Transworld Group Chairman Ramesh S. Ramakrishnan said the joint venture would enable the company to focus on the ship ownership aspect of their business, while utilizing FLEET’s technical ship management expertise on a broader scale.

NYK to build its Sixth LPG Dual-Fuel

Very Large LPG / Ammonia Carrier

TOKYO:NYKisdelightedtoannouncetheorderofits sixth liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel very large LPG / liquefied ammonia gas carrier (VLGC) from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI). The ship will be built at the KHI Sakaide Works shipyard and is set for deliveryin2026.

This vessel is the eighth in NYK’s fleet of LPG-fueled LPGcarriersandthesixthinanewtypeofvesselcapable of carrying ammonia and thus flexibly responding to varioustradepatterns.

Furthermore,inadditiontotheLPGdual-fuelengine, the ship will have a shaft generator that can generate electricity during the voyage by using the rotation of the shaft that connects the main engine to the propeller. Sincethedieselgeneratorcanbestoppedduringregular seagoing transit, realizing full navigation with LPG fuel will be possible except for the use of a small amount of pilotfuelasanignitionsource.

When LPG is used as fuel, exhaust gas from the ordered VLGC will contain at least 95% less sulfur oxide (SOx)and20%lessCO2thanNYK’sconventionalVLGCs usingheavy-oilfiredengines.

This new VLGC will comply not only with the SOx

Global Cap regulations that were tightened from January 2020 but also with the IMO’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 regulations, which implemented stricter CO2 emission standards fromApril2022.

Moreover,thevesselisexpectedtobegivennotations by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) as a VLGC that has a preparatory design in accordance with the guidelines issued by ClassNK so that this vessel may use ammonia fuelinthefuture.

DGFT implements the Advance Authorisation Scheme, allows duty-free import of inputs for export purposes

NEW DELHI: Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) implements the Advance Authorisation Scheme under the Foreign Trade Policy, whichallowsduty-freeimportofinputs for export purposes. The eligibility of inputsisdeterminedbySector-specific Norms Committees based on inputoutputnorms.

To make the norms fixation process more efficient, the DGFT has created a user-friendly and searchable database of Ad-hoc Norms fixed in the previous years. These norms can be used by any exporter without requiring a Norms

Committee review as outlined in the Foreign Trade Policy 2023. The database is hosted on the DGFT Website (https://dgft.gov.in) and allows users to search using Export or Import Item Description, Technical Characteristics, or Indian TariffClassificationITC(HS)codes.

To access the database, the exporterorpublicmayvisittheDGFT Website under Services --> Advance Authorisation/DFIA --> Ad-hoc norms. If an ad-hoc norm matches the item description, specifiedwastages,andcomplieswith the provisions outlined in the

Handbook of Procedures (HBP), applicants may choose to apply for an Advance Authorisation under the "No-Norm Repeat" basis. This option allows users to obtain an advance authorisation without approaching the Norms Committee again, reducing the workload and enabling faster processing, subject to provisionsasoutlinedinFTP/HBP.

This trade facilitation measure simplifies the advance authorisation andnormsfixationprocess,resultingin shorterturnaroundtimesforexporters, improved ease of doing business, and reducedcomplianceburden.

India eyes 5,000 km Eastern Regional Waterways grid connecting Bangladesh, Myanmar: Sarbananda Sonowal

NEW DELHI: Eyeing a greater presence along the South East Asian trade route, and countering China’s dominance in the region, India is engaging with its two key neighbours, Myanmar and Bangladesh, pushing for better port and waterways connectivity acrossa5,000km–oddgrid.

Apart from investment in ports and a multi-modal logistics hub in Myanmar, India is also engaging with Bangladesh for dredging activities across connecting waterways while linking its own inland waterways network with the neighbourhood’s ports, says Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping andWaterways(MoPSW).

The idea, he tells during an exclusive interaction, is to to connect India to trade routes linking Thailand and other ASEAN nations like Laos, whilealsoensureaccesstoSingapore port, a key touch point on the internationalshippingroute.

“The Eastern Regional Waterways Grid, covering some 5,000 kms, will cover our own inland waterways and river networks, Bangladesh ports, and investment in Myanmarport,”Sonowaladded.

