• InArticle4Section2PrincipalOfficers,amend“AssistantTreasurerDrivers Education”to“Vice TreasurerDriversEducation,”andamend“Assistant TreasurerClubRace”to“Vice TreasurerClubRace.

Rationaleforamendments:Theadjective“vice”isconsistentwiththetitles ofotherpositionsintheclub:ExecutiveVicePresident,VicePresidentof DriversEducationandVicePresidentofPrograms.

• InArticle 4 Section 7 Duties of the Treasurer, addclarifyinglanguageto thelastsentenceinthesection.Thesentenceiscurrentlywritten,“The TreasurershallhavedirectcontrolandsupervisionovertheClub’sassets, andofpaymentoftheClub’sdebtsandobligations.”Thesentencewith amendments would be written, “The Treasurer shall have unrestricted access andsupervisionovertheClub’sassets,over all the Club’s financial accounts and over all paymentsoftheClub’sdebtsandobligations.”

As I write this article, I find the club is at the cusp of an extremely busy year. Aprilseemstobewheneverythingbegins. Whenyoureadthisarticle,theClubRace will have concluded, the New Member Samplerwillhavepassedaswillourfirst Driver's Ed day. These are momentous eventsthatkicktheyearoffintrueCVR fashion. The Club Race is the Club’s biggest event during the year. Not only does it provide great competition for racers from all over the region, but it alsoprovidesagreatsocialeventforall the volunteers. Many volunteers come back year after year, not only to see somegreatracing,butrekindlefriendships with fellow CVRer’s. The same can be said for every other CVR offering. Makeyourplanstodaytoparticipatein somegreatevents.Thecalendarcanbe seenintheChallenge,butpleasecheck thewebsiteforthemostuptodateinformation.Ihopetoseeyououtandabout. For a little background, CVR, Connecticut Valley Region, is part of the Porsche Club of America and part of Zone 1. This past weekend, I attended theZone1President’sMeetingwith17 otherpresidentsorzonerepresentatives. During that meeting, we were updated onmanyinitiativesthatPCAisworking on. I am happy to say that PCA is financially very strong and will continuewithcarraffles,excitingParade venues and other ways of helping the membership.Somethingstolookforare thenewTreffentours.Thesewillreplace the Escape and will complement the Parade.ThenextthreeTreffentourswill

WatkinsGlenInternationalRaceway.In addition,aConcoursandRallyonLong Islandisplanned,aswellasanAutocross at Fort Devens, MA to end the Zone 1 year.Pleasefindmoreinformationabout theseeventsontheZone1website: zone1.pca.org. There was a bit of a scare when news about some financial difficulties up at Jay Peak was published, but the PCA ParadeCommitteehasreassuredusthat theyhavebeenincontactwiththevenues andParadewillproceedasexpected.

You would not believe how many times we have heard the words “I am an Advanced Driver” orbetteryet,“I’ma NationallyCertifiedPCAinstructor”from driversfromavisitingregionthatdon’t measureuptowhatCVRwoulddescribe as anAdvanced Driver or qualify to be anInstructorwithinourclub. Whensomeonewedon’tknowsigns upwithCVRforaDE,it’stheRegistrar’s jobtotryandgetdocumentedhistoryon that person’s driving and/or instructing experience.ThegreatthingaboutPCAis that all of the Registrars and Chief Instructorssharetheirinformationontheir member’sdrivingexperiences.Withthe help of the online registration services, wecanseewhichPCAeventsthedrivers haveattendedandhowmanytrackdays they have in each rungroup. Claims to having20trackdaysinaseasoniseasily verified(ordisproven).

Sincemanyofusdrivewithdifferent regions,weallknowwhichregionshave drivers placed in the correct rungroups andrunsafeeventsandontheflipside, know which regions don’t have drivers groupedappropriatelyordon’tfollowall of the PCA Minimum Standards rules. Unfortunately,thereisstillnotaNational format for advancing drivers from one rungrouptothenext.CVRrequiresseat time and skill to advance. I am always shockedwhenIlearnofadriverthatwent from Green to White in 5 days, I hear about someone becoming an instructor withanotherregionthatisintheYellow rungroup with CVR or something else just as ridiculous. Many times a driver comesoverfromanotherregionandends upplacedinalowerrungroupwithCVR thantherungrouptheyareinwiththeir home region. Some get a bruised ego, otherstakeitinstride.

