C&S provided a full-service architectural and engineering design for the renovation of five existing lab area spaces at the Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) at Clarkson University.
The project goal was to create a work area that was flexible enough to accommodate multiple departments/majors now, with adaptability for future modifications. Showcasing the space to adjacent areas to promote interest in the functions was also a priority.
The scope of work included demolition of demising walls, masonry infills, lab casework, fume hoods, and a clean room to create a new open, multi-functional space of approximately 3,500 square feet. Departments/majors served include Electrical/Computer Engineering, Physics, Biology, and Materials Science Engineering.
C&S also upgraded an adjacent atrium and graduate student lab. Atrium work consisted primarily of interior design and included new flooring, high-top surfaces, bench seating, and lockers to serve the shared lab.
Graduate lab work included similar demolition and new glazing at the shared lab, and the layout of multi-functional furniture to provide casual conference, meeting, study, lounge, and management areas.
C&S designed a 9,000-square-foot renovation to the existing Penfield Library that combined three separate departments into a student services hub on the SUNY Oswego campus.
The Office of Learning Services and Educational Opportunity Program inhabit the north and south ends of the suite with private offices for staff, collaboration spaces for group work, and quiet stations for individual tutoring.
The center portion of the suite houses the Library Administration Office, which oversees all library functions, staff, and programing.
The finished project creates an active and vibrant environment supportive of learning.
C&S designed the transformation of underutilized classroom spaces in historic Sheldon Hall into professional staff offices to serve and operate the extended learning services program on campus. The 8,000-square-foot renovation modified the existing floor plan, replaced existing ceilings, and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems while maintaining the historic character of Sheldon Hall.
Throughout the space, new elements such as wood paneled doors were selected to meet the functional and acoustic requirements of modern offices while maintaining the original character of the building. C&S provided architectural and interior design services along with engineering specialties in communications, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life safety, and fire protection design.
C&S was attentive to the campus needs, and addressed the preservation of the historical nature of the building at the same time. When asked about A/E services for this campus, C&S is mentioned as a go-to leading company
C&S led the utility and site master planning, design, and construction administration and inspection for major utility, infrastructure, and site improvements to The College at Brockport’s North Campus. The four components were:
♦ Identification, location, and condition assessments of all site infrastructure assets
♦ Creation of a large GIS-based information model that links to all of the utility and site data collected during the location and condition assessment phase
♦ Development of a conceptual improvements plan for long-term campus planning
♦
Phase 1: Design and construction of $12 million of infrastructure improvements identified in the conceptual plan
♦
Phase 2: Design and construction of $20 million of infrastructure improvements, replacing assets identified in the phase I study
C&S provided design and construction administration services for interior renovations at the SUNY Canton Southworth Library. The project consisted of completely gutting approximately 8,000-square-feet of the first floor and upgrading the space, using sustainable materials, into a core student space of the campus. Our team worked closely with key stakeholders to determine functionality, efficiency, and aesthetics of the Southworth Library. Renovations included a new lobby, new circulation desk, offices, meeting room, and tutoring center complete with new floor finishes, ceilings, acoustical clouds, and LED lighting.
C&S provided design and construction phase services for a new 22,000-square-foot higher education facility—the first of its kind in Lewis County. The building will house programs and classes for Jefferson Community College, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (B.O.C.E.S.).
The duration of the actual design and construction phases was approximately eight months from concept design to building occupancy. A two-phase design approach was chosen due to the extremely aggressive schedule and to allow long-lead procurement items to go out in an early construction package.
Contract 1 consisted of site utilities, site improvements, and the construction of the structural foundation and building framing.
Contract 2 consisted of final architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security, and life safety design.
C&S established the overall project schedule and approach, coordinated for all design and permitting reviews (including two planning board review meetings), and managed the bidding and award process on Lewis County’s behalf.
C&S renovated an existing 45,000-squarefoot, four-story building to provide additional classroom and office space for Onondaga Community College’s expanding higher education program. Our scope included reconfiguring interior partitions; replacement of the roof finish, exterior doors, and windows; all interior finishes; an elevator; and the complete plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.
