Despite December being the season for finals, Alhambra Key Club was able to participate in several services. The most significant service by far was the Rose Float service. Seeing as this event offers some of the most hours compared to other volunteering opportunities, it was no secret that many of our members participated in this event. In this annual event, members help a the same floats that are used in the world famous New Year’s Rose Parade.
Aside from the Rose Floats, Alhambra Key Club had some of their own services as well. Following November, our Salavaftion Army Bell Ringing service had a few dates for December. Volunteers also helped the LA Food Bank distribute food on Christmas Eve. Overall, December was an amazing month for members to gain hours, even with finals going on!
Our Gabrielino Key Clubbers made it to the San Gabriel Mission around 6 p.m to start assisting the City of San Gabriel with their Tree Lighting Ceremony. In the beginning they were just helping conduct lines and making sure groups of people did not form to avoid any cutting. Around 6:50 the city started the countdown to light the giant tree in the middle. At around 7-7:30 Santa Claus came around with a parade with firefighters. The Key Clubbers were tasked to protect Santa Claus and the fire trucks that followed with a very long piece of garland. After the fire trucks and police cars had left, the key clubbers were no longer needed to guard Santa Clause and went back to conducting lines and making sure crowds were staying under control. Around 8 p.m they started to clean up the folding chairs on the lawn that were there for multiple shows hosted by different groups of people. Around 8:30 they finished cleaning up the chairs and picked up some trash that was left on the floor.
As Mark Keppel Key Club enters the month of December, the board decided to wind down the floor on opportunities offered because of finals season. We promoted the Kiwanis Rose Floats decorating hour opportunity for members to participate in. The two weeks of winter break were busy for quite a few Key Clubbers, as a handful of them decided to volunteer to decorate the Rose Parade floats! In addition to the Rose Parade floats, we also offered a clothing donation drive towards Project Wear 2 Care, an initiative aimed towards reducing textile wastes by collecting and redistributing gently used clothing to those in need. We’re looking at what semester 2 has in store for us!
Every year in December, the Rosemead Recreation Center and City Hall host the annual tree-lighting event to celebrate the beginning of the holidays and Christmas.
During this event, our Key Clubbers help volunteer to ensure that everything goes well and smoothly. This event was on December 3rd from 4:00 pm - 9:30 pm. Key Clubbers who volunteered could earn a total of 5.5 service hours and points. Our volunteers first helped set up by helping create the balloon arches, balloon towers, and inflatables. After helping set up, our Key Clubbers were instructed to different stations to work at throughout the night. Some were selected to help with the fun arts and crafts activties, while others were assigned to help guide people. After the incredible performances and tree-lighting ceremony, our Key Clubbers helped clean up. We took down the ballon decorations, took down the inflatables, and helping put away stage chairs and pick up trash. Overall, this event is a service that all of our Key Clubbers look forward to every year, and we are very excited to see what next year brings!
On December 14th, our Key Clubbers got to experience a once in a lifetime performance by the Pasadena Symphony. The Pasadena Symphony is a professional orchestra based Pasadena. The symphony presnets a variety of concerts throughout the year featuring guests, artists, and conductors. This event was split up into two shifts. This first shift was from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM and the second shift was from 5:30 PM - 9 PM.
Volunteers could gain a total of 7.5 service hours and points from this event. At this event, Key Clubbers helped with set up, clean down, and ushering guests. Meals were provided for our volunteers. This event was truly thrilling for all our Key Clubbers.
The month of Deceber is a time of warmth, celebration, and generosity. It is a month where communities come together to spread joy, create lasting memories, and lend a helping hand to those in need. This December, the Jeff Seymour Family Center hosted a food and toy distribution drive on December 22nd and 23rd. On the 22nd, the shift was from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM and on the 23rd, the shift was from 8:00 PM4:00 PM. Many of our dedicated Key Clubbers volunteered for this service! Volunteers helped sort the food and toys into different groups and help pass them out to those in need. Many people showed up, grateful for the support, knowning that this drive would make their holiday season brighter. Through this drive, the Jeff Seymour Family Center was able to provide families with the essnetials they needed for the holiday season!
As the season of winter approaches, San Gabriel Key Club is stnading as frosty as ever! To start, we held a general meeting on the 5th of December. Our Club Cabinet also discussed news during a Cabinet Meeting help on Decmber 5th, Then, the exciting December DCM took place at the Pasadena Ice Skating Center where members enjoyed the ice and socialized! Announced ahead of time on the San Gabriel Key Club page (Instagram), a meat stick and rice krispy fundraiser will be held on January 6 to January 20. The profit will go towards members Key Club funds and gain them 1 fp per bag sold!