I’mnotsayingthatthereisanything wrong with a newer car, because there isn’t—theyaregreatfuntodriveandthe cars are built to keep the driver safe. I justthinkthatadriverwhohasneverhad the opportunity to drive an older car is missing out on learning how to really feelwhatacarisdoing.It’sthe‘seatof the pants feeling’ that few will ever experience with a newer car. I truly believethatthemoreseattimeputin,the better we become with our driving and situationalawareness. Withthecarsbecomingfaster,clubs needtobemorediligentaboutadvancing a person up through the rungroups. We need to see past all of the car’s driving

We have, as a club, a National DE TrainingProgramwhereadriverfroma regionisrecommendedbytheirChiefI nstructor to go and participate in the PCA National DE Training Program. Each region is supposed to have an InstructorTrainingProgramwithintheir regiontohelpwitheducatingcandidates on becoming an instructor. Most don’t andjustsendthedriveroff,evenifthey don’t have that many track days under their belt or even days in Black, to an event such as the Zone One 1-day National Program and if they meet the requirementsatthatevent,theyareconsidered‘goodtogo’asaninstructor.What they do in a weekend is something that we spend almost a whole season doing. While the National Program acknowledgesthatsomeonewenttothe classroom,itdoesnotmeanthattheymeet CVR’s qualifications to instruct. Once again,seattimeiskey.Spendingsucha shortamountoftimeinsuchanimportant programiswhywewillnotrecognizean outofregioninstructorthathasnotgone throughanofficialtrainingprogram.For ournewdrivers,thisisimportantbecause youknowthatCVRisonlygivingyoua trainedinstructor,notjustsomeonethat hasgiventhemselvesthetitleofInstructor withoutearningit. CVR takes the Instructor Training Program very seriously and we are one ofthefewclubsacrossthecountrythat hasaveryspecificcriteriaoftrackdays neededintheBlackrungrouptoenterthe

instructortrainingprogram,daysneeded mentoring before getting a student and daysrequiredasaProvisionalInstructor beforefinallybecomingaCVRinstructor and taking the National Course/Test. Unlike last year, the weather gods smiled on Automobile Associates, resulting in an SRO crowd. Many members arrived early to gaze and comment on the stunning Porsches undergoing restoration, conversion into race cars, engine rebuilds, and in various stages of paint preparation. As always, Jim Newton, Scott McPherson, Ken Bronsord and crew sponsored a delectable buffet of grinders—depending where you’re from—salads and tasty cookies. Our featured speaker was Glenn Sinon, Technical Sales Instructor for PPG

Automobile Refinish. Glenn has been painting cars for over twenty-five years and can spot flaws in what you and I think to be a Concours-level paint job. Glenn seems to have PPG paint running through his veins. In his job, he educates body and paint shops on the fine

right spray equipment needed for proper application of PPG’s paint. Glenn took us through the history of automotive paint, from the early 1900s, up to today’s thermostatic (chemical reaction) paint, which cures, not dries. Proper curing takes a minimum of seven-to-ten

days for the solvent to escape from the painted surface. According to Glenn, many European cars have better paint than American cars, and much better paint than Asian cars. Glenn answered many questions from members. Some of the more interesting were:

Original Glasurit paint can be easily matched using today’s new paint. Black can be matched particularly well, but lighter, more transparent paint colors, like champagne and silver, are more difficult to match. PPG offers “Paint to Match.” It has over 40,000 shades of white, alone!

At the Mobil1 12 hours of Sebring—17 turns over 3.74 miles—on March 19th, the race’s 64th running, I viewed a race that had just about everything you think can happen during this race. Driving the Porsche 911 RSR, #911, were Kevin Estre, Patrick Pilet and Nick Tandy. In the #912 were Michael Christensen, Frederic Makowiecki and Earl Bamber. Both Porsche 911

RSRs did not fare well during qualifying, finishing in seventh and tenth positions, with two Ford GTs in between. The race started at 10:40 a.m. under a few clouds, but otherwise, nice, sunny skies. During the 56th lap, the Porsche #911 had taken the GTLM lead, just before—for my second race in a row, third race in the last year—2:00 p.m., when the weather changed

away, the track was further dried using a drying machine, and the restart took place under clearing skies. Still, some showers fell on-and-off until the end. from light rain into a downpour, along with dangerous lightning. It seems I should get a wetsuit for these races. Nevertheless, I was happy not to be wielding a television camera up on one of those high-in-the-air booms, as Florida lightning illuminated the sky. On the 66th lap the race was red-flagged for the safety of all, the television techni-

cians, the helicopter crew, and not least, the racers. Because the stands are metal, the fans were required to leave their seats. The severe conditions resulted in a delay lasting two-and-a-quarter hours. It was only the sixth time in sixty-four races that it rained during the race, the most recent occurrence in 1997. After the delay, some of the water was brushed

