Bonjour dear AF friends,

L’Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad est plus que jamais auprès de vous pendant cette période difficile. Mais c’est aussi l’occasion de célébrer l’amitié entre la France et l’Inde. Dimanche 2 mai au matin, un avion français s’est posé dans la capitale indienne avec 28 tonnes d’équipement médical, dont huit générateurs d’oxygène de grande capacité, pouvant chacun alimenter en continu un hôpital indien de 250 lits, selon les autorités françaises.

"L’Inde nous a aidés l’année dernière dans les hôpitaux français, quand les besoins en médicaments étaient énormes. Le peuple français s’en souvient", a déclaré dimanche Emmanuel Lenain, l’ambassadeur de France en Inde.

The Alliance Française of Ahmedabad is with you more than ever during this difficult period. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the friendship between France and India. On Sunday morning, May 2, a French plane landed in the Indian capital with 28 tons of medical equipment, including eight large-capacity oxygen generators, each capable of continuously supplying an Indian hospital with 250 beds, according to the French authorities.

"India helped us last year in French hospitals, when the need for drugs was enormous. The French people remember it," said on Sunday Emmanuel Lenain, the French ambassador to India.

But also, thinking about the future can help us overcome these difficult times. France is reopening its doors and it is high time to prepare for your future and the life after by going to study in France. Studies are now open and possible. You can now learn French to prepare for the start of the September 2021 school year. Our courses are open for registration for opening classes and classes in progress by contacting Manali in Ahmedabad and Hiranmayee in Vadodara. At the same time contact Sujit from Campusfrance in order to prepare your project of studies.

Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad was founded in 1981 and was established in a premise near Gujarat College in 1982. Began by some of the most prominent personalities of Ahmedabad, the idea was always to spread French culture, language and art in the city. It has indeed been a beautiful journey so far. Alliance Francaise de Baroda as an annexe of Ahmedabad was opened in 2003.

The main pillar of our teaching remains our pedagogy. The French courses are divided in 6 levels as per the common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Supporting these levels are our workshops that help students improve and finish their language. And lastly, a rigorous cultural calendar with almost 100 events every year providing a creative environment for the language to grow as a culture.

Now in One year you can master three levels of French with Alliance Française and in almost 1 and a half year get your international diploma!

Buddhadeva's 'Calcutta’ - Niranjan

I am grateful to the Sahitya Akademi for inviting me to participate in a seminar organized to celebrate the birth-centenary of Buddhadeva Bose, the most eminent poet- of the 20th century Bengal (of course Tagore excepted) and the father of modernism in Bengali poetry.

I crave your indulgence for a while and pray you permit me to begin with a brief personal note. In the late '40s when I was an undergraduate student in Bombay, I was introduced to Baudelaire by an elderly poet-friend who was himself a lover of Baudelaire's poetry and had also written a poem on him. I had read Baudelaire in MacIntyre’s excellent translation of Baudelaire’s poetry in English entitled 'One Hundred Poems’ from ‘Les Fleurs du Mal'. It was my first encounter with modern poetry in any language.

In the years that followed I was writing my poems on Bombay in Gujarati, which I collected (a group of 16 poems) under the title ‘Pravaldweep’ (Coral Island) and published in 1956. Baudelaire, along with Eliot and Rilke, was a major inspiration. In 1966 Buddhadeva published his exquisite translation of 112 poems from Baudelaire’s ‘Les Fleurs du Mal' in Bengali entitled ‘Charles Baudelaire O Tar Kavita' with a brilliant preface.

In 1941, when Tagore died, I was deeply moved by his death. Immediately, I taught myself Bengali to be able to read him in his magnificent original Bengali and have been reading him till date. Hence, I could read Buddhadeva’s translation. At once, I could see that there was affinity between him and Baudelaire, since I had read a few of his poems including ‘Calcutta’ in Bengali. At once, Baudelaire's poem on Paris entitled ‘Epilogue’ and its sequel ‘Ebauche d'un Epilogue' came to my mind. It is against this backdrop that I have chosen to speak, here this morning, on Buddhadeva’s ‘Calcutta’ and Baudelaire’s ‘Paris.’

I think it is a proper tribute to a poet who conceived his brainchild, 'Department of Comparative Literature’ at Jadavpur University in 1956 and nursed it with loving care and concern for 7 long years till 1963.

