Can you believe we’re already halfway through the year? July marks the perfect time to pause, reflect, and maybe even reset. It’s a mid-year check-in—a chance to revisit the goals you set back in January, realign your path, and reconnect with what truly matters to you.

Summer’s warmth and longer days bring more than just sunshine—they offer renewed energy and motivation. Whether it’s taking that first step toward a long-held dream or simply spending more time doing what you love, July invites you to embrace growth and live with intention.

Let this season be about rediscovery—tuning into your authentic self, stepping out of your comfort zone, and creating space for personal transformation. With a bit of reflection and some fresh goals, summer can be a powerful catalyst for positive change.

Speaking of exciting growth… Brunswick Forest Living Magazine is thriving, and it’s all thanks to our incredible sponsors. These local professionals help us bring stories of our amazing neighbors and keep you in the loop about what’s happening in the Forest.

We’re also thrilled to welcome two new sponsors!

Inspire Brunswick Forest is launching our brand-new “Senior Spotlight” feature—look for the first article in August celebrating the wisdom and contributions of our senior residents.

Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity recently opened their Leland ReStore and has been wonderfully busy ever since. Now, they’re in need of donated items—so if that old couch or table needs a new home, give them a call!

As always, please support those who support us. Reach out to our sponsors for your home, health, or lifestyle needs.

And finally—get outside, soak up some sun, and let the energy of summer lift your spirits!

Ciao!

Debby Daigle Publisher ddaigle@bestversionmedia.com

Summer’s in full swing, and many weeks remain to revel in the season’s seemingly endless days. So, I hope you’re making the most of this time to enjoy the sunshine, be outdoors, reconnect with friends, and head off for some much-deserved travel.

Each month, we get to feature some residents in order to help you get to know your community a little better. This month, you’ll get to meet Michael and Robin Zalob. I had such fun learning about their story, and I think you will, too. Be sure to check out their article!

If you’re interested in being featured in an upcoming edition, I’d love to hear from you. The process is very simple, and it’s a great way to get your story out into the community.

As always, a huge thank you to our sponsors. They make this publication possible, and we could not do it without them. Enjoy this month’s edition of Brunswick Forest Living Magazine!

Keith Murray's Mission for CLEANER LIVING

Brunswick Water Filters is more than just a business—it's a local mission driven by passion, purpose, and pipes. At the helm is Keith Murray, a third-generation plumber whose journey began before he was even tall enough to reach the kitchen faucet. His father started the family plumbing business in 1982, and Keith was on job sites by age seven, learning the tools of the trade alongside the man who taught him everything he knows. In 2011, Keith took over the business—and just last year, he sold it to devote himself entirely to water filtration. Why? Because like many in the area, he was concerned about what was coming out of his own tap.

Brunswick Water Filters installs high-quality filtration systems for homes and businesses, eliminating harmful PFAS and GenX chemicals from local water supplies. For Keith, this work is personal. It’s about ensuring families don’t just drink clean water—they bathe in it, cook with it, and live with it safely. “We focus so much on diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyles,” Keith says, “but people often overlook the water they bathe in. Our skin is our largest organ—it absorbs everything. Clean water matters in more ways than people realize.”

The company’s mission is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves safe, high-quality water. Keith and his team are committed to tailoring each installation to fit their clients’ unique needs while addressing Brunswick County’s specific water quality challenges. It’s about more than just filters—it’s about

creating a safer, healthier, more sustainable future for everyone.

While Keith is an expert in filtration, his favorite part of the job might just be the people. Whether he’s answering questions, offering advice, or sharing a laugh with a neighbor, Keith brings the same warmth and integrity to each interaction that he brings to his work. “I still love putting systems together—honestly, it’s like adult Lincoln Logs,” he laughs. “But the best part is always meeting new people. Plumbing is just the beginning—connecting with folks is what makes the day fun.

Keith lives right here in Brunswick Forest with his wife, Jennifer, and their dog Maggie. Keith’s two college-aged kids are based in New York but love escaping the city to visit NC —and who wouldn’t, with a dog park nearby and some top-tier local restaurants just a short drive away? When he’s not working, Keith enjoys fishing, golfing, shooting, and cooking (rumor has it, he’s just as handy in the kitchen as he is with a wrench).

As a resident and business owner in the neighborhood, Keith has a special message for the community: “We live here, we work here, and we care about this place. If you ever have a question about your water or just want to see what filtered water really tastes like, come on by. We’re happy to help.”

the

protecting the one he now calls home. It’s not just about cleaner water. It’s about healthier lives, stronger neighborhoods, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing someone local is looking out for your well-being, one faucet at a time.

