, Nigeria is taking major steps toward establishing a sustainable and competitive local automotive manufacturing sector.

A National Strategy for Automotive Growth

The government’s drive to boost local manufacturing is a critical component of its broader industrialization agenda.

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) has spearheaded efforts to ensure that Nigeria’s automotive industry does not remain solely dependent on foreign imports.

This strategy includes fostering local production of key vehicle components, encouraging indigenous automakers, and creating a structured environment where manufacturing can thrive.

According to NADDC’s Director-General, Jelani Aliyu, “The automotive industry holds immense potential for Nigeria’s industrial growth. By shifting focus to local manufacturing, we are not only reducing our reliance on foreign spare parts but also building a robust industry that will create jobs and enhance economic stability.”

Building Auto Industrial Parks

A key aspect of this initiative is the establishment of Auto Industrial Parks across the country. These parks will serve as manufacturing hubs, providing small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) with the infrastructure and resources needed to produce high-quality spare parts and components locally.

One of the most prominent locations identified for this initiative is Nnewi, Anambra State, often referred to as the ‘Japan of Africa’ due to its long history of industrial innovation. The government aims to turn Nnewi into a major auto manufacturing hub, reducing the estimated $19 million spent annually on importing motorcycle parts.

Similar parks are also planned in Lagos, Kaduna, and Ogun states to decentralize production and maximize efficiency across the country.

These industrial parks will be equipped with shared resources such as advanced machinery, testing laboratories, and research centers to ensure that locally produced parts meet international quality standards.

The initiative also includes collaborations with academic institutions to train engineers and technicians in modern automotive technology, ensuring a skilled workforce to sustain the industry.

Stakeholders’ Reactions

Several key players in Nigeria’s automotive industry have weighed in on the federal government’s initiative, expressing both optimism and concerns about its long-term impact.

Innocent Chukwuma, Chairman of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM):

“This is a crucial step toward ensuring that Nigeria no longer depends on foreign-made components. If properly implemented, this policy will not only boost local production but also create a competitive environment for Nigerian manufacturers to thrive.”

Muda Yusuf, former Director-General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI):

“The idea of promoting local manufacturing is great, but sustainability is key. The government must provide a stable business environment, including infrastructure, low-interest financing, and protection against unfair competition from imported parts.”

Abubakar Jimoh, President of the Nigerian Automobile Manufacturers Association (NAMA):

“The biggest hurdles remain power supply and access to finance. If these are not addressed, the progress of this initiative will be slow. The government must ensure that industrial parks are provided with uninterrupted electricity and favorable financial policies.”

Challenges Facing Local Auto Manufacturing

While the initiative is promising, it comes with several challenges. Nigeria’s erratic power supply remains one of the biggest obstacles to large-scale manufacturing. Many local manufacturers are forced to rely on expensive diesel generators, which significantly increase production costs and make their products less competitive against cheaper imported alternatives.

Additionally, accessing finance remains a major hurdle for many local manufacturers. The high cost of credit and limited access to investment funds have stifled the growth of small and medium enterprises in the automotive sector.

To address this, the government is working with financial institutions to create funding schemes that offer low-interest loans and grants to qualified manufacturers.

Another challenge is the perception of locally made products. Many Nigerian consumers still prefer imported spare parts due to concerns over quality and durability.

To combat this, manufacturers must adopt stringent quality control measures and effective branding strategies to build trust in locally produced auto parts.

Private Sector and Foreign Investment Support

Recognizing that government efforts alone will not be sufficient, the initiative is designed to encourage private-sector participation and foreign investment. Several international automobile companies have expressed interest in setting up assembly plants and joint ventures with Nigerian manufacturers.

To attract investors, the government has introduced tax incentives, reduced import duties on raw materials, and simplified business registration processes for auto-related enterprises. These measures are expected to increase investment in local production, fostering technology transfer and innovation within the industry.

