When I think of summer, a few things instantly come to mind: the sound of laughter and music drifting from backyards, the smell of charcoal grills and freshly cut grass, and the unmistakable taste of softserve ice cream and juicy watermelon (though not necessarily together!).

While we can’t bring you those sensory delights through the pages of this magazine, we do our best with the tools we have—words and images. This month, we're excited to introduce you to Vivien Monnie, a vibrant resident known for her love of laughter, food, and fun. Her story is sure to bring a smile to your face.

We’re also pleased to welcome one of our newest sponsors, Kelli Delperdang of Ayes Cosmetic Tattooing Studio. Kelli’s work combines meticulous detail with a personal touch, helping clients enhance their natural beauty with confidence.

June’s calendar is packed with outdoor events perfect for enjoying with family and friends—don’t miss it!

As I sat down (yes, just two days before the deadline) to write this letter, I came across a short poem by Caroline May that struck a chord:

June, thy beauty is a snare, To waste time in visions rare; Of vain dreaming, oh, beware!

But maybe, just maybe, a little dreaming isn’t such a bad thing. Sometimes all you need is a warm evening, a blanket, and a sky full of stars to feel like everything’s just right.

And to all the dads in our community—whether you're a father, stepfather, grandfather, or a father figure—Happy Father’s Day! We celebrate and appreciate all you do.

Ciao!

As we dive headfirst into summer, gear up for beach getaways, family vacations, or just some well-deserved R&R, don't forget to check out this month's Calendar of Events. It's chock-full of activities guaranteed to spice up your month and give you plenty of excuses to postpone that cleaning you've been avoiding.

But hey, June isn't just about soaking up the sun—it's our chance to honor the unsung heroes of dad jokes everywhere on June 15th! Let's show some love to all the dads who've perfected the art of grilling and somehow managed to make "dad dancing" a thing.

And speaking of laughs, meet Vivien Monnie, our cover star this month and a bona fide stand-up comedian right here in Brunswick Forest. Her story is a delightful peek into the vibrant lives that make our community shine. I had a blast chatting with her, and I'm sure you'll find her journey as captivating as I did.

On June 19th, we commemorate Juneteenth, a pivotal day marking the liberation of enslaved Black Americans. It's a time to reflect on our history, celebrate the resilience of the Black community, and look forward to a future of continued progress and unity.

Know someone with a fascinating story? Nominate them to be featured in upcoming issues! Drop me an email—I'm eager to uncover more tales that make Brunswick Forest Living Magazine truly special and keep our community connected through shared experiences and inspiring narratives.

As always, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay grateful.

FORWARD MOVING YOU

NATURAL BEAUTY, ARTFULLY DONE

DISCOVER Artistic Ayes

Located right here in Brunswick Forest, Kelli Delperdang's Artistic Ayes Cosmetic Tattooing Studio for Brows & Lips is more than just a place for semi-permanent makeup—it's a sanctuary where artistry meets compassion. Specializing in microblading and lip blush procedures, Kelli's studio offers clients a chance to enhance their natural beauty with meticulous detail and a personal touch.

MICROBLADING

& LIP BLUSH: ENHANCING NATURAL BEAUTY

Artistic Ayes is renowned for its expertise in microblading, a technique that uses a blade-shaped instrument with fine needles to create delicate, hair-like strokes of pigment. Unlike traditional tattooing, microblading achieves a natural look ideal for those with sparse or thinning eyebrows. Kelli's meticulous approach ensures each client receives a custom-designed brow shape that complements their facial features.

In addition to microblading, Artistic Ayes offers lip blush services—a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that adds natural color and shape to the lips, enhancing their appearance with a subtle, sun-kissed tint.

A JOURNEY

ROOTED IN ART AND PASSION

Kelli's journey into cosmetic tattooing began with a deep-rooted passion for art and a desire to make a meaningful impact on her

clients' lives. After a career in art education and mural painting, she discovered microblading and recognized its transformative potential. Inspired by her daughter's interest and dissatisfied with early experiences, Kelli embarked on a journey to master the art of brow design. By 2018, she was certified and had established Artistic Ayes in her home studio, quickly gaining a reputation for excellence in Asheville and beyond.

