Major Ports’ cargo handling witness strong momentum in first 11

months

…Coal, crude oil spike lead Port cargo charge in FY23, shows Govt data

NEW DELHI - India’s Major Ports have registered a strong growth during the 11 months of the ongoing financial year due to enhanced supply of imported coal, increased Coastal Shipping of domestic coal, and rising crude oil imports. Data released by the Government shows that cargo growth in FY23 has been 9.4 per cent, with total volumes at 711 million tonnes (mt).

This growth has come despite slow International trade for the majority of this fiscal year, as the impact of the RussiaUkraine war was seen across commodities.

Overseas cargo handled at Major Ports increased by 10.2 per cent to 546.88 mt during April-February 2022-23 from 496.45 mt during April-February 2021-22, according to data from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW). Major Ports refer to those owned by the Central government.

Coastal cargo handled at major ports increased by 7.1 per cent to 164.67 mt during FY23, from 153.70 mt during AprilFebruary, 2021-22. So far, in this financial year, imported and other unclassified coal has seen a spike of 89 per cent during the fiscal, while domestic thermal coal volumes grew by 21 per cent.

Crude oil cargo also saw a growth of 13 per cent.

Among the major drivers of coal demand is the country’s power generation sector which is again bracing for record high electricity demand in the upcoming summer months.

The Centre has also directed states to import thermal coal to meet the shortfall. Additionally, non-power sectors especially steel and manufacturing are witnessing an uptick in business which is also pushing demand for both coking and non-coking coal. Experts believe these numbers are likely to maintain an elevated level as more coal is moved through the rail-sea-rail (RSR) route over the rail route in the coming months.

Crude oil imports have been rising ever since sanctions-hit Russia offered its oil with deep discounts. India imported about 51 million barrels of crude oil from Russia in February, 16 per cent higher than the 44 million barrels imported in January.

Meanwhile, the international trade outlook remains grim, which is likely to impact movement of finished goods.

In containers, India saw a year-on-year price dip of 50 per cent from $4,237 in March 2022 to $2,127 in March 2023. Despite growth in all segments and added handling capacity at key ports such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) and Deendayal Port (DPT), container cargo had a near-negligible growth in FY23.

The Centre has made coastal shipping a focus area.

India’s spend of 1.7% of GDP on Logistics to set stage for $5 Trn economy

NEW DELHI : India will spend a whopping 1.7 per cent of its GDP on transport infrastructure this year — around twice the level in America and most European countries — a feat that has been noticed even by The Economist which called it ‘eye-watering’ upgrade that will set stage to achieve a USD5trillioneconomy.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Government has hikedcapitaloutlayoninfrastructuretoUSD122billionforthe fiscalyearstartingAprilasitlookstoprovideastrongimpetus to job creation and boost economic activity amid a global slowdown.

According to official data, the Modi Government has allocated Rs 2.4 lakh crore for railways capital expenditure, nine times higher than the amount in the financial year 2013-14. The funds will mostly be spent on building tracks, new coaches,electrification,anddevelopingfacilitiesatstations.

Allocationforroadshasjumped36%toRs2.7lakhcrorefor 2023-24. There is also the focus on reviving 50 additional airports, heliports, water aerodromes and advance landing groundsforimprovingregionalairconnectivity.

The Government has identified 100 critical transport infrastructure projects for last- and first-mile connectivity for the ports, coal, steel, fertiliser, and food grains sectors, where it intends to ramp up investments. “They will be taken up on

priority with an investment of Rs 75,000 crore, including Rs 15,000 crore from private sources,” Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman had said in her speech presenting theBudgetfor2023-24onFebruary1.

The unprecedented infrastructural makeover at such sheer scale and speed will help India fulfil its ambition to turn intoaUSD5trillioneconomyby2025-26,upfromUSD3.5trillion.

In the financial year starting in April, road and rail will account for nearly 11 per cent of Central Government capital spending,upfrom2.75percentin2014-15.

If infrastructure was a Central Government Department, it would have the third-biggest budget after the finance and Defence Ministries. The stated aim of this “generous spending” is to cut the cost of logistics within India from around14percentofGDPtodayto8percentby2030,itsaid.

India has added 50,000 km of national highway in the past eightyears,twiceasmuchasitmanagedinthepreviouseight. The length of the rural road network has increased from 3,81,000kmin2014to7,29,000kmin2023.

Over the same period, the number of airports has doubled to 148. “Modi’s faith in the transformative power of new transport infrastructure is well judged,” The Economist said. It is a precondition for the high growth that India aspires to achieve.ItisarisingtidethatwillliftallthesectionsofIndia.