A Roadmap for the Future

If successfully implemented, Nigeria’s push for local automotive manufacturing could significantly boost the economy. Experts predict that in the next decade, the country could save billions in foreign exchange, create thousands of jobs, and establish itself as a major player in Africa’s automobile industry.

The long-term vision is to transition from assembling foreign-made components to fully producing vehicles and spare parts domestically. This will not only enhance Nigeria’s self-reliance but also position the country as a hub for automotive exports to other African nations.

While there are still hurdles to overcome, the commitment of the federal government, coupled with the resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs, provides a strong foundation for the growth of the country’s auto industry. With continued investment, policy support, and a focus on quality, Nigeria’s journey toward self-sufficiency in automobile manufacturing is well on its way to becoming a reality.

AvtoVAZ expands into Nigeria with spare parts hub, eyes local assembly

AvtoVAZ, Russia’s largest automaker, which is majority-owned by the Russian government, is expanding into Nigeria as part of a broader strategy to diversify operations beyond its home market.

The company plans to establish a spare parts hub and service center at the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos before the end of 2025, marking its most significant push into West Africa’s largest economy.

he automaker is also in talks with the Nigerian government to set up a local assembly plant, a move that could aid its long-term presence in a country where new car sales are outpaced by demand for used vehicles.

AvtoVAZ’s expansion is in response to increasing competition, particularly from Chinese automakers strengthening their presence in Russia amid ongoing talks of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Great

Wall Motors, a Chinese manufacturer, plans to boost its production capacity in Russia from 150,000 to 200,000 units by 2025.

Hyundai and Renault are reportedly plotting a return to the Russian market after a ceasefire deal is reached.

Seeking new growth avenues, AvtoVAZ is looking to Nigeria’s underdeveloped but highpotential automotive sector, where annual vehicle demand stands at approximately 720,000 units. Local production meets only about 14,000 units.

AvtoVAZ plans to tap into Nigeria’s push for alternative fuel vehicles. It will partner with a Russian engineering firm to establish a compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion plant, allowing Lada cars to be equipped with factory-fitted or locally converted gaspowered engines. While AvtoVAZ will supply the vehicles, the yet-to-be-selected engineering partner will handle the conversion process, according to Adewole Opeyemi, AvtoVAZ’s official representative in Nigeria.

“If you bring CNG cars to Nigeria, you don’t pay any duties, which is why we are in talks with the relevant agencies,” Opeyemi said.

“Some Lada cars will arrive with factory-fitted gas-powered engines, while others will be converted locally by Russian specialists.”

AvtoVAZ, best known for its Lada brand of affordable passenger cars, SUVs, and commercial vehicles, has been active in Africa

since 1999, shipping approximately 100,000 cars to the continent. Its first major venture in Africa was a joint partnership with Egypt’s Amal Foreign Trade Company, assembling Lada vehicles at a local Suzuki plant in Cairo. Initially focused on producing the Lada 2107 model, the collaboration later shifted to the 2110 model.

In December 2022, AvtoVAZ announced plans to export 20,000 vehicles in 2023, with a strong emphasis on expanding into new African markets. The company has since sought to reestablish its African footprint, with Ethiopia emerging as a key market. In 2023, AvtoVAZ signed a letter of intent with Ethio Engineering Group to begin local production of Lada vehicles. “We are witnessing a new wave of diplomatic cooperation between Russia and African countries. Nigeria, as the region’s biggest market, simply cannot be overlooked,” Artem Aglichev, AvtoVaz’s Head of Product Marketing, told TechCabal. “Opportunities are opening up for us, and we’re ready to explore them.” Nigeria’s auto industry remains largely dependent on imports, particularly used vehicles. The country’s local manufacturing sector includes players like Innoson Vehicle

Manufacturing, Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), Coscharis Motors, and GAC Motors.