PHILOSOPHY: BEAUTY WITH INTEGRITY

At the core of Artistic Ayes is Kelli's philosophy of "less pigment is more." This approach emphasizes natural-looking results and allows for gradual adjustments to achieve the perfect brow shape and color. Kelli collaborates closely with each client, ensuring their input shapes the final outcome—a process that reflects her commitment to enhancing their natural beauty responsibly and effectively.

"I truly care about the impact my work has on each client," Kelli explains. "It's not just about creating beautiful brows or lips; it's about making a positive difference in how they feel about themselves."

COMMUNITY AND CONNECTION

Beyond her studio, Kelli is deeply involved in the Brunswick Forest community, where she and her family have found a welcoming home. Reflecting on their move and the courage it took to start anew, Kelli finds common ground with her clients who have embarked on similar journeys of change and discovery.

"I love the courage and spirit of our community," Kelli shares. "It's inspiring to see so many embrace new beginnings and find beauty in the unexpected."

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL AND PERSONAL TOUCH

One of Kelli's clients sums up their experience: "Kelli is incredible! She is so talented and her microblading skills are amazing. I lost my eyebrows from chemo and they never fully came back, I’m so pleased with the outcome of my new eyebrows. On a personal level, she is the sweetest person. I highly recommend her."

LIFE AND LAUGHTER BEYOND THE STUDIO

Outside of work, Kelli cherishes time with her family, including her five children and furry companion, Dundee. From boating on the intercoastal waterways to lively card games with friends, she embraces the vibrant, coastal lifestyle of Leland, NC.

LOOKING AHEAD

As Artistic Ayes continues to thrive, Kelli remains dedicated to providing exceptional service and enhancing the natural beauty of her clients. Whether you're curious about microblading or lip blush, Kelli welcomes you to reach out for a consultation or simply a chat about how she can help you feel your best.

For more information or to book your appointment, visit Artistic Ayes or contact Kelli directly at 828-550-1742.

BioSymmetry Wilmington A

Science-Backed Approach to Health & Wellness

BioSymmetry is on a mission to educate, empower, and equip patients to Live Life Optimized. For many, weight loss can feel like an uphill battle—frustrating, discouraging, and at times, impossible. Questions like Why can’t I lose weight? or Will I always struggle with this? are common. The reality is that obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States, now recognized by the medical community as a complex disease rather than simply a matter of willpower.

Unlike fad diets or quick fixes, BioSymmetry takes a science-backed, individualized approach to weight loss. Their medically supervised programs address multiple factors, including nutrition, exercise, lifestyle habits, and underlying health conditions that may be preventing success. Each patient receives personalized care, helping them make

lasting changes rather than chasing temporary results.

In addition to weight management, BioSymmetry emphasizes the importance of thyroid health. Many people struggle with unexplained fatigue, sluggish metabolism, and stubborn weight gain— often unaware that an underactive thyroid could be the culprit. Left untreated, thyroid dysfunction can lead to serious health complications. Through early detection and ongoing monitoring, BioSymmetry helps patients optimize their thyroid function, restoring energy and overall well-being.

At the heart of BioSymmetry’s patientcentered approach is Dr. Allen Holmes, a board-certified emergency medicine physician with over 20 years of experience. reacting to illness. This shift in perspective fuels his dedication to helping patients take proactive control of their well-being.

The team at BioSymmetry is made up of experienced professionals dedicated to patient success. Deb Read, co-owner, bioidentical hormone specialist, and weight loss coach, plays a vital role in patient care. She trained under Dr. Chris Pate in 2014 before helping open the Wilmington office, where she has served as office manager and lead nurse for eight years. She meets with each patient before their consultation, ensuring they receive the right support and guidance. Outside of work, Deb enjoys an active lifestyle, including paddle boarding, surfing, snowboarding, and whitewater kayaking. Having spent 18 years in South America, she is also bilingual.

