Because creative inspiration and bold actions must shape the arc of professional artistic, creative, and scholarly development. Nothing more, nothing less.

As Farouk Dey, higher education expert and CAM guest speaker, says, the question to ask students is not “What do you want to do?” but, “What inspires you?” And of ourselves, “How can we support that?”

Success seldom has a syllabus. And students should not be expected to know the ins and outs of achieving professional success. That’s why we integrate mentoring, informative experiences and networking into our curriculum. It’s especially critical for first generation students, undocumented students, and students of color who are often constrained to the margins.

Jewett’s new film, 180 Degrees conveys why the camera’s point of view in two-person scenes is so essential. But students didn’t watch the film, they produced it. The National Center for Media Forensics (NCMF) was created in partnership with the Department of Justice offering a Master of Science in Media Forensics (MS in MF) degree program.

Media Forensics is the study of scientific methods to collect, analyze, interpret, and present audio, video, and image evidence— ethically and bias-free, using state-of-the-art techniques and technology to fight crime and digital disinformation.

hands-on learning CAM students find out how art works in lots of ways. Meow Wolf hired 16 CAM student interns to bring their newest installation, Convergence Station, to life. Emmanuel Art Gallery, displaying local, national and International artists, is run by CAM students and staff. The free Next Stage Gallery, an interactive space featuring new technologies in art and design, is also student run.

Take a trip down a wormhole Convergence Station, Meow Wolf’s mind-bending installation invites us to enter new, wildly surreal dimensions of possibility. Sixteen CAM interns did just that, bringing 79 transportive experiences to life in the 90,000 sq. ft. installation. As field art directors, creative directors, design and technical directors, students learned to tell immersive stories and create permanent cross-disciplinary art installations. We thank Digital Design Professor Michelle Carpenter for making this credit-earning opportunity happen.

Worth the wait Next Stage’s immersive exhibition, Through the Looking Glass, slows us down for a second look at we’re seeing, hearing, and feeling. There’s no better metaphor for what CAM’s faculty and students went through bringing the exhibition to life.

A pandemic-survivor, the exhibition was relayed from 18 Painting & Drawing students to seven Interdisciplinary Studio students to artist Chris Bagley.

Their 18-month collaborative labor of love finally opened in October.

Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die Redux: Punk Posters and Graphic Design from the Collection of Andrew Krivine Emmanuel Art Gallery’s resonant punk exhibition was collaboratively curated with CAM students, NY-based collector Andrew Krivine, and Dr. Maria Buszek. Krivine, renowned collector of Punk, Post-Punk, and New Wave graphic art, sought our own Dr. Maria Buszek—Denver’s leading authority on punk design and culture and CAM art history professor— to bring the collection to Denver. Dr. Buszek’s mentorship brought home to students how powerful music, art and fashion can be in motivating social justice action.

Let’s talk Cultural Futurism Theo Edmonds is our new Associate Dean for Transdisciplinary Research & Innovation. Don’t be put off by the title. Theo is a cultural futurist who has proven that hope, trust, and belonging can actually be scientifically measured, and thus predicted. When artists and creatives interpret the science and collaborate with business, they help us re-envision what is holding us back as a society. This summer, Theo will be convening the first Future of Creativity Summit, advancing CAM as a global thought leader in creativity.
