CAM Adds Top-Level Faculty Pros ERIC JEWETT

As he began his first semester as a professor, 35-year Hollywood production veteran, Eric Jewett had the idea of developing the College of Arts & Media into a “film-making powerhouse.” After his first semester teaching in the Film & Television department, Eric affirms his vision. “It’s the students that justify my optimism. I have seen strong professional scripts, and acting work that was very moving to all of us in class – deserving of larger venues.”

An award-winning Production Director, Jewett has worked on a long list of films such as Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, Basic Instinct and television series such as Code Black. “In my career, I always wanted to hitch my wagon to talented people,” Jewett notes. “Here at CAM, there is ample opportunity to do just that.”

A pioneer of digital media, Dane Webster, joins the Department of Visual Arts as Associate Professor and the new Director of the Digital Animation Center.

His work and research is nationally recognized for immersing art and design with science and technology.

“I’m often partnering with [professionals] from outside of the arts. (…)Using skills in computer animation, and more recently data visualization, I develop assets (visualization, interactive tools, etc.) for disciplines such as history, science, architecture, and education,” says Webster. “These projects help students learn about the history of Native Americans; help administrators visualize proposals for building projects; help engineers investigate new bio-inspired forms.”

in professional practice, Dane Webster’s recognized expertise will continue to advance our nationally ranked 3D and digital animation program” says Dean Larry Kaptain. “Dane is bringing his passion for creating worlds and building experiments that unfold within the virtual space to advance the learning and creativity of CAM students.”

“I am very much a fan of interdisciplinary collaborations, both in teaching and research,” asserts Dane Webster. “Without question the differentiator for the Digital Animation Center (DAC) is that our capstone experience is so team based. We currently have 27 students working on a new film due this spring. As we work to develop more course offerings, in immersive environments and narrative experiences using VR technologies, and fuse these explorations with the exceptional core at DAC, I think that we will be taking an already amazing program to the next level.”

Music in Africa: CAM’s Global Influence Four students, three faculties and one staff member and alumnus—all representing Music and Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS)—traveled to Uganda for a nine-day creative, humanitarian and educational mission.

The students traveled to East Africa through a partnership with the Denver-based Global Livingston Institute (GLI) and the CU Denver College of Arts & Media to produce the iKNOW Concert Series, one of the largest performance events in the region—creating unity through music, offering Ugandans HIV testing, and raising HIV awareness.

“A life-changing global music experience,” says Christie Chambers, MEIS ’06, and current program coordinator. “We worked with prominent Ugandan hip-hop acts, and established musicians from New Orleans and Nashville, all while partnering with GLI to do

meaningful humanitarian work.”

Founded by Jamie Van Leeuwen, GLI and CAM have a partnership based on educational and social impact, creating an environment where students and East African community leaders discuss innovative solutions to social, health, and educational issues. GLI encourages an immersive experience where students listen and think, before thoughtfully reflecting and acting in ways that can bring about positive change.

The partnership built for the iKNOW concert series is especially strategic. The four students who traveled to Uganda hail from the CAM Music & Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS) program and were faced with this meaningful opportunity: To observe and offer insight as to how a music production enterprise in Uganda could be run by Ugandans, developed and function.

Not only did CAM students studying the music and entertainment industries help produce three international concerts for 44,000 Ugandans and provide HIV testing to 15,500 individuals, they have been given the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the region. By thoughtfully developing the enabling mechanisms for success, the students’ work will create jobs, build skill development, and foster transformational opportunities.

“We used our trained eyes as industry professionals to observe the concert [...], as well as offer advice and improvements along the way.

We were encouraged to go off on our own, both in thought and otherwise, to immerse ourselves in this week-long experience by learning and asking questions,” says Bella Musser, CAM student, and MEIS major.

Collaborating thoughtfully will be the next steps now that the students have returned to campus.

Students say that the real work is just beginning.

They will be using this once-in-a-lifetime experience to enhance the partnership between GLI, CAM, and the iKNOW concert series, while formulating a plan that will empower Ugandans and have lasting impact.

The Creative Economy A new study by the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that between 400 million and 800 million of today’s jobs will be automated by 2030. Creativity, problem solving, empathy and collaboration are skill sets that squarely remain in the province of human beings and the core of a CAM education.

