Chamber President & CEO’s Message Dear Friends, As we continue to confront the daily challenges of the coronavirus, the effects of this disease are becoming more apparent and are undoubtedly far reaching.

There is a lot of negative that I could point to and share with you; however, I would like to instead talk about a few of the amazing experiences and conversations that I have been privileged to be a part of. During the past several weeks, I have been emailing and calling many of our businesses. Most of these wonderful people are truly hurting, yet through the course of conversation, many are asking me how they can help other businesses around them.

A few weeks ago, I was speaking on the phone with a gentleman who I know had not been able to go to work for several weeks. His line of work dovetails with the hospitality industry, which has been hit especially hard. I was asking him how he and his family were holding up, and he of course mentioned that things were stressful but that his family wanted to help make a difference because he knew that others were hurting worse. He asked me which of the restaurants in the city could use some help because he and his family were committed to eating out at least once a week to try and help. I was touched, to say the least.

Another example stands out as well. While posting on one of our social media pages, I came across the owner of a local restaurant who was trying to help make a difference. He was visiting restaurants other than his own and ordering food for his family. While there, he was posting about that restaurant’s delicious food and any current discounts that they were offering.

Nowhere in any of his posts did I see any mention of his own restaurant. He was selflessly putting his own interests aside to try and help another. In fact, he was even going so far as to use his ordering connections to try and help people obtain hard-to-get items that are selling out in stores. He was selling these items at regular supermarket prices. What a great example of who we are as a community!

There are many more stories just like these. We are an amazing people who are inherently selfless. It is in our culture to look after others. We have been described with such words as “unique” and “different.”

Indeed, we are, and because of this I have no doubt we will overcome the challenges that lie ahead. I am proud to live, work and raise my family here. I believe we have a shared vision of what we want our community to be that will long outlast this pandemic. Stay safe and healthy.

2019 Outstanding Business of the Year Mountainland Technical College Mountainland Technical College, which provides trades and technology educational programs for students in Utah, Summit and Wasatch counties, has been named the 2019 Business of the Year by the Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce.

Mountainland Technical College, also known as MTECH, offers more than 50 programs in areas including automotive technology, culinary arts, cosmetology, health care, transportation, manufacturing, computer systems and welding. Its main campus is located at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi; it also has campuses in Orem, Provo and Spanish Fork along with satellite campuses in Heber City, Park City, Kamas and Coalville. It is part of the Utah System of Technical Colleges.

MTECH’s mission is “to enhance the employability of individuals through market-driven career and technical education.” The college offers low-cost tuition to adults and there is no tuition for high school students, but they must be at least 16 years old and a junior in high school to apply.

“We’re trying to help people better their lives through education,” said MTECH President Clay Christensen.

MTECH works closely with local businesses to ensure its educational offerings are providing students with the training and skills needed by area companies. Corporate sponsors serve on advisory committees for the college’s programs to provide continuous input on what skills are needed in the workforce and what jobs are available.

Christensen said there is currently a large demand for the trades, adding that MTECH’s apprenticeship programs have doubled in size during the last two to three years.

To help fill the need, MTECH’s new Trades and Technology Building is being constructed next to the college’s Lehi campus. The 89-000-square-foot, two-story building will house nine of MTECH’s trades and technology programs: Automated Manufacturing, Precision Machining, Automotive Technology, Diesel Mechanics, Welding Technology, Digital Media, Mobile Development, Web Programming and Development and Information Technology Technician.

The building is set to open for classes this fall. “We have Sept. 18 scheduled as our ribbon cutting. As of right now, we’re on track for that,” Christensen said.

The new structure is being built bye SIRQ Construction in Lehi. Christensen said the company foresaw that obtaining materials might become difficult as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, so it ordered many items in advance and is storing them until needed, keeping the construction project on schedule.

Most of MTECH’s trades programs are currently housed in Orem or Spanish Fork; the new building will bring that training closer to students in the north end of the county.

