Study could lead to new pedestrian, bike paths

RENSSELAER — A newly released study of Rensselaer’s waterfront could lead to new bike and walking paths, reconfigured roads and better access to the Hudson River.

The study, conducted by the city of Rensselaer and the Capital District Transportation Committee, began in the summer of 2022 and examined existing travel conditions for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers as well as previous studies and public input, a release

from CDTC Thursday said. The study is part of CDTC’s Unified Planning Work Program, which provides funds for local government to plan community-based transportation and land use.

“The city’s very interested in creating a more walkable area there,” CDTC Executive Director Sandra Misiewicz said Saturday.

The area of study includes the city’s Hilton Center Brownfield Redevelopment Area and the proposed Rensselaer Riverwalk/ RPI Trail. Nearby streets include Washington and Forbes Avenues. Misiewicz said general recommendations include linking walking trails, providing safe access to the waterfront and developing more “complete streets” in the area — roads designed to accommodate multiple types of users with bike lanes, transit stops and improved sidewalks and crosswalks.

Plans to replace the Livingston Avenue bridge — a rail bridge which connects Albany and Rensselaer across the Hudson River — and restore its pedestrian and bike trail, could also be an opportunity to improve the waterfront, she said.

Student workers organizing for better pay at Skidmore, RPI

SPRINGS — Unions nationwide have seen a resurgence in recent years with workers at Amazon warehouses, Starbucks coffee shops, Trader Joe’s supermarkets and not-for-profit groups looking to organize.

Now, resident advisers in college dormitories have joined the trend.

Locally, RAs at Skidmore College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have held or scheduled votes on union representation.

RAs at RPI in recent weeks voted 55-9 to join the Office Employees International Union. They expect to begin talks with the administration regarding a labor contract over the summer.

In the coming weeks, RAs at Skidmore will vote on whether to affiliate with the Service Employees International Union.

Skidmore’s adjunct and non-tenure track teachers voted last September to affiliate with the same SEIU Local 200 union.

The RAs are joining the ranks of other colleges and universities including Fordham, Wesleyan, Barnard, University of Pennsylvania and Tufts, where resident advisers are in various stages of organizing.

Resident advisers are students who serve as a resource to others in their dorms. Rather than advising on academics, they help students with any number of problems, ranging from being locked out of their rooms at 3 a.m. to mental health crises and drug abuse.

Some specific highlights of the study include improving access Hilton Park and its boat launch — accessible only by a hairpin turn off Forbes Avenue on Tracy Street — making Forbes Avenue a one-way road with a separate bike/pedestrian path, and adding curb extensions to the intersection at Washington Avenue to decrease pedestrian crossings.

What comes next will depend on what city government resolves to implement, Misiewicz said. Ketura Vics, city director of planning and development, expressed support of the study in Thursday’s statement.

“Rensselaer’s waterfront is highly valued by the local community and uniquely situated along the Hudson River in the Capital Region,” Vics said. “This study complements years of planning to develop the City’s waterfront by identifying opportunities to create safe access to our waterfront for pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles.”

COURTESY OF FRANCIE WHARTON Skidmore College resident advisers and supporters recently held a rally in favor of unionizing.

For the work, RAs typically get free housing, worth up to $10,000. Some also receive modest stipends.

Community “Repair Café” Gathering

May 6th in North Greenbush

Toss it away? No way! Bring in your used, broken items for free on-the-spot repairs.

The all-volunteer group Rensselaer Repair Café is offering a community repair café on Saturday, May 6th, from 10AM to 2PM at Robert C. Parker School, 4254 NY Route 43, North Greenbush, NY 12198.

A “repair café” is a free meeting place where people come together to repair items they might otherwise throw away, while passing on practical knowledge from one generation to another. It’s an ongoing learning process, which can build community along the way. If you have nothing to repair, you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, or lend a hand with someone else’s repair job. You can also get inspired at our reading table – by leafing through books on repair or DIY.

