Town of North Greenbush Easter Egg Hunt

WYNANTSKILL - Did “some-bunny” say Easter Egg Hunt? Supervisor Joe Bott is happy to announce the Town of North Greenbush Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at 10:00 am at Town Hall, 2 Douglas Street in Wynantskill.

The field will be filled with delicious treats and decorative eggs. Children please bring your baskets and hop on over for an “eggtastic” time and be ready for some fun! This annual tradition has seen thousands of children over the years come to celebrate Spring and visit with the Easter Bunny.

TROY - Rensselaer County plans to spend $10.2 million to buy and renovate the Rose & Kiernan building on Route 4 in East Greenbush to house its administrative offices, which will relocate with 300 employees from Seventh Avenue, county officials said last Wednesday.

County Executive Steve McLaughlin outlined a sweeping relocation of operations among county buildings in Troy and the move to East Greenbush in his State of the County address to the legislature Tuesday night, which was attended by about 100 people.

“I am introducing the Reimagine Rensselaer County Facilities effort, a plan that will place the majority of county services on county-owned property and expand access, convenience and service for the residents we serve and the employees who assist in that mission,” McLaughlin, a Republican, told the county legislators.

The proposal calls for reshuffling county departments among three locations. The county executive offices and other county departments will move to the insurance company building at 99 Route 4 (also called Troy Road) from the five-story county building at 1600 Seventh Ave. and the adjacent Health Building.

Councilman Jack Rogers Reports to the Town of North Greenbush

The Town Clerk’s office would like to let all North Greenbush residents who are receiving or renewing a Permanent or Temporary Parking Permit of the new changes in the process of obtaining a (handicap) tag. You will now need to bring your driver’s license or non-driver’s license with you to obtain your tag.

We will now place the last 3 digits of your license’s number on all tags you receive. If you should have any questions on this process, please do not hesistate to call the office @ 518-283-4306, Monday thru Friday between the hours of 8:00 am - 4:00 pm and I will be happy to assist you in any way that I can.

The Town Board approved resolutions appointing a new town court secretary and accepted a Justice Court grant. This grant will allow for an update in the court entrance, security system, and court equipment.

A new police vehicle along with required equipment was approved in order to replace an older vehicle.

A resolution was approved accepting grant funding from the federal government, The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The Town of North Greenbush will use these funds in the following areas: • Town Park Improvements

A Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) permit was obtained and clean up of the Wynantskill Creek was performed in order to clear the creek of debris and trees to improve water flow.

Environment – The Minority Office submitted a resolution supporting the NYS Expanded Bottle Bill (A8668), which was first introduced 40 years ago, to include additional beverage containers, such as sports drinks, iced teas, wine and liquor, as well as dairy products. The resolution was rejected by the Republican Majority.

The Bottle Bill has had a tremendous and positive effect on the environment and modernizing and expanding the Bottle Bill will further reduce litter, increase recycling rates, reduce carbon emission and bring jobs to NYS. Opioid Settlement – After declaring the opioid epidemic a public health crisis in 2018, Rensselaer County in concert with other Counties initiated a lawsuit against three

mission improvements, highway and drainage mitigation, emergency services funding for our ambulance and fire companies, town employee funding and facility safety improvements. The town has been working to keep our waterways clear, doing all we can to mitigate potential flooding by obtaining a permit to clear trees and other debris from the creek.

We recognized March as colorectal cancer awareness month. Planning is underway for the annual Memorial Day Parade which is gearing up to be the biggest one yet. Stay tuned for details.

AROUND YOUR COMMUNITY News From Averill Park CSD Algonquin Middle School held its second annual Warrior Wellness Day recently. This event is focused on providing students with opportunities to explore topics and techniques that promote physical and emotional well-being. Averill Park High School science teacher Chris Reddy delivered the Keynote speech on the importance of sleep to the growing teenage brain. Breakout sessions included topics such as yoga, meditation, bucket drumming, community service, dance and movement, writing, mental health, healthy relationships, chess, board games, cursive writing, art making, crafting, cooking, college planning, open mic, karaoke, functional fitness, allyship for peers, nature hikes, knitting and much more.

After two years of having large indoor events canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Averill Park High School band returned to the stage to perform its first full, in-person concert in the auditorium. Great job on an amazing performance everyone!

