Letter from the Division News Editor Hello Division 6 South! I would first like to thank all of the club editors who consistently submit monthly articles and visuals to me! Without those articles and visuals submitted I cannot fulfill my duty as Editor. Also, thank you to all the people who take pictures at any or all region, division or club events. Lastly I would like to thank FAM for always giving me the support I need, you guys make me a proud Dad. As you may know that this year’s Key Club term is coming to an end; however, I do encourage anyone to run for next year’s Division News Editor! If you have any skills in graphic design, you may want to consider this position! Don’t be scared of the “high” position because you are still like any other member in Key Club! Hello there Polar Bears! I am proud to say you have elected the next Lieutenant Governor, Sally Tsai. This process may be confusing for some so I will go ahead and explain it. You elected Sally at Conclave; however, she will not be officially installed as Lieutenant Governor, until after she has finished her training, and until after my retirement at DCON. It is heart-breaking to talk about my retirement because that means I am one step closer to leaving Key Club. However, I know I am leaving you in good hands with Sally and I plan to attend as many Key Club events I can before I graduate. On another note, this is the time of the year when club elections are held. Meaning all of you dedicated members, (who go to every community service event, have numerous ideas on how to improve the club, or just want improve your leadership skills) this is your chance. You should run for an officer position. There are steps to take to becoming an officer so be sure and talk to the current or past officers at your home club and figure out which position best suits you. If you have any questions, you can always ask me too. Last thing I would like to mention is that school and every class you take is important. No matter how much you detest the teacher, the subject, or the people in your class that class matters. Do not give up so early in the semester. You do not want to look back with regret that if you tried a little bit harder in that class, you could have passed it or gotten a better grade. And although you should be trying your hardest to do well, do not forget to take a break from time to time. I am Sally Tsai, the newly elected Lieutenant Governor of Division 06 South and currently a junior at Chaparral High School! All I can say is that I am so mind blown from the fact that I made it this far in my Key Club career. I remember the immediate past Lieutenant Governor, Wanisa Jaikwang, would always encourage me to take this dream into reality. At that time, I was still in the progress in being accustomed into the division and embracing the Key Club Ohana. Looking back at that memory, I realized I have accomplished so much as a polar bear. From being a usual attendee to division events to taking on the challenge of being Executive Assistant of the division and Vice President of Chaparral Key Club, I am glad to say that I have grown so much as a leader. I would like to send a special thank you to Erica Apostolos, the current Lieutenant Governor, for always being an ongoing inspiration this year as well as Alyssa Alegre for supporting me every step of the way. Now that I have been elected, I am excited to implement my ideas towards the 2015-2016 term! From taking new risks as a division and encourage spirit on a whole new level to praising interclub bonding and of course, increase in DCM attendance, I am ready to take Division 06 South to greater heights with my burning passion and perseverance as a Key Clubber! Nonetheless, I want to plan new service events such as a Beach Cleanup and create leis for children hospitals and more! I believe diversity is the key to showing our members the different ways you can help the community and I will incorporate that into this years’ time! Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member’s hospitals. All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-to-date equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents cannot afford to pay.
Hospitals serving near us: Children’s Hospital Los Angeles - Founded in 1901, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals and is acknowledged worldwide for its leadership in pediatric and adolescent health. Children’s Hospital is one of only eight in the nation – and the only one in the western United States – named to the national “Honor Roll” of children’s hospitals in the 2010 U.S. News & World Report rankings for clinical excellence.

Some project ideas:
Paint the city (school) in Miracles: To spread awareness about CMN use red and yellow chalk to decorate the floors of your school; you can also create information posters and tri-folds and have booths at lunch and collect donations Music Lessons for Miracles: Kids that can play certain instruments offer to teach other students for a donation to the hospital. Fashion Show/Auction: Get clothes donated by students, families, etc. (like prom dresses, or even regular clothes) and have patients from hospitals model them. Another version of this could be a “Men’s Fashion Show.” (Also known as Pageant for Miracle Kids) Movies for Miracles: Host a movie night in the gym or on the football field. You can’t require tickets or donations for the movie (copyright laws), however you can ask for donations and/or sell concessions for cash. A school could also do a movie making contest where each entry pays an entrance fee and then attendees are judges. Paint the city (or school) in Miracles – Create a designated line or circle, etc. and fill it with money Book/toy drive

