NOTIFICATION THERE WILL BE A VOTE ON THE FOLLOWING PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO CVR BYLAWS AT THE CLUB’S MONTHLY MEETING ON MAY 10, 2016

Background:

Article 9 Section 1 of the CVR Bylaws states, “The Bylaws may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members present at any regular or special meeting of the club of which due notice of the meeting, and of proposed amendments, has been made known to the members through Challenge and the Club website two weeks prior to the meeting.”

Proposed amendments to CVR Bylaws (in italics):

• In Article 4 Section 2 Principal Officers, amend “Assistant Treasurer Drivers Education” to “Vice Treasurer Drivers Education,” and amend “Assistant Treasurer Club Race” to “Vice Treasurer Club Race.

Rationale for amendments: The adjective “vice” is consistent with the titles of other positions in the club: Executive Vice President, Vice President of Drivers Education and Vice President of Programs.

• In Article 4 Section 7 Duties of the Treasurer, add clarifying language to the last sentence in the section. The sentence is currently written, “The Treasurer shall have direct control and supervision over the Club’s assets, and of payment of the Club’s debts and obligations.” The sentence with amendments would be written, “The Treasurer shall have unrestricted access and supervision over the Club’s assets, over all the Club’s financial accounts and over all payments of the Club’s debts and obligations.”

Rationale for amendments: The bylaws should be explicit in stating that the Treasurer has direct control and supervision not only over the Club’s primary financial accounts but also over all other financial accounts. The bylaws should also be explicit in stating that the Treasurer has direct control and supervision over all payments of the Club’s debts and obligations. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED... It has been a busy month for your editor. With the ski season coming to a premature end I’ve been working on getting ready for the upcoming summer boating season. After spending the winter doing lots of research, I think I have finally found a way to combine two of my other interests into one. Funny thing though, figuring out how to step the mast on the cowl and the proper way to mount the cleats so that they don’t pull out was the easy part. The real problems started when I tried to register my new creation with the CT DMV. Apparently they do not recognize “wind” as an approved power source on registration forms, and furthermore, I think that my “vehicle” ought to be exempt from emissions testing. Hmmmn.

I

Hopefully next month I’ll have all the bugs worked out. Happy April 1st. Look forward to meeting you at a CVR event in the future.

Program Coordinator Needed! This is a great opportunity for you to contribute to CVR in a significant way. CVR is looking for a new Program Coordinator to work with our V.P. of Programs, Jeff Coe and Program Coordinators Todd Drury and Frank Sena. The Program Coordinator’s responsibility is to help with the creation, planning and organization of these very popular events, while getting to know many wonderful CVR members. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your talent and give back to the CVR community. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic Porsche fan, who comes to the position “conflict of interest free”. The 2016 DE season started with our annual Winter Workshop held on Saturday March 5th. We had vendors that not only helped as sponsors for the event but also presented us with all we could need for our cars, from trailering and car prep to storage needs. Danbury Porsche loaned us a new Cayman S with a six speed transmission to put on display outside, for everyone to admire as they entered. Yes, a manual transmission. It also had the sport exhaust option—what a great sound. I was lucky to get to drive the car to the Workshop the night before and then again to return it to Danbury Porsche. While driving in the sport plus mode it will blip the throttle for you when downshifting gears. Danbury Porsche also loaned us a Cayenne GTS in charcoal grey, with a Pano roof. The driving comfort is noticeably improved from the old V8s.

T

Malachy Tracey, Porsche Ambassador from Danbury Porsche, spoke to us about all of the coming changes in the new Porsche cars, including turbo-charging, the new 911R monster and discussing briefly the concerns of many about how the limited run cars are hard to purchase early on but come up for sale shortly after delivery for much more than what they originally sold for. This last topic is one that has become a big concern with Porsche, because they want the Porsche enthusiast to be able to buy the cars that they love, instead of the cars going to brokers, who only intend to buy the car to flip it for a giant profit. Our next sponsor was Todd Drury of TR Building & Remodeling. Todd presented us with an overview of what his company offers, from that one-off custom home to the ultimate garage. The garages were beautifully designed and a number

