Paddling for a Cure
ALPLAUS – The Alplaus Fire Departments Ladies Auxiliary is proud to present the 6th annual Paddling for a Cure event, which raises money for our local chapter of the American Cancer Society, for Making Strides against breast cancer. On Sunday, July 17, paddlers will gather at the Capital Region Maritime Center, 901 Maritime Drive in Alplaus (Schenectady County). Make a personal donation, collect pledges or form a team. Registration begins at 8am. Group launch to immediately follow. Enjoy up to a five-mile paddle on the scenic Mohawk River. Live entertainment by Running the River. Food, beverages, prizes, and a 12’ Perception Carolina kayak will be raffled off. $10 covers the cost of registration and insurance. Registration forms can be printed from www.alplaus.org (click on Paddling for a Cure). Insured and sanctioned by the American Canoe Association. ESYO Receives ASCAP Award
SCHENECTADY – Empire State Youth Orchestras (ESYO) received an Award for Adventurous Programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and the League of American Orchestras at the League’s annual conference in Minneapolis recently. ESYO’s award was among 26 presented for the 20102011 season. Helen Cha-Pyo, ESYO’s Music Director and Conductor of its Youth Orchestra, attended the conference to accept the 2nd place, $300 award in the Youth Orchestra division; the first and third place awards in that division were given to Chicago Youth Symphony and New York Youth Symphony, respectively. Founded in 1979, ESYO has been recognized as a premier music education/performance program for youth and has received three prestigious national awards.
