Our feature story this month is close to my heart—Fermented Friends is all about good wine and great friendships. This fun-loving group has been enjoying each other’s company for over 10 years (and counting!). Enjoy their story on page 10.
Patricia Faulkner, who serves on the committee for the LPGA Amateur Golf Association, shares a wonderful story about how the group continues to grow—enriching the lives of women through golf and community here in the Cape Fear region.
Meet two of our talented resident experts: LRG Kitchen and Bath and BlueWave Dentistry—both live and work right here in Brunswick Forest.
With more than 25 years of experience in directing and acting, Archie Gidwani shares her passion for community theater. Her upcoming production of Crimes of the Heart is the perfect introduction to this creative and vibrant local scene.
And finally, Band of Brothers is looking for volunteers! Learn how you can lend a hand—literally—as a “handyman or handywoman” helping with home repairs for neighbors in need.
May 2025. This month, my baby—my one and only—is graduating from high school.
If you follow me on Facebook, you know how weepy I get when I talk about my daughter. I love being known as Izzi’s mom. And in just a few months, my little girl will be heading off to college to begin a brand-new chapter.
This is your chapter, baby girl.
A chapter filled with joy and possibility, hope and light, love and a multitude of opportunities.
A chapter to explore and grow. To live, to learn, to love—and to discover who you are.
As the pages of your life continue to turn, and one chapter ends while another begins, I hope you always feel my love—firmly and forever—embedded within your heart and soul.
Happy May! You know what they say: “April showers bring May flowers.” I always cross my fingers and wish for this to be true, because those May flowers always signal that summer is just around the corner, and all that unwelcome pollen is no more!
May is also the month that we get to celebrate moms. Mark your calendars for May 11 and take some time to celebrate all the moms in your life: the moms, stepmoms, grandmas, adoptive moms, first-time moms, and more! They deserve it.
Each month, we are honored to feature residents on our cover to help you get to know your community a little better. This month, you’ll get to meet the Fermented Friends, a wonderful wine group that may inspire you to start your own! Be sure to check out their article!!
Our team loves providing you, our readers, with stories of local community members. If you know of a family or individual interested in being featured in future issues, feel free to email me. I love to get to know more of the families that make up this community, and your help is greatly appreciated in continuing to make Brunswick Forest Living Magazine succeed!
As always, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay grateful!

Meet the Experts Behind the Smile
DR. CHAD BIGGERSTAFF, DDS – PRACTICE OWNER
Dr. Chad Biggerstaff isn’t just a highly skilled dentist; he’s a Wilmington native with deep roots in the community. A graduate of UNC’s School of Dentistry, Chad’s passion for lifelong learning has taken him to some of the world’s top dental education programs, including the Pankey Institute and Spear Education. His advanced training allows him to offer cutting-edge services, from implant placements to CEREC CAD/CAM technology, ensuring that patients receive care that is not only effective but also efficient.
Chad’s approach to dentistry is grounded in a simple philosophy: treat every patient like they’re part of his own family. This belief is evident in everything he does, from designing personalized
treatment plans to ensuring his team provides a warm, welcoming environment.
Outside the office, Chad is all about family. He and his wife Julie, who he met at the UNC School of Pharmacy, are proud parents to three children—Laney, Charlee, and Malik. When he’s not working or spending time with his family, you might find him surfing at Wrightsville Beach or attending services at Port City Community Church.
DR. DAVID VURNAKES, DMD – JUNIOR PARTNER
Returning to his Wilmington roots was a full-circle moment for Dr. David Vurnakes, who joined BlueWave in 2018. A graduate of East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine, David first fell in love with dentistry while working as a dental assistant. His passion grew through experiences like volunteering at NC Missions of Mercy dental clinics, where he saw firsthand the profound impact of a healthy smile.