Operations recently began at the Sittwe Port in Myanmar, that were partly financed by India, and the first batch of cargo movement between KolkataandSittwehashappened.

Following a pilot shipment of rice to Bangladesh in March 2023, the first official cargo of 20,000 bags comprising 1,000 metric tonnes of cement, was flagged off in May and wasreceivedafewdayslater.

The Sittwe Port is a seaport designed to handle 20,000 DWT (dead weight tonnage) at its maximum capacity. At present, it is operated for 6,000DWTwithadraftof7.9meters.

“However, the same will be increased to its maximum capacity with the enhancement of available

draft for accommodating large cargo ships,”Sonowalexplained.

Operations at the Sittwe port have been hit following Cyclone Mocha on May 15. And the port jetty is operational only for relief materials for Sittwe town and for adjoining areas,portofficialsadded.

SonowaladdedIndiancargoliners are already using the India –Bangladesh protocol route for better regional connectivity. The routes include Kolkata – Pandu – Kolkata; Kolkata – Karimganj – Kolkata; Rajshahi – Dhulian – Rajshahi and Pandu–Karimganj–Pandu.

Recently, Bangladesh gave India access to transport goods to the North East through its Chattogram and Mongla ports. Indian traders have to pay a transshipment fees (andsomeotherfeestoo).

“Movement of cargo ships in the neighbourhood are up substantially,” Sonowalsaid.

India indispensable partner for supply chains: United States Secretary of the Treasury

WASHINGTON:Friendshoringisan important foundation for global supply chain resilience, in which India is an indispensable partner, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said recently, adding that American companies are investing in manufacturing in India for exportstotheUS.

“I will use this trip to deepen what was already a very significant relationship with respect to friendshoring with the United States,” Yellen said here at the G20 meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors.

The US is India’s largest export market. Bilateral trade between the

two countries exceeded $191 billion in 2022, nearly double of that in 2014.

“The behaviour by the private sector is really an important part of friendshoring. You’re seeing continued advancements of investments in India by private firms that are seeking to produce and export to the US,” Yellensaid.

Recently, electric car maker Tesla said it is exploring an investment proposal to set up a factory in the country. It will likely set up its supply chainecosystem.

India has been highlighting opportunitiesavailableinthecountryto relocate companies from China not just

as a captive market, but also as a potential hub serving the region by becomingakeysupplychainpartner.

Speaking about her priorities in the G20 meeting, Yellen said she would focus on debt distress in emerging markets and developing countries, multilateral development bank evolution, support for Ukraine, and the globaltaxdeal.

“Thisweek,Iwillcontinuetopushfor full and timely participation of all bilateral official creditors on pending debt restructuring cases. I was pleased by last month’s progress on Zambia, which I discussed with my Chinese counterpartslastweek,”shesaid.

India & Indonesia working on payment mechanism, trading in local currencies

NEWDELHI:IndiaandIndonesia are working on a real-time payment mechanism and trading in local currencies, the two countries announced on Sunday.

“Both countries would discuss

thepossibilityofcooperationindigital technology, payments systems under central banks and using local currency," Indonesian Finance MinisterSriMulyaniIndrawati said recently.

The two countries launched an Economic and Financial Dialogue that will focus on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, financial services, and infrastructure development,amongothers.

Commerce Ministry looking at ways to increase its bandwidth to negotiate free trade pacts

NEW DELHI: With a number of countries approaching India for negotiating bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) to boost economic ties, the Commerce Ministry is looking at ways to increase its bandwidth for undertakingthesetimeandhuman resourceconsumingtalks,asenior officialsaid.

The Commerce Ministry officials at present are negotiating several FTAs with countries including the UK,CanadaandEuropeanUnion.

“Negotiations are really time consuming and energy consuming and human resource consuming. Therefore,wearetryingtoincrease the bandwidth within the Commerce Department,” the Governmentofficialsaid.

Indian Trade Service Officers areexpectedtobeengagedmorein the negotiations of free trade agreements.

Latin American countries such asPeruarealsointerestedindoing an FTA with India and India is also looking deeply into that, the official said.