No city, no modernity. Modernity is synonymous with urbanity. Buddhadeva was not born in the city, he was born in the country, in Comilla in East-Bengal in 1908. He spent his early childhood in Noakhali till 1922 and his youth in Dhaka from 1922 onwards, where he received his formal education -M.A. with English. It was only when he was 23 that he came to Calcutta in 1931. Thereafter, he lived all his life there till he died in 1974, at the age of 66. Baudelaire was born in Paris in 1821 and lived all his life there till he died in 1867 at the age of 46. Thus, Buddhadeva was not city-born but was city-bred. Baudelaire was both city born, and city bred. Buddhadeva inherited Tagore’s Calcutta but he invented Calcutta as a modern city in his poetry. Baudelaire inherited Hugo’s Paris, but he invented Paris as a modern metropolis in his poetry; like Haussmann, during Baudelaire's lifetime, reconstructed Paris and transformed it into the first modern city in the world, a model for all other cities the world over. Truly, Baudelaire was the father of modernism in French poetry, so was Buddhadeva in Bengali poetry - the father of modernism.

For Buddhadeva, Calcutta was a dream city, a city which presided over his destiny. It was a battleground where he fought out many a battle - private and public, in life and literature; many he won; a few he lost, a city which was a witness to his triumphs and his tragedies, to his delights and his despairs, a city where he found the fullest flowering of his poetry and his personality. So was Paris for Baudelaire.

Each loved his city with the love of a passionate lover for his jealous mistress, loved its places and people, its majestic monuments, and its humble humanity. Each talked of going away from his city, ‘anywhere out of the world’ but none went away. One cannot think of Baudelaire apart from Paris, so also of Buddhadeva apart from Calcutta. Though their personal and private lives divided them, their devotion and dedication to their task united them. Each affirmed and asserted the supremacy of Art over Nature, of Aesthetics over Ethics, of Poetry over Propaganda. As artists, both possessed and preserved their unique identity and their unmistakable integrity.

Buddhadeva wrote ‘Calcutta' in 1953, 22 years after he arrived in Calcutta in 1931. He wrote it not in Calcutta but in Mysore, where he was working for a UNESCO project for a while. It was published in his collection 'Sheeter Prarthana: Basanter Uttar' in 1955. He made his first visit to Calcutta in 1924, as yet a student, followed by a few more during vacations. In his autobiographical account of his youth ‘Amar Jauban', written at the very end of his life in 1973 and posthumously published in 1975, he has written about his early experiences of Calcutta. He found Calcutta to be ‘a magnet’, ‘a marvellous city’. The experience was like ‘a sexual adventure’ with all its excitements and enchantments. He elaborates this experience of Calcutta’s initial impact: 'Calcutta’s dominant-colour was the grey of its asphalt, its main sound the roaring of its traffic, here the speed was intense, there were many conflicts, the restlessness was constant... A huge, open university - such was Calcutta for me, for the first two or three years after my arrival here.’

'Calcutta’ is a poem of 33 terza rima stanzas, totally 99 lines. It is too long for me to read it in full in a short span of time at my disposal. I will have to do with a few phrases and lines as well as a few stanzas in which one finds significant images and ideas, events, and emotions. I shall quote them from Ketaki Dyson's English translation of Calcutta in her ‘Selected Poems of Buddhadeva Bose.’

Buddhadeva has created a composite and complete image of Calcutta as a modern city with many images one frequently finds throughout the poem - ‘hot metallic breath’, ‘midday asphalt scent', 'motley crowds in the streets’, ‘railway platform',' white terraced roofs',' taxi’s pulsing speed', ‘stones on your pavements’, ‘tram-lines', 'ceaseless groan of lorries.’

The first half of the poem is devoted to the sweet and sad memories of the past and to the meaning Calcutta had for the poet.

Calcutta, he says, with a profound sense of gratitude and a deep feeling of adoration, has bestowed many gifts on him - the most precious being the freedom to be one’s own self. The second half is devoted to the forebodings about the future, both his own and that of Calcutta - that ‘Perhaps I'll have to say good-bye to you one day’ but not without saying ‘Shine bright, not just in my eyes, but in the eyes of the world’ and wishes to hear some day before his death, ‘that you (Calcutta) did not play deceptive tricks on the hungry, did not mock beauty, did not force your talented ones into exile.’

The middle of the poem is devoted to the terrible tragedies of deaths and destructions, he and Calcutta saw and suffered from, during the entire decade of the '40s - World War II, impending Japanese invasion, blackouts, famine, panic, turmoil, epidemics, anarchy, refugees, riots, partition and what not. It adds a dimension of universality and objectivity as to the poem without which the poem would have been a private and personal confession, a poet’s testament. One feels the rush of rhythm when one read the poem, which matches with the dynamic rhythm of the city itself. One sees Calcutta through the poet’s eye ‘in a fine frenzy rolling.’ The poem is written in a state of ecstasy and agony. It is a sublime ode to Calcutta, a summing up of Buddhadeva's Calcutta experience. The poem reaches its climax when the poet proclaims, ‘my Ujjaiyini, my America, Calcutta.’ For Buddhadeva Ujjaiyini is not far away in time as it was for Tagore, nor is America far away in space. They are here and now in Calcutta.

