Keyhighlights:

• Resilient business performance over last two years has enabled the Company to reduce debt. As of 31st March 2023, the Company has a consolidatednetcashofRs.604Cr.

• RevenueforFY23declined5.3%YoYfrom19,062Crto 18,051Cr.However,theGrossProfitoversameperiod increased 7.7% from 3,476 Cr to 3,744 Cr. Decline in revenue is largely on account of ocean freight rate decline, which is mostly a pass through in LCL business and hence a similar decline in operating expenses is also visible, barring impact on FCL business and investments in new trade lanes, which wouldbelossmakinginitially.LCLyieldaspresented in monthly update (slide 19) has remained almost same from Apr’22 to Mar’23, despite significant reductioninOceanFreightduringtheperiod.

• The volumes continue to remain lower in the flagship international supply chain business due to reduced global trade. Most leading international forwarders have reported 5% to 17% YoY drop in volumes in the quarter ending March 2023. In comparison, our volumes are down 7% YoY in LCL and remained flat YoY in FCL for the quarter ending March. Post February, we witnessed a much stronger March, but April has again been weaker. We now estimate volumepickuptohappenwiththepeakseason,which usuallystartsinJuly.

• Our standalone numbers represent the India ISC business. During Q4FY23, the standalone revenue hasdeclinedby55%YoYfromRs.950CrinQ4FY22to Rs. 428 Cr in Q4FY23, while the Gross Profit over the same period has declined by just 2% YoY. This highlightstherobustperformanceofthebusinessina falling freight rate environment, essentially protectingthemarginsataGrossProfitlevel.

• The company intends to revive profitability in

international supply chain business by increasing volumes and reducing SG&A. Yields are expected to remainrangeboundwithshorttermdeclinedrivenby competitivepressureandbouncebackwithimproved operatingparametersincludingutilisationandshare of40feetcontainers.

• Increased SG&A is on account of inflation as well as business expansion, as we continue to invest in people and capabilities to build new products and trade lanes. There are also one-off cost items. However, we are also seeing positive impact of cost rationalisation being driven through automation and processimprovement.Thiswilloffsetcostsincoming quarters, and we estimate SG&A costs to be lower in followingquarters.

• Company intends to offset Gross Profit impact on account of FCL, which contributes to 30% of the total, by way of volume growth once trade environment is normalised. In LCL, yields have remained more stable as freight costs represent smaller share incosts.

• The express business operations are now best in industry and with mega hubs in place, we expect revenue and margins to gradually expand. Contract Logistics business continues its strong performanceandispoisedforstronggrowthinFY24. Shashi Kiran Shetty, Founder and Chairman, Allcargo Group said, “Our focus on technology continues to drive our long-term strategy. Record handling of iron ore in a single day at DPA, Kandla Port

Domestic Container manufacturing : CONCOR impacted due to slow pace

NEW DELHI: India’s bid to become a new destination for cargo container manufacturing is yet to gather speed with Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR), India’s biggest buyer of steel boxes, lamenting that the ecosystem for making containers was “taking time” and a resultant shortage of containers has become a big “constraint” in its plan to grow the local business to neutralise the sluggishness in the export-import trade.

Theideatomakecargocontainers locally was taken after India’s exportimporttradesufferedahugeshortage of steel boxes in the wake of the pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions. It was also aimed at cutting India’s dependence on China, the world’s largest maker of containers, in the face of a flare-up alongtheborder.

CONCOR placed orders with local firms including Bharat Heavy ElectricalsLtd,Braithwaite&CoLtd, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd and APPL Containers Pvt Ltd, for manufacturing some 19,000 containers under the Atma Nirbhar Bharatinitiative.

“But the ecosystem development is still taking time. The container manufacturing is not goingatthepacewhichweexpected and which we want. So, there is a shortage of domestic containers,” Mr. V Kalyana Rama, Chairman andManagingDirector,CONCOR told analysts during the fourth quarter and annual results earningscallon19May.

Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw told Parliament in April that CONCOR was “facing some problems in supply and procurement ofdomesticcontainers”.

CONCOR, Vaishnaw said, had placedordersfor19,000containerson seven indigenous container manufacturers located in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Punjab,Maharashtra,andGujarat.