MTECH provides educational opportunities for local businesses through its Custom Fit program. Based at the Lehi campus, Custom Fit receives funding from the state legislature each year that is used to provide customized training for local businesses. The state funding covers up to 50 percent of the training cost, with businesses paying the remaining amount.

Businesses can contact MTECH and request training in a certain area or on a specific topic and MTECH then finds an instructor, who could be from MTECH’s staff or from a different area of the country. Trainings are also conducted involving multiple businesses at once on topics they are all interested in such as human resources concerns. Chamber Members Golf Benefit The Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Cedar Hills Golf Club in Cedar Hills to provide chamber members with an incredible golf benefit. This benefit is free for Gold chamber members and higher.

To purchase this benefit on your own, a corporate membership costs $8,500, and playing a round of 18 holes as a foursome costs $170. However, as a chamber member, you can golf for free. Take your clients golfing and close the deal, make it an employee perk, or just break away from the office for a few hours and go take in 9 holes!

HOW DOES IT WORK? Call the chamber office at 801-901-6664 to set up your tee time up to two weeks in advance. The chamber will take it from there and get back with you. There’s only one foursome per day as a chamber, so plan ahead and book as soon as possible. Chamber Organizations & Resources CHAMBER AMBASSADOR COMMITTEE The Chamber Ambassador Committee is a group of chamber members who go the extra mile to welcome new chamber members, help current members become more engaged in chamber activities and honor businesses for their achievements.

Committee members visit all new chamber members and assist in events such as ribbon cuttings and grand openings. At chamber events, committee members greet all members and help them get to know each other.

The committee is also responsible for selecting candidates to be considered for the chamber’s Business of the Month award. Those candidates are then voted on by chamber members, and the Ambassador Committee visits the selected winner and presents the business with a plaque and banner.

UTAH IGNITE STEERING COMMITTEE The Utah Ignite Steering Committee is part of the Utah Ignite organization, which operates as a partnership between the Point of the Mountain Chamber of Commerce and US Ignite, a program under the National Science Foundation. Utah Ignite is one of about 30 Smart Gigabit Communities throughout the United States.

The goal is to create “smart communities” across the country that collaborate on ideas and share knowledge for the betterment of all residents that live in those areas. A smart community can be a local city or an entire state.

UTAH COUNTY BUSINESS SUMMIT One of Utah County’s top business events, the Utah County Business Summit was launched in 2014 with the intent of providing ongoing education about best business practices to local business professionals. It has since been held every year in the fall.

The summit is a half-day event beginning in the morning and ending after lunch. Critical insights are discussed and shared during the morning and attendees have the opportunity to network during lunch.

Each year, the summit attracts a group of exceptional speakers who each have unique perspectives and business insights and inspire, direct and counsel their audience. Past speakers have included Utah Jazz CEO Greg Miller, former NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell, KSL Radio host Maria Shilaos, Overstock.com Chairman and former CEO Johnathan Johnson, and prominent entrepreneur and businessman Brandon Fugal.

Businesses are also invited to showcase themselves as part of the summit’s vendor exhibition. The annual event is organized by the Point of the Mountain, American Fork and Pleasant Grove-Lindon chambers of commerce.

CONNECT 4 LUNCH Connect 4 Lunch is a highly focused, tri-chamber, monthly networking event involving business professionals from throughout the northern Utah County area. Attendees network in groups of no more than six over lunch.

These smaller group sizes allow business professionals of all types to get to know each other in a more meaningful way. Personal and professional experiences are shared and needs and ideas are discussed, all while a fantastic lunch is enjoyed. Those attending are invited to bring a door prize from their business to give away if they wish.

Connect 4 Lunch is held on the third Thursday of every month at various area restaurants. It is hosted by the Point of the Mountain, American Fork and Pleasant Grove-Lindon chambers of commerce. SARATOGA SPRINGS BUSINESS ALLIANCE Business is about relationships, and the Saratoga Springs Business Alliance helps local business owners foster these relationships. The SSBA offers luncheons four times a year at the Saratoga Springs City Office Building to provide local business owners with opportunities to network freely and effectively with each other.