We welcome all broken items, but examples of things we can help you repair include: clothing, furniture, electrical appliances, toys, bicycles and electronics.

“We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair,” said Greg Watson, Coordinator, Rensselaer Repair Café. “The trouble is, these days it’s often not cost-effective to have something repaired. Our café is an opportunity for the community to get help fixing their items at no cost, and they may even learn enough from our experts to repair things on their own the next time.”

Volunteers Needed!

We’re still looking for volunteers with a variety of skills who enjoy sharing their knowledge with their neighbors. We need community members who can help with this or future repair cafes. We are especially looking for people who are handy with: clothing/textile, electrical appliances, bicycles and furniture/wooden objects. To volunteer, email us at info@rensselaer-repair.cafe.

For the Cause: Women of the Civil War at Stephentown Heritage Center

Historical reenactor Phyllis Chapman will present “For the Cause: Women of the Civil War” on Sunday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m. She will appear as Dr. Mary Walker, Civil War surgeon, telling of her work and the contributions of other women during that bitter conflict. This Stephentown Historical Society program meeting will be held at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples

Road, Stephentown, New York. The program is free and the building is handicapped accessible. For directions, telephone (518) 733-0010.

While Civil War generals, armies, and battles have been the subject of countless books, magazine articles and films, the contributions of women in the conflict have been less noted. Women were no less involved than the men, sometimes in strikingly similar roles. The first woman ever to lead a military mission for the U. S. Army did so in 1863, and, she was a woman of color. The only female Medal of Honor recipient ever, of over 3500 recipients, was a Civil War surgeon who struggled for recognition both during and after the War.

Women on both sides of the conflict supported their respective causes in ways great and small: from serving as nurses, spies, writers, in battle, in industry, or by simply keeping their homes and farms running. For some, their war activities propelled them toward a new, independent mindset, and more active future roles in society.

City of Cortland promotes the program as: “No-MowMay is a conservation initiative to promote healthy habitat for people & pollinators. Residents let their lawns grow – just during the month of May. Let wildflowers blossom for pollinators. [https://www.cortland.org/502/ No-Mow-May] “

Buffalo lawmakers are “encouraging residents to do as a way to get them involved in environmental conservation efforts and create a more pollinator-friendly envi-

Glendora Vegeterian Club

You know, folks, I’ve been telling my contemporaries to stop eating meat. They did not. They are all now horizontal, and here I stand vertically, all alone. Why? Veganism!

Again, folks, what is “vegan”? A vegan is a person who will not eat animals, wear animals, exploit or steal the graces God has given them, such as fur, honey, or bones. A vegan believes you extend the kindness you show other human beings to the members of the animal kingdom. Some may ask “Why should we treat an animal with behavior that we frequently don’t even offer to all humans?” To that, I encourage you to think of and then practice expanding and increasing your positive behavior and feelings towards others, rather than limiting and restricting. Your capability for kindness is infinite!

Pray for me, folks. I recently finished making my 14,000th TV show!

Some jokes:

1. What do you call somebody who does not get angry? A nomad.

2. When I was little, I was worried about my pigeon toes. Now the concern is my crow’s feet.

3. I have to give away my

computer, my smartphone, and my digital camera. The Bible says “You shall have no other icons before thee.”

4. This couple went out and bought a new computer. Their son works for a high tech company along Route 128 in Boston. When he came home for the weekend, he looked at the new computer and said to them, “Where did you get this old thing?”

Ask Google, “Who is Glendora Buell?” and “Who is Glendora Folsom?” and “Who is Glendora Folsom Buell?”

ronment. The goal is to preserve habitat and food sources for bees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators that are necessary to produce apples, grapes, pumpkins and other crops [BuffaloNews.com / Feb. 26, 2023].”

Officials in the Town of New Paltz are asking residents to avoid mowing their lawns in the month of May to help create habits for pollinators and other wildlife [hudsonvalleycountry.com].

