SCHODACK — River channels filled in decades ago at Schodack Island State Park will be restored under a project coordinated by two state agencies.

The re-creation of nearly 3 acres of natural habitat would lead to environmental, recreation and cultural benefits, as well as flood resiliency, the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Department of Environmental Conservation say. Project design and construction would be supported by

$1.84 million in environmental mitigation funds.

A state parks study completed in February at the 1,052-acre site on the river’s eastern shore in Rensselaer County suggested re-creating several former channels on the island that once connected Schodack Creek, an important spawning ground for native fish, to the Hudson River. The channels were filled in during the early 20th century with materials dredged from the river bottom during construction of the commercial navigation channel.

Though diminished, Schodack Creek is still a major nursery and feeding area for American shad, white perch, alewife, blueback herring and black bass. Historical records show that the river, creek and side channels supported robust populations of those species and the endangered Atlantic and shortnose sturgeon, before the navigational channel was created.

State Parks staff is also studying potential wetland restoration projects on the island that could help the green-backed heron, mallard, black duck, spotted sandpiper, American woodcock,

marsh wren and swamp sparrow.

The project would also make the infrastructure more resilient to flooding and may provide more water storage capacity during flooding events, which climate change could exacerbate. Kayaking and fishing opportunities would be improved.

Schodack Island also has cultural connections to Indigenous nations and is still the traditional homeland of the Mohican people, the agencies said. It was a central location for their community and it is where they kept their council fire, which has since moved to Wisconsin. The Stockbridge-Munsee have a nearby Tribal Historic Preservation Office and continue to maintain strong ties with this area.

The park has a campground with 66 campsites, picnic tables, 8 miles of trails, biking, fishing and hunting. Winter recreation trails are also maintained. More than 200,00 people visit the park each year.

ALBANY — Raiders, Warriors and other school team names that once referred to indigenous people must go, an advisory group has decided.

The group, which was assembled by the state Education Department, had been tasked with reviewing questions from school districts that wanted an exception to the ban on mascots and team names that refer to indigenous people. The Board of Regents is expected to vote on the ban at its April 17 meeting, and districts began sending in arguments for exceptions early this year.

Among the most common requests were to let a district call its team warriors, raiders or red raiders after they replaced indigenous images with a different image. Those were rejected, committee members said. Their recommendations will be considered by the state Education Department, which will make the final determination.

If upheld, the decision will affect several local school districts. Lake George changed its mascot image but kept the nickname Warriors.

South Colonie changed its image but kept Garnet Raiders, and Mechanicville changed its image to an “M” but kept Red Raiders. Niskayuna’s team is the Silver Warriors.

Others will have to change both: Averill Park’s mascot is a Warrior with the image of a spear and feather. Officials there said they would act once they received a definitive ruling on the word “warrior.”

Stillwater, which has a similar mascot (a Warrior with the image of an indigenous person wearing a feather headdress), is already replacing theirs. Several other districts, including Corinth and Glens Falls, are well on their way to selecting new mascots.

South Colonie’s “Garnet Raiders”

Students in South Colonie petitioned in 2020 to replace their district’s logo of an indigenous person on horseback. South Colonie officials said it had not been used on district materials in decades, though some Facebook photos showed the image on school shirts, and said they had no plans to change the team name, the Garnet Raiders.

Greenbush Historical Society Presents “Fun On Two Wheels: A Short History of the Bicycle”

Plan to join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, April 16, 2 PM, at the East Greenbush Community Library.

Our speaker is David Chinery who will present a short history of bicycles dating from 1815 to 1900. The bicycle is an incredibly simple machine by today’s standards but it took a long time to develop. Bicycles in use during this period include the draisine, the velocipede, the boneshaker, the high wheel, and the safety bicycle.

Looking for Volunteers

Community Caregivers, a nonprofit agency, has continued to expand in Rensselaer County! We have over 50 clients but not enough volunteers to serve all of these nice people.

Are you looking to help someone in your community remain living independently with a little assistance from you? We need your help! Our volunteers can take someone to the doctors, grocery or other errands as well as visiting and calling. We have a simple orientation process.

Call Heidi Buono, Rensselaer County Service Coordinator, at (518)925-8794 or Izzy Abrams at (518) 456-2898 to receive information on volunteering. We have paired with AmeriCorps to provide older volunteers with stipends based on their income and hours. To learn more or donate to our agency, see Community Caregivers.org.

the Board of Regents, district officials expect the state will send out answers to many common questions.

“Once these answers are provided, we will set up a community forum to respond to questions, create a stakeholder committee, and discuss a plan moving forward,” the district said.

Mohonasen

The committee was not asked to make a decision about Mohonasen’s school name — which is a combination of Mohawk, Onondaga and Seneca, in reference to three groups that lived in the area where the school district is now. The state Education Department has said it is focusing only on team names and mascots — not names of school districts or school buildings.

CONTINUED FROM 1

When informed of the committee’s decision Friday, they said they would not comment until they had been officially informed.

The Education Department’s advisory committee members said many school districts tried to argue that they had dropped images related to indigenous people and thus could keep the team name. One committee member called that an “evasion” and said all such claims were summarily rejected.