However, foreign brands continue to dominate the market, with Toyota holding a 16.1% market share, thanks to its reputation for durability and readily available spare parts. Japanese brands Toyota and Honda control almost a third of the new and used vehicle market, while South Korean brands like Hyundai and Kia have gained popularity with their modern designs and competitive pricing.

“As a state-owned company, we fully understand the regulatory requirements and are committed to local assembly,” Aglichev said. “Nigeria has been a strong player in this field since the 1950s, with skilled labor, logistical capabilities, and economic feasibility. This is a logical and reasonable step, and we are confidently moving forward.”

While AvtoVAZ’s ambitions in Nigeria are significant, the company will face challenges ranging from regulatory hurdles to entrenched competition from local and foreign players. Whether its low-cost Lada models can carve out a niche in a market dominated by secondhand imports remains an open question.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at 73: celebrating a man of destiny

Abayomi Odunowo.

In a nation like Nigeria, where political uncertainty often overshadows progress, the question arises: Who will rise above the chaos to bring about the transformative change that the nation desperately needs? The legacy of leadership has been marred by inconsistency, indecisiveness, and a pervasive detachment from the needs of the populace. At a time when many leaders succumb to the pressure of political rivalry and opportunism, the nation seeks a beacon of hope a leader who is not only committed but also visionary and strategic.

Enter Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a political titan whose very essence defies the stereotypes that have long plagued Nigerian leadership. Tinubu represents a refreshing departure from the norms.

If you examine his trajectory, you will find a man with a singular purpose: to reshape Nigeria’s destiny for the better. Like him or hate him, Tinubu commands a presence that is both compelling and complex. His political opponents often dismiss him, failing to understand that beneath the surface

lies a master strategist, unwavering in his mission. His boldness might unsettle some, but for those who appreciate genuine leadership, it is a resounding call to action.

The political landscape is rife with distractions and petty skirmishes, yet Tinubu stands apart. Others may be concerned with the next election cycle, tirelessly maneuvering for political advantage, but Tinubu’s focus remains firmly anchored in the present. He seems liberated from the shackles of short-term thinking, leveraging each decision to construct a solid foundation for Nigeria’s future. The lingering question around him should not be whether he is merely playing the game of politics, but rather whether he is strategically working to redefine the rules altogether.

What sets Tinubu apart is not just his capacity for strategic thinking, but also his bold execution of a clearly defined vision. In him, we see the embodiment of what it means to prioritize legacy over legacy-hunting. He understands that true change takes time, perseverance, and a willingness to tackle the hard issues head-on. Instead of participating

in the usual political theatre that so often distracts leaders, Tinubu focuses on delivering reforms that will impact the fabric of Nigeria’s society.

His courage to make tough decisions, often in the face of criticism, showcases his commitment to building a prosperous Nigeria. While his political adversaries are occupied with fleeting alliances and 2027 plots, Tinubu concentrates on laying the groundwork for substantive change. Every policy he champions is calculated, designed to transform the Nigerian landscape into one of opportunity and growth.

One can infer that Tinubu’s silence amid the chaos isn’t an absence of ambition; it is a delayed response that builds suspense and ultimately reveals strategic genius. He remains acutely aware of the political battlefield and works diligently to shape it in his favor. Each move he makes resonates with a profound awareness of historical context and future implications.

His focus on a brighter future for Nigeria is evident in every interaction and policy initiative. The essence of his leadership can be distilled into a simple mantra: “Nigeria first.” This is

reflected in his methodical approach to governance —one that eschews the fleeting satisfaction of political gain for the enduring success of nationbuilding.

As we approach the next elections in 2027, those who underestimate Tinubu do so at their own peril. Far beneath the surface lies a reservoir of experience, determination, and foresight that promises to challenge any opposition. His legacy may not yet be fully written, but it is undoubtedly in the making. The political landscape will soon bear witness to the fruits of his labor, and it is a legacy that is poised to transcend time.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not merely a man of politics; he is a man of destiny. While the world engages in the noisy clamor of political rivalry, he stands focused and poised, ready to etch his name in the annals of Nigerian history. The doubters may keep their reservations, but to the discerning, the truth is evident: Tinubu is not just shaping a political narrative; he is crafting the future of an entire nation.