Till 31 March 2023, about 500 containers have been delivered to CONCOR, Vaishnaw told Lok Sabha on5April.

Stagnating trade and a ballooning surplus of shipping containers, following easing of pandemic era supply chain constraints, has led to a collapse in global newbuild container output, which is forecast to slump to its lowest level in 14 years, said Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd, a London-based independent maritimeresearchconsultancy.

Kalyana Rama at CONCOR said that India’s export-import scenario was“notveryencouraging”.

“The Indian exports are under strain, like handicrafts are not going andmerchandiseexportsareless.

Except primary agro exports, other exports are less, and a lot of empty-container inventories are buildingupinIndia,”hesaid.

With the export-import volumes facing headwinds as Western economies grapple with an impending recession, CONCOR is banking on domestic trade to drive growth.

“We are doing very well in the domestic sector. This is the third year

where we could see good growth in domestic business. On the revenue side,wegrewby25percentandonthe volume side by almost 15 percent. This year (FY24) also we are working out to grow in the same manner. But the main constraint is container availability,”KalyanaRamastated.

The shortage of domestic containers has hampered CONCOR’s plantorampupshipmentofcementin steel boxes, a business it had entered recentlyandhasshowngoodtraction.

CONCOR transported some 3,800 containers loaded with cement last year with March alone accounting for about800containers.

“There is a lot of interest. The business has stabilised, but shortage of containers is a major issue. So, we are not really pushing it very fast. We require 25,000 more containers. But the Indian container manufacturing industry is yet to pick up. So, we are working in a balanced way,”KalyanaRamaremarked.

“Asofnow,weareabletomaintain oursupplylines,buttogrowfasterwe requiremorecontainers.

So, we are working on different aspects like getting some containers onlease,”hesaid.

CONCOR is also “working on” runningdoublestackcontainertrains on the domestic sector to improve margins.

Despite the slow pace of manufacturing and delivery, CONCOR will place orders for more containers to encourage new manufacturers to enter the sector by tapping the interest generated in the business,headded.

Steel demand to surge 7-9% in FY24 on Govt’s infra boost, export recovery: India Ratings

MUMBAI: India’s steel demand is set for a 7% to 9% surge in the 2024 fiscal year, driven by Government infrastructure spending and robust domestic consumption, India Ratings andResearch(Ind-Ra)said.

The forecast marks a bullish outlook for the sector, buoyed by an expected demand boost from election-drivenGovernmentprojects, and the end-user industries including construction, automobile manufacturing,andengineering.

Additionally, the Government’s removal of a 15% export duty in November 2022 is likely to stimulate export demand, making Indian steel

more globally competitive and widening market access for the domestic steel producers, the agency stated.

“The projected steel demand growth for FY24 reflects a positive sentiment in the industry, underpinned by Government infrastructure spending and a rebound in domestic and export demand,” said Rohit Kumar Gupta, Vice President and Head of ResearchatInd-Ra.

However, the agency also warned of potential challenges from global macro trends and stricter environmental policies, and a

softening of raw material prices due tobalanceddemand-supplydynamics and China’s policy to maintain low ironoreprices.

Despite anticipated volatility in commodity prices and debt-led capital expenditure in FY24-FY25, Ind-Ra projects a slight uptick in steel players’ margins from the previous year, maintaining a stable rating outlook for its rated entities forFY24.

The sector recorded a strong 12% YoY growth in FY23, outstripping capacity additions and pointing to a favourable demand-supply balance, theagencynoted.

Adani Ports Q4 reports 5% increase in net profit around Rs 1,159 Cr

AHMEDABAD : Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd has reported 5% increase in net profit at Rs 1,159 crore for the quarter ending March 31, 2023. It reported net profit of Rs 1,103 crore in the year-ago period.

The company’s revenue from operationsrose40%toRs5,797crore in Q4FY23 as against Rs 4,141 crore in Q4FY22. Adani Ports’ scrip on BSE closed 0.4% lower at Rs 734.3. For FY23, the APSEZ Board has recommended a dividend of Rs 5 per share, which implies a payout of around Rs 1,080 crore for thecompany.