The role of CAM in the emerging Creative Economy and how CAM students can best take part in it, are threads running through each Career Team meeting.

Research To “embed entrepreneurship across CAM” is one of the college leadership’s five strategic initiatives. Every Monday at 1:30p.m., Dean Larry Kaptain gathers his hand-picked team to work creatively on the big career picture for CAM graduates and the right-now opportunities cropping up for internships, entrepreneurial ventures, and research.

The enthusiastic meetings are cross-disciplinary, brainstorming sessions as the team shares their projects,

Entrepreneurship Where did EO (The Entrepreneurs’ Organization) decide to host their annual pitch competition? A school of business or a law school in Colorado? No. The College of Arts & Media was selected. What’s more, a CAM student is one of the top six competitors and CAM’s Angela Buckley is forging an alliance with EO’s Travis Luther to find more mutually beneficial opportunities for EO and CAM students. This past October, Travis Luther received the 2017 University of Colorado Denver’s Alumni Appreciation Award.

One can certainly attest that the Career Team is thinking big, attuned to student success, and keeping CAM’s highly visible role as a national leader in career development and a top choice for students who are pursuing careers in the creative industries.

CAM Outstanding Students At the Fall 2017 CU Denver Commencement 24 talented students graduated from the College of Arts & Media.

Among an exceptional class, three students were recognized specifically.

Each department—Film & Television, Music & Entertainment Industry Studies, and Visual Arts—presented the Outstanding Graduate Award.

Besides a shared creativity as researchers, thinkers, and creators, these three award recipients have a unique common bond—they are each from an immigrant family.

Khoa Nguyen, whose family immigrated from Vietnam and lives in Aurora, received the Outstanding Graduate Award from the Visual Arts Department. Nguyen, an art history major, is the Senior Fashion Columnist for 303 Magazine, writing under the pen name Khoa Sinclair.

Nigel Wickens, whose family immigrated from Panama and lives in California, received the Outstanding Graduate Award from the Film & Television Department. Wickens, a Film & Television major, was a writer, producer, and actor for the web series, Seven Days Straight. The series won several awards at the L.A. Webfest for outstanding writing and editing.

Nikolai Sumcad, who is a firstgeneration student, received the Outstanding Graduate Award from the Music & Entertainment Industry Studies Department. Sumcad, a recording arts major, intends to pursue a career in Los Angeles, working in the film industry. He was a voice talent intern at Go Voices, working with talent in the recording studio.

Department Features Visual Arts - Invitation for Presentation by Visual Arts Senior Adrian Butler On April 7, 2017, Art History and English double-major Adrian Butler presented a paper, “The Deeper Beauty of the Tang Dynasty: A Socio-Political Examination of Zhou Fang’s Ladies Wearing Flowers in their Hair,” at the Chapman Undergraduate Art History Symposium in Orange, California.

This was a rare opportunity for highly motivated students like Adrian to share their research with a broad audience and build their academic credentials for graduate school.

“All in all, it was fascinating and inspiring to see not only a [professor’s] research

but all the creativity of ideas and hard work from undergrads just like me.

Hopefully the connections I made will follow me into my future endeavors,” reflects Adrian.

Since his symposium debut, Adrian obtained a CU Denver UROP Mini Grant to support an independent research project on the influence of Mediterranean mystery cults on early Christian iconography and beliefs. After he graduates in May 2018, Adrian intends to pursue his dual interests in art history of the ancient world and film studies in graduate school.

Music & Entertainment Industry Studies CAM Band Making It Big Did you hear what we heard?

Three bands in the CAM fam were top ten finalists for KTCL Channel 93.3’s Hometown for the Holidays! That meant a lot of airplay for current students and/or alums Chloe Tang, Wildermiss and OptycNerd. And Wildermiss was the big winner who will be opening a major concert in Denver. Stay tuned for exciting things coming from all three acts!

Film & Television Steven Tucker ‘14, Film & Television, is the Post Production Coordinator for HBO’s Emmy Award winning Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He’s worked with live television, documentary television, event production at venues such as Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and live sports broadcasting.

CAM Philanthropy Effort Taking Hold in the Community “Philanthropy is the love of mankind or the love of community,” states Marianna DiVietro, the CAM Director of Development. “The Dean has shaped an unwavering vision for CAM that is taking hold in the community. If someone is going to take a stand, you have to give them a place to stand, and currently we’re asking our community to invest in students and the arts.”