Ademola Lookman has enjoyed notable success against several Serie A teams, but Fiorentina has emerged as one of his favourite opponents.

The Atalanta forward has been in devastating form against I Viola, contributing four goals and two assists in just six league encounters.

Alongside Empoli, Fiorentina ranks as Ademola Lookman’s most receptive opponent in Italy’s top flight, as per Transfermarkt.

The former Fulham and Everton winger has recorded six goal involvements against both clubs, netting five goals and providing one

assist against Empoli while matching that tally against Fiorentina.

Lookman’s impact against Hellas Verona and Napoli is similarly impressive, with five goal contributions against each.

However, Fiorentina could soon hold the outright title as Lookman’s preferred rival.

Should Ademola Lookman find the net or register an assist in Sunday’s showdown at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, he will surpass his current record against Empoli and officially make Fiorentina his most preferred adversary in Serie A. Lookman will not only be looking to boost Atalanta’s top-four hopes when they

take on Fiorentina — he will also have an opportunity to etch his name in Serie A history.

The former Leicester City winger has scored in all four of his previous league appearances against Fiorentina. If he extends that streak this weekend, he will match Alexandre Pato’s long-standing record of scoring in his first five consecutive Serie A matches against the Tuscan side.

Former AC Milan forward Pato set the record on April 10, 2011, and no player has equalled it in the three-points-per-win era. The Brazilian enjoyed a prolific spell against Fiorentina, amassing six goal contributions (five goals and

one assist) in seven league meetings. Opta statistics, as reported by Calcio Atalanta, confirm that Lookman has already been involved in six goals against Fiorentina in just four appearances. Another goal on Sunday would see Lookman draw level with Pato, reinforcing his reputation as one of Fiorentina’s most dangerous opponents.

As Atalanta push for a Champions League spot, Lookman’s contributions will be crucial. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side currently sit in contention for European qualification, and their attacking threats will be key in securing a strong finish to the campaign.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not given up on the country’s bid to return to the World Cup next year after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar, a top official of the federation has said.

After beating Rwanda 2-0 in Kigali last Friday to brighten their chances of qualifying for the World Cup, the Super Eagles managed a timid 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, which has all but ended the country’s chances of making the trip to the United States, Canada and Mexico.

South Africa leads Group C with 13 points, five better that Rwanda and Benin Republic, who are on eight points, while Nigeria is fourth on seven points.

Yesterday, there were reports that the NFF held a crucial meeting with Coach Eric Chelle to look at ways of salvaging the country’s slight chance

of making the cut to the Mundial.

Nigeria must finish, at least, second in Group C with a good points count to stand the chance of being among the best second-placed teams in the African qualifying series, who will engage in a play-off to decide the continent’s representative in a global play-off for a final spot in the World Cup cast.

Speaking to The Guardian, yesterday, NFF’s Media Director, Ademola Olajire, said he is not aware of any meeting between the federation and Chelle, adding, however, that the body is waiting for FIFA’s reaction to the case Lesotho proffered against South Africa, who fielded an ineligible player in their match on Friday.

He said: “We are waiting to see how FIFA handles the South African case. We are also assessing our position to

know the best we can do to qualify for the World Cup, but I am not aware of any meeting between the NFF president or any board member with Coach Chelle.”

There was a report yesterday that the NFF held a crucial meeting with Coach Chelle to find ways of salvaging Super Eagles’ fading campaign for a ticket to the World Cup.

The report said that some members of the federation had complained that some of the players in the current squad had outlived their usefulness and contributed to Zimbabwe’s equaliser with barely one minute to the end of the game on Tuesday. The next set of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will hold in September with Nigeria hosting Lesotho and also travelling to meet South Africa in Johannesburg.