“FY23 has been a stellar year for

APSEZ in operational as well as financial performance. The company has overachieved against its highestever revenue and EBITDA guidance provided at the beginning of the year. Our strategy of geographical diversification, cargo mix diversification, and business model transition to a transport utility is enabling robust growth,” said Karan Adani, CEO and whole-time DirectorofAPSEZ.

“Over the last 5 years, APSEZ’s revenue and EBITDA have grown at a CAGR of 16-18%, while the company’s domestic market share jumped 800bps to 24% in FY23. APSEZ did record investments of

aroundRs27,000croreinFY23,which includes six major acquisitions totaling around Rs 18,000 crore and organic capex of around Rs 9,000 crore. These investments were primarily financed through internal accruals and the cash and cash equivalents held with the company. As a result, gross debt to fixed asset ratiohasdeclinedsharplyfrom80%in FY19 to around 60% in FY23. Theinvestmentsmadealongwiththe five bid wins during the year, will enable APSEZ to achieve its targeted cargovolumesof500MMTin2025and speed up the transition of the business model to a transport utility,” addedKaranAdani.

NMPA targets 51 million tonnes cargo handling in 2023-24

MANGALURU: New Mangalore port Authority (NMPA) achieved cargo traffic of 41.42 mt in 2022-23, representing5.4percentgrowth.

The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) aims to handle 51 million tonnes (mt) of cargo in 2023-24, according to Chairman, AVRamana. “We want to achieve not lessthanRs.400croreofprofitduring theyear,”hesaid.

Mangaluru, he said the port had reportedoneofitsbestperformances by achieving cargo traffic of 41.42 mt during 2022-23, which represents 5.4percentgrowth.

The port handled 1.65 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers in 2022-23, against 1.50 lakh TEUs in 2021-22. It had targeted handling 3 lakh TEUs of containersinthecurrentfinancialyear.

India’s growth momentum likely to be sustained in 2023-24, says RBI

MUMBAI: On the back of sound macroeconomic policies and softer commodity prices, India’s growth momentumislikelytobesustainedin 2023-24 in an atmosphere of easing inflationary pressures, said the Reserve Bank‘s annual report released on Tuesday. It, however, added that slowing global growth, protractedgeopoliticaltensionsanda possible upsurge in financial market volatility following new stress events in the global financial system could posedownsideriskstogrowth.

“On the back of sound macroeconomic policies, softer commodity prices, a robust financial sector, a healthy corporate sector, continued fiscal policy thrust on quality of government expenditure, and new growth opportunities stemming from global realignment of supply chains, India’s growth momentumislikelytobesustainedin 2023-24 in an atmosphere of easing inflationarypressures,”itsaid.

The RBI’s Annual Report for 2022-23, a statutory report of its

Central Board of Directors, further said its monetary policy remains focused on withdrawal of accommodation to ensure that inflationprogressivelyalignswith the target, while supporting growth. “With a stable exchange rate and a normalmonsoon—unlessanElNino event strikes — the inflation trajectory is expected to move down over 2023-24, with headline inflation edging down to 5.2 per cent from the average level of 6.7 per cent recorded lastyear,”thereportsaid.

New Mangalore Port’s Container cargo gets boost

MANGALORE: New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) recorded one of the best performances in container cargo handling in 2022-23 with its handling of 1.65 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) as against1.52lakhTEUsin2021-22.

Stakeholders from the sector feel that the regular calling of feeder vessels, introduction of a mainline service and efficiency improvement are some of the factors for growth in containercargoatNMPA.

export-import Cell of trade body KCCI said that modern infrastructure at the integrated container terminal and a dedicated berth for containers have helped reduce the vessel stay at berth from the earlier 48 hours to an average22-30hoursnow.

Sequeira said Mangalore can now boast of a direct Jebel Ali sailing with a transit time of only 7-8 days against the earlier 17-21 days. A direct connection from Bangladesh promises the prospects of pulses to

arrive at Mangalore and reach their market hubs in and around Bengaluruinsteadofarrivingatports such as Chennai, Tuticorin and NhavaSheva.

Stating that New Mangalore has successfully tapped the traditional cargoes such as reefer, sea food, cashew and coffee, Sequeira said the challenge now remains to tap the huge potential lying in the hinterland regions of Bengaluru, Mysuru, Davangere, Haveri, Hubballi, and northernpartsofKerala.
