Friends, employees, and chamber members came out to Congratulate Dr. Ben and Heather Hulse of Salem Smiles, as February’s Business of the Month.

Dr. Benjamin Hulse came to Salem after having served in the U.S. Army as a dental captain. He pursued and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa in 2006.

Dr. Hulse was a member of the unit responsible for hospital dentistry at Landstuhl regional Medical Center, the biggest military hospital outside of the U.S. Due to this additional experience, Dr. Hulse is trained in advanced cardiac life support and is licensed for

sedation.

“I don’t have to refer many things out, “comments Dr. Hulse, “I feel pretty comfortable to treat most diagnosis that walk through my door.”

Dr. Hulse and his wife Heather are active members of the Chamber and Women in Business South Utah County. They participate in many community and chamber events and sponsor many activities in our communities including the upcoming Spanish Fork Salem Unplugged.

Mark your calendar for Spanish Fork’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt Spanish Fork Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and Spanish Fork City will host the 2014 Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 19 this year at the Spanish Fork Sports Park West Fields.

Many local area businesses sponsor and support this local event for our community’s children. Prizes, grab bags, and 10,000 colorful stuffed eggs make this a fun event for young and old. The Easter Bunny, Miss Spanish Fork Royalty, Mayor Steve Liefson and the City Council will be on hand to meet and greet the public.

Sponsors are still being accepted. The Chamber relies on business partners and members to help provide a quality experience for young and old. The Chamber will advertise sponsors on TV, Newspapers, on the city website, chamber

website and all marketing materials.

Triple T opens St. George location On February 26, 2014 Triple T Heating and Cooling held a ribbon cutting for their new St. George Location. With over 50 people in attendance, Triple T hosted a tour of their fabrication shop and offices, as well as a chance for guests to visit and network with one another.

Triple T is a member of the St George Chamber of Commerce as well as two of the BNI networking groups, who were present to show their support. Triple T are also a long time member of the Spanish Fork Chamber of Commerce with their President, Brad Tanner, serving as Past President on the Board of Directors.

Residents get informed at ‘Bills and Bagels’ Spanish Fork law makers speak at Legislature event Debbie Balzotti CORRESPONDENT

“It’s critical for members of our community to get information and get involved,” said program moderator Kevin Johnson, CEO of Mountain View Hospital.

“Our topic of education today is vital. We need to be concerned about taking care of the needs in our area and that takes involvement on the local community level.”.

More than 200 people attended “Bills and Bagels” on Saturday morning at the Nebo School District Office. Speakers included: Matthew Holland, President of Utah Valley University; Becky Lockhart, Speaker of the House; and Representative Francis Gibson, Chair of the Education Committee. Representatives Mike McKell and Marc Roberts gave legislative updates. Senator Diedre Henderson was out of town and unable to attend.

The event was hosted by the Spanish Fork/Salem, Payson and Springville Chambers of Commerce.

The morning began with a Magleby’s Fresh breakfast buffet sponsored by Central Utah Clinic.

Adena Campbell, one of the organizers of the event, is an active precinct chair for Spanish Fork Precinct 15. She believes inviting law makers to speak at small local gatherings during the legislative session is a good idea.

“It helps citizens become more informed during the session if they will take the opportunity and become empowered,” said Campbell. “There are tons of bills going through right now and education always has a lot of bills we need to learn about.”

Cary Hanks, Executive Director of the Spanish Fork/Salem Area Chamber of Commerce agreed.

“We are sponsoring this to give the public a chance to hear what our local legislators have to say about education which is important to all of us,” Hanks said.

his university’s direction, needs and role in Utah County.

“First, I’d like to say I’m impressed with the great level of participation. I’m also impressed that we began with the Pledge of Allegiance,” said Holland. “Our values are where they ought to be and in support of those core ideals and principals we have established the Center for Constitutional Studies at UVU. I’d like to announce that in the spring we will have Dallin H. Oaks speak on religious liberty and it will be interesting to hear him speak on a broader civic platform.”

Holland then talked about his passion of finding support for increased funding at UVU. He cautioned that we don’t want to have runaway tuition in our state. With the school’s rapid growth from community college to state college to university during the last decade, funding has fallen further behind.

“We have been the low cost leader of education in the state but with our growth and desire to maintain a high level of quality, we have gotten dangerously lean,” said Holland. “We need more equitable funding. We are set to rise to a little north of 30,000

students and we predict we will have 43,000. We have to address the issue of equity this year. It is a key issue for higher education and the window is now.”