No Mow May started abroad and came to Wisconsin in 2020. Per the Daily Gazette, “In Appleton, WI where 435 households participated in 2020, lawns not mowed saw five times as many bees and three times as many bee species, according to research compiled by Lawrence University scientists [Daily Gazette / April 30, 2022].”

Call to reserve your dinners, because we will sell out that day!! Call Dean at 518-322-0826

We rely on bees and other pollinators to pollinate 100 crops species that feed 90% of the world. Steep declines in insect populations affect our food production. Per the BBC, without bees “Our supermarkets would have half the amount of fruit and vegetables [BBC.com].” We protect pollinator food supplies & habitat, so we can sustain our own food supply.

RAs say the job can be demanding and time-consuming, given the various issues students may face during the year.

“We act as a support system for students,” said Francie Wharton, a Skidmore sophomore and RA. “We are the people that the school encourages people to turn to when they are having troubles.”

They have even been thrust into the middle of conflicts between roommates. Occasionally, those can spark legal threats, such as the complaints that roommates are undressing in plain view — which could be seen as a form of sexual harassment under federal nondiscrim-

“Our biggest thing is being available to residents,” said Carlton Berthold, an RPI sophomore and RA.

And they’d also like to request dorm assignments.

Summer Tennis Camp for Young Beginners!

SHAC’s Joe Behson, a USTA and USPTA Developmental Tennis Coach, along with a group of teenage Averill Park tennis players, will lead a summer tennis camp for young beginners July 10th-July 20th, Monday-Thursday each week from 9am12:30pm.

The camp will include a variety of fun, group learning activities geared towards elementary school children (ages 8-12). Enrolled students will learn key tennis concepts, such as the rules of the game while also developing proper racquet handling skills such as the forehand, backhand, return of serve, and volley as well. Understanding the

fundamentals of tennis by working together and demonstrating good sportsmanship will be greatly encouraged.

The tennis camp will take place at the Averill Park High School Tennis courts (located on the right side of the school towards the back).

In the event of inclement weather, the camp will be held at the indoor court inside the SHAC Center at 27 Lake Avenue, Averill Park, NY. Campers should bring snacks and chilled water with them daily. All campers will receive a SHAC Tennis Camp tee shirt.

* Note: Players of this age will progress best with junior tennis racquets. Junior racquets are shorter, lighter, and have smaller grip sizes ideally suited for children.

Adult racquets are often difficult for elementary school children to handle. Parents are encouraged to provide junior racquets but instructor will have a number of junior racquets available for player use if that is necessary. For additional information, you may email Coach Joe at jbehson@nycap. rr.com

Mary Krenceski

Named Adult Educator of the Year

Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County’s longtime volunteer, Mary Krenceski, has been named Adult Educator of the Year by the New York Association for Continuing and Community Education (NYACCE). The award was handed out at the NYACCE Conference at the Marriott Hotel on Wolf Road in Albany, N.Y. on April 20, 2023.

Mary has been tireless in her efforts to instruct and advocate for both English language learners and basic literacy learners since she joined Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (LVORC) as a volunteer tutor in 2001. According to LVORC’s Executive Director, Nancy Benz, “Mary is a treasure! She always gives 100 percent, whether she’s instructing English language learners in the workplace literacy program hosted by Blasch Precision Ceramics, leading the financial literacy program at the YWCA, or tutoring her individual basic literacy student.”

Mary is also an indispensable member of LVORC’s corps of volunteer tutor trainers, providing in-person and online training to new tutors. She can be seen modeling BLL group instruction as part of Literacy New York’s Intake to Outcomes (I2O) online training. Mary has a particular skill for translating her many years of lived experience as a tutor and group instructor into solid practical guidance for volunteers.

When Mary isn’t tutoring or training, she’s conducting intake interviews with students, and testing in TABE and BEST Plus. Most recently she has been helping to establish LVORC’s program for

English language learners at the Refugee Welcome Center and at New Hope Church in Albany, N.Y.