of drivers expressed interest. To see the TR portfolio, check out www.trbuilt.com. With more and more people in the DE program going from driving their car to the track to purchasing a trailer, we asked Bobby Fantarella from Elm City Trailers to be a return sponsor. Bobby discussed the different makes and styles of trailers that he carries, along with the ‘how-to basics’ of trailering and general scheduled intervals for trailer maintenance. If you are thinking of a new or used trailer, or adding any accessories to your existing trailer, Elm City Trailer can fill all of your needs. To see the products that they offer, check out www.elmcitytrailer.com. When it comes to track car safety and accessories, Stable Energies Motorsports has all you need. They have supported our Workshop for many years and we

were happy to have them return. For the beginner to the full time racer, Bob, Joe, and Ben brought all of the newest safety equipment, including helmets, driving suits and the newest head and neck safety equipment. Joe and Bob gave us an education on how the Hans-type devices work, with hands on displays of different devices and videos of the devices working in real-time accidents. To not use this device just makes no sense to me. It was amazing to see the results of a front-end impact at only forty miles per hour, with and without wearing a Hans device. Once you have seats and harnesses installed in your car you must get a Hans device. With the new season ahead of us, I just wanted to congratulate our 2015 winners, shown below, who were announced at the Annual PhotoFest back in November:

Instructor of the year for 2015: Victor dos Santos DE Enthusiast for 2015: Magnus Evertson Dale Smith Award winner: Dave Hutchings When you see them at the track, congratulate them on their well-deserved awards.

TR Building & Remodeling, and Bobby Fantarella from Elm City Trailers. Thank you to all who came to the Workshop and who support our club throughout the year. After the Workshop, we had to get the Cayenne GTS and the Cayman S back to Danbury Porsche. When I use the phrase “had to,” I really mean “enjoyed.” The Cayenne GTS was so smooth and the Cayman S was just a thrill to drive. Besides shuttling cars, we also took the extra food down to the Dorothy Day Food Pantry in Danbury, for them to distribute to those that depend on the shelter for support. They were very grateful for the donation. Our first 2016 DE track event is at Lime Rock Park on April 11th. After that, we have two Advanced DE Days with the ClubRace and then another regular DE on May 16th. June brings our annual WGI event and everyone is excited to drive the newly paved course. We will be at Palmer Motorsports Park in July and then back to Lime Rock Park at the beginning of August.

The new addition to our schedule is a three-day event at Watkins Glen in August. We have been on the waiting list for a weekend event for as long as I can remember. We were offered August 19-21 (Fri-Sun) and we accepted the dates. This should prove to be a very popular event, with our Advanced drivers getting Friday and everyone getting Saturday and Sunday. We are hoping that everyone who loves this track will do all three events: June, August and October. Yes, the drive there is a bit longer than the drive to Lime Rock Park, but the track is so much fun to drive that the travel time there should not be a deterrent. All of our DE events are posted on both ClubRegistration.net and the CVR website. Check your calendar and plan your 2016 DE track days. If you are in one of the beginner groups, remember to register early, on opening day if possible. The beginner groups always sell out. See you at the track. Dave

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

RALLY — IT’S NOT JUST THE CARS, IT’S THE INSTRUCTIONS! Rally-on in 2016!

The design of the Spring 2016 club rally is well underway. It will travel on some excellent driving roads in Southington, New Britain, Berlin and Middletown— as we have noted previously—in the middle of the state. It will begin at the Dunkin’ Donuts located at 1100 Berlin Turnpike in Berlin, and end at Chili’s Restaurant in Cromwell.

T

“Fo llowing in the tradition of our recent gimmick rallies,

we will try to make this rally fun for beginners and challenging for experienced rallyists.”

The rally is being set up by Tim and Christine Beckwith, the 2015 Rallyists of the Year, so it should be pretty interesting. Following in the tradition of our recent gimmick rallies, we will try to make this rally fun for beginners and challenging 32

for experienced rallyists. Since the Beckwiths are not running this rally, the competition for the 2016 rallyist of the year is wide open—so be sure to run both our Spring and Fall rallies so that you can compete for the 2016 Rallyist of the Year award (which is a lovely plaque that you get to keep for one year, unless you win it again in 2017). We plan to feature some brand new “traps” on this rally as well as those of the usual variety, with some road name changes, some sign interpretation challenges, some questions to be answered along the rally route, and some course markers to help keep the score of each rally team while keeping everyone on course. We are expecting about 20 rally teams for this first rally of the year. Please register to reserve your spot using the accompanying registration form by May 27th (early registration is recommended). Required information will also be on the CVR website. Hope to see you on the 5th of June!