Like many other areas, Brunswick County has been impacted by PFAS contamination, from sources like industrial

FROM SHY TO SPOTLIGHT

Reilly Callaghan's YOUTH THEATRE PROGRAM

Kids Theater Program uses acting and improv for enhancing emotional intelligence and team spirit!

Theater offers an amazing alternative to Sports for enhancing such important life skills as clear articulation, active listening, compassion, being a good team player and most importantly emotional intelligence.

Reilly Callaghan, a graduate of UNCW’s theatre program worked and taught theater in New York before returning to Wilmington to set up reicalimprov.com for teaching theater to the youth of Wilmington.

Reilly Callaghan has been amazed at the transformation he has witnessed in the kids and youth that attend the theater programs and camps offered by him. “It is very satisfying to see kids who may have been quiet and shy coming in to then be talking nonstop and being very comfortable with exploring different emotions and perspectives- being empathetic.”

From “Stage Acting on Mondays”, to “Creative Drama Wednesdays” and “Improv Fridays”- Reilly offers a variety of after school programs and now summer camps as schools get out. Classes are typically offered around 4 or 5 PM and are well suited for kids 6-18.

Parents whose kids have attended Reilly’s acting classes have reported a noticeable increase in confidence, Self-Esteem and a love for theater. “This is one after school activity I never have to tell my kids to get ready for- they are raring to go”.

The workshops and camps always end with a staged production but what Reilly is most passionate about is the journey to that point. He is focused on creating an environment

that is safe, welcoming and allows every student to be themselves.

Today, social media can often make kids feel like they are “ordinary” and their life is “boring” relative to what they see and consume on social media. Reilly’s theater classes are a welcome and refreshing change from that pressure and allows the Wilmington Area youth to discover and accept themselves for their own unique self. They can then present themselves on and off stage as emotionally healthy individuals.

Putting on a show requires teamwork, and the actors and crew learn to rely on one another towards a common goal making them amazing team players.

Find out more about the programs and summer camps offered by Reilly at reicalimprov.com. Check out the video on the website to get a preview of how much fun the kids are having in these classes!

“If every kid realizes how special they are in their own way – they would approach life on a more confident footing.”

From the Classroom to Construction Michael & Robin have it Covered

When Michael and Robin Zalob moved to Brunswick Forest in 2008, the community was just beginning to take shape. With only 400 homes at the time, it was a close-knit neighborhood full of promise. Over the years, they watched it grow, but for both Michael and Robin, the most rewarding part of retirement wasn’t just settling into a new home—it was finding new ways to serve.

Michael’s journey to Brunswick Forest started long before retirement. Originally from Albany, New York, he built a successful career in dentistry after graduating from the University of Louisville. But before he ever filled a cavity, he earned an undergraduate degree in political science. Because what better way to prepare for a life of dentistry than studying politics?

Early in his career, Michael served two years in the U.S. Navy at sea, an experience that shaped his dedication to service. “The Navy taught me a lot about discipline, teamwork, and taking care of people,” Michael says.

“Those lessons stuck with me, and I’ve carried them into everything I’ve done since.”

That sense of duty didn’t fade after he left dentistry. In fact, it only grew stronger.

Today, Michael devotes much of his time to volunteering, particularly with WARM (Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry), a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates homes for low-income families in Brunswick County.

“We have an incredible team of about 30 retired residents,” Michael explains. “We come from all kinds of backgrounds, but we all have one thing in common—we want to give back.”

Michael and his Brunswick team, known as the Band of Brothers, tackle nearly every aspect of home rehabilitation, from carpentry and flooring to plumbing, electrical work, and accessibility

modifications like ramps and handicap-friendly bathrooms. Their work ensures that struggling families can continue to live safely and comfortably in their homes—no charge, no catch, just kindness.

“Sometimes, the conditions people are living in are heartbreaking,” Michael says. “But when we finish a project, knowing we’ve made a real difference—it’s incredibly rewarding.”

And you don’t need to be a handyman extraordinaire to join in. “Special skills aren’t needed,” Michael says. “They’ll train you, and honestly, after a few projects, most men are fascinated by what they can do.” Apparently, power tools are confidence boosters.

That commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2021, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper recognized the team as Volunteers of the Year for their outstanding contributions to WARM’s mission.

“We don’t do it for the recognition,” Michael says, “but it’s nice to know that what we’re doing matters.”