Alongside Deb, BioSymmetry’s team includes nurse practitioners Catie Blair,

GET TO KNOW SIHR THEATER

Winner of several prestigious awards for creating “magic” on stage

Sihr literally means “Magic” in the Arabic Language.

Sihr Theatre – a relatively new kid on the block is already making waves in Wilmington having been nominated for no less than 9 Wilmington Theater Awards. You can watch their shows around town in various local theaters including the Leland Arts Center. Their next show is quickly coming up - Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery, August 21-30 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center.

Tony-Elias Choufani, the artistic director of Sihr aims to show you that there is nothing more magical than life itself. His mission is to select stories that are a little edgy and imaginative in their narration but very real and contemporary in their message.

Tony, a Lebanese American, is a graduate of the American Conservatory Theater at UNCW and is a writer, director, actor and magician himself. He believes that live theater has the power to challenge the status quo and stimulate conversations that are often the starting point of change. Prior to founding the Sihr Theater, Tony has played the lead role in legendary plays such as “Ashes to Ashes” by Harold Pinter and “Out NC”.

Sihr presented its first play in 2024- ‘Shining City” by Conor

A dramatic moment from the play "Hir" by Taylor Mac. Sihr won the outstanding play award for this play.

McPherson and this play received several Wilmington Theater Awards Nominations including those for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Actor.

Sihr is not tied to any specific venue and performs at several local theater venues including the Leland Cultural Arts Center. Their next show is “Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery” in August and will be very relevant to the current political and social climate in the US.

Today, live theater competes for your attention and time against the plethora of choices offered in the comfort of your home by Netflix and Amazon Prime and other channels. Watching TV from your couch is fun but it is a “passive” and “sedentary “activity. Live Theater offers a more actively engaging and enriching experience that is also more social. Sihr takes this philosophy to a new level through sensorial presentations that activates your brain and body during the performance and stimulates rich debates (or arguments) after the show. Either way, Sihr believes in must-see, intimate theatrical performances that hook your attention and never let go!

Find out more about Sihr at http://www.sihrtheatre.com/ or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/sihrtheatre/

How One Woman Turned Life Into a Comedy Act

meet Vivien Monnie, a dynamic woman whose love for laughter, good food, and adventure defines her vibrant life in Shelmore with her husband Terry, a seasoned real estate attorney. "Every day with Terry is a best memory," Vivien quips, highlighting their shared joy in laughter.

Educated at Purdue University with a double major in journalism and biology, Vivien spent thirty fulfilling years selling residential real estate, a career she loved dearly. Now, retired and loving every moment, Vivien and Terry indulge in their passions: eating, cooking, and traveling the world in search of culinary delights. "Entertaining is high on our list," Vivien adds with a smile.

Their family extends from Brooklyn to L.A., with two children thriving in their respective cities, unaffected by the West Coast fires. At home in Shelmore, they're happily at the beck and call of Sheila, their feline queen who roams freely, keeping them on their toes.

Shelmore, their haven for the past seven years, captured their hearts after several visits timed around holidays like the 4th of July and Thanksgiving. "We found it bustling with families, not rowdy college parties on the beaches," Vivien recalls, noting the neighborhood's appeal to like-minded individuals: educated, travel enthusiasts who cherish community and good company. "It feels like being back in school, where everyone's on a level playing field," she muses.

Reflecting on their diverse neighborhood activities—be it golf, Mah Jong, or exploring local eateries—Vivien chuckles, "It's probably similar in any community—there's always something for everyone."

Their personal journey spans continents, with roots in China and Vivien's birth in Indiana during her father's studies. "I used

to joke with my family that they better be nice to me since I'm the only one eligible to run for President,". Vivien and Terry enjoy reminiscing about their global travels, from Botswana safaris to culinary escapades in Morocco. "This year, Croatia and Northern Italy beckon—though I swore we'd rest in 2026, Thailand awaits in the spring!"

