TRAUMA AND GRIEF RECOVERY: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO HEALING

Erin ONeil, LCSW

Anthony Nave, LCSW, LADC, ACS

It is common when supporting a client through trauma recovery that feelings and experiences of grief are a part of the healing process. Using interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB) as a clinical framework, participants will learn the foundations of integrating trauma and grief therapy interventions in supporting the client in achieving their treatment goals. This course will build on theories from clinicians, such as Dr Judith Herman's three stages of recovery and Dr J William Worden's four tasks of mourning, to understand when to introduce various clinical interventions. .

Participants will also will learn some of the types of issues ART is used for by listening to video clips of clients speaking about their session. There will be slides and discussion about how ART is believed to work in making changes in negative sensations and images to do what the Developer calls "positization" to resolve the problem.

POLYVAGAL THEORY: ACCESSING THE HEALING POWER OF OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

Polyvagal theory describes the way our nervous systems regulate our thoughts, behaviors, and physiology in a process mediated by the vagus nerve: the literal link between our brains and our bodies. Polyvagal theory contributes greatly to our understanding of "triggering" -- how our bodies detect danger and then mobilize for fight, flight, or freeze responses. The knowledge that we can impact processes previously thought to be largely unconscious has important clinical implications for work with traumatized individuals and enables all of us to access our natural ability to experience safety, joy, and connectedness in an uncertain world.

HOW TO WORK IN THE HUMAN SERVICE FIELD AND THRIVE*

If you work in the human service field, you are working with trauma survivors, regardless of your job title This means you are at risk for the real occupational hazards of burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. These risks are often responded to with ineffective strategies such as time management, a reduction in self-care, and even a job change. Attend this workshop and learn the difference between burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and more effective strategies to manage each.

This presentation explores how yoga therapy complements the EMDR process, leading to deeper healing, lasting change, and a strengthened sense of resilience.