David’s approach to dentistry blends science, art, and compassion. Like Dr. Biggerstaff, he is a firm believer in continuing education, completing over 100 hours annually to stay at the forefront of dental advancements. Whether it’s restoring a smile with dental implants or offering invisible braces to straighten teeth, David takes pride in helping patients achieve both health and confidence.
Outside of work, David is an avid water enthusiast, enjoying fishing, paddle boarding, and beach days with his new Golden Retriever puppy, Jerry. His goal? To train Jerry as a therapy dog, though he admits he’ll settle for a good game of fetch on the sand.
DR. ANDY GOULD, DMD – ASSOCIATE
The newest member of the BlueWave family, Dr. Andy brings nearly 30 years of experience to the practice. A Pennsylvania native, Andy relocated to North Carolina in 2023, drawn by the vibrant
community and coastal charm. His expertise ranges from root canals to Botox and fillers to Invisalign and dental implants. Andy takes a comprehensive approach to patient care, ensuring each visit is comfortable, effective, and informative.
Andy and his wife, Ami, live in Brunswick Forest and are proud parents of two grown daughters. When he's not in the office, you'll find Andy on the golf course, biking, hunting, or exploring new travel destinations with his family.
WHY BLUEWAVE DENTISTRY?
“At BlueWave Dentistry,” says Dr. Biggerstaff, “we believe your smile is your signature, and we want to help you make it the best it can be. Our services range from cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening and veneers to restorative care such as dental implants and crowns. And with advanced tools like 3D imaging and intraoral cameras, we can diagnose issues early and offer more treatment options than ever before”.
But technology isn’t the only thing they offer. Their team is dedicated to building relationships based on trust, honesty, and respect. They know that going to the dentist isn’t everyone’s favorite activity, which is why they focus on creating a relaxed, welcoming environment where you feel cared for—not just as a patient but as a person.

Turning Houses Into Homes
BY DOREEN SARGENTE
If there’s one thing Drew and Mary Ellen know, it’s how to take a tired kitchen or bathroom and give it a fresh new life. As the powerhouse team behind LRG Kitchen and Bath Design (formerly Indigo Blooms Kitchen and Bath), they’ve been helping Leland homeowners transform their spaces with everything from full remodels to cabinet door replacements. Their approach is simple: treat clients like family, keep pricing transparent, and go above and beyond to make sure every project is just right.
Drew isn’t new to this game—he’s been in the business for over 35 years, running a similar company in Maryland. Mary Ellen, on the other hand, comes from a background in sales, marketing, and design at the corporate level. When they moved to the Wilmington area, they decided to combine their talents, and LRG Kitchen and Bath was born.
“We love what we do, but more than that, we love who we do it for,” says Mary Ellen. “The people here are amazing! So many of our clients become friends, and we get to hear incredible stories about their lives, their families, and their adventures before retirement.”
For Drew and Mary Ellen, a kitchen isn’t just a kitchen—it’s the heart of the home. It’s where neighbors gather for drinks, where grandkids sit on the counter helping bake cookies, and where families make memories. Bathrooms? Same thing. After all, who doesn’t want a relaxing, spa-like retreat right at home?
Their workdays are never boring. Whether meeting new clients, designing dream spaces, or checking out the latest installation, no two days are alike. “Every day is fun because every day is different!” Mary Ellen laughs.
One trend they’re seeing more of lately is cabinet refacing—a quick and budget-friendly way to refresh a kitchen without the hassle of a full remodel. Instead of tearing everything out, they replace just the cabinet doors, giving the space a whole new look in about five days. It’s a great option for homeowners who want a change without weeks of construction dust.
When they’re not busy designing dream spaces, Drew and Mary Ellen stay active. They enjoy pickleball, golf, live music, and, in Mary Ellen’s case, Mahjong—which she swears will keep her young! They also have four grown kids, three in Maryland and one in Brooklyn.