WARM is mostly staffed by volunteers, but it does rely on paid grant writers and yearly fundraisers to keep the mission alive and thriving. Beyond WARM, Michael has dedicated over a decade to volunteering with the Battleship North Carolina. He serves as part of the Friends of the Battleship, including a two-year tenure as Chairman from 2021 to 2023. Fun fact: When he first went to the ship to volunteer, he shared that he was a retired dentist from the Navy. They then opened up the ship's dentist clinic, which had not been opened since the ship had first docked there, and restored it to full functionality.

Michael also participates in the Living History Crew and serves as a tour guide, bringing the ship’s history to life for visitors.

© Best Version Media

"The battleship is a piece of history, and I love sharing it with people," Michael says. "It’s a way to honor those who served and keep their stories alive."

As if that isn't enough, Michael is also a member of the Brunswick County Civil War Roundtable, attending monthly gatherings with eight to ten other men for dinner and lectures on Civil War history.

“I never picked up golf,” Michael jokes. “So I figured I might as well stay busy doing something worthwhile.”

As it turns out, his partner in life is just as passionate about making a difference. Robin, who grew up in Queens, New York, spent over 30 years in education, including time as an elementary school principal. She holds two advanced degrees in education and administration and has brought those leadership skills into retirement.

Robin volunteers at New Hope Clinic, where she manages the volunteers—because once a principal, always a principal. She also finds time for more relaxing pursuits, like playing mahjong and perfecting her knitting (which, according to those in the know, is expert-level). Robin and Michael are both on their second marriages and have blended their families beautifully. Michael has a son and a daughter; Robin has two daughters. Between them, they have 14 grandchildren scattered across the Midwest. That’s enough grandkids to field two basketball teams and still have a cheering section.

When they’re not volunteering, playing bridge, or visiting the grandkids, Michael and Robin love to travel—especially by cruise ship. Their favorite travel style is arriving at the destination a week before the cruise departs, giving them plenty of time to explore. One particularly memorable adventure was a Viking Cruise from

France to Switzerland. “We like to ease into vacation mode,” Robin says. “Cruise ships are great, but a little pre-cruise wandering makes it even better.”

Their shared love of travel and service has created a retirement filled with purpose, joy, and the occasional sea breeze.

“We’ve been incredibly fortunate,” Robin reflects. “Family, travel, and giving back—those are the things that make life meaningful.”

As Brunswick Forest continues to grow, so does Michael and Robin’s impact. Whether they’re restoring homes, preserving history, or simply lending a helping hand, their retirement is anything but quiet. And for them, that’s exactly how it should be.

“I always say, if you’re lucky enough to retire, you’re lucky enough to give back,” Michael says with a smile. “And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Key Lime Pie

Quick and easy are two of my favorite words in the kitchen—and this key lime pie checks both boxes perfectly. Whether you're a seasoned baker or just starting out, this recipe is practically foolproof and delivers a sweet, creamy, tangy dessert that everyone will love. Made with just three main ingredients and a graham cracker crust, it’s the kind of dessert that feels impressive but couldn’t be simpler to pull off.

This pie has become my go-to for everything from summer barbecues to holiday gatherings. It’s light, refreshing, and comes together in minutes. Plus, I’ll share a few helpful tips to make sure it turns out perfectly every time. If you’ve ever been intimidated by making pie from scratch, this is the perfect place to start. Once you try it, you’ll see why it’s my favorite—and why I keep coming back to it again and again.

GRAHAM CRACKER PIE CRUST

© Best Version Media

TIP #1 - The secret to a crust that doesn’t fall apart, is to freeze the crust for 15 to 20 minutes before baking it.

INGREDIENTS FOR A 9 IN PIE CRUST:

11 whole graham crackers or 1 ½ cups

3 tablespoons brown sugar

5 tablespoons melted butter

INSTRUCTIONS:

Crush graham crackers in the bowl of a food processor or in a resealable plastic bag

Add sugar and pulse again or shake bag thoroughly.

Melt butter and add to mixture. Pulse or shake and mix until well combined.

Press crumbs into a pie plate. Use the bottom of a measuring cup or a glass to press firmly into the plate.

Chill pie in a freezer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Bake at 350F for 20 minutes or before crust browns.

Let rest at room temperature. As the crust cools, it will firm up.

INGREDIENTS FOR PIE FILLING:

TIP #2 – Don’t buy plain imitation lime juice, your pie won’t turn out as delicious.

½ cup Nellie & Joe's Key Lime Juice

3 egg yolks

12-ounce can sweetened condensed milk

zest from a fresh lime (optional)

whipped cream (for garnish, optional)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PIE FILLING:

Stir or beat the first three ingredients using an electric mixer, add the zest and stir once

Pour the mixture into the pie crust

Bake at 350F° for 20 minutes, let cool then put in the fridge to chill. Serve with whipped cream.