The luncheons also feature guest speakers who discuss various topics of interest to local businesses.

Lehi Mayor’s Message I suspect for most of us, our greatest concern last December was filling open positions as we prepared for the upcoming year. The economy was strong, unemployment was almost nonexistent and whatever products we needed were easily accessible.

Not one of us anticipated the change that was rapidly approaching.

In January, we watched a new disease outbreak in Asia, and by mid-February, it had an official name: COVID-19. Soon after, we began to realize that the world was under the siege of a pandemic. We watched and our concern grew as health professionals, disease scientists and political leaders scrambled to determine the best course of action to combat this aggressive virus as it infiltrated the United States.

It is scary and heavily debated, but one thing has become certain: this virus was so hostile, it demanded respect, and preventative action had to take place based on the po-

tential of its most damaging path.

Health professionals and scientists needed time to prepare for what may come, and both the public and businesses were asked to deliver. I know that incredible sacrifices have been made. As a small business owner, I have been here with you in these very difficult times.

As of this writing, there is still much speculation as to the outcome and the timing of when life will return to normal, but it will. Please understand that. Lehi Economic Development Message In order to have a growing community, you need housing, retail and jobs. Lehi has seen unprecedented growth in all three areas over the last 10 years. While these growth indicators show Lehi is a thriving community, what makes this city a great place to live in and do business?

The Lehi City Council has set one overarching goal for the city: “Develop a cutting-edge, family-centric community.” This goal is what sets Lehi apart from any other community because the focus is on the residents. Healthcare Lehi hospital part of Intermountain Healthcare’s creation of national model for childrens health The pediatric population of Utah County is growing rapidly – in fact, some estimates predict that it will be equal to Salt Lake County’s by the year 2040. With this expected rise in the number of growing families, so too comes an urgent need for high-quality, comprehensive pediatric care.

As part of its quest to build the nation’s model health system for children, Intermountain Healthcare will be constructing Utah’s second Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi. The planned 38-acre campus near 3300 West and 2100 North will feature five floors, 66 beds, a three-story medical office building and 468,000 total square feet.

Pediatric care at the Lehi hospital will be delivered by a medical team integrated with the existing Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. Pediatric specialists at University of Utah Health will work together with Primary Children’s to bring the best pediatric care possible to the new campus.

Crews are expected to begin construction on the hospital later this year. Expected to open in 2023, the hospital will house services including: • Pediatric specialty trauma and emergency services • Pediatric and newborn intensive care units • Operating rooms and surgical services • Inpatient and outpatient behavioral and mental health services • A Safe and Healthy Families clinic • Sleep medicine services • Rehabilitation services • Specialty outpatient clinics • Imaging services Veteran Intermountain leader Lisa Paletta, RN, will serve as administrator of the Primary Children’s Lehi campus.

The new Primary Children’s Hospital campus was announced in January as part of Intermountain Healthcare’s unprecedented $500 million plan to create a national model for children’s health that will enhance the well-being of children in Utah and surrounding states for generations to come.

The model health system for children will include Intermountain’s extensive network of clinics and hospitals, Primary Children’s Hospital and its partnership with University of Utah Health, and community groups and organizations that help children. It will feature advancements in pediatric health research, innovation, community health outreach and state-of-the-art technology.

“This effort comes at a critical time, as the number of children served by Intermountain Healthcare continues to rapidly grow, and their needs continue to change and become more complex,” said Katy Welkie, CEO of Primary Children’s Hospital and vice president of Intermountain’s Children’s Health.

“To address the growing need for health issues facing children, we must create a new model of pediatric care that will cater to the unique challenges that we see across our large geographic area,” Welkie said. “In building the nation’s model health system for children,

we are positioning Utah as the home for the nation’s healthiest kids.”

Intermountain Healthcare has committed to funding half of the $500 million or more needed to complete the plan, and it has commissioned the Intermountain Foundation to seek the remaining funding through philanthropic support. This represents the largest commitment to the care and health of the region’s children since Primary Children’s was envisioned in the early 1900s.

