Saratoga Bariatrics Presents Free Probiotics Discussion

SARATOGA COUNTY - The Saratoga Bariatric Surgery and Weight-Loss Program is presenting “The Guts of Probiotics” at its next monthly support group meeting on Monday April 2, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Embassy Suites by Hilton located at 86 Congress Street in Saratoga Springs. The event is free and open to anyone who is considering bariatric surgery, has undergone bariatric surgery, or is generally working on or interested in weight loss. There is no requirement to have been a patient at Saratoga Hospital to attend. The monthly support group provides information and support about all aspects of weight loss through various topics presented each month.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The “Adopt-a-Box” fundraiser far surpassed its goal of $1500 to send 100 boxes of books for our troops. In fact because of the generosity and concern for the troops, in Feb. and March enough money has been raised to send over 400 boxes to our deployed troops or those recovering in VA hospitals.

Fleece Blanket Project!!!

SCOTIA - Once again Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on the corner of Glen Ave. & So. Reynolds Street in Scotia will be working on a service project for needy people in the U.S. and around the world. Thanks to your help, the Heart Pillow Project was a great success and 55 heart shaped pillows were sent to Ellis Hospital. On Saturday, April 7th from 10 AM until Noon we will be tying fleece blankets which will be sent to Lutheran World Relief.

LWR provides materials for people in need all over the globe and the blankets will keep poor people warm during the cold nights. The fleece material will need to be cut into strips around the edge and then tied into a square knot. If you would like to bring your sewing shears we would be very grateful but please come with or without shears.

Richard Cerasani, author of Love Letters From Mount Rushmore, will be guest speaker. Cerasani’s discovery of letters from his father, a sculptor working on Mount Rushmore to his mother raising two boys over 1500 miles away, led him to write the book showing the human struggle to create the Mount Rushmore Memorial. Cerasani has been a professional actor known for his television work. The program is open to the public. A business meeting will follow.

Saratoga County Students Who Are Active With Saratoga County Fair May Apply For $1,000 Scholarships

BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County Fair announces today that the 2018 New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs and New York State Showpeople’s Association college scholarships are open for applications. This year the NYSAAF and NYSSA will be awarding up to seven $1,000 scholarships to current New York State high school seniors and also students enrolled in college.

To qualify, a student must be active currently or have been active in the past at the Saratoga County Fair or with the New York State Showpeople’s Association. All applicants from Saratoga County must submit their applications through the Saratoga County Fair no later than Friday, April 2, 2018.

Application is open to all students regardless of their field of study. However, additional consideration may be given to those applicants pursuing a degree in a field related to agriculture, fair management or the outdoor amusement business.

The seven 2017 scholarship recipients included students pursuing studies in animal science, nursing, fashion and textiles, agricultural business development and other areas.

None were from Saratoga County last year.

Information is available at the Saratoga County Fair office, 162 Prospect Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020, as well as through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County and from local high school guidance offices.

A couple of warmer days have given spring and our moods a much-needed jump start. This is the weather that Pansies love. While there is little hope that you could get a marigold or impatiens to survive the many frosts of April, pansies and Pansy

violas not only survive these cold days of early spring, they actually thrive in the cold. Frost won’t even damage the dainty blossoms of these little tough guys. After a long flower-less winter, pansies are always welcome sight when they arrive at the garden center!

Put on a happy face! The name ‘Pansy’ comes from the

French word ‘pensee’ which means ‘to think’. In the Victorian language of flowers, pansies indicate merriment and “thinking of you”. Since their flowers look so much like little faces, it is easy to attribute little personalities to them. They do look merry, don’t they?

It’s easy to grow your own original too. In the past, violas and pansies were considered biennials meaning that during the first year of growth from seeds, no flowers are produced. It is only during the second year that flowers appear. Plant breeders have now developed pansies that will flower during the first year of growth from seed. They will also survive winter in

sheltered locations so you can expect your pansies and violas to put on their show for a couple of years. If you let them go to seed, you may get to enjoy them even longer, although they do cross pollinate so you may get flowers far different from the ones you originally planted.