Retirement often marks the start of a slower-paced lifestyle, but for Vivien, it’s been anything but. After years of working as a realtor, she’s traded office hours for open mic nights and punchlines. In her post-retirement chapter, she’s discovered a knack for stand-up comedy, crafting sets inspired by the hilarity—and occasional absurdity—of navigating life as a retiree. Her sharp wit and relatable humor have quickly made her a local favorite. I caught up with Vivien to hear more about her journey into comedy, the inspiration behind her routines, and what it’s like to find a brand-new calling after retiring.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TRY STAND-UP COMEDY AFTER RETIRING?

I was taking a few theater classes at the Leland Cultural Arts Center where live plays were produced at the end of each session. I found that I really enjoyed being involved with that experience. My fellow thespian, Dan Bruneau and good friend Eric Mens, brought up and encouraged me to try standup comedy. Dan was kind enough to take a comedy class with me at the Dead Crow Comedy Club in downtown Wilmington which took place in the evenings.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR COMEDIC VOICE AND STYLE?

In "real life" it seems I always have a story to tell. It's no fun just telling the facts. Even as a child my Grandmother used to say I could tell her an hour tale from going to the store for five minutes! That reflects my comedic style, to embellish a real life story peppered with humor.

© Best Version Media

COULD YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FROM ONE OF YOUR EARLY PERFORMANCES?

After taking the comedy class, our "graduation" was to perform in front of a live audience with our own material. Friends and family were invited. In the middle of my set, a man walked right in front of me from seemingly nowhere and exited out the back door. I lowered the mic and just stared at him. The audience loved it and I got a big laugh. That's when it occurred to me to just be myself and react accordingly.

HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH IDEAS FOR YOUR COMEDY ROUTINES?

Many times I'm awake at the "witching hour" around 3:00 a.m. I understand this happens to a lot of women. My mind goes over the past, may it be just a few days ago or perhaps a few years ago. It's then I realize how absurd or ridiculous something is and I start putting a funny spin on it. By the time I wake up my set has it's bones.

What challenges have you faced, especially starting later in life?

Challenges- many people have asked me where I am performing, they would like to see me again. Most places that have comics are late night establishments and I'm at an age where hanging out till midnight is pretty much in the past. I have found the Gio Fund in Leland does have comedy at an earlier time but they have not called me to perform (hint, please ask for me!). I have recently received a call from another source but that's for a private event.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE AUDIENCE'S REACTIONS TO YOUR COMEDY, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU JOKE ABOUT OLDER ADULTS' SHENANIGANS?

My comedy is geared around an audience that is from my era but is something everyone can relate to. Most people have a sibling, a parent or someone they know that fits my routine. But I do understand I have to write for my audience. Luckily in the surrounding area, there are plenty of folks in my age group! I did what I thought was a pretty good set regarding gardening to a young group, not a great reaction…

HOW HAS PERFORMING COMEDY

As with most retired people, my schedule is packed. How did we get anything done when we worked? My husband, Terry, is very understanding when I'm working on comic routines. When I know I have a performance and there is a deadline, I do spend some time every day working on it.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO MIGHT WANT TO TRY STAND-UP COMEDY LATER IN LIFE?

My advice to anyone, regardless of age, thinking of doing stand up is preparation. Many many hours go into the creating of any story be it comedy, fiction, non-fiction, etc. Editing is crucial. My finished set is after hours and many revisions of the original idea. Since the writing part of comedy is really the essence of stand-up, I decided to submit an essay piece in a writing competition. What a surprise I won first place and a blue ribbon to boot ! When you’ve polished your piece, then practice, practice aloud, time yourself, yes with a stopwatch. Most places give you three minutes for a set. Written words have a vastly different effect when spoken. Some words are just funnier when spoken. With enough "talking to yourself" the timing will become natural. Please don't think you can just get up in front of an audience and wing it.

© Best Version Media

COULD YOU SHARE A FUNNY ANECDOTE OR JOKE FROM ONE OF YOUR ROUTINES THAT RESONATES WITH YOUR AUDIENCE?

ARE THERE ANY COMEDIANS, PAST OR PRESENT, WHO HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR COMEDIC STYLE?