The couple is grateful for the warm welcome they’ve received since opening their business in Leland. “We love meeting people—whether in their homes or at our showroom,” says Mary Ellen. “This is more
than just a business for us; it’s about building relationships and creating spaces that truly feel like home.”
So, if your kitchen or bathroom could use a little love, LRG Kitchen and Bath is ready to help. Whether it’s a full remodel or just a fresh new look, Drew and Mary Ellen are all about making the process easy, enjoyable, and perfectly tailored to you.
Not ready for a complete remodel, but want a new look?
Cabinet Refacing could be the answer!

A TOAST TO 10 YEARS OF WINE, LAUGHTER & LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS
BY DOREEN SARGENTE
Back in July 2015, a spark of inspiration struck one couple who decided it would be fun to form a wine tasting group. They envisioned gatherings filled with great wine, lively conversation, and camaraderie. With this vision, they compiled a list of likeminded, fun-loving couples and sent out an email outlining their intentions. The response was overwhelming—within 30 minutes, every couple had enthusiastically signed on. Thus, Fermented Friends was born.
The group quickly agreed on the name "Fermented Friends," which perfectly captured their shared love of wine and friendship. From the start, the emphasis was on keeping things fun and lighthearted, and over the years, that spirit has remained the hallmark of their gatherings.
WINE THEMES AND FRIENDLY COMPETITIONS
Each gathering is hosted by one of the eight couples, who choose a theme for the evening. Themes can range from exploring a specific wine varietal or region to more creative ideas. One of the group’s favorite themes, “The Price Is Right,” challenges participants to guess the price of each wine tasted, with a prize awarded to the person whose guess is closest without going over. The winner earns the illustrious title of Omniscient Oenophile— bragging rights included.
Another unforgettable evening took place in February 2023, in honor of Valentine’s Day. The theme was marriage, celebrating the group’s many years of wedded bliss. Each couple brought their wedding photo, walked in to “The Wedding March” while holding a bouquet and their picture, and shared stories about their weddings. Champagne flowed, and the night ended with a wedding cake and favors.
No matter the theme, the focus remains on having fun. Blind tastings often take center stage, with a casual competition to identify the favorite wine of the evening. And while the group has sampled bottles priced anywhere from $7 to $50, they’ve discovered that great wines don’t have to break the bank. Many favorites fall in the $15 range, proving that quality can come at a reasonable price.
ADVENTURES BEYOND THE GLASS
Over the years, Fermented Friends has extended its bond beyond wine tastings. The group has taken trips to explore wineries in Italy, France, and the American West. Closer to home, they’ve visited vineyards in Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina’s wine country. These trips have deepened their appreciation for wine and strengthened their friendships, often leading to what they fondly call “Wine Summits,” where the group tackles the world’s problems—or at least pretends to—over a bottle or two.

Interestingly, half the group shares roots in Pittsburgh, a happy coincidence that adds another layer of connection. Beyond wine, the group enjoys other activities like cards, mahjong, golf, football watch parties, and even a legendary crab feast hosted annually by a couple from Maryland.
ADAPTING
THROUGH CHALLENGES
The “blur of the COVID years” posed a unique challenge for the group, but Fermented Friends rose to the occasion with creativity and resilience. They held socially distanced outdoor gatherings with pizza and lawn chairs, proving that even a pandemic couldn’t diminish their bond. These moments of connection were vital, reminding everyone of the importance of friendship and adaptability.
FOOD, FUN, AND FRIENDSHIP
Of course, the evenings aren’t just about wine. Each couple prepares a spread of delicious dishes to complement the theme, often with impressive results. During one gathering, inspired by an upcoming trip to Greece, the hosts chose Greek wines, and everyone contributed Greek-inspired dishes. The result was a feast worthy of the gods, complete with lively conversation and laughter.
At the end of each year, the group gathers to plan the next year’s schedule. With eight couples and busy lives, finding dates that work for everyone is a challenge, but flexibility and a shared commitment to fun make it happen.