Volunteers for checkpoints are always needed. See the contact information below. Lon Hultgren Rallymaster Rally@CVRPCA @B3mtb911

KENT FALLS COFFEE RUN

The first Coffee Run of the 2016 driving season is here, scheduled for Sunday, April 17, 2016. We will meet in Stamford at about 8:30 a.m. to sign in, and after a brief

driver & navigator meeting, we will be heading northward over some beautiful, scenic, Connecticut back-country roads,

on a journey to Kent Falls State Park. The distance from Stamford to Kent Falls is approximately 100 miles and the return route approximately 60 miles. Kent Falls is a series of waterfalls on Falls Brook in the park, a tributary of the Housatonic River. The falls drop 250 feet in under a quarter mile. The largest cascade drops more than 70 feet into a reflecting pool, before traveling over the lesser falls. There is a walking trail which runs upward along Falls Brook, giving a spectacular view of the falls. It is not a difficult walk, but the stairs are quite steep. The town of Kent is five miles south of Kent Falls State Park and offers some nice galleries and shops to browse. Final details are still being worked out, please check the CVR website for additional information. >>>continued on page 37

The Science of Tires at SpeedSport Tuning February saw well over 100 CVR members attending our monthly meeting and they were all treated to a fantastic event. Spencer Cox and Mark Taylor of Speedsport Tuning were our hosts for the monthly event and brought along Ms. Sarah Robinson as the >>> This beautiful Red GT4 was just one of the spectacular cars on display

featured speaker. Sarah is the Motorsport Marketing manager for Michelin North America and was there to talk to us about tires. We started the evening with some time to see the many fascinating cars on display in the SST shop and were then invited to enjoy a fantastic buffet meal provided by our hosts. With our appetites satisfied the meeting started as we asked Mark to come

forward and introduce the SST team and remind the attendees of the wide range of services SST can provide its customers. SST certainly covers the gamut, with expertise in just about every automotive-related area. We then moved on to the CVR-business portion of the meeting, with Frank Sena standing in and handling the presidential duties. As the weather improves, CVR certainly will have a full schedule of activities for its membership. April 2016

With business covered, it was time to hear from Sarah. After giving us a brief overview of her background and role with Michelin, she provided us with a presentation on some tire basics, such as different types of tires and tire maintenance. We quickly

learned that she is not a big fan of all-season tires for residents of Connecticut. She then explained that tires have two main design aspects: compound and tread design, and that the combination of these two attributes results in tires designed for specific usage.

All tires have their “sweet spot of a top performance range based on the temperature and climate climate in which they are asked to work. Summer tires work great down to about 40 degrees; Winter tires (not snow) cover the range below that. All-seasons try to straddle both ranges, but when it gets really cold or really hot they will be working in conditions which are less then optimal for their design. And that was just the beginning of the knowledge she imparted. The CVRers had question after question on everything >>> Sarah Robinson, Motorsport Marketing Manager for Michelin North America

from Nitrogen-filled tires to run-flats. We ended up having to wrap up the questions before they were all answered, but the crowd was enthusiastic and excited by all they had learned. We finished the meeting with our raffle and thanked Mark and the SST team for so generously hosting our event. After the meeting concluded, it was no surprise to see Sarah cornered, like a rock-star, for more questions from the CVRers needing further tire information! We hope to see you at a monthly meeting in the near future. Please be sure to register using your ConstantContact invitation, which you’ll be receiving during the first week of each month. Thanks, your CVR Programs crew.

