This month, I’m especially excited about our feature story. My good friend and neighbor, Kenny Green—a die-hard Cardinals fan—shares a heartwarming tale about how his dad, a Queens, NY native, became a devoted Cardinals fan and passed that passion down to his family, despite growing up in Yankees territory. Be sure to “Catch” this must-read story on page 10!

April is also National Volunteer Month, a perfect time to give back. Doreen has rounded up some incredible local charities that could use a helping hand. If you’re looking for ways to share your talents and make a di erence, check out her article, “Making a Di erence.”

COVER FEATURE

Ken saw Lou Brock inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1985

Bats, Baseball, and BRUNSWICK FOREST

In the world of sports fandom, some people casually root for a team, tuning in when it’s convenient. And then there are people like Ken Green—lifelong, diehard, statistic-memorizing, memorabiliacollecting, game-attending superfans. For Ken, his devotion to the St. Louis Cardinals isn’t just a hobby—it’s part of his DNA, passed down like a treasured family heirloom.

Ken’s love for the Cardinals can be traced back to his father, Bob Green, who grew up in Queens, New York— enemy territory for any non-Yankees fan. In 1942, an 11-year-old Bob, already a budding baseball fanatic, found himself swept up in the excitement of that year’s World Series. The Yankees, expectedly, had made it to the Fall Classic, and their opponent was the St. Louis Cardinals. Wanting to make things a little more interesting, Bob made a bet with his Uncle Dave—one whole dollar, a hefty

sum for a kid in 1942. Bob put his faith in the Cardinals, who were led by a young rising star named Stan Musial. When the Cardinals won the series in five games, Bob collected his winnings and, more importantly, found a team to root for the rest of his life. "That was it," Ken says. "That one dollar locked in his loyalty forever, and he made sure his kids inherited that same passion."

Ken and his two siblings—older brother Scott and younger sister Beth—were raised as devoted Cardinals fans despite growing up in New York, where Yankees and Mets fans dominated the landscape. “People thought it was weird that we weren’t Yankees fans, but to us, it made perfect sense,” Ken laughs. “It was family tradition.”

Ken’s love for sports didn’t stop at being a fan—he built an entire career around it. From an early age, he knew he wanted to be a sportswriter, and he made that dream a reality. Over the course of 32 years, Ken worked as a sportswriter,

columnist, and copy editor for three major newspapers: the San Antonio Light, New York Daily News, and Newark Star-Ledger.

Writing about sports gave Ken a frontrow seat to the action. He covered thrilling games, profiled legendary athletes, and analyzed the highs and lows of teams across various leagues. But no matter where his work took him, his heart remained with the Cardinals.

Ken has been married to his wife for 43 years who has been an incredibly patient and supportive partner in his Cardinals obsession. In fact, she spent 20 years working from home as a travel professional—inside what Ken lovingly refers to as “the baseball office.”

“This wasn’t just a little corner with a couple of baseball things,” Ken admits. “It was a full-fledged shrine to the Cardinals. Jerseys, posters, signed baseballs—you name it.”

when he was just a kid, thanks to his father’s encouragement. In 1967, Bob suggested that Ken and Scott start a scrapbook chronicling the Cardinals’ season. That year, the team—led by Lou Brock and Bob Gibson—won the World Series. For Ken, it was the perfect introduction to both collecting and storytelling.

“I was hooked,” he recalls. “I kept making scrapbooks for five full seasons, clipping every box score, headline, and article I could find. It was like running my own personal sports section.”

Over the years, his collection evolved from newspaper clippings to an impressive array of Cardinals memorabilia, including autographed baseballs, photos, and even a bat signed by 42 legendary players. "That bat is my crown jewel," Ken says proudly. "It’s got signatures from five Hall of Famers, including Willie Mays, six MVPs, three Cy Young winners, and more than two dozen All-Stars."

One thing that sets his collection apart is that the vast majority of his autographs were obtained in person. "I don’t buy autographs," he explains. "That’s why so many of them say ‘To Kenny.’ It kills their resale value, but that’s fine by me. These are memories, not investments."