“They use caricatures of Native people and all of a sudden change it to a Viking or a Greek warrior. The historical background speaks for itself,” one member said. The man, an indigenous chief and a lawyer, asked not to be identified by name because he was worried about negative reactions from vehement sports fans.

“Don’t make us out to be targets. Some of these people are vociferous,” he said.

He was glad to help get rid of the team names and images, saying he had protested such names for decades. But the committee, made up of indigenous people, was essentially asked to take the blame for saying no to school districts. It left him feeling both empowered and a bit like a scapegoat, he said.

Still, he took the opportunity to explain why these names and images shouldn’t be used.

“The committee doesn’t like the word ‘Raider’ because it has a certain characterization” with criminal and murderous behavior, he said.

But the state advisory committee member said Mohonasen was not an example of a respectful name.

“Now you just cut off pieces of it, slice it up into a fictitious community and that’s supposed to honor things?” he said. “It’s even worse.”

Mohonasen school officials did not respond to a request for comment on that. They said they had not asked to keep their team name — warriors — or their mascot, which is an image of three images of indigenous people. Previously, Superintendent Shannon Shine defended that image.

“While we do not have a Native American mascot or any caricatured images of Native Americans, we do have our logo depicting three Native Americans from the three tribes that our name, Mohonasen, is made up of: Mohawk, Onondaga and Seneca, all members of the Iroquois Confederacy,” he said.

They will consider all options after the state issues the final decision, a spokesman said.

“The whole process of (indigenous) mascots is to denigrate the Native community, as if they do not exist except in these characterizations,” he said.

What school districts have done, he said, was to stereotype indigenous people, act like they were exterminated, and then suggest that using the stereotyped images and phrases would teach “the revering of an exterminated group.”

“Not going to happen,” he said grimly.

But discussing the matter with school officials has proved futile, he added.

“We did the logical thing and said, ‘This is inappropriate,’” he said of various mascots. “You can’t reason logically with the arguments that are being made. … You’re wading into a mudhole.”

So they simply rejected them, he said.

They are expecting some of the districts to go to court next, he added.

Fonda-Fultonville

The Fonda-Fultonville district in Montgomery County said Wednesday the committee notified it that its request to keep the “Braves” mascot name had been rejected.

“As a school community, we have followed the guidelines and procedures set forth by the New York State Education Department and have attempted to do everything possible to retain the name Braves. The district has asked if there is another path for approval and we have been informed that the Advisory Panel is the governing body that issues the final decision,” the district said in a statement.

REAL ESTATE / HOUSE OF THE WEEK

225 Mitchell Street, Hillsdale

This home in Hillsdale contains four bedrooms and three bathrooms in more than 3,300 square feet. Sleek, sophisticated and inconspicuous, this week’s Scandinavian-style house features more than 3,300 square feet of modern living space on an 8-plus-acre private lot in Hillsdale. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom house was designed and manufactured in Finland and is what’s dubbed a Passive House, or a highly energy efficient and sustainable structure. The goal is to rely more on nature to warm and heat the house than mechanical systems.

Inside, the solar-powered floor-to-ceiling windows and door offer sweeping views of the Mediterranean-blue saltwater pool and eastern Columbia County. A Chesney’s castiron wood-burning stove, imported from England, anchors the light-filled living

room and well-appointed contemporary kitchen, book-ended by the primary suite and one guest bedroom. Two more bedrooms and the media room can be found on the elegant, ebony-daubed lower level. List price: $1,850,000. Taxes: $15,651. To learn more, contact David DiMauro with Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty at 518-755-3973.

Author Min Jin Lee

Visits HVCC

on April 13

National Book Award

finalist Min Jin Lee, a prolific essayist and the author of two, acclaimed novels, visits Hudson Valley Community College on Thursday, April 13, to discuss her writing and rising career.

Beginning at 11 a.m. in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center Auditorium on the Troy campus, the event will include time for audience questions and a book signing. It is free to the public.

Min Jin Lee’s fiction explores the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, religion, gender and identity of displaced people. Her second novel, “Pachinko” is an epic story that follows four generations of a Korean family that migrates to Japan in the early 1900s. It was a finalist for the National Book Award and one of the New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2017. The 2022 Manhae Grand Prize for Literature, named for the 20th-century South Korean Buddhist reformer and poet, is one of her

many literary awards. Her short works and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, NPR’s Selected Shorts, One Story, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine and Book Review, The Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian, Condé Nast Traveler, The Times of London, Food & Wine, Vogue and The Wall Street Journal.

Lee earned fiction fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study at Harvard, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

She studied history at Yale College, law at Georgetown University, and practiced law for two years before turning to writing.

Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea and immigrated to Queens with her family when she was seven years old. She currently teaches fiction and essay writing at Amherst College and lives in New York City.

The April 13 event is presented by the Cultural Affairs Program in collaboration with the English, Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language Department. For

Aviary damaged, eagles unharmed

GRAFTON — The Berkshire Bird Paradise’s two bald eagles escaped harm when three feet of heavy, wet snow severely damaged their new home in last week’s storm.