HOURS OF DAYTONA The Beginning

STORY AND PHOTOS

Walt Hyjek

44

April 2016

While the Northeast was thawing from the previous week’s snowstorm, in Florida it was raining and cool. During qualifying, the Porsche 911 RSRs, numbers 911 and 912, qualified first and second in class, as well as overall. The order of qualifying begins with the GT Daytona class, then GT Le Mans, Prototype Challenge, and ends with the Prototypes. The GT cars qualified while the track was

dry. Then it rained, which allowed the Porsches to out-run the Prototypes. If you recall the previous race, the final race of the season at Road Atlanta—Petit Le Mans, a Porsche beat the Prototypes in the rain, finishing first in both its class and overall. The Daytona International Speedway is a twelve-turn, 3.6 miles long track, with banking aiding the drivers through the four

outer turns. The re-modeling of the grandstand had been finished in time for the start of the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. Porsche entered two new racecars, along with one which had been updated for 2016, efforts which many other manufacturers would not attempt. For its entry in the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship GT Daytona

class, Porsche debuted its 911 GT# R, along with the Cayman GT4 Clubsport in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, and the 911 RSR, the car and team which had three national championships last year (Team Porsche North America ended last year’s Tudor Sports Car Championship with an overall win at the Petit Le

Mans race, thereby securing the three GT Le Mans championships of: Manufacturer, Driver— Patrick Pilet (France)— and Team). 2016 started with an eye-opening, fastest lap qualifying run, in the rain, for this 54th Rolex 24 at Daytona. Earl Bamber (New Zealand) missed winning the GTLM class by only 12 seconds, after a full 24 hours of racing.

Battling team Corvettes, the drivers Frederic Makowiecki (France) and Michael Christensen (Denmark) took third place, after holding the lead until 36 minutes remained, thus adding points at the start of the new WeatherTech Sports Car Championship season. The sister 911 RSR, with its driver, Le Mans winner Nick Tandy (Great Britain),

and fellow drivers Patrick Pilet and newest Porsche factory driver Kevin Estre (France), started at pole in the strong GTLM field. After defending the lead until only five hours were left to go, a driveshaft problem dropped them to eighth place, still garnering points. Meanwhile, in the GTD, GT Daytona, and new international GT3 class

specifications races: the newest Porsche entrant, Porsche GT3 R, #22, WeatherTech Racing and the #23, Team Seattle GT3 R, both prepared by Alex Job Racing, along with past GTD class winner #73, Park Place Motorsports, each held the lead during the race. But it was Black Swan Racing, returning this year to Porsche, who took their car

Driver/Owner Tim Pappas (Boston, MA), Nick Catsburg (The Netherlands), Andy Pilgrim (Boca Raton, FL), and Porsche factory driver Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, CA) shared the #540, Black Swan Racing Porsche, staying clear of any on/off track issues in the black and green Porsche. They took second place in class, coming within 3 seconds of winning, and look to become serious contenders for the team and driver titles this year. Other Porsches—the 22, 23 and 73—did not fare as well, all encountering problems affecting their finishing positions. The newest of the Porsche racecars, the Cayman GT4 Clubsport,

made an impressive global premier with two entries, the #33, C.J. Wilson car and the #21 Muehlner Motorsports car, driven by Jeroen Bleekmolen (The Netherlands) and Bob Doyle (Killingworth, CT), which finished sixth. Great weather made for very competitive, exciting racing. I hope you will come out and support our friends and Porsche teams this year at Lime Rock and the many other tracks at which Porsches race. Please watch for my future stories of races, including an in-person report from the 24 Hours of Le Mans. See you at a race, or a Connecticut Valley Region, PCA, event this year.

We will once again be hosting a special display of Porsches, with this year’s focal point on Porsche’s GT cars. With the Le Mans winning 911 GT1 reaching its 20th birthday, we wanted to celebrate the great numerical GT variants Porsche has produced through the years. Our goal is to showcase a diverse array of GT Porsches, ranging from early 356 GTs, to the GT1, Carrera GT, GT2, GT3, and GT4. Road and race cars are welcome for this display, as these cars’ origins are closely tied to the race track. This will be a rare opportunity to see all of these GT Porsches together, in one setting. If you own one of these remarkable cars and would like to participate in the special display, please register in advance. You’ll not only be included in the GT exhibit, but you will also receive a special award and goodie bag.

The Concours will retain many elements from previous years, including: 12 or more Porsche classes for the event. Based on pre-registrations, we will divide the expected Porsches into the most appropriate competitive classes as possible. The “My Other Car” group which is open to any non-Porsche. This group has grown tremendously in popularity since its introduction in 2011, and we look forward to seeing what our attendees bring this year!