Funny comics- My favorites are comics that tell stories. Ron White is amazing. He is so seasoned every move can generate laughter. Kathleen Madigan, low key and so funny. Sebastian Maniscalco is a very physical comic who takes the entire stage. He's a riot! And, of course, the late Johnny Carson whose timing was impeccable.

I was not sure of this one but it got a big laugh: "Aging in place. What twenty-four year old marketing genius thought this would appeal to seniors? Aging in place... what am I a sequoia?"

Looking ahead, Terry shares a heartfelt message for their neighbors: "Remember those early days—finding your way around, the quest for Costco, and the joy of discovering new friendships. A welcoming hand and shared laughter make all the difference!”

Being "Sunshine" & Using Your Imagination

to Help Your Loved One

We all have days when we are not able to smile no matter how much we want to. However, on the days when you’re in a neutral mode, think about your voice tone and your facial expressions when you are seeing your Loved One, and everyone else. I promise, if you can muster the strength to be even a little bit perky, your Loved One and everyone else will likely respond in kind. This in turn may turn a mediocre day into a pretty good one, with more smiles all around.

Think about embodying sunshine in whatever way that looks for you. Then, when your Loved One, kids, or spouse are having a rough day, your version of sunshine will inevitably make things better! Worst case scenario – on those days when you just cannot present yourself as Sunshine, I want you to just present yourself as Love. Yes! Love can be tired,

exhausted, and overwhelmed. If you act lovingly through all those emotions, it will be felt and appreciated even if they don’t say anything.

There are going to be days when your Loved One is just having a horrible day. You may be able to make them feel better on the phone by sharing something silly, or making humorous comments when you describe your day. How you approach their bad days will make a BIG difference in how they can cope and rally. If nothing else, share a favorite memory with them where everyone laughed and laughed. You can start by saying, “Hey Ma, I was thinking today about that time when...” and presto –everyone is in a better mood.

Now for the creative part! There may be times with your Loved One when there is something they must do for a medical test, or some other reason, and the staff or

Caregivers are just getting nowhere with them. These difficult circumstances can turn into favorite memories.

Here is an example of how I got creative during my tenure as a Caregiver with my Aunt Esther.

We knew she was in trouble medically with her abdomen and we were at the hospital for her CT scan. When you have a CT scan with contrast for your abdomen, you have to drink this thick, chalky-tasting barium. They may have a few different flavor choices, but the bottom line is you feel like you are drinking chalk, and a LOT of it!!

Esther had this wonderful look – raising her eyebrows and giving you the “Seriously??” or “Who the heck do you think you are fooling?” It was enough, along with her dry wit, to send anyone into stitches of laughter. We spent over an hour trying to get the barium down. We would joke about

what it actually tasted like versus the banana flavor they claimed, and giggles ensued.

In typical Esther fashion, she soon made friends and issued warnings to others in the waiting room who were attempting to do the same herculean feat. I just kept joking with her and asking “Does it taste more like banana cream pie? or more like a banana split?” “What do you like best with your banana split?” “Where did you have the best banana split of your life?” Then I would divert the conversation to the store, the restaurant, or the city where she had the banana split. All the while, I was handing her back the barium shake for her to take another sip. Our silliness was infectious and lightened other people’s time, and we had fun with whoever was there waiting. When the barium was gone, she had done what was needed and actually had a good time in the process. This is what I want to help you give your Loved Ones, too!!

If I had not been in a place of sunshine or love, I might have scolded Esther told her all sorts of factual but mean adult-type things. She would have felt bad, like she had let me down. Just because she felt awful and was having a hard time coping with the very awful tasting tasks at hand. So, when you encounter a situation like this with your Loved Ones, I want you to stop and say nothing. THINK before a word comes out of your mouth that will be critical and instead think of how you can turn things around into a memory of a not-so-fun afternoon that turns into laughter, togetherness, and much kindness and love. And get creative!!!

Classic Southern Banana Pudding

Banana pudding is a beloved Southern dessert that brings comfort and nostalgia in every spoonful. With its layers of creamy vanilla pudding, sliced bananas, and Nilla wafers, it's a dish that’s been cherished at potlucks, picnics, and Sunday dinners for generations. What makes it an ideal summer treat is how refreshingly cool and light it is—no need to heat up the oven, and it’s even better after a night in the fridge. Sweet, simple, and irresistibly smooth, banana pudding is Southern hospitality in dessert form.

