Plans for the 2023 Sand Lake Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony are underway. To attract more participation and attendance this year, we encourage all interested civic organizations, businesses, churches, community and youth groups and individuals to participate in this year’s parade.

This year’s Sand Lake Memorial Day Parade will be Monday, May 29, at 10:00 am. The Parade route is from Averill Ave. in Westfall Village to the Sand Lake Veteran’s Memorial Park on NYS Route 43. Ceremonies will begin at about 10:30 in the Veterans Park.

Our honored speaker will be Colonel Lenny Kness, USA, Ret. He hails from Chadwick, Ill. He has served with the 2nd Infantry Division in

June Farms looking for pair to take part in streaming series

WEST SAND LAKE

— June Farms is looking for a couple ready to say “I do” to head to the altar at the sprawling farm in Rensselaer County.

“June Farms is looking for excited couples who would also be willing to participate in an upcoming reality series (on a major streaming service!) set at June Farms and following the

talented farm staff as they create oneof-a-kind experiences for their guests,” read a portion of the business’ post on Instagram.

The network — the specific one isn’t being revealed yet — bought eight episodes. The general format of the show, said farm owner Matt Baumgartner, is that cameras follow the couple and the staff through the process of building and delivering a one-of-a-kind wedding or party. The show also follows the personal lives of the farm staff.

“It is a ‘Below Deck’ meets ‘Vanderpump Rules’ format,” Baumgartner said.

Nine staff members — including Baumgartner — will be featured as principal cast members on the show. All of them have already been working at June Farms.

This is a variation of the same show revealed in April 2022. Last spring, the Times Union said a pilot, following the venue’s event planning staff, was being filmed at the farm. That was done. Now the show has been green-lit and is moving forward with a first season.

Baumgartner said he’s excited, yet nervous, about the show.

“I’m excited for the world to see our beautiful

little farm, and how wonderful the June Farms staff is,” Baumgartner said.

“And hopefully more cabin bookings,” he added, laughing.

Here are the details if you, or someone you know, may be interested:

Dates: The couple must be married next month — on June 8, 18, 15 or 28.

What to do: If interested, email WeddingsAt-JuneFarms@gmail.com explaining why you should be chosen. Include a photo of you and your partner.

Deadline: Submissions should be received by Friday, May 19.

If you qualify, and are the right fit, someone from the production will be in touch. The venue will choose one couple. The wedding will not be free to the couple — but will be offered at a discount.

POUGHKEEPSIE — A new report from a Hudson Valley research and policy nonprofit examines a major problem in the region — a lack of available workers.

The report, by Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress, traces the issue back to demographic and migrational trends that have decreased the region’s population and its children.

The ‘Great People Shortage’ is not unique to the Hudson Valley, but instead reflects a trend toward a global population decline as birth rates fall below the level needed to maintain the world’s population. Women must have 2.1 children to maintain a population,

but the birth rate in many countries — including Germany, Japan, the U.K., China and the U.S. — have fallen far below this. The birth rate in New York was 1.57 in 2020, according to the report.

Another factor specific to the Hudson Valley is also affecting the demographics and size of its population, according to the report: the consistent migration of residents to other parts of the state and country, a trend the report also analyzes.

The number of live births in the Hudson Valley has declined by 10 percent since 1997, according to the report. The decline would be far more drastic if it was not for Orthodox Jewish populations residing year-round in Rockland,

Orange and Sullivan counties, who generally have more children than the area’s population as a whole.

The report takes note of Rockland County, where the town of Rama-po, where the county’s Orthodox Jewish population is concentrated, saw live births increase by 41 percent from 2002 to 2015. Births in the four remaining towns in the county declined by between 10 and 32 percent during the same period.

Live births fell most drastically in Putnam County between 1997 and 2019, with a 35 percent decline, followed by Greene County, with a 26.6 percent decline, according to the report.

Freedetailed,writtenquotes,references providedwithdrivingdirections BetterBusinessBureauA+rating.

This decline is being felt in the region’s schools, which have 34,000 fewer students today than in the early 2000s; every public school district in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam and Ulster counties has seen their enrollments decline since 2007, according to the report.

This has led to

the shuttering of schools across the region. Last week, an Ulster County school board voted to close two of its elementary schools in the Catskills over the next five years due to declining enrollment.

The decline in births is exacerbated by consistent out-migration, according to the report. The total net migration for the Hudson Valley — the number of people moving into the region minus the people moving out — was negative every year except for 2020, when the pandemic sent urban residents fleeing to more rural environs.