At least, 50% of all the Tugs are likely to be converted into Green Tugs by 2030, which will considerably reduce emission as the country move towards achievingsustainabledevelopment,headded.

India has been selected as the first country under the IMO Green Voyage 2050 project to conduct a pilot project related to Green Shipping. The ministry has already identified Paradip Port, Deendayal Port and V.O. Chidambaram Port to developed as Hydrogen Hubscapableofhandling,storingandgenerationofgreenhydrogen by 2030. Rupee closer to replacing dollar as 18 nations agree to trade in INR

NEWDELHI-UAEmaysoonjoin18othercountriesthathave agreed to trade in the India Rupees and give up dollar as cross-bordertransactionmode.

Discussions are underway with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for settling trade in Rupee-Dirham for imports and exports, a report quoted a senior official as saying. Soon top leaders of both the countries are expected to announce the deal.

‘Transactionmucheasierinlocalcurrency’

The official said India imports and exports in large quantity and also get a lot of remittances from the Gulf countries.

“It becomes much easier to transact in the local currency rather than going to a third-country currency like the US dollarorEuro,”theofficialadded.

For the unversed, UAE is India’s third largest trading partner after the US and China. In the first half of the ongoing financial year, bilateral trade between India and UAE stood at $44billion.

In financial year 2022, India-UAE bilateral trade stood at about$73billion.

Last week, India’s Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad said RBI had granted approval to “domestic and foreign AD (Authorised Dealer) banks in 60 cases for opening SRVAs of banks from 18 nations” for settling payments in Indianrupees.

The 18 countries that have been allowed to trade in Indian rupees are – Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Botswana, Fiji, Germany, Guyana, Israel, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Seychelles, Tanzania, UgandaandtheUnitedKingdom.

The report quoted senior official saying that “a bilateral beginning has been made with these countries to trade in our own currencies and over a period of time the volumes will pick up.”

Container movement to fall in 2023 : Mizuho Bank

TOKYO : Mizuho Bank‘s industry research division predicts that demand for maritime container transport will fall in 2023 in a study on current supply and demand trends and shorttermforecastsinkeyindustries.

Mizuho Bank believes that box movement will be slower in 2023, especially in the Asia-Europe and Asia-North America trades, due to declining consumption and normalising demand, which has increased dramatically since the second

halfof2020.

The third largest financial services company in Japan anticipates a slight 1.4% year-on-year decline in container movement this year.

Spot rates have reverted to pre-pandemic levels, and annual contract rates are expected to fall. As a result, the bank expects that freight prices will be adjusted to reflect those in 2019.

Indo-Russian Mega Meet plans to achieve $50 billion trade target

NEW DELHI/MOSCOW : India and Russia will host a megabusinessmeetingherenextweekamidplanstopush bilateral trade to $50 billion this year, from a record $31 billion in 2022 following a sharp increase in energy and fertiliserimportsbyIndia.

The ‘Russia-India Business Forum: Strategic Partnership for Development and Growth’ will take place on March 29-30 as part of the St. Petersburg International EconomicForum.

The main focus of the forum will be IT, cybersecurity, technological sovereignty, smart cities, transport and logistics, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, officials said, adding that the focal point of the forum will be a plenary session on ‘Technological Alliances in the

Greater Eurasia’. Thetradetargetfor2025wasearlierfixedat$30billion.But the figure was surpassed in 2022 due to India’s oil imports fromRussia,andthereareexpectationsthatthefigurewill touch$50billionin2023.

“The Russia-India cooperation format is one of the drivers of region-wide efforts to improve the architecture of interstate relations in the Asia-Pacific Region. The forum is designed to strengthen business ties between the Russian and Indian business communities, to support Russian businesses entering the Indian market…,” said a statement by Anton Kobyakov, adviser to the RussianPresident.

Engineering exports to key markets decline in February : EEPC India

NEW DELHI : India’s engineering exports to 17 out of 25 key markets such as the US and China declined in the month of February 2023 primarily driven by the global economic slowdownandlowdemandformetalsandmetalproducts.

India’s engineering shipments to the US dipped 9.1% year-onyear in February to US$ 1.35 billion from US$ 1.49 billion in the corresponding period last year. Exports to the US registered positive year-on-year growth of 10.8% in the first 11 months of thecurrentfiscal.

Exports to China, another key market, continued a downward trend with shipments to the neighbouring country slumping 33.3% year-on-year to US$ 205.8 million in February 2023 as comparedtoUS$308.8millioninthesamemonthlastyear.

On a cumulative basis, India’s engineering exports to China sank 54% year-on-year to US$ 2.4 billion in the April-February periodof2022-23.

India’s engineering exports to China stood at US$ 5.21 billion intheApril-Februaryperiodof2021-22.