Ken has attended countless games over the years, from regularseason matchups to historic postseason moments. He’s been to two World Series and three National League Championship

Series—always, of course, when the Cardinals were involved. He has also attended four All-Star Games, soaking in the excitement of baseball’s greatest players on one stage.

“People don’t realize just how storied the Cardinals franchise is,” he says. “Only the Yankees have won more World Series titles. And let’s be honest—no one outside of New York actually likes the Yankees.”

While baseball remains his greatest passion, Ken has always had other interests. Music is a close second, and he and his wife have attended over 300 concerts together. Their shared love of rock ‘n’ roll has taken them to venues all over the country, creating a treasure trove of memories along the way.

Locally, Ken has also been involved in volunteer work, particularly with Brunswick County Meals on Wheels. Delivering meals to those in need has been a fulfilling experience, and he plans to return to the program in the near future.

Though age and a couple of back surgeries have slowed him down a bit, Ken remains active. He enjoys biking around Brunswick Forest and walking on the treadmill—always with rock n' roll playing in his ears, especially his beloved Jethro Tull. Since moving to Southeast North Carolina in 2019, Ken and his wife have fallen in love with the area. “The beaches, the weather, the people—it’s all been great,” he says. “And Wilmington’s downtown is a hidden gem.”

Through every stage of his life—whether as a young boy filling scrapbooks, a journalist covering major league sports, or a retiree reminiscing about the many games he’s attended— Ken’s passion for the St. Louis Cardinals has remained unwavering.

Baseball isn’t just a pastime for Ken Green. It’s a lifelong love affair, a family bond, and a personal history woven into every play, every game, and every piece of memorabilia in his collection.

And one thing is certain: no matter where he lives, no matter how many years pass, Ken Green will always be a Cardinals fan.

SOCIAL MEDIA & YOU AS A CAREGIVER

Pretty much everyone is on social media in one form or another these days. The key is to figure out how to use it to bring you joy and wisdom. Like most people – myself included – our breaks and downtime don’t feel complete unless we have been scrolling through our social media. Social media and the algorithms surrounding it have a huge ability to change your mindset and your mood depending on how you are feeling on a given day. Many people use it to show off new toys or fabulous vacations or haircuts, or even to push their political or religious views!

This can be overwhelming at times because of all the negativity that comes with it. So, what to do? You, as a Caregiver, are already stretched beyond your limits, with everyone needing things from you and depending on you. We need to build you up and fill your energy tank with more positivity than negativity to give you strength and energy so that you can continue to give out as much love and compassion as you are.

So, the formula for happiness on social media is as follows:

• Unfollow any accounts that are negative, make you sad, make you uncomfortable, or give you any kind of icky feelings inside.

• Do not unfriend but unfollow any friends who are posting lots of political or other things that make you uncomfortable or take up your time, and do not bring you joy, or

make you laugh on a consistent basis.

• Your brain, heart, and soul can only handle so much suffering at a time. And since you can’t change being a Caregiver, you need to protect yourself.

Now, once you have done the weeding out so that you can scroll for 10 minutes and find nothing that doesn’t make you smile, then it is time to start adding!!

INSTAGRAM

The best part about Instagram is that it allows you to collect the posts that you love in folders that you name! In case you are new to Instagram or haven’t done this before, under each image, on the far right side, is the outline of a bookmark. Tap the outline of the bookmark and it will allow you to “Save to Collection,” and you name that Collection whatever you wish! I personally have over 15! I highly recommend creating a collection of things which I call “silly fun.”

Once you have gathered some different posts, you can go to your own profile page, and in the top right-hand corner, there is a drop-down menu that starts with “settings”. The fifth item down is the bookmark symbol, and it is called “Saved”. If you click on this, it will bring you to all the different collections you have gathered, and you can choose whichever one suits you to make you smile when you need it! I especially love Instagram and I follow all sorts of inspirational and spiritual sites, cool innovations like mechanical and technology.