The report qualifies the reasons people move away, which include personal decisions related to family and residents wanting to move to warmer locales, but the top reason people gave for moving away during the last five years studied was housing.

These factors have led to a fall in the number of children and teenagers in the Hudson Valley, while the number of people over the age of 55 has increased as the population ages, according to the report. Since today’s children and teens become tomorrow’s workers, this will lead to more drastic labor shortages in the future —

Two Conservation Groups, Renss. Plateau Alliance and Renss. Land Trust, Begin Steps to Merge

Two nationally accredited land trusts in Rensselaer County, NY, the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) and Rensselaer Land Trust (RLT) have begun taking steps to merge.

After years of parallel and collaborative conservation work, the boards of directors of both organizations voted in March 2023 to take this step to advance their mutual goal of conservation in Rensselaer County.

Town Supervisor’s office at (518) 283-5313 or email at supervisorsoffice@ northgreenbush.org.

We are inviting all veterans to march and lead off our parade. If you are a business, school group or team in town, we’d love for you to participate. For

organizations, please let us know you would be interested so we can include you in the lineup.

Melvin Roads

Book Talk

Melvin Roads American Legion is having a book

“This merger will allow us to make greater strides in land and water conservation at a time when that’s more important than ever,” said RPA Executive Director Jim Bonesteel.

All conserved natural areas managed by the two land trusts will remain protected in perpetuity. The community programs, volunteer committees, events, and partnerships of both organizations will continue to serve people of all ages in the Capital Region. Rensselaer Land Trust’s Board President Bob Crowley said, “The founders and volunteers behind RLT have brought us this far. This merger ensures the good work continues.”

The Rensselaer Land Trust was founded in 1987 with a mission to conserve the open spaces, watersheds, and natural habitats of Rensselaer County, NY. The Rensselaer Plateau Alliance was founded in 2008 with a mission to work with the community to promote and facilitate the conservation of the Rensselaer Plateau’s undeveloped and unfragmented forests and other ecologically important areas.

Collectively, the two organizations have conserved more than 15,000 acres of forests and open space in Rensselaer County. In 2019, RPA and RLT worked together to conserve the 76-acre Poesten Kill Bends preserve in the City of Troy. Both organizations have achieved national accreditation by meeting high standards for land protection, stewardship, and financial and organizational management.

Next steps forward include due diligence to review land management, legal, and financial responsibilities. To learn more, contact Jim Bonesteel at jim@rensselaerplateau.org or Bob Crowley at 518-659-5263

Red Flags of Abusive Behavior in a Male or Female Partner

A potential abuser may seem like a dream partner at the beginning of the relationship. Red flags like the following may show up later: commitment - living together - marriage - pregnancy - child birth or after many years. Many abusers occasionally shower love and affection to mask their abuse and keep the victim captive. The abuser

may progress from verbal, emotional and controlling to physical abuse. The earlier the victim disengages from the abuser the lesser will be the damage to self and children’s mental and physical health.

Common Red Flags

Embarrassing you or putting you down.

Controlling who you see, where you go or do.

Discouraging you from being in contact with your friends or family.

Preventing you from working or attending school.

Taking your money or valuables and refusing to give you money.

Saying you are a bad parent, threatening to harm you or take away your children.

Pressuring you to use drugs or alcohol.

Creating fear in you by looking at you or acting in scary ways.

Damaging your property, threatening to hurt or kill your pets.

Intimidating you with guns, knives or in any other way.

Blocking your way, shoving, slapping, choking or hitting you.

Threatening to hurt or kill you.

Threatening to commit suicide for not honoring partner’s wishes or orders.

Pressuring you to have sex when you don’t want.

Male partner preventing a female partner from using birth control or pressuring to become pregnant when she isn’t ready.

Denying abuse or blaming you for it.

FREE 24/7 help is available from the following agencies. Their trained advocates will patiently listen to you without judgment, explore your options and help you develop a safety plan to exit the relationship. They offer legal support and counseling and if needed, a safe shelter for you, your children and maybe pets also. You, your friend or family member can anonymously call the following numbers, any number of times. You deserve respect. You can change your life. It’s never too late to seek help.

It has certainly been a challenging time but we are still here 24/7 365 to serve the Town. Inflation is tough on everyone and that includes us. As you can imagine filling an Ambulance with gas is getting brutal and the prices on all our other equipment are skyrocketing as well.

Remember, it is your generous support, which is greatly appreciated, that goes a long way toward keeping this service available in the town.