Whilethetopexportingcountriesrecordingpositivegrowthin February 2023 over February 2022 were Singapore, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Indonesia. The major decline observed among the top destinations includes the US, Germany,andItaly.

Region-wise, positive year-on-year growth was noted only in ASEAN and WANA (West Asia and North Africa) during February 2023. On a cumulative basis, year-on-year growth in exports was witnessed in North America followed by Latin America and Oceania while the highest decline was observed inNorth-EastAsia.

Mr. Arun Kumar Garodia said, “Our analysis indicates that global decline in demand for metals and metals products is mostly responsible for the negative growth in India’s exports. However, rising raw material prices especially iron and steel have also made our metal exporters less competitive in the globalmarket.”

Mr. Garodia noted that global trade projections do not look muchoptimisticalthoughthereareafewpositives.

As per the quick estimates of the Department of Commerce, Government of India, the share of engineering exports to total merchandise exports from India was 25.57% in February 2023 while for cumulative engineering exports from AprilFebruary2022-23,thesharewas23.86%.

Out of 34 engineering panels, 10 product panels witnessed positive growth in exports during February 2023 vis-a-vis the same month last fiscal. Major engineering products like iron and steel, products of iron and steel, non-ferrous metals like aluminum, nickel, lead, tin, and other products, industrial boilers, IC engines and parts, air-conditioning and refrigeration machinery, machinery for dairy, electrical machinery, and equipment, motor vehicles/cars, two & three wheelers, bicycle parts, auto tyres, and hand tools witnessed a decline in exports during February 2023 vis-à-vis February 2022.

On a cumulative basis, 22 out of 34 engineering panels recorded positive growth during Apr-Feb 2022-23 over the same period last fiscal. The major decline was witnessed in the iron & steel segment, non-ferrous segment, two-three wheelers,railwaytransport,bicycleparts,andprojectgoods.

Mumbai sees highest Avg rental growth of Warehousing space at 9.4 % in 2022: FICCI

NEW DELHI - Mumbai region witnessed maximum growth in weighted average rental of warehousing space at 9.4 per cent during the last calendar year on better demand for highquality assets and riseininputcosts,accordingtoareportbyVestianandFICCI.

Property consultant Vestian and industry body FICCI recently released a report ‘Warehousing & Logistics Sector in India’. “With improving occupier and investor sentiment in 2022, coupled with consistent demand for high-quality assets and an upsurge in input expenses, rental values for warehousing space saw a fair rate of increase across the key micro-markets in the country,” VestianFICCI said in the report.

On the weighted average rental value front, Mumbai region witnessed a growth of 9.4 per cent during the 2022 calendar year when compared with the rental values a year ago in 2021. According to the report, the weighted average rental of warehousing space in Bengaluru rose a 6.2 per cent in Bengaluru to Rs 20.5 per square feet per month.

Chennai saw a 3.8 per cent growth in weighted average rental to Rs 22 per square feet per month, while Mumbai witnessed a

9.4 per cent increase in rental to Rs 22.1 per square feet a month. The weighted average rental of warehousing space in Pune rose 9.1 per cent to Rs 24 per square feet per month.

In Delhi-NCR, the rental increased by 6.8 per cent to Rs 23.4 per square feet per month.

Hyderabad saw an increase of 5.8 per cent in 2022 to Rs 20 per square feet per month, while Kolkata witnessed 6.4 per cent rise to Rs 21.7 per square feet a month.

“India’s warehousing and logistics sector has not only shown remarkable resilience in the face of challenging economic headwinds but in fact the consistent growth in the absorption of warehousing space and the increasing institutional investment in this asset class in the past few years indicates the strong confidence of stakeholders and investors in the industry’s longterm growth prospects,” Vestian CEO Shrinivas Rao said. The sector will continue its upward trajectory in the forthcoming period, driven by the e-commerce boom, shift of unorganised to organised retail and strong policy making by the Government across sectors, notably the manufacturing sector, he added.

DP World establishes it’s first “Rail Linked Container Freight Station” at Hazira, Gujarat

- The new Container Freight Station (CFS) covers an area of 6 acres and has a capacity of handling up to 36,000 containers annually

- It will serve as a hub for consolidating and deconsolidating cargo. It will also facilitate customs clearance, and provide warehousing and distribution services to customers

- DP World will also offer value-added services, such as labelling, repackaging, and quality control, to meet the diverse needs of customers in the region

The facility is equipped with advanced technology and security systems, as well as specialized equipment for handling various types of cargo, including perishables and hazardous materials. The world class CFS will boost economic growth and competitiveness, as well as help drive overall logistics efficiencies in the region.