South American trade bloc MERCOSURisalsokeentoexpand

the scope of existing preferential trade agreements to an FTA. India and the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) group is also looking to negotiateatradepact.

India has also expressed an interest to do these negotiations bilaterally or individually with Africa.

MERCOSUR comprises Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay with Bolivia and Chile as associate members. It was formed in 1991 withtheobjectiveoffreemovement of goods, capital, services and peopleintheregion.

Accordingtoatradeexpert,inan FTA,theDepartmentofCommerce leads the team. The important Ministries which are involved in these negotiations include the departmentsofrevenue,chemicals, pharma, fertiliser, textiles, heavy industries, and the department for promotion of industry and internal trade(DPIIT).

As new subjects like e-commerce, labour, environment, gender and sustainability are entering into these agreements, officers dealing with these issues from different ministries are

playing an important role in the negotiations.

Institutes like Centre for WTO Studies, private experts and lawyers too get engaged in these talks.

The Commerce Ministry is planning to restructure the department and as part of that, thereisaproposaltosetupaGlobal Trade Promotion Organization (GTPO).

GTPO is a key recommendation of a report for revamping the DepartmentofCommerce.GTPOis expectedtoplayakeyroleinfuture export promotion initiatives in the country. The proposed body would be manned by the trade service officersatkeypositions,itadded.

Another expert said that the Government officials involved in these negotiations should carefully listen to the views of all the stakeholders and then act accordingly.

Trade negotiations with partner countries is a dynamic and continuous process for obtaining better market access for India’s exports and other business opportunities.

Transport & Logistics: Container trade thrives amidst Global downturn

MUMBAI: Global Container trade volumes have experienced a modest decline of 2% y-o-y in Apr-May 2023. However, there is positive growth in India’s major ports’ volumes and container volumes, which have increased by 2% y-o-y in Apr-June 2023. Railway volumes and container volumes have also witnessed a 1%y-o-yincrease,althoughindicating aslightdecelerationinrailcoefficient. Lookingaheadto2023,weanticipatea continuation of the GST-driven organised players’ share gain, as well as an increase in traffic on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). Considering these factors, we have identified Concor, Delhivery, and TCI Expressasourtoppicks,accordingto aJeffriesResearch.

Western DFC ramps up: In June 2023, the volume of major ports in India witnessed a marginal

increase of just 0.5% y-o-y, while container volumes experienced a decline of 7% y-o-y. This decline was offset by a disproportionate rise in iron ore and fertiliser volumes, which helped balance the slowdown in other segments. Notably, ports in Tamil Nadu have been leading the regional volume decline, both in June 2023 and the Apr-June period.

In terms of rail transportation, overall rail volumes experienced a 2% y-o-y decline, with container volumes down by 10% y-o-y in June. However, we anticipate a positive impact on rail volumes as the Gujarat Ports-Dadri stretch of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) began operations in Apr-May 2023. This development should contribute to a rise in rail volumes in the near future.

AdditionalDFCsonthecards:The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor

(WDFC) has been commissioned, connecting Gujarat Ports to Dadri in the hinterland. The commissioning of thestretchfromastation100kmaway from JNPT to Dadri is expected to be completed by December 2023. The final 100 km stretch is scheduled tobeoperationalbytheendofCY24.

The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) currently has 900 km out of the total 1,856 km fully functional,withtheremainingstretch expected to be completed by December2023.

Efforts are being made to expand non-conventional freight transportation. Ultimately, the improved time and cost efficiency of the DFCs should help corporations reduce inventory days and enhance reliability. Detailed project reports are currently being submitted to the Ministry for additional Dedicated FreightCorridors.

Railways approves Rail Corridor to connect Haryana with Gujarat Ports

NEW DELHI: The Union Railway Ministry has authorized the 129-kilometer South Haryana Economic Rail Corridor, which will connect the state to four ports in Gujarat.

ThiscorridorwillcrossRajasthan. The construction is scheduled to begin in a few years, since the ministryisnoworganizingasurveyof the semi-high speed rail corridor. For this survey, a budget of Rs31millionhasbeensetaside.