As primary architectural goals for the project, the college wanted to reduce the impact on the environment while providing administrative office space and classrooms. The reuse of the existing vacant building reduced construction waste compared to tearing down the building and constructing a new one.
C&S designed the reconstruction of the plaza in front of Donovan Hall and the replacement of the existing Wildcat Pedestrian Bridge at the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute campus.
The project consisted of rehabilitating an existing site electrical distribution system and sanitary and stormwater system, improving the site lighting with dark sky compliant LED light fixtures, demolishing an existing pedestrian bridge and replacing that bridge with a newly constructed steel truss bridge that would span a 100foot gorge and provide safe access for pedestrians crossing from one side of the campus to the other, and improving the overall pedestrian and vehicular access to the area as well as other site amenities and landscaping.
The campus had to remain open, so demolition and construction efforts were sequenced to avoid interfering with student access.
C&S designed the renovation of approximately 11,900 square feet of Upstate University Hospital’s main lobby and a guest service center in the first floor west wing. Major goals of the project were to create a welcoming experience for patients and their families, support intuitive wayfinding, reduce delays at the information/security badging desk, and relocate services that do not require security badging for visitors.
The new guest service center located off of the main lobby features its own waiting room with various services clustered around it. The information desk in the main lobby is further from the front entrance, allowing for more queuing space for visitors who do need security badges.
The design uses materials and color to guide visitors from the entry and information desk to the main hospital elevator lobby. New finishes give the lobby an updated appearance while enhancing some existing features like the granite panels that were part of the original hospital.
C&S completed a schematic design layout for a new Advanced Manufacturing Institute at the Cayuga Community College Fulton Campus. The design transformed an 8,000-square-foot empty retail space into a flexible and adaptable AMI ready to meet the needs of current class offerings and easily expandable to meet future needs
Classes offered in the planned space will be focused on industrial maintenance technology. Space was also included to accommodate corporate trainings and serve as a bridge between students, vendors, and local manufacturers.
SUNY Canton’s Heritage, Rushton, Smith, and Mohawk dormitory complexes were constructed in 1967. Each dormitory complex consists of four structures. The three-story dormitory buildings are connected to the one-story student commons by enclosed bridges. C&S completed an interior renovation project to improve function and aesthetics and upgrade the older HVAC, plumbing, life safety, and electrical systems. The project was a multi-year, phased rehabilitation, phased to allow the campus to use the residence halls for at least one semester a year. We also previously completed a full exterior renovation of all four dormitories including flat roofs, mansards, and the replacement of the stucco exterior walls. This project was also phased due to abatement costs and construction duration.
C&S designed the replacement of the existing natural turf, multi-purpose field at the SUNY Delhi athletic complex with a synthetic turf system. Synthetic turf fields allow nearly continuous use in all types of weather, without damage or degradation, and significantly reduce the maintenance burden by eliminating mowing, watering, line painting, turf repair, and overseeding.
The replacement field was designed to NCAA standards and striped for soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse. In addition to the field itself, C&S designed supporting facilities such as accessible walkways, fencing, lighting for the field and walkways, scoreboards and delay of game clocks, and an elevated press box with a filming deck above supported by a masonry storage building below.
C&S was the construction manager for this 147,327-square-foot complex consisting of two buildings connected by a walk-through lobby. The complex footprint includes a larger recreational building to the south and a smaller dining hall to the north, linked by a connecting lobby in the center. The structures are both two stories, with ten stairwells and two elevators for internal pedestrian traffic between the two facilities. Major components and features include a three-court gym, a separate single court gym, natatorium pool and spa area, two golf simulators, a climbing wall, and circuit-free weight and cardio training areas surrounded by an elevated, mezzanine-type, three-lane track that wraps around the second floor perimeter. Other major components include the Recreational Sports Department offices, the Outdoor Pursuits, and Athletic Equipment Rental Department. The nine-acre site also required the reconstruction of all associated roads and parking lots and the installation of two underground stormwater retention systems.