The Link Between Stress and Cancer

Adults have an issue with stress. According to a survey from the American Psychological Association released in December 2022, more than one in four Americans indicated they expected to experience more stress at the start of 2023 than they had at the start of 2022.

And it’s not just Americans feeling the sting of stress, as the American Institute of Stress indicates 35 percent of individuals across 143 countries feel stressed out.

Stress is not always a bad thing. Roughly a decade ago, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, discovered that acute stress in rats caused the stem cells in their brain to grow rapidly into new nerve cells that ultimately improved the animals’ mental performance.

However, chronic stress, which the APA characterizes as constant and persistent stress over an extended period of time, can have a profoundly negative effect on overall health.

And that negative effect includes a link to cancer, especially for survivors of the disease.

A 2020 study from researchers at The Wistar Institute Cancer Center in Philadelphia found that a stress hormone triggered a reaction in immune cells that awakened dormant cancer cells. Those cells eventually formed into tumors.

When discussing the link between stress and cancer, it’s important to note that many studies, including the one conducted by researchers at the Wistar Institute, have shown that stress and cancer can cause the disease to grow and spread in mice.

The National Cancer Institute notes that studies have not identified a clear link between stress and cancer outcomes in humans.

But researchers urge patience, noting that the Wistar Institute study is a significant step forward in studying the potential link between stress and cancer in humans.

Further study in the coming years could very well identify a similar link in humans as the one already discovered in mice.

In the meantime, individuals are urged to take stress seriously and not simply accept it as a mere fact of twenty-first century life. And that’s especially important for individuals who have been diagnosed with cancer, including those who are in treatment and others who have successfully finished

their treatment.

According to City of Hope, one of just 52 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States, talking to others and relying on loved ones when receiving treatment; speaking with someone in a neutral position, such as a therapist; and exercising regularly are some of the ways to overcome chronic stress.

City of Hope also notes the stress-reducing benefits of wellness practices such as meditation and yoga in regard to combatting stress.

Chronic stress can have a lasting and negative impact on overall health. Though the link between chronic

stress and cancer requires more study before researchers can reach a conclusion about such a connection, individuals are urged to embrace the many ways they can reduce chronic stress with a goal of living healthier, happier and, hopefully, cancer-free lives.

Greenbush Historical Society Presents “Protection From Evil”

Please join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, May 21, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library. Our speaker will be Walter Wheeler who will discuss the use of talismans throughout history—from ancient times to the present. Merriam-Webster defines talismans as “an object held as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune.”

This can be an object that holds protective powers and all cultures have manifestations of such objects. Evidence of protective talismans have been found at early 17th century archaeological sites and existing buildings throughout the Hudson Valley. Wheeler’s talk will present examples of some of these practices, such as symbolic markings or carvings, foundation deposits, and horseshoes hung over doors, from 1625 to the present.

The relationship to similar European practices will be covered. All GHS programs are free and open to the public but registration at the library is required. Please call 518-477-7476 to reserve a seat.

6 Signs You May Need a New HVAC System

There’s no place like home, especially when that home is a comfortable and safe haven. One of the ways residents find comfort in their homes is by maintaining the right indoor temperatures, which fluctuate along with the seasons. While there is much to be said about opening windows and doors to let Mother Nature do her thing, indoor comfort is often maintained with an HVAC system. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. It can include heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioning units. It is an automated system that works by adjusting a thermostat to regulate air temperature, and sometimes humidity, in the home. According to Enviguard, a commercial contracting provider, HVAC systems also may be used to improve indoor air quality through filtration and oxygen replacement.

As with any mechanical device, an HVAC system has a life span that must be considered. Should any of the following conditions be present, it is likely time to consult with an HVAC technician to see if repairs or replacement of the entire system is warranted.

1. Age If the HVAC system is more than 10 years old, it could be time to begin budgeting for a new unit. Many modern, efficient systems may last 12 to 14 years with routine maintenance. But it’s good to keep an HVAC system’s age in mind so you can readily recognize when it might start to fail.

2. Longer or constant running times

An efficient, properly working system will quickly heat or cool the home and then turn off. A system that is turning on repeatedly or having to run for awhile before the set temperature is reached could be nearing the end of its utility.

3. Strange noises

Groaning, banging or loud humming noises should be addressed. While these noises may indicate that certain components need maintenance or replacement, they also could be symptoms of age and a system nearing failure.

