Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India set to expand shipping fleet

MUMBAI: Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India Ltd (AM/NS India) will expand its Indian flagged fleet as the steel maker jointly owned by ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel seeks to secure supply chain in the face of a shortage of Indian registered ships in the market to ferry cargo on local routes, the Company’s Head of Shipping and Chartering was quoted assayingrecently.

AM/NS Shipping & Logistics Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned unt of AM/NS India, purchased two Kamsarmax ships last year to ferry cargo along the coast. It is close to buying two more ships from the second-hand market.

“BecauseoflessIndiantonnagein

the market, we have bought two Kamsarmax vessels and further we are planning to increase our fleet,” AshutoshMathur,Head-Shipping& Chartering at AM/NS India, said in Mumbaion16June.

“We move around 12 million tonnes (mt) of cargo from India’s east coast to Hazira in Gujarat on the west coast where the principal production siteislocated.Wearealsodispatching 1 mt of steel by coastal route. We prefer Indian flag vessels but sadly not enough are available in the market and hence have to look for foreignflagvessels,”Mathursaid.

“For a steel plant, it is very important to secure the supply chain, right from the mines to the logistics

and delivering to the customers doorstep,”hesaid.

AM/NS India requires some 200 ships a year to move cargo along the coast and the number is expected to go up as the steel plant expands capacityfrom8.6mt.

Chartering foreign flag vessels is not that easy because the country’s coastal trade is reserved for Indian registered ships under a so-called cabotage law and foreign flag ships can be hired only when Indian ships arenotavailableforthejob.

Russian oil to make up 30% of India’s imports

NEWDELHI:Russiamayaccount foralmostathirdofIndia’soilimports by the end of the current financial year, Arun Kumar Singh, the Head of India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd, was cited as saying on Saturday by RussiannewsagencyInterfax.

“The share of Russian oil imports, which was less than 2 per cent in 2021/2022, has increased tenfold to 20 per cent in the oil import basket,” Singh was quoted as saying at a St Petersburg International Economic

Forumpanel.

Thelevelmayreach30percentby the end of the 2023/24 financial year, he added. “Then, guaranteed trade between the two countries will grow even stronger and Russia will have a major role to play in ensuring India’s energysecurity.”

Interfax did not specify frames of the2023/24financialyear.

Russia has been redirecting its energy supplies from Western countries which have imposed

restrictions and sanctions on trade with Moscow, including an oil price cap, after its invasion of Ukraine. China and India purchase most of the re-routedRussianenergy.

Russian crude oil imports by India, the world’s No. 3 crude importer, hit an all-time high in May as buyers gorged on discounted supplies, reducing demand for oil from the Middle East and Africa, according to preliminary assessmentsfromshiptrackers.

NEW DELHI: Amidst the slowdown in the global demand, India’s exports are likely to touch US $1000 billion by 2024-25, said an analysisconductedbyPHDResearch Bureau, PHD Chamber of Commerce andIndustry.

The dynamic policy environment provided by the government along with efforts of the exporters to connect with global value chains will enhance the export volumes in the coming times, said Mr. Saket Dalmia, President, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, inapressstatementissuedhere.

Though some slowdown is seen in the short-term, till September 2023, due to the uncertainties and recessionary headwinds in some of the advanced economies, exports are expected to pick up significantly from the month of October 2023, said the industrybodyPHDCCI

The emerging high growth destinations such as Togo, Netherlands, Brazil, Israel, Indonesia, Turkey, Australia, South Africa, SaudiArabia andBelgium and highgrowthexportcommoditiessuch as Sugar and confectionary, Mineral fuel and oils, aluminum and articles, inorganic chemicals, ships, boats and floatingstructure,rubberandarticles and optical, photographic, medical apparatus would enhance India’s export growth to new highs, said the industrybodyPHDCCI.

The top 10 highly growing export destinations have shown a consistent growth during the last five years (FY 2019 to FY 2023 average) including Togo (73%), the Netherlands (36%), Brazil (28%), Israel (27%), Indonesia (24%), Turkey (22%), Australia (20%), South Africa (19%), Saudi Arabia (16%)andBelgium(13%).

Exports to these countries have grown at high growth rate amidst the global economic slowdown. These countries are emerging major growth destinations for India’s exports though the volumes have to pick up in the coming times, said Mr.SaketDalmia.