Buddhadeva’s Calcutta is not one city, but all cities - ancient, modern, and those to come.

Now let us listen to the poet: 'I had come to you as a guest, with the shyness of virginity, / but you, heroine of a hundred thousand lovers broke the ice/ and flung yourself on me.’

‘I have drunk you with my in-breath, I have touched your pores, / spread myself all over you, as a mountain stream when it first falls on the plain.’

'No one can say to you - ' You are mine.’ For you, enchantress [,] are the daughter of commerce, to be shared by all the world. But I found my liberation, did I not, when to the ears of your breezes I could say, 'I am yours.’

‘From your hand I grabbed my destiny and grasped it in my fist free from all doubts.’ ‘.... you endowed me/ as grandly as a queen - in every layer of my being I have absorbed your munificence.’

‘Because you don't soothe like a mother, but like a charmer to be won over, / because you invite magnanimously, reject-cruelly, reciprocate lavishly, / therefore have I loved you -infinitely mysterious, sexy Calcutta.'

‘You have given meaning to my existence - my Ujjaiyini, my America – Calcutta!’

Baudelaire wrote 'Epilogue' and 'Ebauche d'un Epilogue’ (Draft of an Epilogue) in 1980. They together make one poem and could be conveniently and comfortably called Baudelaire’s poem on Paris, since they are addressed to Paris. He intended to include them in the second edition of ‘Les fleurs du Mal’ in 1861, since they are a summing up of all the 127 poems in it. ‘Epilogue' is the versified amplification of the first 2 lines of the Draft Epilogue.

Baudelaire wanted to develop the draft of Epilogue in terza rima since ' Epilogue ' was in that metrical form. Thus, the poems were unfinished. Hence, they were not included in the second edition of ‘Les fleur du Mal’ in 1861. Baudelaire died in 1867. 'Epilogue' was included in ‘Petits Poemes en Prose', since it was incorrectly thought to be an epilogue to it and the Draft Epilogue in Volume IV of 'Oeuvres Completes’, both posthumously published in 1869. ‘Epilogue’ is a poem of 5 terza rima stanzas, totally 15 lines, and Draft Epilogue in 31 lines. I shall read the most significant lines from each poem.

‘Epilogue' begins with a bird's eye-view, a panoramic view of Paris. Baudelaire climbs the hill up to Montmartre so that he can contemplate about Paris in its totality. He names the places which make his Paris, which he has frequented as a flaneur. Thus, Tout Paris lies at his feet. He says he has come here like an old lecher to his old mistress, namely Paris, to intoxicate himself by the sight of that enormous bawd, again namely Paris, and to restore his youth with her infernal charms. He pictures Paris as he saw her in the mornings and in the evenings during his life-long flânerie. The poem ends with ‘I love you, O infamous city, whose harlots and bandits offer pleasures which the profane vulgar cannot understand.’

‘Draft of an Epilogue’ also begins with 'I love you, my beauty, my charmer,’, namely Paris. It is followed by a Whitmanesque catalogue of all things he experienced during his flânerie in Paris and exalted them in his poetry - places and people, pleasures and pains, virtues, and vices. The poem ends with a prayer to Paris to be a witness that he has fulfilled his task like a chemist or like a saint since he has extracted the quintessence from all things.

Paris gave him her mud, he turned it to gold. No wonder he called his poems flowers of evil. These poems are Baudelaire’s sublime ode to Paris, a summum bonum of Baudelaire’s Paris experience.

Now let Baudelaire speak: ‘Epilogue’ ‘It was with a contented heart that I climbed the hill (up to Montmartre) from which one can survey the City in her totality with her hospitals, and brothels, purgatory, inferno, prison houses.’

‘Like an old rake with his old mistress, I wanted to intoxicate myself with the sight of that enormous bawd whose diabolical charms never fail to restore my youth.’

‘I love you, foul metropolis, who with your harlots and apaches have delights to offer which godless, commonplace minds can never understand.’

‘Draft of an Epilogue’ ‘Calm as a sage and docile as one on whom the curse is laid, I said: "I love you, my most beautiful, my charmer!’

'O you, bear witness that I fulfilled my task like a perfect chemist, a saintly soul, / for from all these things I extracted the quintessence. The mud you gave me, I have turned to gold.’

Let me end this paper also with an Epilogue. What did Calcutta mean to Buddhadeva and Paris to Baudelaire? Everything. What did Calcutta give to Buddhadeva and Paris to Baudelaire? Not less than everything. Their poems are a testimony to it.