ADVICE FOR ASPIRING WINE CLUBS
When asked what advice they would give anyone considering starting their own wine group, the group is in agreement. "Keep it fun, don’t take it too seriously, and focus on the joy of sharing good wine with great friends. The group’s secret lies in its relaxed approach and emphasis on connection."
CHEERS TO THE FUTURE
Over the past decade, Fermented Friends has become much more than a wine club. It’s a testament to the power of shared experiences, laughter, and, of course, wine. Whether they’re toasting with a $7 bottle or savoring a prized vintage, the evenings are always filled with joy and camaraderie.
Here’s to many more years of good wine, good food, and good friends—because as Fermented Friends has proven, the best things in life are meant to be savored together.
Adds to the VIBRANT THEATER SCENE in the Wilmington Area
Most people have heard of and patronized large musical productions at Thalian Hall and the Wilson Center in Wilmington. Did you know that the Wilmington Area has a vibrant community theater scene also with groups such as Big Dawg Productions , Acting up and The Little Brunswick Theatre. These groups stage a variety of plays from the famous musicals such as
Pine and Curtain is a community theater group that is a little different. They are an amateur theater group with professional standards. Founded in Wilmington, NC- they bring stories from the South that are powerful and yet entertaining. They believe that these stories must be told to inform and to inspire. Theater allows everyone to immerse themselves into the story and have a shared experience with some powerful realizations.
“Good Theater should spark a discussion. It should linger” says the artistic director of Pine and Curtain.
Pine and Curtain is determined to leverage the wide berth of talent in this area and involve a diverse group of people in their productions. The main impetus for the group was the Wilmington Toastmasters Club which meets every Tuesday morning at 7 AM. The founders recognized the speaking talent that was already existing in the group and realized that Theater is a great avenue to channel that talent.
Pine and Curtain is presenting an iconic play “Crimes Of The Heart” by Beth Henley on May 29 and 30. The venue is the big auditorium at CFCC Union Station building in downtown Wilmington.
Consistent with their mission, Pine and Curtain selected this play as the story is based in the south and not only that has a strong link with Wilmington. The movie based on this play was shot in and around Southport.
Crimes of the Heart is a dark comedy that follows three McGrath sisters- Lenny, Meg, and Babe- as they reunite in their hometown of Hazlehurst, Mississippi. As they navigate family secrets, heartbreak, and past traumas, they find strength in their bond and confront the choices that have shaped their lives. Filled with humor, emotion, and powerful moments, this Pulitzer Prizewinning play explores the complexities of love, forgiveness, and the resilience of the human spirit. Don’t miss this unforgettable theatrical experience!
Crimes of the Heart is being directed by Archie Gidwani who lives in Brunswick Forest and has been doing theater for over 25 years. She has acted or directed in well-known plays such as Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire”, Bernard Shaw’ “Mrs. Warrens’ Profession”, Sam Shepherd’s “True West” and many more.
As is typical of community theater, the cast members are all from New Hanover and Brunswick County and are a diverse group with one actor from Argentina.

BY DEBBY DAIGLE
Mark your calendars, lace up those running shoes, and get ready to cheer—because the Brunswick Forest Chicks with Kicks are coming in hot for this year’s WILMA Dash!
On Thursday, May 8th at 6:30 PM, the Wilmington Convention Center will be buzzing with girl power as the “BF Chicks” unleash 320 fierce and fabulous females (ages 22 to 82!) And yes—you guessed it—the Chicks with Kicks are ready to strut their stuff and make some serious noise again this year.

the Chicks with Kicks are poised for a featherflipping comeback. With over three times as many runners, our team is coming strong, sassy, and ready to sprint (or walk!) for the win—and the fun.
We’ll start and finish inside the Wilmington Convention Center’s Expo Hall, after our victory lap (yes, just showing up counts!), we will enjoy the Health Fest After Party and Awards Ceremony, which is open to everyone, whether you're running or just cheering from the sidelines.