In the eighth hour of the race, around 7:00 p.m., the #911 Porsche 911 RSR was coming down the front straight, with an Audi GTD car near the end. As Kevin Estre, in the 911, took the inside line for the turn—Turn 1—and passed the Audi on the driver’s side, the #3 Corvette of Jan Magnussen, competing against the Porsche for the top spot in GTLM, went outside. While turning, passing and moving in front of the Audi on the right side, he hit the simultaneously-overtaking Porsche.

Both spun, hitting the tire-wall and concrete barriers, which brought out the sixth full-course yellow flag of the race, ending the day for both the Porsche and Corvette drivers. As a result of this incident, Scott Dixon took the GTLM lead in his #67 Ford GT, with the #912 Porsche 911 RSR battling the #4 Corvette to the finish. Ultimately, the #25 BMW M6, with Dirk Werner in control, passed Earl Bamber’s Porsche 911 RSR to clinch 2nd position, with the

Porsche 911 RSR #912 taking 3rd. In GTD class there was also a great race, which included the Lamborghini Huracan, Ferrari, Audi R8 LMS and Porsche 911 GT3R. The Alex Job entry, with Mario Farnbacher, James and Riberas, unfortunately did not make the podium, finishing in 4th place. The WeatherTech Porsche of Alex Job Racing, with drivers McNeil, Keen and Jeannette, took 5th. Scuderia Corsa #63 Ferrari took the win, with the Turner Motorsport BMW 2nd,

and the Magnus Racing R8 LMS 3rd. The Drivers’ points standings have the Bamber, Christensen, Makowiecki Porsche in 2nd place, with 62 points—1st place has 72 points. Estre, Pilet and Tandy are in 9th, with 46 points. Every day can’t be your day in racing. Still, much is learned in the course of a race. Michael Shank, of Michael Shank Racing, told me that their crash during

Thursday night’s practice session cost about $200,000 to repair. Despite the rushed and extensive repairs, they qualified on the pole. It was a great effort by their team. Notwithstanding the typically great effort by the Porsche team, the result was not what they had desired. It was a hard-earned 3rd place finish. Now that the new season has begun, I will eagerly watch Porsche’s progress until the drama ends.

The 2016 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance was as exciting an event as ever. Although it is not a predominantly Porsche event, each year Porsche has a significant presence. And in recent years, there have been many CVR connections to the event, including the multitude of CVR members who have attended the weekend.

Some Highlights for 2016:

I spent Thursday morning in the Gooding preview tent looking at all the cars, including the 16 of Seinfeld.

During my visit, CVR Historian and Porsche Market maven, Prescott Kelly, reviewed the Porsches at Gooding, which included many of the Seinfeld cars. Of particular interest was Seinfeld’s 1958 Carrera GS/GT Speedster. Prescott,

joined by 356 expert Vic Skirmants, performed a comprehensive inspection of the Speedster. During the inspection, noted 356 expert and collector, Weldon Scrogham, joined in. All day Friday the Gooding auction tent was filled to capacity, especially during sales of the Seinfeld cars, which started coming on stage around 1:00 p.m. Crowds were also outside, able to listen through speakers and watch on video screens. David Gooding introduced Seinfeld before starting the auction. Bidding was very active on most cars, with many selling at the high end or over the high estimate. The Seinfeld sale

realized over $22 million, achieving less than the estimated total high value. The 2000 Carrera GT prototype was the only car left unsold. While previewing the cars at Gooding & Co., I asked one of their specialists to walk me through the process of how a car gets into a Gooding auction. Typically, a car owner will contact Gooding when interested in selling, and then if requested provide photos and details to a Gooding specialist for review. If there is interest from Gooding, a specialist will further review the auto with the owner. Gooding specialists also visit many

The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider sold for $17,160,000, setting the single lot record for a car in the history of all Amelia Island auctions, as well as for a Gooding & Company auction overall. Highest Seinfeld Collection results included the 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder which sold for $5,335,000; the 1959 Porsche 718 RSK that sold for $2,860,000; and the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR that sold for a very strong $2,310,000.