Plans to create the model inspired a $50 million gift to the Intermountain Foundation from Gail Miller and the Miller family – the largest single gift the Miller family has given to any organization.

Gail Miller is owner and board chair of Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, which includes the Utah Jazz, and chair of the Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees.

“Intermountain Healthcare’s plan is impactful and innovative, and will improve our collective health through a finite focus on children,” Miller said. “Our family is committed to enriching lives and doing good in our communities. We understand from personal experience how important it is to have the highest quality healthcare available to address the needs of children. Our family absolutely recognized the need to be involved in this historic model health system.”

Business Unique restaurant opens to warm reception When Rick Salisbury chose Lehi as the location for his second Strap Tank Brewery, he had hope it would be well received by residents.

“With the growth in Lehi, I just thought it would be a great place, and actually there was no other sit-down restaurant in that location,” Salisbury said. “I thought it would be a great place close to the Point of the Mountain, so I thought I would draw business from Salt Lake and north Utah County.”

Housed in a unique brick, retro-style building at 3661 N. Outlet Parkway, the restaurant is perched on a bluff looking over Lehi and the Silicon Slopes area. It opened in August of 2019 and immediately was a hit.

“We actually did so much business up there that we couldn’t keep up with the new staff,” Salisbury said. “It was just overwhelming.”

The Lehi Strap Tank is similar in design and menu to Salisbury’s first Strap Tank location in Springville. It is also the second craft beer brewery to open in Utah County, the first being the Springville Strap Tank.

The name comes from the Strap Tank model number 2037 motorcycle that rolled off the Harley-Davidson assembly line in 1907. Today, a Strap Tank motorcycle considered the best unrestored example of the Strap Tank model is on display at Salisbury’s Legends Motorcycles, a museum of vintage motorcycles located next to

the Springville Strap Tank Brewery.

Inside the Lehi location is a rustic and fun atmosphere that Salisbury said was designed to be family friendly. The menu features specialty burgers, sandwiches, pizza and salads. It also includes meal selections for children and combo dinners designed to feed a family of four.

The Strap Tank creates a variety of craft beers including mainstays that are always available and new and seasonal brews that are rotated on and off the menu.

Saratoga Springs Mayor’s Message Our beautiful mountain and lakefront community in the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to grow in a smart and proactive manner to balance residential growth, attract commercial businesses and provide enhanced public amenities and recreational programs.

Construction of the city’s new Public Safety Building for police and court was completed at the start of 2020. This beautiful new facility sits directly adjacent to Patriot Park and is the first phase of a 26-acre municipal campus which will eventually include a new library, city hall and other amenities. With existing parks, Patriot Park, the municipal campus and land options, the city is looking at the potential for a 150-acre central park and municipal campus with the grandest views of Utah Lake and Mt. Timpanogos in the valley.

During the last year, multiple transportation improvements in Saratoga Springs were also completed, such as the widening of Redwood Road and the Continuous

Flow Intersection at Redwood Road and Pioneer Crossing. Both of these projects have provided great relief to east-west congestion as well as north-south traffic through the City of Saratoga Springs.

In addition to Redwood Road, the Utah Department of Transportation finished the Mountain View Corridor connection from SR-73 to 2100 North and I-15. This connection is the first phase of a multi-faceted interchange that will provide a whole new means of transportation to alleviate congestion through Saratoga Springs and provide a long-overdue alternate route to the bottleneck on I-15.

This growth is continuing to attract wonderful developments in our community, such the new Lake Mountain Middle School, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and several exciting new commercial developments. Some of these commercial projects include huge announcements like Costco. This anchor project is moving fast and on

track for completion this summer of 2020. Costco alone has generated an increased outpouring of interest from a variety of other businesses that are excited to be in the City of Saratoga Springs.

Transportation Completion of I-15 redesign project months away Lehi residents and others who live and work in northern Utah County will find I-15 construction-free by the end of the year as the Utah Department of Transportation’s Technology Corridor project comes to an end.

