The fundamental building block in quantum computing is called qubit which is an abstraction for ease of computation. Unlike a classical bit that can represent either 0 or 1 at a given time, the qubit can exist in a superposition, representing a combination of both states simultaneously. Quantum entanglement allows to manipulation of the state of one qubit and can guarantee the state of another qubit that is entangled with it. This gives quantum computers a unique way of exploring vast solution space simultaneously and performing operations on entangled qubits that are not possible on classical computers.

Transforming Scientific Research Rooted in Chemical Simulations:

Quantum computing holds immense promise, especially in Chemical Simulation. Richard Feynman put it in memorable words: “Nature isn't classical, dammit, and if you want to make a simulation of nature, you'd better make it quantum mechanical, and by golly, it's a wonderful problem because it doesn't look so easy.” Chemical Simulations done today on classical computers use many approximations and quantum computers offer a unique path for accurate simulations and hence better understanding of these processes. This can be very beneficial in fields such as drug

discovery, precision medicine, materials science, new material research, sustainability breakthroughs like carbon absorption, optimizing the cost of manufacturing for materials required at large scale, etc.

Quantum computing offers currently known novel techniques for optimization algorithms, new solution paths for factorizing, solving support vector machines, and search and linear equation solutions. This is not exhaustive and new efficient algorithms are being found each day.

All these solutions hold a good promise to exploit this computational machine in Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, optimizers, cryptoanalysis, etc. which are dependent on solving these mathematical problems.

This is a key area of interest in wider industry use cases, including but not limited to the Financial sector, Travel & Logistics, Medical Diagnosis, Telecommunication, etc.

Challenges on the Quantum Frontier:

While quantum computing presents unprecedented opportunities, in its current state there are also multiple hurdles. We do not yet have found materials and scalable building techniques to create a quantum computer that is fault-tolerant and can be deployed at product-scale use cases. Current limited-scale quantum computers are very noisy and require a large amount of effort to build techniques for error corrections. This is where many researchers are currently focused.

Current qubits are limited in number, noisy, and have limited fidelity. So, the algorithms need to be shallow and narrow. This limits the complexity of the problems that can be tackled immediately.

Quantum Computing requires a new way of logic building. This is a new skill that needs to be acquired and the workforce needs to be ready. The limited availability of skilled resources is slowing down the development of breakthrough algorithms.

Nevertheless, even minor lapses in security can lead to a surge in cyber attacks. For instance, granting shared control over packaging lines or plant control systems can render a plant susceptible to cyber risks. This raises a significant question: are the benefits of IoT tools, such as increased throughput, reduced downtime, improved flexibility, and enhanced performance, worth the potential compromise of data, unauthorized access, and substantial losses due to cyber damage?

Speaking about the valid and understandable concerns regarding the blurred lines between IoT advancements and cybersecurity risks, Jeff Winter, an Industry 4.0 thought leader, said, “So this is a tricky question because there is no absolute right or wrong here. This ultimately comes down to a judgment call about risk. The more you start to utilize new emerging technologies, the more you increase your risk to security-related incidents because pretty much all the new industry 4.0 technologies, to be fully optimized, require access to the internet.”

Jeff also mentions that cybersecurity concerns are not limited to data loss and leakage. If cyber risks attack industrial control systems, it could affect functionality by hindering or infesting it with internal or external malicious factors, such as tampered files displayed on HMI.

Ohio State University’s best brains have created an AI tool called G2Retro that accurately predicts molecular reactions, slashing excessive testing time and expediting the process of drug development and production, which hugely relies on retrosynthesis.

Retrosynthetic analysis is a problem-solving approach used in organic chemistry to plan the synthesis of complex molecules. As G2Retro is purposed for assistance in drug development, it had to undergo a reliability test. It was asked to predict synthesis routes for four existing drugs: Oteseconazole (for vaginal yeast infections), Mitapivat (for haemolytic anaemia), Tapinarof (for plaque psoriasis), and Mavacamten (for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). The test run was a massive success because G2Retro not only got the usual reactant structures correct, but it also generated alternative synthetic predic

tions in a matter of minutes, a task that would have taken a human drug developer hours or days.

“Our generative AI method G2Retro is able to supply multiple different synthesis routes and options, as well as a way to rank different options for each molecule,” said Xia Ning, PhD, main author of the study and computer science and engineering faculty at Ohio State University.