Unlike the University of Colorado medical school, which was established in 1883, CU Denver became an independent entity in 1973 and CAM was created in 1989. As a relatively young college, dependency lingered. It wasn’t until 5 years ago, that CU Denver Development was able to split from the University of Colorado Foundation bringing its fundraisers to campus. This shift allowed for deeper understanding of the

creative work CAM faculty and students are engaged in. And now, more donors are aware of that work too.

From humble beginnings, CAM development has grown CAM recently received its largest individual contribution, a planned gift, 720%, with major opportunities from Steve Sirotkin that will support the Music Business program in the works. The college recently received its largest individual and artist/photographer Michele Wysocki, leads the way for contribution, a planned gift, from graduates to remember their start at CAM. Research in the Creative Industries Opening New Opportunities Doors opening for research related jobs in government, higher education, arts councils, creative organizations, media…

The College of Arts & Media has made an innovative move to assure that the study of the creative industries and the policy decisions facilitating their growth in Colorado becomes a part of the CAM student experience. Through the efforts of faculty member Storm Gloor and

representatives from the city, and state, a new position was funded for CAM. This position dovetails with CU Denver’s Chancellor Dr. Dorothy Horrell’s ongoing efforts to open doors for CAM with city government and several non-profits associated with the arts. The combination of this activity set the stage for Michael Seman, with a doctorate in urban planning and public policy, to thrive as CU Denver’s new Director of Creative Industries Research and Policy – and Dr. Seman has delivered.

“Our intent is that CAM Students will be equipped to enter the business world as skilled “agents of the artistic experience,” comments Dean Kaptain. Research in the creative industries will bring insights that spawn publication of

articles, books and presentations impacting the creative industry while realizing new job paths and important connections for CAM students.

Dr. Seman works with public sector organizations such as Denver Arts & Venues and Colorado Creative Industries, as well as nonprofits such as the RedLine Contemporary Art Center, Bohemian Foundation, Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, and Hemera Foundation. He is creating a win-win with organizations in need of research and CAM students interested in opening new avenues in their careers.

CAM recently received a significant grant to evaluate the Arts in Society grant program, which funds twenty-one non-profits that use art to help address social issues.

Students working on this project and the others Dr. Seman manages will gain new perspective as they analyze how the arts work beyond the studios, classrooms, and rehearsal spaces on campus and in the offices of policymakers and administrators statewide. This unique scenario will provide access to employment channels and professional networking opportunities for CAM students looking to leverage their creativity and newfound research skills into a career in the creative economy.

Film & Television A Year of Content & Creation

What are you bingeing on right now? The Department of Film & Television did more than just change their name this year. Besides adding some faculty all-stars to the roster, they created incredible films and productions.

Cinefest May 2018 Senior films are currently in production in preparation for Cinefest. This four-night event starts with screening all senior films, and on night four the senior award winning films are featured in the Rawls Theatre. An exciting collaboration with Colorado Public Television means some of the films will be shown on home TV screens. Stay tuned!

Music & Entertainment Industry Studies

The Department of Music & Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS) is proud to be the largest public music school in the Rocky Mountain region, according to The National Association of Schools of Music reports. The department has an enrollment greater than any collegiate music program in Colorado.

MEIS was honored to host the Association for Popular Music Education international conference in June. Attended by over 300 scholars, teachers, and industry professionals, the event highlighted the importance of MEIS in the popular music educators’ community as innovators of scholarship and practice.

MEIS students partnered with the Global Livingston Institute (GLI) on producing the “iKnow” concert series in Uganda, and a delegation of faculty and students experienced the “AM-PM: America por su Música” conference in Cuba. In November, MEIS partnered with the Coasulate General of Canada and Denver Arts & Venues during the “Canada Meets Colorado: Music Trade Mission,” which featured performances, discussions, and workshops.

Production and business savvy MEIS faculty continue to be recognized in the music community, both in Colorado and nationally. They are invited to perform, teach, and conduct research in Japan, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Africa. Connections with industries continue to grow, engaging in partnerships with companies such as AEG, Spotify, and Warner music.

N REVIEW Visual Arts Cortney Lane Stell (BFA, ‘04) is Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Denver-based nomadic contemporary art museum Black Cube. She was featured in One Good Eye, a website focusing on the visual arts in Denver and the West.