“We lost our eagle enclosure. It was a big project,” Peter Dubacher, founder of the bird sanctuary nearly 50 years ago, said Wednesday about the wrecked structure.

The eagles, nonetheless, stayed put and rode out the storm of March 14-15 in their damaged enclosure. While the aviary wasn’t lucky, the eagles definitely were — and were rescued, Dubacher said.

The Berkshire Bird Paradise has set up a GoFundMe account entitled “Help the sanctuary rebuild!” Not only does the eagle aviary need to be fixed, but major repairs are required for a 5,600-square-foot greenhouse and two smaller greenhouses. Dubacher estimates that one-third of the large greenhouse is damaged.

“We’re going to rebuild it,” Dubacher said.

While there is structural damage, none of the sanctuary’s 500 birds were harmed by the storm, Dubacher said.

The GoFundMe site was set up by Liz Dubacher, who works

with her father at the 20-acre property at 43 Red Pond Road in rural Rensselaer County. Their goal is to raise $5,000 to help with the repair costs.

“My goal is to protect what he’s created and maintain this,” Dubacher said, regarding her father’s work over the decades.

“We’re trying to get as much support as we can,” she added.

The higher costs of building materials have the father-and-daughter team considering how to proceed. They’re confident that they can recover from the snowfall. They’re seeing an outpouring of support from the surrounding community and promises to help with the work once it begins later this spring.

“I am so proud of my fellow brothers and sisters who live in Grafton and Petersburgh and East Greenbush and surrounding areas. So many people have called and so many people have said ‘I’m going to come up when you get ready to rebuild it. We’re going to help you.’ That is a sign of true love,” said Peter Dubacher.

The lingering snow cover has the Dubachers wondering what else they may discover on the property in the storm’s aftermath.

Liz Dubacher said the snow is slowly retreating up in the higher elevations where Berkshire Bird Paradise is situated. “Now,” Dubacher said, “we’re waiting for the snow to melt.”

Daily Gazette buys newspapers, website

Johnson Newspapers selling Hudson Register-Star, Catskill Daily Mail

SCHENECTADY — The Daily Gazette is poised to purchase the Hudson Register-Star and Catskill Daily Mail with the deal closing as soon as May 1, according to an internal memo obtained by the Times Union.

The papers “are in a pending sale status to the Schenectady Gazette and we look to close that sale by May 1, 2023,” Johnson Newspaper Corp. executive Gary Valick said in a March 22 communication the chain’s staff.

Based in Watertown, Johnson owns and operates the Daily Mail and Register-Star as well as an affiliated website, Hudson Valley 360, which is also being sold to the Gazette. Gazette Publisher John DeAugustine confirmed the pending sale, but he wasn’t sure of a specific date for transfer of the properties.

“We have a couple of hurdles we’ve got to jump over,” DeAugustine said, explaining that lawyers involved in the sale are still ironing out details.

He added that he is looking to complete the sale “as soon as possible.”

DeAugustine said the Gazette planned to keep the newspapers’ offices in the region; the purchase provides an opportunity to expand its coverage area into Greene and Columbia counties.

Both counties are growing quickly, in part due to an exodus of people from New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.

DeAugustine — who declined to reveal the purchase price for the papers — said he has in the past spoken to Johnson about an acquisition but the company reached out to him looking to sell during the fourth quarter of last year.

It was unclear if all of the Daily Mail and Register-Star employees would remain after the purchase was finalized.

“I have to get into exactly what staff is down there,” said DeAugustine. “They don’t have a ton of staff down there.”

He said the Catskill and Hudson papers would be printed at the Gazette’s press operation in Schenectady.

Valick’s March 22 memo also noted that the family-owned Johnson Newspapers — whose flagship property is the Watertown Daily Times — had last week announced the sale of its Batavia and Oswego newspapers to Sample News Co. Owned by George

These bald eagles at Berkshire Bird Paradise lost their aviary to the weight of three feet of heavy wet snow from the March 14-15 storm.

Sample, that company owns a string of newspapers in New England, upstate New York and Pennsylvania.

Valick’s memo noted that the chain’s costs had become two times as high as revenues.

“As we came out of the pandemic and experienced rising costs in transportation services, raw materials, energy, newspaper print, and health care the corporation experienced very tight cash flow in 2022,” he wrote. “Revenues brought into the company were exceeded by twice the cost.

At the end of the year, Alec (Johnson, the chain’s president), the board and I knew that to strengthen the corporation changes needed to be made and be made fast.”

The Times Union in November reported that the Register-Star’s owner was being sued in Hudson for what its landlord said was more than $116,000 in back and current rent.

Since 2020, the Gazette has purchased several papers on the western edge of its coverage area: the Amsterdam Recorder, the weekly Courier-Standard-Enterprise and Fulton County Express, as well as the Gloversville Leader-Herald.

Catskill in Greene County and Hudson in Columbia County represent a move toward the south and east for the Gazette’s coverage.

The Times Union also sought in recent years to expand its coverage area through the creation of a Hudson Valley team, though the paper has done so without acquiring existing properties.