The “Patina Award” winner, who will be selected by the Concours chairs. This special award will recognize the car (or tractor) that best displays the wear and tear of aging and regular use, track time, or restorations in progress.

In the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Porsche overcomes the boundary between street sports cars and racing vehicles more than ever. It contains the maximum of motorsport technology that is currently possible in a 911 approved for street use.

There is a world championship exhibit for visitors who are motorsport fans. The Porsche 919 Hybrid dominated in the 2015 race season of the FIA WEC (World Endurance Championship). In the second year after returning to the Le Mans prototype class, the LMP1, the race cars with start numbers 17, 18 and 19 won the three most important season trophies with the manufacturers’ title, drivers’ title and victory at Le Mans. In Berlin, visitors can see the winning vehicle that Porsche factory drivers Earl Bamber, Nico Hülkenberg and Nick Tandy drove to victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year.

Along with these seven vehicles, further insights into “Fascination Sports Cars” are communicated via technology models and interactive exhibits. Porsche E-Performance, for example, is explained by 3D holograms. Impressive animations illustrate – in three-dimensional perspective – important brand milestones based on the Panamera S E-Hybrid, the 918 Spyder and the Mission E concept car. In addition, not only can visitors test the new Porsche Car Connect app for themselves at a 718 Boxster that is on exhibit at a specially designed “Connectivity Corner.” At an “inspiration

C H A L L E N G E

table” they can also directly interact with Porsche by configuring their personal vehicle or learning about Porsche’s technologies of tomorrow. Also awaiting visitors is a 360-degree rotating model of the engine from a current 911 Turbo S. During their visit to the VW Group Forum interested persons can also test their power levels. Energy can be charged on a “performance card” at six interactive exhibits. Participants who are able to collect 100 per cent “Performance” get a souvenir gift. At the end of the exhibit, Porsche fans can also sit in a new 911 Carrera S Cabriolet and have a photo taken to capture the moment.

For a special type of brand experience, interested persons can also rent vehicles of the current model range. The “Porsche Drive” mobility concept lets users explore the capital in a car of their choice, such as a Porsche 911, Boxster or Cayman. Customers can enjoy the fascination of Porsche for any desired time period between one hour and a maximum of one week. Vehicle rental, pickup and return are located at the DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum at the heart of the metropolis. More information is available at www.drive.porsche.com. In addition, the brand exhibit will be a focal point of “Nachtschicht – Berlin

Design Night” that takes place on June 3. Berlin agencies, studios, ateliers and showrooms will offer a look behind the scenes until midnight. On this evening, Porsche designers will present their creative work at the DRIVE. The DRIVE Volkswagen Group Forum is a Group communication platform that is located in Berlin. Since 2015, the Volkswagen Group has been showcasing its twelve brands and Financial Services AG for the first time worldwide in the heart of the German capital. In rotating brand and thematic exhibits, DRIVE. is the Group's platform for mobility which is supplemented by a very diverse events programme.

The DRIVE. centre is open Monday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. Admission is free-of-charge. You will find more details at www.drive-volkswagen-group.com/.

WANTED Greetings CVR Friends! You may remember me several years ago passing you at Lime Rock in the red BoParkerPhoto.com 944 Turbo. I’m sorry to say I haven’t been on the track recently but I do greatly miss all my CVR friends. retirement home, and even a crowd control / security agent at a night club! Since graduating, I haven’t run into a situation that grabs me and is rewarding enough to want to continue long term. I’m open to trying just about anything that will engage me with interesting, enlightening experiences and good people. I’m looking for something in Fairfield County that I can sink my teeth into and be justly rewarded. I’ll work like we all take the downhill at Lime Rock: turn-in, feed the gas and don’t lift!

Looking for garage space. Ideally within 15 miles of Glastonbury area, for one car for winter months. Mike Rizzo 860-918-4098 11-15 Porsche 911 Coupe or Targa. Any condition considered. 860-350-1140 forzamot@aol.com 4-15 (5-16)

Any opportunities for me in your organization or business leads I can follow? I’d appreciate a call and will gladly send a resume and be available for an interview.