I follow travel sites, nature sites, and LOTS of animal sites because watching a 30-second clip with a funny dog often gets me to laugh out loud and brings me joy. Think of museums, national parks, and tourist sites for places you have always wanted to see. Follow humorous sites, follow sites that have spiritual affirmations, ocean life, and surfing. I also love following mystical and educational sites too. And you can follow sports teams as well!! Follow whatever brings you joy on social media and at least for now – ditch the rest!!

PINTEREST

My Aunt Esther would have LOVED Pinterest! She would take the time and effort to cut out pictures, articles, comics, etc., and sent them to me and my Mom in her letters. Pinterest is the modern-day ability to do that instantly through technology. Create an account and then think of subjects that make you smile and happy things that you are passionate about! After searching for things that you love in those subject areas, you just need to “Pin” them to the “board” of the subjects you created boards for earlier. You can always create new boards as you start to see things in your feed that you want to pin that are a new subject area. One can spend hours on Pinterest learning and having fun finding things.

Especially in today’s world, it is especially important to build in activities that bring you joy and laughter. So use social media to help you curate streams of the things that make you smile and at least for now - ditch the rest!!

Our Street, Creativity & Retirement WHO KNEW? - PART 2

PHOTOS & ARTICLE SUBMITTED BY

STONEY POINT DRIVE IN THE SHELMORE NEIGHBORHOOD, BRUNSWICK FOREST

Last month, Maddy shared the story of how she and Larry moved to Brunswick Forest and were warmly welcomed by their wonderful neighbors on Stoney Point Drive. Maddy began by highlighting the incredible creative talents that are thriving right on her street. From artists and writers to craftsmen and chefs, Maddy has been inspired to learn about the unique passions that have shaped her neighbors’ lives.

This month, we continue that journey, introducing even more neighbors who bring creativity and artistry into our community. Their stories, like those we've already shared, remind us of the incredible depth of talent and experience that makes Stoney Point Drive, as well as Brunswick Forest a special place to call home.

TRACI CIMINI

Traci is a powerhouse specializing in personalized cards, favors, candy bar wrappers and invitations for all occasions through her beloved business “Your Cards and More” which you can find on Facebook. She specializes in crafting unique cards, favors, candy bar wrappers, and invitations for every occasion. Her absolute favorite time of year is the holiday season when she creates enchanting, personalized Christmas cards from Santa for children, spreading magic and joy, and bringing smiles to the grandparents on our street who send them to their beloved grandchildren. Traci’s background is publicity and marketing, and she was blessed to do just that for the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland. The museum is a hidden gem on the western shore in Maryland.

JAMES FORNEY

Jim makes the most beautiful natural wood floating frames. He also creates remarkable furniture including wine cabinets, wine cases, and fun feet for the card game “Hand in Foot”. He makes Euchre and Pinochle dice so the neighborhood cardplayers can remember which suit is trump, assuming they can remember to look at the dice. Many of his unique wood frames hang in the homes of Stoney Point. We like to think of that part of his creations as “Frames by James”. Jim started at an early age learning at his father’s side how to craft furniture. He has been creating wood furniture for his family and friends for over 30 years. KIM GRISHAM

Kim was raised on a farm in Michigan and moved here from Chicago, after retiring from an intense job as the Director of Strategic Planning and Analysis for AT&T for 24 years. In retirement she has found a love of building and sculpting clay and putting a face onto everything and anything. Her work is very whimsical and only limited by her imagination.” Her art can be found at the Port City Pottery and Fine Crafts at the Cotton Exchange in Wilmington. One of Kim’s pieces were recently purchased for the set of “Merv” a movie that was being filmed in Wilmington last year.

DIANE GUIDIDAS.

Diane hails from NJ. She is our in-house interior designer and our go to for advice when we need her 20 years of designing for fortune 500 companies experience, to create warm cozy interiors in our southern coastal style homes. She has this uncanny ability to combine design/color. She puts her love of sewing and skills to use by making tee shirt quilts and sewing little dresses for charity.