Speaker Lockhart then addressed the audience and continued discussing the topic of equity in higher education.

“The Utah County delegation has felt strongly about equity,” said Lockhart. “We understand and really get that it’s not fair for Utah State to get $8,000 per student and UVU to get close to $3,000 per student.

President Holland understands how education has to be delivered and has been a leader in online courses and flipped classrooms.”

Lockhart then talked about HB131, the Public Education Modernization Act which Representative Francis Gibson is sponsoring.

“I’d like to dispel the rumors about HB 131,” said Lockhart. “I have a tall stack of papers from concerned teachers. I will respond to most of their letters but let me say that this bill is not about just putting an iPad in the hands of every kid. We are focusing on the best way of delivering education. It will take time and money to have the

bandwidth needed and we can’t forget professional development which will take twelve to eighteen months.

This will be an ongoing multi-year funding. We want to send the message that this is where we are headed.”

Representative Gibson began with a compliment to the rows of teens at the back of the room that had come from their Government and Politics class at Salem Hills High School.

As Chairman of the House Education Committee he hears from many of the 38,000 people he represents as he considers the more than 100 education bills.

“We need to focus on skills and technology but also on critical thinking and creativity,” said Gibson. “We need to continue to think outside the box.

In Utah County we have more business license applications than the states of Idaho and Wyoming combined. We have a lot of creative ideas here.”

He commented on Senate Bill 103 which recently passed to allow local school boards to take four days for teacher professional development. Gibson reminded the audience that eight days were taken away in 2008.

“I agree that there should

be time for teachers to get professional development.

We require doctors, lawyers and even realtors to have it,” he said.

Representative Mike McKell commented, “Outside of balancing the budget, education is the biggest issue we address.” He then discussed some of his bills on other topics.

Representative Marc Roberts talked about his bills and added, “I’m glad to see the students here. As one of the youngest legislators on the hill I enjoy it when they visit. I found a picture of the senate in 1981, the year I was born, and there are still some senators there.”

As the students from Salem Hills High School exited the room, they talked about the issues affecting

them.

“I’m in the Government and Politics concurrent enrollment class and I love it,” said Courtney Christensen, 17. “I like that my grade is directly related to the work I do and not just on an AP test at the end. I want to go into elementary education so I’m interested in the direction individualized education is going.”

Spencer Weakley, 17, is a classmate of Christensen.

He was surprised to learn that funding for UVU was so much lower than other universities in the state.

“I am a senior and plan on attending Utah State,” said Weakly. “I had no idea that UVU’s funding was so much lower. I agree the funding should be equalized for all t he schools.”

Wonki Wands: New Giant Bubble Toy Wands can make bubbles up to 40-feet long

Wonki Toys, LLC, a new Utah toy maker launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign in February for its new Wonki Wands giant bubble-making kit that allows adults and children to create enormous, long-lasting bubbles—some as large as 40 feet long.

The Wonki Wands bubble kit includes two patent-pending Wonki Wands and a bottle of Wonki Bubble Potion, a special, proprietary solution that allows bubble lovers to create enormous, long-lasting bubbles. The owners of Wonki Toys LLC and the product’s inventors are the wife and husband team of Dee Loveless and Roger Fullerton. They created Wonki Wands and Wonki Bubble Potion when they purchased a homemade bubble wand kit at a local fair. The homemade kit didn’t work very well, so Dee and Roger decided to see if they could improve the design and especially the solution; and they did.

They now believe they have created the best bubble blowing toy on the market. “I’ve always loved blowing bubbles with my children and grandchildren, but this is a completely different experience,” said Dee Loveless. “I haven’t seen anything like it. Our bubbles are so big and so

fun. Everywhere we take them people flock to see the enormous bubbles. We want everyone to experience the same kind of joy we do every time we go bubbling.”

After months of development, Loveless and Fullerton have perfected their product, filed for a patent, and passed safety testing at a CPSC-accredited testing lab. And now Wonki Toys is now ready to purchase the first production run. The company launched their Kickstarter campaign to help them fund a bottling plant and the first production run.

“We are ready to go,” said Fullerton. “We have put months of work into getting Wonki Wands to where are they are now, and we are so excited to see the joy and laughter they will bring to kids and families. That’s why we are doing this.”

After the completion of the Kickstarter campaign, Wonki Toys will begin selling Wonki Wands bubble kits and replacement bottles of Wonki Bubble Potion on its website: www. wonkitoys.com. The Spanish Fork Fiesta Days Rodeo takes place every July and has been a Fiesta Days Tradition for more than 70 years. World champions com-
