MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
Dear Members,
As we enter 2023, our industry must contend with an aggressive set of emissions reductions targets ahead. Hitting these targets and building a new Canadian zero-emission mobility architecture requires we build on what we’ve achieved in the past and elevate what we do well in the future.
Our valued Members — both our founding members and our newer members — have helped us to ensure the Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) stays committed and unwavering in its pursuit of zero-emissions smart-enabled transit technologies. As a community, we believe these technologies will help to improve the quality of life for all Canadians.
CUTRIC is built on the need to seek solutions, test them, and determine what is and isn’t working. Only through the power of experimentation will we ensure that Canada’s incredibly innovative eco-economy rises to the global challenge of climate action in real-time.

In 2022, CUTRIC completed the first full year of head-to-head battery electric bus and high-powered charging systems comparisons in performance and performance gaps across and between assets owned by Coast Mountain Bus Company/Translink, York Region Transit and Brampton Transit, respectively. This is a first in Canada and a first in North America. It’s helped to establish the foundation for CUTRIC’s non-profit CloudTransit™ empirical analytics toolkit for electric and fuel cell bus performance analysis and it serves as the foundation for the Ontario Public Transit Agency’s (OPTA’s) Zero Emissions Bus Dashboard that CUTRIC is building this year. We have also seen several new players come to the table in support of producing green hydrogen for MiWay (the public transit agency in Mississauga) at higher volumes to support transit decarbonization, including the growth of a new carbon-offset and carbon credit mechanisms being proposed to CUTRIC’s transit members to help reduce pollution associated with gray hydrogen and render it as clean as electrolytic hydrogen from well-to-wheel from a full lifecycle analytics
As we enter our eighth year, I am proud to relay that our consortium has grown by 21 institutional members over the past 12 months across Canada’s public transit, public utility, private industry, government, not-for-profit, and academic ecosystem allied to zero and low-carbon smart mobility. This brings the total number of our Member organizations to more than 140
In the pursuit of the next frontier, we proudly launched our Smart Rail Innovation Program, expanding our areas of technological expertise into low-carbon smart rail mobility for passenger services. It’s undeniable that rail will help to save our climate. This program seeks to flesh out the big opportunities ahead in hydrogen rail modeling and deployment, battery electric bus integration with rail station charging, and autonomous

This year we operated our first full year as the Government of Canada’s national planning service for zero-emission transit. Our ZEB Consulting Services team now offers non-profit, auditable and comparative feasibility and implementation studies to more than a dozen public transit agencies within this program. Some of these systems include The City of Moncton and Codiac Transpo, The City of St. Johns and Metro Bus, The City of Brampton and Brampton Transit, The Town of Okotoks and Okotoks Transit, and The Town of Cochrane. What we have learned in the process is helping us expand our services to private fleet operators, public utility fleet operators, school buses, and waste management feets.
To further support the federal government’s goal of deploying 5,000 zero-emission buses (ZEBs) by 2026, we also launched Canada’s first national public transit joint procurement initiative known as the CUTRIC Zero Emission Bus (CUTZEB) Joint Procurement Initiative . Fully incorporated, CUTZEB is now a completely independent non-profit spin off of CUTRIC with its own clients (London Transit and Burlington Transit) and its own Board of Directors (composed of representatives from Edmonton Transit, TransLink, Grand River Transit and the City of Guelph). This is the only procurement in Canada that seeks to procure electric buses and chargers (high- and low-powered) as part of a turn-key solution for multiple transit agencies at once.

To bring all this technology innovation to the public sphere, CUTRIC also hosted two successful conferences – a fully digital 2nd Annual ZEB Conference (March 2022) and an in-person merged event with our 4th annual Low Smart Carbon Mobility Conference and our 3rd Annual Technologies Conference – held with the specific themes of “A shared route to a net-zero future” and “On-track to a net-zero future,” respectively.
We also conversed with the public about these projects, planning efforts and zero-carbon smart mobility solutions through direct-to-reader news media stories, including stories in The Hill Times The Globe & Mail, The Canadian Press, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