Pansies are bred from the smaller-flowered violas and tend to revert to the smaller viola flower from generation to generation. I love this kind of little surprise in the garden so some pansies usually follow me home from the garden center every spring. What better way to chase those winter blues away.

SARATOGA COUNTY - Since 1990, the Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild has offered scholarships to those high school seniors in the greater Saratoga County area interested in pursuing healthcare careers. Graduates may be exploring a broad range of medical careers: pre-med, nursing, biomedical research, pharmacology, medical imaging, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, physician’s assistant, mental health, and health care management. This year, the Guild is offering five $1,500 scholarships. Eligible students must be entering college in September of 2018, have a 2.5 GPA or higher, and a documented record of community service.

Application deadline is April 2, 2018. Scholarship recipients will be honored at the Volunteer Guild’s Annual Recognition Dinner on May 10, 2018. Requirements and applications are available through local high school guidance offices and online at www.saratogahospital.org/aboutus/ volunteering.

Saratoga National Historical Park Announces Winter 100 Mile Challenge

CAPITAL DISTRICT - With the inaugural 100 Mile Challenge now over, Saratoga National Historical Park encourages you to continue to “Find Your Park” and rack up those miles! Get to know your local national park by joining the Winter 100 Mile Challenge – brush off your snowshoes or skis, or hike the trails and see if you can accumulate 100 miles at the battlefield between now and April 30, 2018. Through this challenge people can enjoy the rich natural and cultural heritage of this local site as they explore their national park, plus get some exercise too!

Anyone can take part in this challenge, from beginners to advanced hikers and skiers, young and old, human and canine.

Pets are great companions for enjoying the outdoors - to complete this challenge, each participating pet must hike 100 miles in the park with their human companion, following park pet policies.

Each participant must register for the challenge. To register, email the names of all participants (dogs included) to: SARA_ info@nps.gov – rules for participation and a log to track your mileage will be sent in response to your registration. The park will periodically send email messages with updates about the challenge, including news about the upcoming Summer 100 Mile Challenge, future hiking and biking events in the park, cold weather recreation tips, and motivational thoughts. Your email address will not be shared with others.

Each participant that completes 100 miles between now and April 30, 2018 will receive an award for their achievement, but the real awards you’ll get for completing this challenge are the new experiences and memories you’ll gain while on these adventures in your local national park. Hopefully this challenge will inspire you to get out and explore more national parks; after all there are more than 400 throughout the country!

BLIA Offers Power Squadron Boating Course

SARATOGA COUNTY - Ballston Lake Improvement Association (BLIA) will sponsor a United States Power Squadron basic boating course for four evenings beginning May 8 at the Ballston Lake Firehouse on Rt. 146A. This course, which is approved

by New York State, will be conducted by Dr. Peter Herman, a certified Power Squadron instructor.

It consists of eight hours, split between four nights, two hours each night. The classes will be held from 6:30 – 8:30 pm on Tuesday, May 8th, Wednesday, May 9th, Tuesday, May 15th and Wednesday, May16th.

Upon completion of all eight hours, the student will receive a registered card and certificate. Students must be at least 10 years of age to take the course. New York State requires ALL operators of personal watercraft (jet skis) to hold a NYS approved boating certificate and be at least 14 years of age. Non personal watercraft operators need to be 10 years old and have the certificate. The cost of the course is $40.00 for the first family member and $15.00 for each additional family member.

SARATOGA COUNTY - Saratoga County Office for the Aging sponsors the Senior Nutrition Program in Saratoga County. Part of our program is Congregate Dining where meals are served at 12 noon at several meal sites throughout Saratoga County. Meal sites are located in: Ballston Spa, Charlton, Clifton Park, Corinth, Edinburg, Galway, Greenfield, Hadley, Halfmoon, Malta, Mechanicville, Moreau, Saratoga, Schuylerville, and Waterford. This nutritious lunch is served MondaysFridays. Reservations are required at least one day in advance by 12 noon. A registration form must be completed by each participant annually. NO food/ drink items can be taken to go. Participants will receive a monthly contribution letter; the suggested donation is $2.00 per meal for those age 60 and over. These 5 adorable, 10 week old Boxer/Bulldog mix puppies were in a high kill shelter in the South.