Here are some officer testimonials from 2014-2015 terms: Greetings! I'm Nessa Vu and I'm the current secretary at Heritage HS Key Club. Deciding to actually run was probably my biggest struggle, but with encouragement from my officers, I thought, "It wouldn't hurt to try.� I'm not proud to say, but I did almost no preparation for my speech, only preparing the key points of my speech. When it came time for the speech, I was nervous and shaking. Fortunately, I was elected as secretary since I was the only candidate. However, I learned my lesson from this experience and will write my speech in this coming election; I strongly encourage you to prepare yourself for the election as well. Personally, I love my position; it allows me to keep our club organized. I take notes during board and general meetings; I take care of sign up/in sheets, etc. Although it requires me to come to absolutely all meetings, I'm glad to have this job. Taking notes during meetings can be difficult when so many ideas and thoughts are being thrown out, but I soon learned to type faster, paraphrase, etc. Overall, this job hasn't been too stressful, although it may seem like a meticulous job. As long as you put in an effort to complete your tasks, the job is great. It's been a fun year and I can't wait to run for an officer position again this year!
Hello! My name is Justin Arntzen and is the Vice President of Paloma Valley. I ran for this position because I loved the deep sense of community and family my key club division and home club had to offer. I prepared myself through paying attention how the officers before me worked and attending leadership workshops and the vice president workshop for DCON. When I was elected I didn't feel very emotional; I was more ambitious in running my club and doing what I can to make it better. Since Paloma Valley has two vice presidents we split the work; I work on a division level since I am also my Division's Interclub Coordinator, and my co-vice working on a home level since she is a more experienced home officer. My position gave me a deeper connection in the key club community and made me love it more than I already did.

Hello! I am Namphuong Nguyen and I am currently the editor at Chaparral's Key Club. I prepared to run for this position by reading about what my duties were and what I would have to fulfill as editor. After reading what I would have to achieve, I decided to run as editor. As editor, one must month report to the entire division about past events through articles and visuals. One of my hobbies include taking pictures and writing, so since taking pictures and writing articles are what to fulfill of this job, this job position benefits me a ton. The most challenging thing about this job would be attempting to attend every event our division and region we have. That I cannot fully commit since I am also in other clubs and loaded with homework, but I do balance the events and homework and really try to attend each event. Overall, I enjoyed this position as being editor. It taught me that responsibility, organization, and dedication is essential to not only this position, but also in life. I am also thankful for Key Club to make me more outgoing as a person, since back then I would hide in my shell for some time. Thank you for reading this D6S. You guys are awesome!
Hello, my name is Evaline May Aguigam and I’m currently the President of Temecula Valley Key Club. It was during my sophomore year that I decided to run for presidency. At the time our Key Club had mostly consisted of upperclassman, which meant there would have to be a new board of officers and the club would have to restart and recruit new members for the next school year. Knowing this club needed someone to lead it to new unprecedented heights, I decided to step up for the position. To prepare myself for Election Day, I started to plan and organize event ideas to propose during my speech and to focus on representing my views associated with being president to ensure my capabilities and qualifications to the club. After being elected into my position I felt determined to bring out the best in our club; however, I had not realized the many duties and responsibilities I had to take hold of during my term. I had not been trained by our previous president, so I also felt concerned for my lack of knowledge but with the help of training conferences and other officers it would get easier. As president you are in charge and responsible for many duties, thus you will need to learn to balance what you’re capable of and to assign and appoint tasks to your board officers. I believe a president should evaluate their club members and officers, set and monitor goals, recruit and motivate members, and most importantly to communicate effectively with others. There are many challenges that come along with this position such as planning events and keeping the club active, providing all details and opportunities for members by attending many division meetings as possible, and to prioritize you with key club. Despite these challenges, taking this president position gives you benefits such as becoming a better leader and gaining such experience needed to lead your life in the future and to be a part of impacting the community. Having been elected president for two terms, my overall experience was challenging but it was worth all the work and progress our club has achieved. Good luck future elects!