À l’aube de 2023, notre secteur doit faire face à un ensemble d’objectifs ambitieux de réduction des émissions. Pour atteindre ces cibles et mettre en place une nouvelle architecture de mobilité à zéro émission au Canada, nous nous appuyons sur ce que nous avons réalisé dans le passé et sur l’amélioration de ce que nous faisons bien à l’avenir.
Nos précieux membres – tant les membres fondateurs que les nouveaux membres – nous ont aidés à faire en sorte que le Consortium de recherche et d’innovation en transport urbain au Canada (CRITUC) demeure résolument déterminé dans sa quête de technologies de transport intelligent à zéro émission. En 2022, le CRITUC a terminé la première année complète de comparaisons face-à-face d’autobus électriques à batterie et de systèmes de recharge à haute puissance en matière de rendement et d’écarts de rendement dans l’ensemble des actifs appartenant à TransLink, à York Region Transit et à Brampton Transit, respectivement, et entre ceux-ci. En route vers la prochaine étape, nous avons fièrement lancé notre programme Innovation ferroviaire intelligente, qui étend nos domaines d’expertise technologique à la mobilité ferroviaire intelligente à faible émission de carbone pour les services aux passagers. Il est indéniable que le rail contribuera à sauver notre climat. Ce programme vise à étoffer les grandes perspectives à venir en matière de modélisation et de déploiement des trains à hydrogène, d’intégration des autobus électriques à batterie avec chargement dans les gares et de technologies ferroviaires autonomes.
Pour la première fois, nous avons achevé une année entière en tant que service de planification nationale du gouvernement du Canada dans le secteur du transport à zéro émission. Notre équipe de recherche et de services-conseils ZEB propose désormais des études de faisabilité et de mise en œuvre sans but lucratif, vérifiables et comparatives, à plus d’une douzaine d’agences de transport en commun dans le cadre de ce programme. Certains de ces réseaux comprennent la Ville de Moncton et Codiac Transpo, la Ville de St. Johns et Metro Bus, la Ville de Brampton et Brampton Transit, la Ville d’Okotoks et Okotoks Transit, ainsi que la Ville de Cochrane. Entièrement constituée en société, la CUTZEB est maintenant un organisme sans but lucratif complètement indépendant du CRITUC, avec ses propres clients (London Transit et Burlington Transit) et son propre conseil d’administration (composé de représentants d’Edmonton Transit, de TransLink, de Grand River Transit et de la Ville de Guelph). Il s’agit du seul marché public au Canada qui vise à acquérir des autobus électriques et des chargeurs (à haute et à basse puissance) dans le cadre d’une solution clé en main pour plusieurs agences de transport en commun à la fois.

Afin d’amener toutes ces innovations technologiques dans la sphère publique, le CRITUC a également organisé deux conférences réussies : une deuxième conférence annuelle entièrement numérique sur les technologies et l’exploitation du transport en commun en autobus à zéro émission (mars 2022), et un événement en personne fusionné avec notre quatrième conférence annuelle sur la mobilité intelligente à faible émission de carbone et notre troisième conférence annuelle sur les technologies ferroviaires intelligentes, tenues sous les thèmes particuliers d’« Une voie partagée vers un avenir sans émission » et « Sur la bonne voie vers un avenir sans émission », respectivement.
Nous avons également amorcé un échange avec le public sur ces projets, les efforts de planification et les solutions de mobilité intelligente à zéro émission par l’entremise d’articles publiés directement dans les médias, notamment dans The Hill Times, The Globe & Mail, La Presse Canadienne et la Société Radio-Canada, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns.

The Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) supports projects that develop the next generation of mobility and transportation technologies for Canadians. These advancements help grow the low-carbon and smart technology ecosystem in the country, leading to job growth and economic development over the long term.
CUTRIC’s work generates solutions that decrease fuel consumption, reduce emissions, eliminate redundancies, reduce congestion, improve the quality of life for Canadians, advance the digital integration of low-cost mobility solutions for communities across Canada, increase road safety and reduce road accidents. The Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC) is a socially responsible non-profit organization that spearheads, designs, and launches technology and commercialization projects that advance next-generation zero-carbon mobility and transportation solutions across Canada.

What We Do
MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
The Canadian government is encouraging transit agencies across the country to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve fleet decarbonization. As a result, the projects, commitments, and affiliations related to zero-emission buses (ZEB) have been catching the eye of the public and other interested parties. At CUTRIC, we offer ZEB consulting services that are backed by experienced and knowledgeable subject-matter experts to help transit agencies align their operations with decarbonization and fleet electrification goals.
The path to zero-emission transportation does not need to be complex. Our ZEB consulting services and tools include a feasibility assessment, modelling, deployment strategies and post-deployment assessments. We analyze, educate, counsel, and assist clients in creating a strategy that aligns with goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve the goals for decarbonization set by the Canadian government.
Our Zero Emissions Bus (ZEB) Consulting Services™ help transit agencies, utilities and other allied organizations reach their decarbonization and electrification goals scientifically and neutrally.
We offer a full suite of services to support clients throughout the process of decarbonization — from technology feasibility assessment to full-fleet ZEB implementation — all while considering current assets and identified needs. Our team uses a client-focused service delivery model, and the toolsets we offer are highly customizable to suit individual needs and specifications.

FMEA: The Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a systematic technique to assess a system, item or portfolio for all potential failure modes and associated effects. To calculate the Risk Priority Number (RPN), this technique uses the probability of the failure, the severity of its effect and the effectiveness of the current control measures to detect the failure before its release to the end-user. The risk management plan is designed based on the RPN rankings from highest to lowest. Depending on the purpose, FMEA can be customized as design FMEA, process FMEA, functional FMEA and system FMEA.
