APM Terminals Mumbai, increase capacity for future

MUMBAI : We're investing in the future, while honouring the past, informs a recent media release from APM Terminals. At APM Terminals Mumbai, the equipment we use is respected – even revered – by the people that commission it,useitand, whenthetimecomes, sayfarewelltoit.

Our Mumbai terminal – also known as Gateway Terminals India (GTI) – is continuing its major Fit for Future project, which will see the terminal increase capacity by 10%, to 2.18 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit). Massive infrastructure upgrades will mean the terminal – India's busiest – will have the reach to handle the largest vessels that call Nhava Sheva's Jawaharlal Nehru port with the arrival of 23-container-outreachcranes. But while we're focused on the future, ‘bringing our hearts and brains to the game’ means that our people care enough about their work to also acknowledge significant achievements –andattachments–formedinthepast.

That's why, when five quay cranes at GTI were due for decommission, the workforce turned outindrovestosayfarewelltotheinfrastructurethathas servedthecompany, andourcustomerswell.

Sunay Mukerjee, Chief Operating Ofcer, APM Terminals Mumbai, said the decommissioning was“anemotionalmomentforthefrontlinecolleaguesat GTI.”

In a message to APM Terminals global organisation he wrote: “This morning, Berth 1 at GTI closed for operations as we start the massive Fit for Future project.” Offline, he confessed that there were few dry eyes on the dock as the Ship-to-Shore Cranes 1-5 performedtheirfinalmoves.

“In Indian tradition, equipment and tools are considered very sacred. Workers revere the machines which bring success and prosperity in professional life,” hesaid.

Saying goodbye to the cranes was akin to “saying goodbye to a retiring colleague who has been with us throughoutourjourneytoexcellence,”saidMukerjee.

The transformation at APM Terminals Mumbai will

accelerate the terminal's ability to accommodate larger vessels and bring economiesofscale.

In addition, as Mukerjee points out, “We are making our terminal safer, better, and bigger. We can achieve this in large part because of the dedication of our people, who demonstrate an exemplary work culture to serve our customers and to keep Safety at the coreofouroperations.”

Remarkableachievement

This safety culture is demonstrated by the 500, and counting, incident-free days chalked up at the terminal projectsite.

"This is a remarkable feat considering the nature of the work and dealing with the large equipment and machineatthesite,”saysMukerjee.“Thisistheresultof our work culture of taking ownership, following safety protocols & procedures, teamwork, and commitment undertheablesupportofthemanagement."

Agriculture exports up 10% to $21.8 bn in April-January

NEW DELHI - Exports of agricultural and processed food products rose by 10% to $ 21.79 billion during the first ten months of the current fiscal (2022-23) compared to the sameperiodlastyear, drivenbyaspikeinshipment ofrice, fruits and vegetables, livestock and dairy products. This comes atatimewhenIndia’s merchandise exports shrank by 6.59% to $32.91 billion on year in January, 2023 because of the slump in global trade and a moderation in domestic investment, and consumption demands. Cumulatively, however, during April-January 2022-23, the country’s merchandiseexportsrose8.51%to$369.25billion.

According to the Directorate General of Commercial IntelligenceandStatistics, thevalueofBasmatiriceexports during April-January (2022-23) rose by more than 41% on yearto$3.8billionfrom$2.7billioninthepreviousyear.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in its February, 2023 crop outlook has stated “India remains the most competitively-priced source for Asian rice,”. India’s broken-kernel rice was quotedat$435/tonnelastmonth.

“Strong global demand and competitive pricing have ensured surge in rice exports in the current fiscal and adherence to quality parameters has resulted in significant demand for Indian rice with the grain being shipped to more than 75 countries,” M Angamuthu, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Development Authority (APEDA)toldFE.

Merchandise & services exports would touch $ 750 bn this year : Piyush Goyal

Cont’d from Pg.3

Highlighting the government’s efforts in bringing quality consciousness, he informed that the number of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) have grown by over four times and now stands at about 440 products. He said that it will grow upto 2000 in next two years and help the country in achieving its Zero Defect, Zero Affect aspiration.

Appreciating the country’s business ecosystem as stable and investor-friendly, the Minister informed that many many companies are in talks with India for investing in the semiconductor chain.

Responding to a question on India achieving the highest export figure in the past year, the Minister said that it was the result of a deep-dive analysis and extensive planning where India’s capabilities were thoroughly assessed, new markets were sought out, districts, especially remote ones were

empowered to become export hubs and all Indian Missions abroad were effectively leveraged to promote trade, technology and tourism.

The Minister noted that last year, the merchandise and service trade had crossed USD 650 billion. Goyal noted that the transformational initiatives undertaken by the Government over the last decade, such as the Swachh Bharat Mission, electrification of around 35 million homes in rural India, creation of a robust power grid, housing for all, free healthcare for over 500 million people had held India in good stead to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic.

On semi-conductor production in India, the Minister said many companies were already in dialogue for investing in India because of India’s stability and investor-friendly business ecosystem.

Quality control : Govt to issue measures to stop imports of sub-standard goods

NEW DELHI : The Government will come up with as many as 58 quality control orders (QCOs) for products such as aluminium, copper items and household electrical appliances in the next six months, in a move aimed at containing import of the sub-standard goods and boost domestic industry, a senior government official said. The department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) is working hard to promote manufacturing of high quality products in the country.

"Since 1987, only 34 QCOs have been issued. But now we are coming up with 58 QCOs in the next six months. The main objective is to stop import of sub-standard goods. These mandatory norms will be for domestic and foreign players," Joint Secretary in the DPIIT Sanjiv told PTI.

There will be 315 product standards under these orders. The items, under these orders, cannot be produced, sold/traded, imported and stocked unless they bear the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) mark.

"These QCOs will be notified within a year after following due process," he added.

He said that the move would also help in providing global markets for domestic goods. In order to facilitate smooth implementation of these orders, particularly for micro and small industries, provisions for additional time periods to get BIS licences and upgrade their testing facilities are being contemplated, he added.

Similarly, exemption to very micro units (investment in plant and machinery up to Rs 25 lakh) is being contemplated on a case to case basis.

"With the notification of CCOs, manufacturing, storing and sale of non-BIS certified products are prohibited as per the BIS Act 2016," the official said.

The violation of the law can attract a penalty of up to two years of imprisonment or with fine of at least Rs 2 lakh for the first offence which increases to Rs 5 lakh minimum for the second and subsequent offences.
