Food banks are one of the events that Key Club has supported. I believe it to be a very good opportunity, and given my experience with food banks, I would do it again without a doubt. Speaking with so many individuals and assisting them in making purchases was a lot of fun. Since I also assisted with stocking up on supplies, it was intriguing to watch what went on behind the scenes at this organization. I had a terrific time learning how to work with such a lovely business as well.
Our Key Club officers organized a school cleanup on a Friday afternoon, and around 20 volunteers split into 4 groups to see who could collect the most trash. Our group immediately headed toward the border of the school to collect the trash that had collected in the fences and bushes. There were definitely a couple interesting items hiding in the bushes, like a metal fork, but most of the trash that I saw came from food packaging. Usually the old plastic wrappers would flake apart when we tried to grab it, and the paper seemed to sink into the bushes’ branches. Cleanups are some of my favorite volunteer events, and I enjoyed this one so much that I didn’t notice how uncomfortable and sweaty my blue gloves were until I took them off at the end. I honestly thought that our group ’ s stuffed trash bag would win the prize until I saw how much trash the other groups had collected from around the school.

The clean up was certainly interesting! We managed to find lots of trash and I'll admit that I was determined to win for those chips. We found stuff like Dutch Bros cups, cardboard boxes, McDonalds bags, and etc. Even though we found lots of stuff, it still wasn't enough to win unfortunately. But I would say I am very happy that I was able to be part of it. Plus it's all for a good cause, having our campus clean truly does help with the betterment of our school environment!
On February 3, several of the University Preparatory Key Club members signed up to stay after school for an hour and help clean up the school grounds. Everyone was put into groups under the officers who were also able to make it, and we set off. We were given supplies, a time limit, and an incentive: snacks as a prize for the group with the heaviest trash bag. The pressure was on and everyone took off. Me personally, I was fighting for that bag of chips, as I’m sure everyone else was because I could see the other groups jogging to cover entire sections of the school. We worked well within our groups, everyone took on a role and contributed, and seeing what we could find was fun. I’m hoping whoever that beanie belonged to didn’t get in trouble at home for losing it.
When we were two minutes away from the call time, all of a sudden everyone picked up as much as they could, gathered up all their stuff, and absolutely took off with their heavy bags. That in of itself was an extreme sport, trying to keep the bags from ripping while running. Everyone made it back on time, and it was judging time. We handed over the bags and waited for the judge’s answer, and the winning group celebrated and posed for