The top 10 highly growing export commoditieshaveshownaconsistent high growth during the last five years (FY 2019 to FY 2023 average) including Sugar and confectionary (43%), Mineral fuel and oils (36%), Electricalmachineryandparts(27%), aluminum and articles (18%), inorganic chemicals, precious and rare- earth metals (16%) miscellaneous chemical products (16%), Cereals (14%), iron and steel (12%), ships, boats and floating structures (11%), rubber and articles (11%) and optical, photographic, medicalapparatus(10%).

The high growth-high volume export commodities have significant potential to enhance India’s exports growthtonewhighssaidMrDalmia.

The growth of services during the last two years at 24% (average) is commendable as our services have shown a great resilience and price competitiveness in the global markets,saidMr.SaketDalmia.

The growth of services exports will also be a major growth driver to achieve the ambitious targets of USD 1 trillion by 2024-25 and USD 2 trillion by2029-30.

The launch of India’s new Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023 with its five keyelementsofDuration,Dynamism, Decentralisation, Direction and Disaster proofing, is aimed at creating an enabling ecosystem for exporters. It shall bolster India’s export quantum while considering the size of the Indian economy and its manufacturing and service sector base,saidMr.SaketDalmia.

The FTP 2023 aims to increase India’s competitiveness in the global marketsbypromotinganddeveloping each state to be able to integrate with theglobaltradewhichisamoveinline with India’s vision of becoming “Atmanirbhar” (self-reliant), said Mr.Dalmia.

Going forward, ease of doing exports with calibrated reforms by the government will be crucial to achieve the target of USD 2 trillion by 2030,saidMr.SaketDalmia.

Review committee set to clear Rs 41,000 crore Nicobar Port project

KOLKATA: A high-powered committee (HPC) formed to scrutinise the environmental clearance (EC) given to the Centre’s ambitious Great Nicobar transshipment port project is likely to give its all-clear to the proposed project, which has been halted since April, multiple senior officials told .

On April 3, the Kolkata Bench of the NationalGreenTribunal(NGT)puta two-month stay on any further work in the EC granted to the project. The Rs 41,000 crore project would be on hold until the NGT-appointed committee scrutinises the green approvalgrantedbytheCentre,read theorder.

The committee was given two months to scrutinise “unanswered deficiencies” in the EC, which allegedly failed to address severe environmental and regulatory concerns related to the development of the mega port, which the Centre aims at building in a public-private partnershipmode.

Exports to US double, realisation high

MUMBAI: Mango exports to the US have crossed 2,000 tonne in the current season, up from 891 tonne in the 2022-23 season. The exports of Banganpalli and Kesar varieties have commenced this season to South Korea, another high value market. Exports to the United Kingdom is currentlybeingundertaken.

Exporters said that Alphonso and Kesar varieties have been sold in the US market at a premium of $ 9/a kg and$7/akgrespectively.

Trade sources said that one of the factors behind the spike in mango exportstotheUSandtheUKthisyear

has been the low cost of air freight rates, which rose sharply in the last few years because of the pandemic, has‘normalised’sincethen.

“The price gap between an Indian mango and those sourced from South American countries has reduced and because Indian mangoes are sent through air freight, its aroma and freshness is preserved while mangoes from South America is transported through road to the USA,” Kaushal Khakhar, CEO, Kay Bee Exports, one of the leading Mango Exporter from Maharashtrasaid.

Officials said that the irradiation facility at Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation, Ahmedabad, along with similar facilities at Vashi (Navi Mumbai), Nasik and Bengaluru has helped expand mango exports to a high value market such as the United States. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products DevelopmentAuthority(APEDA)has assisted state government agencies in setting up vapour heat treatment facilities in Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Vashi (Maharashtra), Nuzvid and Tirupati(AndhraPradesh).

A.P. Moller - Maersk increases cargo flight frequency and commits new freighter to Global network

COPENHAGEN: In an effort to strengthen connectivity and meet customers’ integrated logistics needs, A.P. MollerMaersk (Maersk) is bolstering its growing freighter network between Mainland China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the U.S. by increasing frequencies of regular flightsaswellasintroducingadditionalaircraft.