After devoting themselves to this amazing organization for 4 years, they deserve their recognition. I encourage graduating seniors to apply for this scholarship. Our Sweet Christmas Together On December 16, Heritage had their last meeting of the year and semester. With that, we had a little Christmas Potluck/Dinner. Of course everyone had to bring food in order to participate, but there wasn't really any trouble with it since all of our members who came brought food. The usual after school members came, which were amazing, seeing how dedicated they were, even to the end. During the meeting, the members enjoyed their foods while the meeting continued. They were all excited for the food of course! For our club’s last moments together it made it even more special. The thing about the potluck was that even though everyone was rushing to get their food, everyone was still so generous. Once everyone was situated and eating food, we all had conversations with each other about what’s going to happen next year, what are some plans for winter break. After the delicious potluck and meeting, it became more like a little party. Some members and officers stayed after the meeting and danced, sang, and laughed together. I heard many fun things happen after, and even though I wasn’t there, I could tell that they were having a blast. It was okay because I know there will be many other opportunities to bond like this in the next new year of 2015, in which will bring the new and old together to form a better Club who helps and becomes a better family. - Cindy Gallegos, Heritage
Decorating the Rose Float To help bring upon good spirits for the New Year, Key Clubbers had the opportunity to volunteer and help build Pasadena’s Rose Floats. Key Clubbers have had the opportunity in helping create these Rose Floats year after year, which are paraded on the morning of January the first. Members who helped and volunteered in this event were able to watch the TV special and see the floats they worked on. This event is one that is always looked forward to every year. One member, Senior Emily Guinn, recalls the first time she volunteered. “I was so excited to help out with such a big project. It was a long, hard day. I had to wear lots of layers since the warehouse was cold to keep the flowers intact. But it was so fun to see the end result!” Ultimately, Key Club members’ hard work in this event is well worth it to see the highly anticipated and beautifully crafted Rose Floats. Every year there is something exciting to look forward to in the Rose Parade and the New Year! Here’s to a fruitful new year Key Clubbers! -

Proving Grounds On December 19th, Paloma Valley held our very first talent show! Proving Grounds was held to help raise money for ELIMINATE MNT. It was mandatory for Paloma Valley key clubbers to help volunteer and help support for this event. To make it fun, all key clubbers came in a Christmas sweater/as something Christmas spirited! This event was an exciting way for not just Paloma Valley Key Club to raise money for ELIMINATE, but for anyone who came to enjoy a great show from many different schools! There were several different performers from several different areas! It was great to see so many faces at this event. Another school from our Division, Chaparral, had their own boba stand to sell during the showcase. Seeing that our Division is helping one another is great. Member Marielle Formoso volunteered and said, “Proving Ground was a very interesting and conflicted showcase. Volunteers sold tickets, ushered the audience, sold boba, and manage the show.” Officer Shanie Kim stated, “Volunteering was difficult to be honest. It was 8 hours long and there was no food provided. Overall, though, I had a good time.” Paloma cannot wait for another successful event! -

Milk Tea, Please! Last December, among the exciting vibes of street teams and singers, Proving Ground was a blast. But during intermission, even with the chilling weather of Menifee, attendees came to Chaparral’s boba stand. As D06S’s first boba stand, Chaparral decided to keep it simple with some milk tea. Dana Truong, Chaparral’s treasurer, also works at Vietnamese food Mecca, Phonomenon, in Temecula. With her experience in the restaurant business and overall amazing cooking skills, she and her family makes some mean tapioca pearls. Member Penny Wang had the magic behind the milk tea. Penny dedicated 5 hours of her time to create 6 gallons of milk tea! A huge crowd of people lined up to satisfy their craving for milk tea flavored boba. With 10 minutes of the show still left, the boba bead supply was all gone! And by the end of the show, there was no boba and no milk tea left! It isn’t an easy feat to prepare for the demand of a big showcase, but Brian Plain and Penny Wang gathered enough cups and boba straws for other events and Chaparral has a couple more boba sales coming up in the future. All proceeds from sales went to raising money for DCON, and we managed to raise $110! Thank you to the hard working members of the DCON Fundraising Committee for being able to showcase such a wonderful drink to Proving Ground’s attendees. Also, a big thank you to Paloma Valley High School for letting us sell boba at Proving Ground! We’ll see you at DCON! -