INGREDIENTS

1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk

1 1/2 cups ice cold water

1 (3.4 oz.) box vanilla instant pudding mix

INSTRUCTIONS

In a large bowl, beat together the sweetened condensed milk and water until well combined - about 1 minute. Add the pudding mix and beat wellabout 2 minutes.

YIELD: 15 SERVINGS | PREP TIME 15 minutes

CHILLING 7 hours | TOTAL TIME 7 hours 15 minutes

Cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight. It is very important to allow the proper amount of time for the pudding mixture to set. It will be watery if you don't let it set up long enough.

In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the pudding mixture until no streaks of pudding remain.

Dessert can either be made in individual portions or in a large glass bowl with 4-5 quart capacity (a 9x13 baking dish also works).

To assemble dessert, arrange 1/3 of the Nilla wafers covering the bottom, overlapping if necessary. Next, layer 1/3 of the bananas, and 1/3 of the pudding mixture. Repeat twice more, garnishing with additional wafers or wafer crumbs on the top layer.

Cover tightly and allow to chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours - or up to 8 hours, no longer (because bananas will start to brown - see Notes for tips on preventing browning).

3 cups heavy cream

• 4 cups sliced barely ripe bananas, (see note)

• 1 (12 oz.) box Nilla Wafers

NOTES

The reason the recipe says to serve within 8 hours is that the bananas will turn brown as they oxidize. There are a couple of things you can do to make not brown as fast:

1. Pick bananas that are barely ripe. If they are slightly green and the stem, those are perfect. These will tend to brown as fast.

2. Brush them with some lemon juice. Any fruit juice helps (pineapple, apple, orange). This can change the flavor slightly so brushing them is better than soaking them. Even water neutralizes the ph and will slow down the browning if you rinse them in water.

3. Rinse them with club soda. The advantage here is that it won't affect the taste. Don't use tonic as it has a bad taste.

4. Try to keep them airtight. The less contact with the air the less they will brown.

Meet KONO & ANGELO

Hi, my name is Angelo. I'm a nice Italian boy and the doggie in the back is my brother Kono. You met him some months ago in this magazine and he mentioned that he might be getting a brother, so here I am! He is a little shy with people but not me. I love to be petted and if you go by my house I might follow you home. I am so lucky that I got adopted. I love my new home and my new family. We live near Hammock Lake and my mom takes me around the lake every day. I have met so many dogs and their owners. Maybe I'll see you around the neighborhood. Life could not be better! SUBMITTED BY

GET INTO THE GAME Tips for New Golfers -

PART 1

Have you ever wanted to try golf but not sure how to get started? Have you dabbled in the game in the past and now really want to move forward from renewed interest, recent retirement or just because? Help is on the way! Starting a netw activity is full of excitement, nervousness, anticipation, a desire to fit in with those already involved, along with a variety of other emotions and expectations. Here is advice I provide to those looking to try Golf or advance their budding interests in Part 1 of my three-part series on getting into the game.

CLUBS AND EQUIPMENT

Getting some decent clubs is important. A golfer can have up to 14 clubs maximum but I recommend less to help with the pace of play and decision making. Many starter sets these days may have 7 - 10 clubs within the set or golfers can find a good deal on a full set and take some out of play for now and add back in later when those yardages needed, after learning the basics.

Some new golfers inherit clubs from a spouse or friend that are too heavy/light or long/short and this can be extremely detrimental in one’s success and possible long-term future in the game. It’s like saying “Wear these shoes a few sizes too big until you grow into them or learn to make them work for you” but that extra weight and length makes it cumbersome, creates flatter heaving swings and awkward swing fundamentals to move the ill-fit clubs. No fun = No future golfer. Clubs should be based on one’s height (not gender or age, like junior or senior). Advanced golfers also get fitted for additional aspects like lie angle, shaft flexes, grip sizes, club head weight, club head type and much more.