Another rescue had committed to them but had to back out last minute because there was no transport to get them where they needed to go. We were contacted by one of our rescue coordinators who told us the situation, and before she could even ask we said “Of course we’ll help!”.

How To Clear A Clogged Drain Home plumbing systems are designed to handle heavy usage. When everything is working as it should, toilets flush, showers drain properly, and sink basins empty of water in a snap.

What Is The Tiny House Movement?

The tiny house movement has transformed the way many people look at housing and how it can help them downsize not only their residences, but also their lives.

Living small has been embraced as an eco-friendly way to cut costs and simplify life. According to the tiny house resource The Tiny Life, the typical American home is 2,600 square feet, while the typical tiny house is between 100 and 400 square feet. Many tiny homes are smaller than the average urban apartment.

Proponents of the small house movement say that living the tiny life isn’t really a sacrifice, but a way to experience a simpler, fuller life that frees them from expensive mortgage payments and unnecessary clutter.

One of the advantages of tiny house living is that buyers are often able to buy their homes (whether stationary or mobile) outright, eliminating the need to finance their purchases.

Tiny homes also boast much lower utility bills than more traditional homes. Outfitting tiny homes with woodburning appliances can keep heating costs to a minimum.

In some instances, tiny homes are completely off the grid, harvesting electricity through solar panels and employing rain-capturing technology to supply water.

How To Control Common Spring Pests Just when winter thaws out and people are anxious to enjoy the blooming flowers and luscious lawns of spring, pesky pests can appear and impact comfort levels and safety.

Many pests resume their levels of activity as spring draws closer and temperatures warm up. The presence of these insects and rodents may cause problems in and around a home, which makes it essential to recognize them and avoid issues. The following are some of the more common spring pests and how to remedy infestations.

Pavement ants Pavement ants are some of the most common pests residents encounter inside and outside of their homes. These ants are light brown to black with appendages that are lighter than the rest of their bodies. Small in stature, pavement ants have parallel lines on their heads and thorax, according to pest extermination company Orkin.

Although pavement ants nest outdoors, they can enter homes through small crevices in search of food scraps. Their large colonies may not disappear until treatment is introduced.

Keep foods in tightly sealed containers, clear counters and floors of crumbs, and address water sources, such as leaks.

Pesticides may be needed in extreme conditions.

5 Effective Ways To Alleviate Stress Stress affects everyone at some point in their lives and does not discriminate based on gender, nationality, ethnicity, economic status, or age. The American Institute of Stress says job-related stress costs businesses millions of dollars each year due to unanticipated absences. In fact, work is the foremost source of stress for many adults.

Although not all stress is bad and stress responses can motivate people to perform more effectively, repeated stress is a problem. The National Institute of Mental Health says routine stress that becomes chronic can suppress immune system functions, disrupt digestion, adversely affect sleep, and cause abnormal changes in reproductive systems. People who have chronic stress are often prone to frequent and severe viral infections, like colds and the flu.

Repetitive stress may be the

most difficult to recognize because it often becomes a part of daily life. Managing stress and anxiety involves finding techniques that work for each individual.

While not every approach works for everyone, the following are five effective means to managing stress.

1. Exercise: The American Psychological Association says research continues to confirm the benefits of exercise in regard to combatting stress. Regular exercise has long-term benefits, but even a 20-minute exercise session during a stressful time can produce an immediate effect that lasts a few hours.

2. Deep breathing: Mindful breathing can be effective and only takes 10 minutes.

Men and women battling stress can sit in a comfortable position with their eyes closed and imagine themselves in a relaxing place while slowly breathing in

and out.

3. Take a break: Removing oneself from a stressful situation for a little while can be helpful. A brief break of 15 to 20 minutes can provide a sense of calm.

4.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy: Harvard Medical School defines cognitivebehavioral therapy, or CBT, as a process of changing unhealthy thinking in order to change emotions.

Therapists will identify negative thinking patterns and help patients learn to automatically replace them with healthy or positive thoughts.

5. Support network: Simply having someone to talk to can help tame stress. People should surround themselves with others they trust who are good listeners.

These can be friends, family members or professional therapists. Talking oneself through stressful situations can provide relief.