“We’re in the final stretch,” said Boyd Humpherys, UDOT project director for the Technology Corridor project. “We started construction in the summer of 2018 and now we’re in the final year. The project is scheduled to be complete in late 2020, and that’s still where we’re at.”

The Technology Corridor project has involved a major redesign of the I-15 area between Lehi’s Main Street and State Route 92. When completed, the project will have widened I-15 to six lanes in each direction and constructed 17 new bridges. The new pavement on the freeway is designed to last 40 years and the new bridges are designed to last 75 years.

The project also includes the creation of a one-way frontage road system between 2100 North in Lehi and S.R. 92. The frontage roads — one southbound and one northbound — will have two lanes each and enable traffic to easily access businesses on both sides of the freeway while also offering northbound-only and southbound-only freeway on-ramps and off-ramps.

Humpherys said these types of on- and off-ramps are

new to Utah but are used in other parts of the country. They will provide drivers with more options while easing the traffic load at the SR-92 and 2100 North interchanges.

“By placing these additional on- and off-ramps, drivers will have more access points, which will help disperse traffic and should reduce the number of vehicles concentrating at each interchange. It’s going to allow better access — and more access — to the freeway,” he said.

A new interchange is being constructed at S.R. 92. It has already been reconfigured from its original diverging diamond design to a more traditional diamond interchange design, Humpherys said. When completed, it will have multiple lanes allowing traffic on and off of I-15.

A new configuration at the 2100 North interchange will provide added traffic capacity and a new flyover southbound I-15 on-ramp as well as a planned future connection to the Mountain View Corridor.

Employees at businesses in the Technology Corridor project area expressed a desire to access their work using their bicycles; some businesses even have areas in their facilities where employee bikes can be stored.

“Our goal was to build pedestrian paths that connect to existing local and regional trails such as the Murdock Canal Trial and future connections. This improves connectivity and enhances safety throughout the corridor,” he said.

Designated bike and pedestrian paths are also being created along the frontage roads.

UDOT has coordinated with the Utah Transit Authority and these paths will increase access from the Lehi FrontRunner station to businesses along both sides of I-15.

The Technology Corridor is the last section of I-15 to be rebuilt and improved from Spanish Fork to the north end of Salt Lake County. Its completion will reduce the traffic bottleneck that has existed in the area, Humpherys said.

“It’s been good, and it will just continue to get better as we get more and more of these features done,” he said.

Saratoga Springs Economic Development Message Even in the midst of international impacts on the economy, the City of Saratoga Springs is continuing to move forward strongly with commercial development, transportation improvements and residential growth.

Saratoga Springs has been at the forefront of this residential growth year-over-year for the last 20 years, continually ranking in the top five along the entire Wasatch Front. The city’s current population is nearing 38,000 residents and growing far ahead of prior projections. This continued growth will translate into a 35 percent population increase over the next five years or 51,000 total residents. At this rate, Saratoga Springs’ population will nearly double in the next 10 years.

As we progress forward, Saratoga Springs is working with commercial developers and brokers to tell our story and demonstrate the unique dynamic of our city and the surrounding region. Our ability to tell this story played a significant role in Costco’s recent announcement to

build in Saratoga Springs, with the project still on track for completion during the summer of 2020.

Since the announcement of Costco, a wide variety of businesses have reached out to the city and local developers about opening new locations in our area. These include everything from additional big-box stores to mid-box stores, fast-casual dining to sit-down restaurants, and hotels, family entertainment, dance schools, medical services and more.

Getting to these businesses is now easier than ever. Saratoga Springs’s commercial district is home to a new interchange for Utah’s western freeway system, the Mountain View Corridor. The first phase of this multi-faceted intersection connects several municipalities to Interstate 15, Bangerter Highway and Redwood Road. It provides multiple outlets to Salt Lake City and the hub of Silicon Slopes. This interchange is also located next to the future home of two new medical facilities from Utah’s top hospital systems.

So, what does all of this growth

mean for economic development in Saratoga Springs?
