Victor dos Santos Jay Harder

Photos

On August 18th, CVR visited Palmer Motorsports Park (PMP), also known as Whiskey Hill Raceway, for a DE event open to instructors and advanced drivers. It gave the club an opportunity to preview the course and prepare the instructors for coaching students at our next event there in October. My first impressions were very positive. It is a truly unique track, right here in New England. There are 14 turns, all somewhat different in approach, and yet the flow and rhythm as you drive are fluid and fun. And oh, the elevation change – 190 feet! But the number doesn’t tell it all; it’s how the landscape is used to create stunning turns and complexes that is truly exciting. This track teaches better than any I’ve driven. In several spots, the

line is not as it might traditionally seem. Plus many of the apexes are “around the corner”. But if you look and think ahead, recognize the camber, and feel your car balance, you will carve the right path. And when you get that dance between you and your car right, the reward is pretty sublime. Turns 1, 2, and 3 are a set of fast lefts that dare you to not let up. Sweeping through there with fellow GT3RS instructor Vin Vizzo was a blast. Turns 4 and 5 are a tight, uphill right/left that almost feel like a chicane alpine climb. Those 991s with four-wheel steering excel here, as I realized when I let by Chuck Veth. Six is a quick right that leads to one of the signature turns – the 28

October 2015

banked, descending, cambered, long left-hander Turn 7. It was interesting watching a variety of lines through here – from the “keep it tight and inside” style of Ron Savenor, to the wider approach of Mr. Veth. Turn 8 is a “fast as you dare” left that’s somewhere between a kink and a turn. Watching pros like Dan Jacobs made a fluid arc and cross back over the track for Turn 9 was art in motion. Nine is almost the mirror image of Seven and just as much fun. Turns 10 and 11 are a quick right/left pair that led to one of the toughest turns to perfect, Turn 12. Keith Sanderson and I rode together and studied it realtime. It’s a left-hander that tightens significantly, so concentrating on where you want to be positioned at the

apex, and letting your car tell you the fastest approach to getting there without overthinking it seemed to work best. The reason that position at the apex is so important is because 13 is a quick right-hand flick that then leads to a fast left 14 that heads onto the straight. So the position at 12 is the beginning of a lot of throttle and therefore critical. Which leads to what I thought was the hardest turn to perfect, Turn 1. While the shape of this left-hander is fairly straight-forward, it’s a cresting turn, so you have to memorize the shape of the trackout (which has some room). Plus the approach is when you’re finishing the kink of the straight (similar to Thompson but “kinkier”). I watched this turn all day, and noticed the drivers (like

C H A L L E N G E

Magnus Evertson in his 964 and Brian Dibella in his Cayman S) and drivers with trick suspensions taking a trimmer, earlier entry. All in all, lots of folks were excited by this track and looking forward to returning, including fellow Portuguese Antonio DaSilva, who said it reminded him of Europe. A lot of effort and over 20 million dollars have gone into this circuit. The first time you arrive, you’re immediately impressed by all the blasting and filling

that must have occurred to create this asphalt ribbon. The folks at PMP have an obvious passion for the place, and the crew was outstanding during our visit. They were on top of things, with safety and efficiency always in mind. The breakfast and lunch served by Maw’s Kitchen catering were great. Check out their excellent online reviews. As with any new track, there are developments that will continue. Curbing, more grass, and upgraded

amenities will all contribute to making PMP an even better facility, but for now, they’re off to a great start! As always, Susan and Dave Vaccaro, and all our other club volunteers, did a wonderful job and showed why CVR is such a good group. The track is located between Palmer and Ware, MA, only one hour north of Hartford, CT. Registration is now open for the October 9th and 10th event, so be sure to sign up!

If you’ve been following the latest Porsche news, you have surely seen the official announcement of the new 2017 911 models. Both the base Carrera and Carrera S will now be fitted with a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged engine. To many, this was not a surprise, yet it marks a significant departure for Porsche. C H A L L E N G E

October 2015

For one, it closes the chapter of naturally aspirated 911s – a characteristic of the car that earned it many devoted fans for decades. Moreover, this change now makes all 911s (aside from the current GT3 and GT3 RS) turbocharged. This is quite different, as the 911 Turbo always stood alone as the only model with turbos,

allowing it to tower over all others in outright horsepower and speed. The 911 Turbo will still remain as the range-topping model, but it will now share similar engine architecture with its less checkbook punishing brethren. This being said, turbocharging has many advantages and it has -extreme 911s to date.

Their engines, whether from an early 1976 3.0-liter model to a modern 2015 Turbo S, offer brute acceleration, sometimes when you least expect it (or are ready for it!). Since its introduction, the 911 Turbo has often successfully blown away the competition. Therefore, it only seems right to celebrate the great 911 Turbos that have blazed the path for the

future 911. Given the 911 Turbo’s 40 year reign as the ultimate 911, we had the ideal opportunity to celebrate the car’s history at this year’s 42nd annual CVR Concours. We also benefitted from a perfectly sunny day, helping us assemble one of the greatest collections of aircooled and water-cooled 911 Turbos in one place. In fact,

so many Turbos graced the lawn of Norwalk’s Cranbury Park that we could have easily had a show just for the 911 Turbo. Throughout the morning, more than 50 911 Turbos arrived! Models ranged from an all-original 1977 3.0-liter Turbo with just over 12,000 miles to a current 2015 Turbo S. Both of these cars were positioned in front of the field