“The introduction of an additional aircraft together with a substantial increase in rotations will further expand our ability to service our customers with regular flights and controlled capacity while ensuring visibility, reliability, and resilience in their supply chains. At the same time, we are further strengthening our position as a truly customer drivenpartnerintheglobalairfreightmarket,”said, Michel Pozas Lucic, Global Head of Air in A.P. Moller – Maersk.

On the transpacific corridor connecting Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) and Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, China (HGH), weekly rotations will double from three to six, while weekly rotations between Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, South Carolina (GSP), Incheon International Airport, Korea (ICN) and Shenyang Taoxian International Airport,China(SHE)willgofromtwotothree.

In addition, the air service offerings between Billund Airport, Denmark (BLL) and Hangzhou Xiaoshan

International Airport (HGH) will increase from three to five weekly rotations. At the same time, the route will introduce a newly converted Boeing 767 freighter that is expected to enter operations directly. The new tail is operated by Maersk Air Cargo, the inhouse cargo airline of Maersk, and is thefifthofinitiallysixorderedBoeing767 freighters, a pipeline of both newly built and converted cargoaircraft.

By boosting its customer-backed air corridors, Maersk is expected to plug a connectivity gap between the world’s three largest markets for ocean customers, North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific with new solutions for time sensitiveandhighvaluecargo.

Maersk has introduced several initiatives to bolster its air freight services. The company recently opened a new Chicago air freight gateway facility to add more supply chain integration opportunities for customers using ChicagoO’HareInternationalandRockfordInternational.

Three months ago, Maersk celebrated the inaugural flight of the logistics company´s new air freight service with weekly scheduled flights between Denmark and China operatedbyMaerskAirCargo.

Chief of UN farm fund lauds India for reviving global focus on millets, exporting wheat to 18 countries

NEW DELHI: The United Nations fundforagriculturaldevelopmenthas lauded India for reviving focus on millets and exporting 1.8 million tonnes of wheat to 18 countries that faced an acute shortage of food last yearinthewakeofthewarinUkraine.

Alvaro Lario, the president of the International Fund of Agricultural Development (IFAD), also said that

India's G20 presidency has the potential to "transform" the global food systems as some of New Delhi's priority areas are in sync with that of the UN body. "We also appreciate India's exports of wheat - 1.8 million tonnes - to 18 countries facing an acuteshortagelastyearinthewakeof thewarinUkraine,"hesaid.

Govt apathy delays getting ISPS code for Adani Port

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM :

Owing to the indifference of the State Government in providing the substitute one acre land for acquiring the plot owned by Vizhinjam diocese atthepremisesofAdaniPort,thePort Authorities are unable to complete thefencingworkaroundit.Asaresult, the Director General of Shipping has not given the international ship and port facility security (ISPS) code to the Adani Port as it is a must to start shippingservicefromaport.

For getting ISPS code, a port has to clear a set of criteria such as

fencing works, signal system, CCTV camera installations etc. Except the fencing works, the port authority has completed all other works for getting the code. However, the code was denied due to the pending fencing works.

Two structures – an idol of Mary Matha and a holy cross – owned by Vizhinjam diocese are located inside the port premises and years ago the government had promised them a substitute piece of land for relocating these structures. However, nothing hasbeendonesofar.

With only a few more months remaining for the anchoring of the first mother ship from China at Vizhinjam International Seaport (most likely in September), the port authorities have expressed their concern as they cannot start shipping service without securing ISPCcode.

The Vizhinjam diocese has demanded an acre of land at Mullumukku, an area near the port, for relocating the structures. However,theGovernmenthasnotyet agreedtoit.

India & Russia aim to reach $50 Bn in bilateral trade in 2023

MOSCOW: The India-Russia Business Forum was held recently, on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

The participants discussed the efforts the governments of India and Russia are taking to overcome transport and logistics problems, prospectsofsettingupajointbanking and financial structure to support the bilateral trade potential, and highpriority areas of cooperation between IndiaandRussia.

“I can say that we always get very good and interesting content from them which we adapt to Russian viewers. We also make our own contribution to the development of bilateral relations,” Ksenia Komissarova said, who moderated thetalkamongparticipants.

The first speaker was Ved PrakashSingh, FirstSecretary and Head of Economic and Commercial Department of the Embassy of India in Moscow. He said that the Russian and Indian leadersin2021haddecidedtoreacha bilateraltradevolumeof$30billionby 2025, but that there was potential to increasethisfigure.

