Well, here we are, already in September and we only have six DE days left for the 2015 CVR DE season. Myhopeat the beginning of the year was that we wouldgetmorebeginnersouttothetrack toreallyexperiencewhattheirPorscheis all about. To date for this season, our Green and Yellow instructed rungroups havesoldoutforeveryevent.Itisreally great to see so many different people participating, bothnewandexperienced, young and not as young. We had 13 first-timedriversatourJulyLRPevent andbythesmilesontheirfacestheyall seemedtoreallyenjoytheexperienceand Ihaveafeelingthatwewillseemanyof thematfutureDEevents. At our Thompson event in July, we hadtwosunnydayswithplentyoftrack

To date for this season, our Green and Yellow instructed rungroups have sold out for every event. It is really great to see so many different people participating, both new and experienced, young and not as young.

Story by

In May I had an invitation by the President of Porsche Motorsports North America, Jens Walther to visit the headquarters of Porsche Motorsports, Porsche Racing Team and Customer Team Support, in California. I wanted to see their old facility versus

their new facility being built, similar to the one that had just opened in Atlanta, Ga. Called Porsche Experience, you can take new Porsches out on their own track and drive them. The new California facility is being built in Carson, California on 53 acres, also with its own test/driving track, which I

C H A L L E N G E

Walt Hyjek

plan to see next year, hopefully at the grand opening. As I follow my GPS to Santa Ana, California it shows that I have to turn into an Industrial Park where I finally arrive at the address. I only see two one-story buildings connected by fencing, but one building September 2015

55

with the correct number has several Porsches parked outside. This must be the right place. As I walk up to the front door for my meeting, I see a small sign on the door, “Porsche Motorsports North America, push button for access”. As I push the button a person unlocks the door and verifies that this is the office, and it turns out that is Jens Walthers secretary. While I am waiting I begin a conversation with several workers about the cars they drive, and their work at this facility with Porsche. Shortly after, Jens Walther, who I have become well acquainted with over the years, took me on a tour of their facility, but at the start he politely asks me to NOT TAKE PICTURES. WHAT! (Not out loud.) I did not expect that but I of course agree. He began with an introduction to his office staff and took me into the first garage. This is where they rebuild the Porsche team and other customer racing engines. The place is spotless even though they teardown over 120 race engines a year. Next we went into the dyno area where they test each engine for approximately two hours before it leaves the facility for a customer race team or the Porsche factory race 56

September 2015

team. Our next stop was the adjacent building where they are reconditioning a customer’s 911 with some updated equipment. Porsche,

>>>Jens Walther, President of Porsche Motorsports North America

after the buyout of Andial, has started to take on customer’s cars for refurbishing, and the next

vehicle I saw was a Porsche 917 that they have been working on for two years. What an amazing vehicle, a Type 912 flat 12 cylinder engine, twin plug, dual distributors and iconic horizontal cooling fan. All in a light weight spaceframe chassis. It was going in for paint, the Gulf colors, blue and orange. That was basically all the information they could tell me. Estimated price $20,000,000! From there we went to where they rebuild transmissions and saw a transmission dyno and all the Porsche Weissach software used to test the transmissions with the new PDK electronics. Lastly, we

headed over to the parts department and met the project manager who is responsible for acquisition of all parts needed for the cars they are working on, like that 917, anywhere in the world. On the way out we met up with Owen Hayes, the director of racing operations at PMNA since June of 2013. After our tour as Jens Walther and I talked he mentioned that he, as President of PMNA, is at every Porsche race in North America. He commented that it was his job as well as his passion. This is the commitment of all of the

58

September 2015

Porsche employees at PMNA. All around his office was evidence of “TEAM commitment and pride, just as I have seen in our club region. He commented that since he has never been a driver he is not one to tell the drivers how to do their job, it is up to the driver and the team to put together their best for each race. For such a small number of employees, I commented, such a large objective. We all should remember that each big project, broken down into small elements put all together equals a completed project.

I look forward to seeing the new home for PMNA next year. You should consider a trip to the Porsche Experience at Atlanta, GA and perhaps also next year to Carson, California, near Los Angeles. A great area with many places to see, and maybe a race. Hope to see you at any Porsche or CVR event. If going to a race, contact me and I would be glad to meet you there. Safe driving and travels to you!