So, What Are You Waiting For? The Brunswick Forest Chicks are laced up and ready to rock this year’s WILMA Dash—and we want you there with us!
See you at the starting line, Chicks!

Meet Peanut!
BY CASSIDY SCHWIMMER
“An old soul” might be the best description for this gal. Although she’s almost 4 years old, Peanut never seemed to have kitten energy. She is very touch-me-not unless she’s in a certain mood to receive scratches. Dad is her favorite human being; everyone else is only tolerable at best.
Peanut joined our family at only 6 months old, and she settled in almost immediately. She enjoys chasing around a string, but would much rather snooze on her favorite blanket. She also loves a nice, sturdy cat tree but would prefer not to nap too high off the ground. If a piece of clothing drops on the floor, Peanut can sense it and will lay on top of it almost immediately. Her other favorite things include dry food, staring out the window to watch the sunrise, and watching a football game.
Peanut has a younger brother named Almond. She loves him like any older sister loves their younger brother, which means she also loves tormenting him. She’ll often chase him up and down the house or even sit on him to gain the upper hand.
Peanut usually wins their play-fights, but only because she gives up while she’s ahead to go take a nap. Her family loves her very much and we hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as we have.

BY PATRICIA FAULKNER, MARKETING, CAPE FEAR/WILMINGTON NC CHAPTER LPGA AMATEURS
LPGA Amateur Golf Association (LPGA Amateurs) exists to connect women to learn, play and enjoy golf for fun and networking. It offers a welcoming golf community for women of all skill levels. Many women in Brunswick Forest are already members of the Cape Fear/ Wilmington Chapter of the LPGA Amateurs and are reaping the numerous benefits the association provides.
Debi Affinito, Chair of the Chapter’s Membership Committee and resident in Cape Fear National, reports that “current membership is more than 150 women from Onslow, Pender, Brunswick and New Hanover Counties. An impressive one third of the Chapter’s members live in Brunswick Forest.”
At the start of 2025 there were more than 16,000 members of the LPGA Amateurs in 130+ Chapters across the USA, Canada, and other
countries internationally. What that means for members is an opportunity to connect to women in different regions of the USA or other countries when traveling on vacation or business. Through an easy to use member portal you can find a member, or select a region and find out what opportunities for golf that Chapter may offer during the time you’ll be traveling.
With other Chapters in Charlotte, the Triangle Raleigh area, Sandhills, Piedmont, and Myrtle Beach, this area has over 650 members within a few hours of one another who enjoy the hundreds of golf courses in the Carolinas.
Suzanne Peltier, residing in Park Landing, was a member of the LPGA in Michigan. “When I retired to North Carolina eight years ago, I was pleased to discover there was a Chapter here in the Cape Fear area. I was looking for opportunities to make friends and golf. LPGA met both these goals. The girls are friendly, it’s welcoming to women of all skill levels, and there’s plenty of golf. As a member I enjoy
discounts at area golf courses. With LPGA I can play golf every week at the numerous golf courses in the area, or go on a golf trip, or take a lesson, or play competitive golf, but I just go out and have fun with my friends!”
Cape Fear/Wilmington LPGA Amateurs is celebrating their 20th anniversary since becoming a Chapter on March 18, 2005. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, members were invited to put on their St. Patty’s Day green and golf at the Chapter’s kickoff event at St. James Members Club in Southport on March 16th. Members and their guests enjoyed playing 18 holes with a few fun games, including closest to the hole contests, a putting challenge and a 50/50 raffle. Linda Case, Chapter President and resident of Leland, addressed members at the celebration. “The fact that our Chapter is celebrating its’ 20-year anniversary is a testament to the fact that our members feel a sense of connecting, learning, playing, and most importantly, my favorite, belonging! I joined the LPGA Amateurs

Cape Fear/Wilmington NC Chapter to make new friends and play more golf. I have accomplished both far beyond my expectations.”