of Turbos, allowing onlookers an opportunity to see the drastic evolution of the model. The 50 other examples of the 911 Turbo were neatly split into two groups. Incredibly, we had a perfect distribution of air-cooled models and water-cooled models. Air-cooled examples included nearly all years of the 3.3-liter 930, the 3.3-

liter 964, the 3.6-liter 964, and the 3.6-liter 993 Turbo. Coupes, cabriolets, and even a few Targas were present, along with factory slant-nose cars and many ultra limitededition variants. The water-cooled bunch of Turbos featured many offerings and years of the 996 and 997 Turbos. We had an abundance of cabriolets (an option for the 911 Turbo

that remained unavailable for 15 years, until 2004) paired with many coupes, most of which were finely appointed with a long list of factory options. The group included some “S” variants as well as a GT2 RS, a car that still stands as the highest horsepower 911 ever created (620 hp). Horsepower certainly wasn’t lacking with any of the cars in this group,

easily totaling more than 10,000 just between the water-cooled cars. One could have easily spent all morning admiring the different 911 Turbos, but they would have missed the other 80+ Porsches competing in the different People’s Choice classes. We had a wonderful variety in nearly all of our groups, beginning with the 356 class.

Between vintage race cars, an unbelievable one-owner 356 SC, and a freshly restored 4-cam Carrera, there was a 356 to dazzle all spectators. Other classes proved to be fiercely competitive, such as the early 911/912/ 914, ’84-’89 911, 964/993 911, 997 911, and 924/944/ 968/928 classes. 944’s were a popular car at

this year’s event, and the level of detailing and preparation on several of them was highly impressive. If you looked down the row, many had their hoods lifted to show off their sparkling engine compartments. The 964 (1989-1994) / 993 (1995-1998) 911 group was another class that proved very difficult to pick a favorite. Many special

variants in outstanding overall condition lined this class. Almost every example carried the “S” badge! It was evident that participants were excited by the great turnout and competition, but also anxious about how each of their cars would fare. This added to the drama during the awards ceremony and made for some fun announcements

across all the classes. Needless to say, we had some very close results between many of the cars. As always, we must thank the many entrants and spectators for coming. The event remained lively throughout the entire morning thanks to their patronage. A big shout-out is also due to our volunteers. Without their commitment to

helping plan the event and execute on the many logistical aspects day-of, we would not have had such a smoothly run show. We look forward to seeing many repeat attendees next year as well as many new faces. Given the craze and love for the many 911 Turbo’s at this year’s event, there should be a very bright future for the

C H A L L E N G E

new 911. Turbocharging will undoubtedly transform the car, but we know it will continue the car’s legacy as a perennial performer. Stay tuned for next year’s equally exhilarating Concours theme!

Believe it or not it was a really scorching day. I’m not just saying it this time, I really mean it. The perspiration on my face, everyone putting their chairs under the trees – we should have brought an umbrella for shade or one of those chairs with an umbrella attached. It was a fun day, though, in spite of the weather.

This year I asked kids what Porsche they would like to own when they get older. Here are the responses.

know why she liked red cars, but with a little help she concluded because “they go fast”. Natalie, a good daughter: “Daddy’s 1988 Carrera”, because she “likes the smell” (you can’t beat real leather!). Eli, 2 years old: “a red car because they go fast” (hmm ... I’m beginning to understand why Porsche paints so many of its cars red).

Justin: “a cup car” (I hope he’s started saving!) because they’re race cars and they are super fast.

Noah, a man with a plan: he wants “lots of Porsches”, but in particular an “Irish Green” 964 turbo, “for lots of different reasons”.

Laila, 5 years old: “a red car”. At first she did not

Isabella: “a turbo or a regular 911, silver or white, because of how good they look”, and “the newer the better” (a tried and true philosophy, as the Porsche Buyers Guides always remind us). Followed by a trio of very focused young men: Joey: “a Spyder”.

Hunter: “1970, orange, 911 Targa with a rally kit!” Amazing responses, whether from toddlers or teenagers, since they all show how great Porsches are, and how much the people who own them love them – suggesting that the CVR Concours will be going strong for many decades.

Jackie Sembor

Dillon: “a GT3RS”.

Since graduating, I haven’t run into a situation that grabs me and is rewarding enough to want to continue long term. I’m open to trying just about anything that will engage me with interesting, enlightening experiences and good people. I’m looking for something in Fairfield County that I can sink my teeth into and be justly rewarded. I’ll work like we all take the downhill at Lime Rock: turn-in, feed the gas and don’t lift! Any opportunities for me in your organization or business leads I can follow? I’d appreciate a call and will gladly send a resume and be available for an interview. Please contact me by email: faxparker@aol.com or by cell 203-216-8003. We have poor cell reception at home so do leave a message if I’m not in. WANTED Greetings CVR Friends! You may remember me several years ago passing you at Lime Rock in the red BoParkerPhoto.com 944 Turbo. I’m sorry to say I haven’t been on the track recently but I do greatly miss all my CVR friends. Since graduating University with a degree in Psychology and minors in Finance and Business, I’ve worked in fields that have provided terrific learning experiences: a manager at school in the audio / visual department, a Volkswagen sales agent at Prestige in Stamford, a stint working in a retirement home, and even a crowd control / security agent at a night club! 74