ROCK ON with CLAIRE

I first met Claire at our local craft show right here in Brunswick Forest, where I was behind my pottery booth trying not to knock anything over (always a risk with clay and clumsiness). Claire stopped by, complimented my work, and—much to my delight—became one of my most loyal customers.

As I wandered over to her booth, I was immediately struck by her stunning jewelry—earthy, elegant, and clearly crafted with heart. One look and I knew this wasn’t your average bead stringing operation. Naturally, I had to ask how she got started, and when she shared her journey from CPA to creative powerhouse, I knew our readers would love to hear it too.

Ten minutes into my first jewelry design class in the early 2000s, I knew I had found my passion. I had long been a fan of high-end craft shows but never expected to be on the selling side of a booth until that day. During that class, I knew creating jewelry was going to be part of my future. Soon I decided to take my work to the next level by turning it into a hobby business.

I was happy to finally discover my niche. Prior to this, during my career in Washington, DC as a CPA focused on management accounting, I had assumed that I lacked a creative side, despite my heritage. My namesake cousin (two generations removed) was a worldrenowned women’s fashion designer in the 1930s, 40s and 50s whose innovative designs continue to impact women’s clothing today. And my mother is a musician, artist and gifted seamstress who won awards In Maryland State Women’s Clubs for her wearable art creations using scraps of ultra suede as well as her paintings.

I primarily make necklaces and earrings, working with semiprecious stones, crystals and Czech glass, organic materials and minerals. My husband, David Long, and I have been avid travelers during our 30 plus years together. I purchased many of the components used in my jewelry during our extensive travels throughout the world. I also spent many an hour – and many dollars – at International Gem Show events around the DC area. As I roamed the aisles of the wholesale sections, rolling my suitcase of purchases behind me, my head was filled with ideas for pieces to make, and I would rush home to write down design ideas as they came to me.

After we purchased a building lot in the Cape Fear National neighborhood in early 2010, we designed and built our house, moving here in early 2012. We have eagerly embraced the less hectic, more casual lifestyle of coastal living, and my design style has evolved to reflect this different environment. The lack of local gem show events has also motivated me to work with components available locally, adding seed beads and shells to my offerings. Claire will be showcasing her gorgeous work at the juried 2025 Summer Art Market at the Leland Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, July 19 from 10 am to 3 pm. Stop by to see her

stunning, handmade jewelry that’s guaranteed to catch your eye. Looking to host a fun, no-pressure gathering? Claire brings the bling to you with home jewelry parties-perfect for girls’ nights, birthdays, or just because. She also works her magic on broken baubles, in case one (or more) of your treasured pieces needs a fix. Reach out to her at rockonbyclaire@yahoo.com-because even your jewelry deserves a second chance to shine.

I highly recommend stopping by the Summer Art Market—you’ll find treasures, stories, and maybe even a new favorite pair of earrings.

We moved to Brunswick Forest late August 2025 and it has been a true blessing for all of us. Not only have I met so many wonderful people, but my dogs have their own dog tribe that they get to play with. On our daily walks in Hazelbranch 2, we constantly run into our fur family and it is truly just amazing here.

My dogs fill my life with so much love and happiness. They make me laugh each and every day and I feel like I live at a comedy club! They are brother/sister and turned two years of age, December 2024.

Sangria, Lasagna, and a Goldilocks Night at Floriana

Visiting Floriana for the third time, this visit was extra special as we brought along some friends. Normally, it's just my husband and me enjoying the cozy outdoor balconies, but hey, when a friend suggests, who am I to say no?

We kicked off with some killer drinks. My sangria (check out the pic!) was hands down the best I've ever had – tasted as good as it looks.

For mains, I went for the branzino, and wow, the crispy skin was spot-on. Paired perfectly with lentils and spinach, they balanced out the crunch with silky smoothness.

Hubby dove into their famous lasagna, and it totally lived up to the hype. Our friends opted for the branzino and tortellini mignon in a creamy sauce – both winners. And those appetizers? Burrata and black gnocchi – no complaints there.

We don't usually do dessert if we've ordered apps, but this time we couldn't resist. Hubby went for tiramisu, one of his favs, I had the mousse, and our friends split a gelato – all big enough to share.

Service was top-notch, and the noise level hit the goldilocks balance... not too loud, not too quiet...just right.

TIP: Even though indoors is nice, if you can score a balcony table for two on a nice balmy evening, that gets my vote.