Laurie Lindsay, residing in Cape Fear National, went to the event and added, “I decided to join the LPGA Amateurs this year so I could have the opportunity to play different courses in the Cape Fear area and meet golfers from other neighborhoods. The kickoff event at St James was a blast! It confirmed that I made the right decision to join!”
Flexibility is what LPGA Amateurs is all about. Prospective members are able to play twice prior to joining to determine if membership is right for them. In addition to two weekend 18-hole play days each month, members may choose to play 9 or 18-holes during the week at Beau Rivage in Wilmington or Ironclad in Hampstead. On Thursday, a Nine + Dine event at Beau Rivage begins at 4PM.
Ladies Golf Getaways are a highlight of the year, with one taking place in Pawleys Island, South Carolina in April. Participants will play three rounds of golf at different courses, stay at a beach-front resort and enjoy planned evening activities…all at a very affordable price.
If ladies are new to golf or simply wanting to brush up on their game, LPGA Amateurs offers video learning with the Let’s Go Golf 101 Program. The Chapter also offers in-person clinics for all skill levels with local golf professionals such as Nicole Weller, a Brunswick Forest resident, and LPGA Top 50 teacher and PGA teaching professional.
Ann Mateya, in Parkway Crossing, recently joined the Chapter and can’t say enough positive things about the group. “Everyone I have met is friendly and supportive…lots of laughs and stress free. I enjoy meeting new women golfers and sticking around following a round to socialize. After decades of playing competitively, playing with these women is refreshing and stress free. The communication and organization for each event is spot on. I am thankful to all the women that dedicate their time and effort into making the LPGA Amateurs a wonderful experience.”
Members of the LPGA Amateurs also enjoy national benefits including discounts with premier travel partners, savings on major golf events and exclusive opportunities through the LPGA Amateurs Perks Program. In 2025, members will be invited to golf at LPGA Amateurs’ sponsored events in Nevada, South Carolina, Indiana, North Carolina and Florida. This is all in addition to the local benefits of organized golf, golf clinics, social events and discounts from area sponsors!

Strawberries have symbolized purity, passion, and healing since ancient times. Their heart shape and red color associate them with Venus, the Goddess of Love.
Strawberry Buckle
A traditional buckle is an efficient breakfast option, providing significant flavor with minimal effort. The classic buckle is a cross between a light coffee cake and a cobbler, with fresh fruit gently pressed into a quickly made batter. A hefty scattering of turbinado sugar across the top adds a solid crunch, while it also protects the fruit from scorching. MAKES: ONE 9-INCH BUCKLE
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 large egg, at room temperature
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
¾ teaspoon kosher salt
¼ cup full-fat buttermilk
½ cup heavy cream, plus more (optional) for serving
1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1-pint (about 12 ounces) strawberries, hulled and rinsed (if large, cut into halves) Turbinado sugar, for sprinkling
INSRUCTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan, pie pan, or castiron skillet with vegetable oil spray.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, use a fork to stir the lemon zest into the granulated sugar until well mixed. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to infuse. Add the butter to the sugar mixture in the bowl. Using the paddle attachment, beat on medium speed until well combined and pale yellow, about 3 minutes. Add the egg and beat until just combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and the paddle (where the zest may collect).
Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt onto a sheet of parchment paper.
In a large liquid measuring cup, combine the buttermilk, heavy cream, and vanilla.
Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour and alternating with the buttermilk mixture; beat well on medium speed after each addition. The batter will be thick.
Spoon the batter into the prepared pan all the way to the edges without smoothing the surface. Distribute the strawberries evenly on top, pressing
them lightly into the batter, skin-side up if cut. Sprinkle the turbinado sugar evenly across the top.
Bake for 45 minutes, rotating the pan from front to back halfway through, until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool slightly, then serve directly from the pan, pouring some heavy cream on each portion, if desired.