The corridor, which would cost Rs 12.25 billion, will run from Farrukhnagar in Gurgaon to Loharu in Bhiwani via Jhajjar and CharkhiDadri.

The Farrukhnagar-Loharu railway will be linked to Bahadurgarh

and Sonipat in Haryana in the future as part of the continuing construction oftheOrbitalRailCorridor.

Existing railway lines from Delhi, Rajasthan,andGurgaonwillbelinked to the Farrukhnagar-Loharu section aswell.

“Afterconstructionofthecorridor, Haryana will have direct connectivity with four ports of Gujarat — Kandla, Mundra, Navlakhi and Jakhau — through this railway line. It will indirectly help connect Delhi with the four ports,” Rohtak MP Arvind Sharma stated, following his meeting with the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The Haryana Government approved the project in 2022. Trains will be able to operate at

speeds ranging from 130 to 160 kmph oncethelineiscompleted.

The Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC), a joint venture between the Indian Railways and the Haryana government, will carry out the project’sexecution.

HRIDC is currently building the Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor, which will link Palwal and Sonipat through Sohna, Manesar, and Kharkhoda. This new railway line will be capable of handling both passengerandfreighttrains.

The project’s goal is to shorten travel time for the region’s numerous industrialcentres.Officialsclaimthat once completed, the road from DelhiNCRtoGujaratwillbeshorter.

Automobile exports from India dip 28 % in Q1 as several markets hit by monetary crisis

NEW DELHI: Automobile exports from India declined 28 per cent in the April-June period this year hit by monetary crisis in Africa and various otherdevelopingcountries,according to the latest data shared by industry body SIAM. Overall exports stood at 10,32,449 units in the first quarter ended on June 30, 2023 as compared with14,25,967unitsinthesameperiod oflastyear.

"All vehicle segments have seen a drop in exports in the first quarter, as there has been a devaluation of

currencies in many destinations of exports, especially in Africa and other developing countries," Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) DGRajesh Menon said.

These countries have been facing challenges of availability of foreign exchange, which is limiting the sales for vehicles and countries are focusing more on imports of essential items,thoughthedemandforvehicles from consumers exists in these markets,headded.

Total passenger vehicle shipments stood at 1,52,156 units in the June quarter, down 5 per cent from 1,60,116 units in April-June periodof2022.

Passenger cars shipments dropped to 94,793 units in the period underreviewfrom1,04,400unitsinthe year-agoperiod.

Similarly,utilityvehicleshipments saw a marginal decline to 55,419 units in the first quarter this fiscal as against 55,547 units in the same periodoflastyear.

PM Modi says India, UAE will keep working closely for Global Good

Saudi Arabia unveils plans to unveil 59 Logistics Zones by 2030

LONDON: Saudi Arabia has announced plans to establish 59 logistics zones by 2030, a move that underscores the country’s commitment to its ambitious Vision 2030, officials revealed at a reception held in London.

The event, hosted by the Saudi Transport General Authority, was attended by key figures such as the Saudi Ambassador to the UK Prince Khalid Bn Bandar Bin Sultan, Deputy Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Acting Chairman of the Transport General Authority, Dr Rumaih Al Rumaih, as well as ambassadors, delegates, members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and stakeholdersinthesector.

In his speech, Prince Khalid emphasised the significance of the recent developments in the country’s maritime sector, attributing them to the

Kingdom’s steadfast dedication towards realising Vision 2030. He highlighted the progress made in logistics services, the strengthening ties with the IMO, and SaudiArabia’ssupportforthemarineenvironment.

“Our aim by 2030 is to be among the top ten countries in the Logistics Performance Index,” Dr. Al Rumaih stated, outlining the plans to set up 59 logistics zones and toboostportcapacitytomorethan40millioncontainers.

He added, “We’ve made substantial strides in enhancing the marine environment, and we are pleased to be fostering collaborations with the IMO and its member states on initiatives that bolster climate action andcooperationamongseafarers.”

The Deputy Minister also announced the Maritime Industry Sustainability Conference, slated for September 4-6, 2023, and themed “Innovation for a GreenerFuture”.

Allcargo Terminals appoints Pritam Vartak as Chief Financial Officer