4. Frequent repair visits

Knowing the HVAC company’s repair person by name

JOEY’SJUNKREMOVAL,LLC

is a sign that the system has required too much work in recent months. Repeated issues and repairs are probably signs that it’s time to consider a system replacement.

5. Higher bills Sticker shock when receiving electricity or gas bills likely mean the HVAC system isn’t working efficiently and might need to be replaced.

6. Poor indoor air quality

If the home is dusty or humid or even if allergies seem to have cropped up out of nowhere, this could indicate a poorly functioning HVAC system.

HVAC systems are vital to keeping indoor environments comfortable and safe. Such systems may exhibit certain signs that indicate they need to be replaced.

This week’s home in Glenville was built in 1961, and encompasses

Don’t mistake this week’s House of the Week for your run-of-the-mill, mid-century suburban split-level because the whimsical interior is anything but ordinary. Stylish and sophisticated, 4 Boyle Road is currently occupied by a couple — an artist and an interior designer — who have created an atmosphere that encapsulates their talent and eclectic taste. The pair is moving. Many of the unique design elements — like the bicycle and bowling pin decor — will likely go with them, but they are leaving behind a bright, open and airy modernized 2,700-squarefoot home that offers four bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and an enormous master closet. A seafoam green backsplash adds a pop of color to the updated kitchen that offers white

cabinets, granite countertops and a large island with an attached table for dining. A true 1961 tri-level, the living room, den and family room are divided across multiple floors, so there are several spots to socialize or slip away. There’s plenty of green space outdoors, including professionally planned gardens.

and the report predicts the problem will only get worse.

The report predicts this will also lead to business closures, especially among small businesses, not only because of a lack of employees, but a lack of consumers. The region will also be unable to attract new business investment for the same reason. Available employees may benefit, according to the report, as an intense demand for employees forces businesses to raise wages.

Changes in population would also have a deleterious effect on the Hudson Valley’s health care systems. Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress Executive Director Adam Bosch, who presented the report to reporters Thursday morning, said hospitals already must hire many temporary employees from other parts of the country to fill gaps in their workforce, and the hospitals would be dealing with more patients in the future as the population grows older. These patients would largely be insured through Medicare, which pays out far less than private insurers, a situation that “could signal (a) tough time for our medical centers and hospitals,” according to the report.

The report also considers something that would make the Hudson Valley’s population fall far faster — what if the trendy region falls out of favor? The great number of short-term rentals, such as Airbnbs, in the region would dry up, and second homeowners, more fickle and mobile than permanent residents, could move to the newest chic spot.

This, among other problems, could cause the local property-tax base to collapse, “affect(ing) the long-term fiscal health and solvency of local governments,” according to the report.

The report makes several policy recommendations to avoid these problems. The most prominent? More housing.

The problem is not only a general lack of housing — the region has only created 0.45 new housing units for every new job its created over the past 15 years, according to the report — but a lack of housing residents can afford. This issue is especially prominent in Columbia County, where the average resident can afford the average home in only three of the county’s 19 municipalities.

to do good for your community.

Here’s how it works: the full dinner, including half a chicken, potatoes, corn on the cob & coleslaw is $15.00, the Do Good part is that 100% of the profits will be divided equally between Doors of Hope, and Concerns U Food Pantries. So you see, you will Eat Good, and Do Good.

All meals are take out, access to Hope’s parking lot is an easy in and out off of 470 Winter Street Extension, near Blooming Grove. Advance orders can be made through the web site, WWW.Hopelc.org.

The date is Thursday May 18th, running from 3pm to 6pm, a great mid-week meal without any of the work. So plan now to “Eat Good & Do Good” See you there! www. hopelc.org.

New housing was hindered by “our local codes and review processes,” which “make it very difficult to build more of the housing we direly need,” according to the report.

The report also suggested lowering property taxes, which it found to be a legitimate reason for people leaving the region.

“The high cost of living, driven in large part by taxes, has already caused too many people to vote with their feet and leave New York,” according to the report.

The report also suggests state marketing geared toward getting people to live in the Hudson Valley, not just visit it, and an effort to get students from the many colleges in the region to stay here after graduation.

The final recommendation encapsulates an issue currently in the headlines: migration from other countries.

Every expert from every field interviewed for the report mentioned immigration as a possible solution to the Hudson Valley’s woes.

“Forget the politics for a moment, and just think of our demographics like a mathematical problem,” the report states. “Our region needs people. There are lots of hardworking people who want a place to live in our country. A rational immigration policy at the federal level could help regions like the Hudson Valley, whose significant labor shortages could be allayed by the next wave of new Americans.”