events, looking for prospects and meeting owners. Once Gooding decides on an auto they want to include in a future auction, a specialist will visit the owner and inspect the auto and its documentation. This is followed by determination of an estimated value, when the owner and Gooding agree upon the auto’s auction estimate—the range from low to high. If there is agreement between the owner and Gooding, the

formal—contractual— process takes place, with the end result placement of the auto in a future auction. For the auction catalogue, Gooding arranges a professional photo shoot and engages the services of a professional writer to develop a written description of the auto. Interestingly, Gooding maintains a policy in which autos with values under $250,000 are auctioned “without reserve.” Reserve

is the minimum amount acceptable to the seller to allow a sale. Experience has shown that cars sold “without reserve” frequently stimulate more bidder activity. The obvious downside is that a car sold with no reserve could sell for less than the owner would like. Thus, agreement on value between an owner and Gooding is critical. The CVR connection at the Gooding auction was the inclusion of a 1970 911 ST, previously owned by CVR member and Club Racer, Roy Walzer, and restored by Jim Newton’s Automobile Associates. This car is one of only seven Works 911 STs built in 1970 for official rally use. It was comprehensively

documented by Porsche Historian Jürgen Barth, and was used by Porsche as both a racing and support car until 1971. During Concours Day, the CVR connection continued, with a Best in Class Award (Sports and GT Cars 1955-1959) going to CVR members Roger Williams and Teresa Hoffman, for their stunning, all original, 1956 Austin Healy 100M. The car has all of the original documentation, manuals and tools. This year, the early 356 classes were of Rare Open and Closed cars. The Open Class winner was a 1953 356 Bent Window Cabriolet, from the Ingram Collection.

Ferdinand Porsche and Erwin Komenda designed the Gmünd Coupé in just three months working out of an old lumber mill in Gmund, Austria. The first Coupe was finished in June of 1948 and by mid-1949 approximately 40 had been completed. The Gmünd coupes featured a hand-beaten aluminum body whos general layout would shape every Porsche that followed thereafter. We will once again be hosting a special display of Porsches, with this year’s focal point on Porsche’s GT cars. With the Le Mans winning 911 GT1 reaching its 20th birthday, we wanted to celebrate the great numerical GT variants Porsche has produced through the years. Our goal is to showcase a diverse array of GT Porsches, ranging from early 356 GTs, to the GT1, Carrera GT, GT2, GT3, and GT4. Road and race cars are welcome for this display, as these cars’ origins are closely tied to the race track. This will be a rare opportunity to see all of these GT Porsches together, in one setting. If you own one of these remarkable cars and would like to participate in the special display, please register in advance. You’ll not only be included in the GT exhibit, but you will also receive a special award and goodie bag.

The Concours will retain many elements from previous years, including: 12 or more Porsche classes for the event. Based on pre-registrations, we will divide the expected Porsches into the most appropriate competitive classes as possible. The “My Other Car” group which is open to any non-Porsche. This group has grown tremendously in popularity since its introduction in 2011, and we look forward to seeing what our attendees bring this year!

The “Patina Award” winner, who will be selected by the Concours chairs. This special award will recognize the car (or tractor) that best displays the wear and tear of aging and regular use, track time, or restorations in progress.

itself as one of the most raucous 911s ever produced. Since

its introduction in 1995, various iterations of the GT2 have

traveled the Zuffenhausen production line over the past two

excitement has remained the same: rear wheel drive, paired

with twin turbocharging and high horsepower.

Beginning with the non-U.S. market 993 GT2, to the 996 GT2, and ending with the 997 GT2 and GT2 RS, you can’t possibly go wrong with any of the choices. Designed to compete in Gran Turismo, GT-class racing— for closed cars only—the 993 GT2 followed in the footsteps of the successful 964 Carrera RSR and 964 Turbo S Le Mans GT. The RSR was propelled by a 3.8-liter engine, which

produced a conservative 325 horsepower. It sold for approximately $160,500 in 1993 and 1994, and featured center lock wheels, along with built-in pneumatic jack stands. The 964 RSR earned several overall and class wins during the 1993 and 1994 seasons, and a class victory at Le Mans, in 1993. The highly scarce Turbo S Le Mans GT was built for long distance GT races. It achieved an impressive

474 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged, 3.2-liter racing engine. The car was a handful to drive, yet it generated some notable wins, such as a class win at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1993, along with a finish of second, overall, at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1994. Worth mentioning is the Le Mans GT’s introduction of air inlets on the outer edges of its rear wing, which has become an iconic styling element of all 911 GT2s.