MADDY HALBACH

Maddy, the street’s favorite Kiwi, is a retired Finance Educator and now a multimedia artist. She has won art competitions with her mixed media paintings and wearable art. Since 2017, her handpainted wedding dress, appropriately named "Lily Pond," has been featured on websites, in museums, galleries, and major shopping malls in and around Maryland. Maddy is now a studio artist at the Southport Studio Artists in Southport. She believes that art is a way of expressing oneself and that it can have a positive impact on people's lives. Many of her paintings will be exhibited during the month of May in the main gallery at Leland Cultural Art Center. In addition to the studio more of her art can be found on MaddyHalbachArt.com or hanging in many of the homes on Stoney Point Drive.

BILL LEDERHOUSE

Bill is a retired Navy Heat Exchanger Product Manager for ITT Standard in Buffalo, NY. He was introduced to woodworking as a child by his father, himself a master carpenter. At a young age he would build go- carts so he and his friends could ride them on the neighborhood streets. He can often be found helping neighbors with minor home repairs and woodworking projects, building wood card holders for neighbors so they can participate in our card games or bowls with unique designs for our kitchens. He has made rocking horses for his grandchildren and other fun items. When Bill is not helping others, he can be found walking his buddy “Darby”, who likes to visit and get dog treats from the neighbors.

Tee is our street’s greatest chef. She is a foody and wonderful cook. She retired from teaching middle school and as the Wellness Coordinator for Verona Area School District in Wisconsin. She has always had an interest in cooking and now during her retirement in Brunswick Forest has found her happy place, the kitchen. Tee loves to experiment with creating and cooking tasty dishes. She views food as a palate, colorful and beautiful on a plate filled with flavor. In honor of Hell’s Kitchen Finale Tee made Gordon Ramsey’s famous Lobster Mac and Cheese. For New Year's she made an amazing seafood stew and a lobster ravioli topped with lobster and crab in a light lemon sauce. She goes out and tries new restaurants in the Brunswick-Wilmington area, posts her experiences on social media and discuss these places with the neighbors. When Tee decides to host a dinner party, the neighbors do their best to ensure that they will be the ones invited to participate in her culinary delights. It’s been fun uncovering these hidden “gems” of Shelmore. I’m sure there are many more to be discovered as we keep broadening our friendships in what we lovingly call “The Point”.

Golf’s Consistency CHALLENGE NIC'S TIPS

NICOLE WELLER, LPGA/PGA GOLF TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

Whenever I inquire about a student’s goals, the top response is the desire for more consistency. It’s a super popular quest by all golfers. Who wouldn’t want to find the perfect way to move the ball the same way each time, it’s so much more fun, rewarding and easy!

The interesting thing, though, is that consistency is a myth. As human beings who function a little differently every day, a more realistic goal might be to have a smaller window of variability. Instead of the big misses, can the shots have a lot closer pattern, wavering maybe a little this way or that way but not as wide a dispersion?

Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott are world-renown owner coaches of Vision54 (Pia coached Annika Sorenstam and they both coach many great current Tour players, amateur competitors and recreational golfers all alike). They say be a “MASTER OF VARIABILITY – BE adaptable! Every day on the golf course will be variable. Consistency is a myth. You want to learn your own common tendencies what you do when playing great and how you get in your own way. Those tendencies can be consistent! By recognizing these tendencies you can start to manage yourself on the course, no matter what happens each day – and you will be a master of your own variability”.

While playing at Wake Forest University on scholarship for the women’s golf team, I had shot my lowest round of golf during a qualifier for a travel event, at one point. What a fluid, easy round – I couldn’t do anything wrong! I expected that the next day and tried to find what I had instead of being who I was that day and hitting the shots I had that day and scored a lot higher than expected. Having great routines and a perfect swing doesn’t mean it’ll come through as planned, it just increases our odds. Golf is a difficult game for a round, let alone four rounds in a row to win an event at a professional touring level or amateur Club Championship. Dr. Robert Bjork, distinguished cognitive psychology research professor at UCLA, has done a great amount research on learning and forgetting. Just because one can perform something doesn’t mean it’s been learned and conversely just because something’s been learned doesn’t mean that it can always be performed exactly the same. Two top players at The Masters recently both hit their 2nd shot way right of the 15th green on the final day, very off-line for players of their caliber. How could that happen after all the millions of golf balls they’ve hit with a coach right there? It’s the human factor and just because they’ve learned it doesn’t mean it can always be performed the way we intend, so we need to give ourselves some slack, acknowledge and honor the human factor and move forward to do it again.