As a newbie to the game, a smaller but good starter set is fine as long as it matches your

height and speed capabilities (light flex great for most women but some can produce high speeds from their sports backgrounds and those shafts might be too whippy and create havoc in the ball flight). Just because a set of clubs say ‘Ladies’ or ‘Senior’ doesn’t mean it will fit, it’s a poor label. A woman can be 4’10” or 5’11”. Most ‘ladies’ clubs will be a good fit for someone 5’3”-5’5”… but what happens to those who are shorter or taller? Or a man can be 5’6” or 6’3” while most sets for men are geared towards @5’10”. Or one 79-year old man may generate faster speed than another 79-year old man. How can people of different heights and arm lengths be expected to play the same generic equipment (or even from the same set of stereotyped teeing grounds –that’s a whole other topic ;)? It would be like telling a person to go into the generic shoe department and just pick out a pair of men’s or women’s shoes… first question is, What size?

For women, I love recommending Ultralights for Women that come (right-handed only) in two sizes (5’0”-5’3” or 5’3”-5’6”) with other options within their company for even shorter than 5’0”’. They’re produced by US Kids Golf who figured out a lot of moms, grandmothers, aunts and women are getting into the game and most club choices are ill-suited, so they developed a line of clubs for women that are great with a kick-stand bag, headcovers and 10 clubs… perfect! A lot of my newbie students have these… (For those reading this far, I can also provide a 10% off code for online orders, so contact me!)

I also like Tour Edge Lady Edge sets (the turquoise clubs also can be ordered at 1” longer than their standard length, good for women @ 5’6”-5’9), also in standard lefthanded sets and also with a kick stand bag). Their ‘petit’ set isn’t as short as I’d like but I love their standard clubs, so any women shorter than 5’3” I’d put in the Ultralights for Women 60” set.

© Best Version Media

One can also pursue a PING or other company custom fitting if taller or stronger than the standard club built for women. I’ve played PING since age 14 when my coach sold me a used set at a very low cost and love them… it’s a higher financial investment but some of the best clubs within the fitting world. They can make just the ones you’d like and you can fill in others later. Other companies sell sets and fittings you can also explore, as not everyone has the same preferences and can try Cobra, Tour Edge, Callaway, Taylor Made… I’ve just enjoyed getting students into the Ultralights and the Lady Edge sets. For men, most companies have box sets that can serve as a good starter set. Type in Starter Sets for men and you’ll see names like Wilson, Tour Edge, Callaway, Cobra, Precise, RAM pop up… again, PING and other fitted clubs are an option to get just the ones you’d like. You can visit local courses, your Club if a member or a fitting store (like Loggerhead in Wilmington) to see what options they have for someone starting out in the game.

At minimum, I’d recommend at least a putter, pitching wedge (a 10 iron, if it had a number on it), 7 or 8 iron, a hybrid (like a 5 or around 26 degree loft) and a driving club (could be a driver around 12-14 degrees of loft or a 5 wood/5 metal at around 20 degrees of loft).

DON’T FORGET…

• Towel (mud, golf course application sprays, dew, dirty golf ball to clean after marking on the putting green before putting)

• Tees (the Martini tees are easy to tee up)

• Ball marker (I love the magnetic ones I can clip onto my hat visor for easy access)

• • Hair scrunchie / band for long hair

• • Permanent marker (to identify your golf ball with your personal marking on both sides of the ball)

• Hydration and energy snack

• First aid kit and other medical needs

• Umbrella

• Bug spray (I use sun sleeves that double as bug protection) and sunscreen / sun protection

• Golf balls (for newbies, find good deals on ones that give you distance or a mix of distance and accuracy… check at the golf shop based on which brands they carry or go online to a company’s ball fitting chart like Titleist. My Dad worked in New Bedford next to the Acushnet ball-making factories for Titleist and I grew up a Titleist kid and visited the factory once, great tour!)

• • Green repair tool (looks like a little two-prong fork although I just use my tee now, less stuff in my pocket poking holes and escaping into the wash machine!)