Ready for battle in 1995, the 993 GT2—based on the 993 Turbo road cars— incorporated the engineering findings and successes of its predecessors. In order to compete in the BPR race series, in which the previously mentioned cars competed, Porsche was required to build at least 25 cars in each year they

sought to compete. Two variants of the 993 GT2 were ultimately created, a Strasse (street) car and a Club Sport racing car. Club Sports had thin windows, an unfinished interior, aluminum doors and an aluminum hood. These weight-saving measures, in part, allowed the car to tip the scales at just 2,447

pounds. The street version weighed-in at less than 2,900 pounds, with a sparsely clad interior— but including radio and A/C—along with special lightweight, magnesium, center spoke wheels. A sunroof was not available, nor were rear seats, which helped the GT2 remain substantially lighter than a

Sport cars produced 480 horsepower. Pricing for the two models was very high. A base-specification Club Sport cost approximately $180,000, but if fitted with the many available racing upgrades, cars could approach the quarter-of-amillion dollar mark. The street version of the 1995 993 GT2 was equally cost prohibitive, carrying a base price just shy of $200,000. In comparison, a 2017 991 Turbo S Cabriolet is priced at $200,400, before options and delivery. Therefore, it’s easy to understand why only 194 993 GT2s were ever produced (production numbers provided with thanks for Prescott Kelly’s research). It is believed that

157 street versions and 37 Club Sport versions were built. Most 993 GT2s that I have encountered are documented as model year 1996; a select few are model year 1998. Despite the limited number of 993 GT2s, they accomplished a very admirable racing history. In a first full season in 1996, GT2s were victorious in the GT2 racing class seven of eleven times. They also went on to take class victories in the 1996 and 1997 24 Hours at Le Mans. Please note that some of the Club Sport GT2s were converted to “Evolution” specification and raced in the GT1 class. These cars were fitted with lighter-weight body paneling, wider tires, and larger

turbochargers, which produced significantly more horsepower (600+). Although very competitive, the GT2 Evo spec cars were quickly pushed aside by the then, newly developed 911 GT1. Given the 993 GT2’s cult following and success which it generated in the racing world, it comes as no surprise that Porsche paid homage to it with a road-going successor in 2002, the 996 GT2. Available at an equally staggering base price to the 993 GT2, fortunate buyers could procure a no-option example for a little over $185,000. This was nearly $70,000 more than the base price of a 2002 996 Turbo! What made the 996 GT2 unique was how it blended

the 996 Turbo and the European market 2000-2001 996 GT3, yet created its own identity. The car utilized several chassis and suspension components from the early GT3s—in a modified form to best suit the GT2—along with a derivative of the GT3’s transmission. The GT2 shared many aerodynamic and thermodynamic features with the 996 Turbo, enhanced to ensure maximum downforce and cooling. This car was capable of 196 miles per hour. The 996 GT2 was Porsche’s first-ever model to come fitted with lightweight Ceramic Composite brakes. (Years before, McLaren attempted offering such technology on their F1

supercar, but was forced to remove them prior to production, due to numerous performance issues). The GT2 revised the engine from its Turbo brother. It was fitted with larger turbochargers, allowing the car to reach 462 horsepower at 5,700 rpm. Torque was equally heroic at 457 lb-ft, achievable at 3,500 rpm. Typically Porsche,

horsepower and torque for the 2004 and 2005 model year GT2s were raised to 483 and 501, respectively. Production was very limited for the 996 GT2, an estimated 1,287 examples built worldwide, with approximately 317 of them for the U.S. market. Less than 30 2004 and 2005 variants,

combined, came to the U.S., making them highlyprized among collectors. Although very few 996 GT2s were produced, Porsche couldn’t disappoint its VIP customer base by ending GT2 series production. Therefore, in 2008, a worthy 997 variant was introduced, bearing the venerable GT2 name. These cars added Stability Control and Traction Control, two features the 996 version lacked, which likely helped earn it the nickname, “The Widowmaker.” However, both features could be disabled on the 997 GT2, 72

thereby allowing the car’s pilot full control, if so dared. Full control was vital, as the 997 GT2 generated 530 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, with 501 lb-ft of torque at a mere 2,200 rpm. A cool feature of these cars—and something that was useful for harnessing all of this power off the line—was launch control. This was especially unique for a manual transmission car and a first for Porsche. Most may think of the PDK automatic Porsches as being the first to offer launch control, but it was actually available a year earlier, on the GT2.