SO HOW CAN ONE CREATE A TIGHTER RESULT PATTERN?

check in with what you have that day. A former colleague of mine who coached at a large SEC university men’s golf team and had played in two U.S. Opens said if his ball curved a little right that day, he played it. If it curved a little left another day, he played it. He didn’t try to fix it, he learned how to make his shots that day get to the hole. Patterns are a gift, learn to recognize them and capitalize on them.

Spend energy on what you can control and not what you can’t. Golfers spend too much time on trying to micromanage things that are out of one’s control (other people, weather, results, fairness, one’s swing mechanics). Do your best to plan and then not worry, play. Rehearse a swing feel or image away from the ball and then once you address the ball, it’s time to play, not think and micromanage. Watching The Master’s on tv recently, Ludvig Aberg from Sweden did all his planning (@95% of his shot) and then spent very little time over the ball and executed his shot (@5% of his shot). Let go of things you can’t control and focus on your planning, intent, attitude, how you power yourself during a round with food and hydration, how you warm-up

Be aware of both your technical skill and your human skills you bring to the table each day, they’ll vary and that’s OK. Just

effectively… remember it takes only 15 minutes to actually play the game of golf. All the time between those swings are how you can be successful or not, based on what you tend to be attentive to and how you react.

Learn to practice better with both blocked (repetitive) and random (scrimmaging) type practice so that what’s learned can then also be performed with variables. I love taking students out on the course or range for Transfer Play Practice. Hitting 10 seven-irons on the range is one thing. Super and congratulations! But can you do it after having had 5 minutes since your last swing on a totally different terrain with the perceived pressure of the match or your friends’ comments? It’s one thing to learn how to shoot a basketball over and over again. It’s another to shoot a basketball with someone charging at you with arms flailing and a crowd cheering for you to miss while you have to pivot, re-set and shoot… did you practice shooting that way? Train better! Check out a brilliant book a colleague of mine, Trent Wearner called Golf Scrimmages: Realistic Practice Games under Pressure to help learn how to hit shots.

Be OK knowing you can’t be consistent but striving towards a tighter window of variance. A golfer might only hit one shot straight on the range but the other nine were only fiveten yards off in each direction. That’s better than three very straight shots and the other seven shot being twenty yards or more off and ‘out of bounds’… it’s a more playable tendency. Above all, stay the course, enjoy exploring your game and either being successful on some days and rounds and then learning about what could be better on the other days.

Helping Single Mothers ACHIEVE SELF SUFFICIENCY!

PHOTOS & ARTICLE SUBMITTED BY

Words from the Founder: Carmen Schloner

Caridad has done an incredible job, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, donors, and the entire community who support its mission. Because of your generosity, in 2021, we were able to help 5 singlemother families. By 2024, that number grew to 46 families who became independent, broke the cycle of poverty, and now lead normal lives.

IS A TESTIMONY FROM ONE OF OUR MOM’S: Jennifer

"I am a single mother raising two children on my own, without their father. I was struggling and needed help and was not having luck finding resources. I did a google search and found Caridad through the Help Hub. I reached out and spoke to Ms. Carmen about a year ago. She reassured me that she understood my situation and was able to help me. She immediately took all my information and gave me the information and resources that I needed to move forward. She kept in touch with me by routinely checking in and offering solutions to things I was struggling with. Most importantly, she let me know that I was not alone and that I should keep in contact with her and let her know if I needed anything. I cannot express how grateful I am to have found such a ministry that helps single mothers". Caridad remains committed to motivating and empowering women to work hard, secure full-time jobs, and follow structured plans to navigate challenging times. They won’t be doing it alone— we’ll be here every step of the way until they achieve their goals.

We look forward to seeing you at our Spring Festival at Shuckin’ Shack in Leland on Saturday, April 26th. This will be our only fundraiser in 2025.