“Thisyear,wehaveanopportunity to surpass that figure. In 2023, our goal is to reach a bilateral trade volume of $50 billion. This is historically high and a huge achievement,”hesaid.

Ved Prakash Singh also pointed out that the two countries have the potential to develop in sectors like pharmaceuticals, chemicals and agriculture. Thus, it is possible to increaseexportsfromIndiatoRussia.

“Trade and economic cooperation between India and Russia has been growing at a rapid pace in recent years. The two countries are striving to strengthen partnerships in the energy sector, trade.Alargenumberofagreements and contracts between the parties have been signed in recent years, laying the foundation for further deepening of our relations,” said Sammy Kotwani, President of the IndianBusinessAlliance(IBA).

HenotedthatIndiahasafavorable business environment, “As an association (IBA), we provide a certain set of measures to support entrepreneurs. We provide assistance in company registration, allow entrepreneurs to get various permitsandlicensestodobusinessin theCountry.”

Drewry survey: Buyers of spot rates expect increases in July

LONDON: The container shipping market is in a state of flux and is harder to forecast than previously. ButaDrewrysurveyofbuyersofspot rates supports the view that spot rateswillriseinJuly.

Overthepastyear,spotcontainer freight rates have continuously dropped from the previous Covid-

related crazy levels of 2021-mid 22 andappearedtohavefoundafloor.

At the end of May, Drewry conducted a short survey, asking buyers of spot rates in the container shipping market what level of spot rates they are expecting in June (average for the month) and in July (averageforthemonth).

India & UK seeking equal treatment for services sector companies under proposed FTA

NEW DELHI: India and the UK are seeking equal treatment in each other’s market for their respective companiesengaged inthe servicessector underthe proposed free trade agreement, which is under negotiations, a government official said. The two countries are looking at promoting trade in services through this agreement, negotiationsforwhichwaslaunchedonJanuary13,2021.

As many as ten rounds of talks have been completed till June this year and both sides are aiming to conclude the negotiationsattheearliest.

In the services sector, the official said the UK is showing keen interest in areas such as financial sectors, while India is looking at areas such as education and movement of skilled professionals.

Under the services chapter of the free trade agreement,

therearenocustomsdutyconcessionsgiventoeachother.

The two trading partners negotiate issues like giving national treatment to Indian and British companies in different sectors and ease norms to promote trade in services like simple visa processes for skilled labour force and easy foreigndirectinvestmentnormsinthesector.

“Regular meetings are held at higher levels to review the progress, resolve the outstanding issues and discuss the way forward in negotiations. So far nothing has firmed up in the services sector,” the official, who did not wish to be identified, said.

“The UK is an important financial services centre of the world, so they always have interest in that,” the official added. Both sides have exchanged the list of services where they are keentopromoteexports.

India weighs barter trade with crisis-hit Egypt in credit line talks – sources

NEW DELHI: India is weighing a proposal to begin barter trade in goods like fertiliser and gas with Egypt as part of a wider deal that could see New Delhi extending a credit line worthseveralbilliondollarstoCairo,sourcestoldReuters.

An agreement is likely to be announced later this month during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit to Egypt, which faces a prolonged foreign currency shortage, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

India’s foreign ministry is consulting with departments on

theirappetiteforfertiliserandgasfromCairoaspartpayment forthecreditline,anIndianofficialsaid.

New Delhi is keen to diversify its fertiliser imports, especially after 2021, when some Indian states faced shortages duetoChineseexportrestrictionsandarecordpricesurge.

As part of the facility, Egypt is keen to take wheat supplies, among other items, but New Delhi is unlikely to ship the grain duetoitswheatexportban,theIndianofficialadded.

India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, banned wheat exports in May 2022 to help control rising domestic prices, rescinding a plan to export 3 million tons of wheat to Egypt in the year 2022/23. Egypt now depends mostly on Russiaforthegrain.

Boosting trade in a digital Bharat

The recent India e-Conomy Report 2023 shows that in India, the average hours spent per day per user are 6.5 as compared to 5.5 in China and 7 in the USA. However, when it comes to digital payments, the number of real-time transactions per capita per year is 65 in India as compared to 12 in China and 8 in the USA. India had 220 million online shoppers between May 2022 and May 2023. Further, the report shows there are 700 million internet users in the country, of which 350 million use digital payments. These staggering statistics prove the potential the eCommerce sector holds in India.