There were no GT2s for the 2010 model year, but a big change was lurking right around the corner. In 2011, Porsche offered the very limited-production GT2 RS variant—a 620 horsepower, steroid-induced maniac. The GT2 RS came fitted with extensive matte carbon fiber exterior trim, including the hood, side mirrors, rear fender air inlets, and numerous aerodynamic components. In addition, one could opt for bodypainted carbon fiber front fenders, which gave the car front fender extensions an integrated, rather than applied, look. As you can imagine, none of this came cheaply, contributing to a base price of $245,950. This, in comparison to the 2008 GT2’s base price of $191,700, was a significant jump in cost. Sales were an estimated 205 997 GT2s and 133 997

Harraseeket Inn, Freeport Maine September 16-18, 2016

This year the fall tour will be based in Freeport, Maine, at the Harraseeket Inn. This is a short, two block walk to LL Bean’s flagship store. The 911 2.5 S was a works-modified version of the standard 911 2.4 S Coupé designed for use on racing circuits such as the Targa Florio or Le Mans as well as in rally racing, costing an extra 19,000 Marks (approx. $12,000 in 1972 US Dollars), and modified strictly in accordance with the international sporting regulations. Ordered from the sports division of Porsche by the US racing driver Michael “Mike” Keyser in November 1971, the 911 2.5 S/T saw action at several races in the USA and at the endurance world

championship during the 1972 season. One of the drivers back then was Jürgen Barth, a Porsche factory driver and an employee of the sports division of Porsche. The overall winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours race in 1977 can still vividly remember those days even now, 44 years later: “Mike Keyser had invited me to Sebring and we planned to drive the full 1972 endurance championship. Mike had even hired a small TV team to accompany us through the season.” In the 1972 season, Jürgen Barth and the 911

2.5 S/T raced in the Daytona 6 Hours and the Sebring 12 Hours in Florida, followed by the Targa Florio as well as the 1000-km race on the Nürburgring together with Mike Keyser. Together with Sylvain Garant from Switzerland, Keyser and Barth finally took up the gauntlet of the season’s highlight – the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Not only did the trio, under the banner of the team Louis Mezanarie, take the class victory for GT cars up to 3 litres, but also clinched a formidable 13th place overall. All these years later, the restoration is posing a real

challenge for the Porsche Classic experts – especially when it comes to the bodywork. As soon as the car had arrived at the workshop the experts discovered that not only had the 911 been converted to what was later dubbed the 'G-model', but it had also suffered accident damage, which had been bent back into shape unprofessionally. In addition to deformation in the tunnel as well as on the side rails, corrosion had done serious damage, in particular in the wheel housing panels, the tunnel and the roof. The roof, which had been deformed beyond

repair, suggested that children had used the car as a welcome playmate for a considerable length of time, making the repairs to the bodywork particularly complex, which included the challenging conversion and reconstruction of the flared wing extensions, partly done by hand. The 911 2.5 S/T was given a new roof as well as new tank bottom. After the extensive metalwork had been completed, the body of the 911 2.5 S/T was coated by cathodic dip painting (CDP) to protect it long-term against corrosion according to the highest technological May 2016

standards of series production. This was done by putting the restored body through the current series production process at Porsche to give it perfect protection against corrosion. This was then followed by body finishing and painting in the original light yellow colour, code 117. Motor racing, in particular the Le Mans 24 Hours race, is of great significance to Porsche. Over

800 Porsche vehicles have taken part since the first race took place in 1951, with 103 of them taking a class victory and 17 overall victories at the circuit on the river Sarthe, Porsche is the most successful brand there by far. After winning last year, Porsche is all set to take part in the 84th Le Mans 24 Hours race on June 18 and 19 this year. Traditionally for Porsche, a race like the 24 Hours of

Le Mans is not only about competing at the highest level. Rather, the race track is more of a testing ground for new technologies. The development of successful race cars like the 919 Hybrid and the 911 RSR as well as being put to the test under tough racing conditions offer critical insights that can be incorporated in to the design of future generations of production models. This type of technology transfer from

race car to standard vehicle as the driving force behind Porsche’s motorsport involvement was already in Ferry Porsche’s mind when he said: “Technical progress is unthinkable without sport. It is the vector for development. The extreme demands we face on the race track very quickly highlight any weak points and encourage our engineers to look for new and better solutions.” Seen in this light, the 911 2.5 S/T restored by Porsche Classic down to the last detail can be see from a historical point of view, too. It was the direct predecessor and the immediate technical precursor for the 911