In June, Associate Professor Bryan Leister’s digital works were featured in Modern in Denver in an article, “Digital Animation: Fine Art’s Next Frontier?” Taylor Balkissoon ‘15, Visual Arts, also curated an exhibit at the Gildar Gallery which included work by national and regional artists. The work was titled: “Now More Than Always (GIMME GIMME THE MONEY PLEASE PLEASE I WANT THE MONEY PLEASE.)” In July, Visual Arts Assistant Professor Dr. Yang Wang and CLAS Assistant Professor Dr. Carly Leonard received an ORS grant to work together to approach and understand the extent to which mental illness, specifically schizophrenia, affected the work of Chinese painter, wood

block printer, poet and calligrapher Shi Lu. Also in July, Lyn My Dam, won the Dragon Boat Festival poster design competition.

Ms. Dam, an illustrator and graphic designer, completed her BFA in 3D and Digital Animation from the University of Colorado Denver’s College of Arts & Media in May of 2017.

October was a full and rich month for the Department of Visual Arts. Events included Art History organizing and hosting a program in honor of National Coming Out Day and a showing and discussion for “Kairos Dirt & the Errant Vacuum,” a feature-length narrative debut of director and multidisciplinary artist Madsen Minax. The program was made possible by a President’s Diversity Grant and featured the Art History program’s unique dedication to teaching modern and contemporary as well as a “historic” visual art curriculum.

Terrilynn Moore ‘17, Painting and Drawing, was sworn in for a three-year appointment as a commissioner of Aurora’s Art in Public Places program. Ms. Moore also started her Masters in Humanities at CU Denver this fall. Rebecca Berlin ‘14, Visual Arts, opened a show at the Bluebird Gallery. The unique exhibition featured Berlin’s bold, colorful drawings, accessories, clothing, and affordable prints and coincided with the Art District on Santa Fe art walk events and the Día de Los Muertos art walk in November.

Associate Professor Melissa Furness spoke at the Denver Art Museum about her recent creative work and research in China as Artist-in-Residence with RedGate Gallery and as an instructor of art with the International College Beijing through the University of Colorado Denver and China Agricultural University.

Also in October, the Department of Visual Arts was fortunate to have three exhibitions at the Museum at CU South Denver including: Associate Professor Melissa Furness’s Menhirs that featured recent and new works in painting and installation art; Professor Rian Kerrane’s Simulacra, a re-presentation and integration of familiar images with the intent of providing viewers a focus on the visual poetry of the overlooked and mundane; and IronCentric, a collection of artistic works from CU Denver Students.

Lastly, led by Illustration Instructor Rebecca Heavner, illustration students created and installed a pop-up illustration event for the public during “peak December 2017 hours” the Next Stage Gallery at The Denver Performing Arts Complex. Students designed the concept of the event that included a portfolio show and sale of students’ original illustration wares, i.e.: zines, multiples, books, buttons and silkscreen prints.

Where do CAM students go after graduation?

Many go to Hollywood, like P.J. Bloom, who is climbing to the top of his chosen profession – Music Supervision.

Roll the credits on the 50 films showcasing his musical styling’s. He has worked side-by-side with Steven Spielberg. But Bloom’s crowning success came as the Music Supervisor for Glee, a hit TV show that was on air from 2009-2015. Glee was a veritable hit machine with

a cast that broke into Billboard’s Hot 100 a record 207 times. That’s more than Elvis…more than the Beatles.

Buckley recounts; “We had an animation project for the Anschutz Medical Campus with Dr. Elaine Morrato, Associate Dean of the School of Public Health.

We started with four animation students and they enlisted an English major to

write the script. Then a film student, a business student, and a music student – totaling eight students from five departments. After the project, a few of the students got contract work and they collaborated on a music video.”

“I had no idea the CU Student Agency would take off this fast,” Buckley observes with a smile. Flying the banner “Helping businesses while building portfolios,” the CU Student Agency’s acceptance, by students and businesses, bodes well for an innovative program perfectly aligned with CAM’s core.

The LYNX: National Arts & Media Camps are an incredible summer immersion program for high school students. Sponsored by the College of Arts & Media, the fourth year of camps welcomed almost 200 creative campers from across the nation!