Hoosick Area Senior Bus Trip Announced The Hoosick Area Seniors have planned an over-night bus trip April 6-7, 2022 to Newport, RI. Day 1 will include the Newport Dinner Theater and Cabaret. This will include a great buffet, the comedy play “A Carol Burnett Show”, and a funfilled cabaret. Following the cabaret, there will a guided bus tour of the area. Hello Warrior Fans! Our girls basketball team continues to dominate as they reach closer to a state championship.

The girls faced Massena on 3/8 in the Class A Sub-Regional in SUNY-Canton, where they won 66-27.

Amelia Wood once again led the girls in scoring with 17 points. Taylor Holohan scored 16 points while Michelina Lombardi added 10. The basketball team traveled to Syracuse on 3/12 for the Class A regional finals. They defeated Bishop-Ludden 67-43 to take home the Regional Championship led by Amelia Woods 22 points. Taylor Holohan also scored 11 while Tatiana Tune and Arianna Verardi each scored 10.

The girls basketball team will now advance to the state final four at Hudson Valley on 3/18, where they will face West Babylon high school. Congrats to the girls basketball team on the amazing run they are on right now!

The Anchor Food Pantry, located behind the Riverside Nursing Home in Castleton, provides food and supplies to residents of southern Rensselaer County all year round.

Poestenkill ARPA Federal Funds Public Meetings POESTENKILL Poestenkill has received $230,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act fiscal recovery funds, some of which has been used for the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and the highway department. An additional $230,000 is anticipated later this year.

This is a lot of money for a small town. It needs to be used town-wide, fairly, sensibly, and responsibly. Although deciding how to allocate the funds is ultimately the Town Board’s responsibility, the community’s thoughts and views are really important.

Decisions on how best to use those funds will be made after hearing from Town residents through a series of public meetings to solicit suggestions. The goal is to make sure that this money is used in a way that has a lasting impact.

Poestenkill Supervisor Keith Hammond has formed a team of three residents to hold listening sessions to understand and keep track of everyone’s suggestions. The listening sessions are just that, to learn what is on the minds of the Poestenkill community.

At the completion of the sessions a detailed summary of the residents’ suggestions will be presented to the Town Board

for their consideration; it will also be posted on the Town’s website.

The information gathering sessions are scheduled at: * First Baptist Church, 12 Legenbauer Rd, East Poestenkill, Saturday, March 26th, 10 AM * Evangelical Lutheran Church, 772 Round Top Road, Poestenkill, Tuesday, March 29th, 7 PM New York State COVID safety requirements for public meetings will be strictly followed.

Grafton Senior Center News CROPSEYVILLE Rensselaer County’s Everett Wagar Senior Center, 2 Roxborough Rd, Cropseyville, will be open with limited hours. State and County Guidelines will be posted and must be followed at all times.

The center is now open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 3:00 with congregate lunch and activities. Mondays and Fridays the center will be open 9:00 to 11:00 for our 10:00 Chair Yoga class.

This is a low impact class that all senior citizens can do.

TAKE A CLEAR STAND THAT DOMESTIC ABUSE IS NOT A “PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER.”: One in three women and one in four men will be a victim of severe physical violence at some point in their lifetime. Each day, an average of three women die at the hands of someone who claims or claimed to love them. Every abused person is someone’s sibling, parent, friend or co-worker.

If the victim is in immediate danger, call 911. Support your community by volunteering or donating to the DV agencies.

CONFRONT THE OFFENDERS: If it is safe, tell them that their abusive behavior is unacceptable. Impose social consequences like not welcoming for family dinner or to hang out, until they stop their abusive behavior.

Study ‘bystander intervention training’ on YouTube and put it into practice.

EDUCATE THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH about healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships. It is some of today’s children who will become tomorrow’s abusers and victims. Discuss DV at the family table and encourage everyone to respectfully speak up without fear when something doesn’t feel right. Set a healthy example by not using coercive measures to control your children’s’ behavior under any circumstance. Be respectful to everyone, irrespective of their age and sex. Losing your ‘cool ‘, is a big “No,’. If parents have difficulty managing their emotions, they need to seek help.

COMMUNITY LEVEL CHALLENGE THE WIDELY-HELD MYTHS ABOUT DV AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY: That ‘DV’ means only physical violence’, it’s a “private family matter’, ‘the victim is weak’ and the victims can “just leave”. In reality, the woman is at the greatest risk of being hurt or even killed when trying to leave or after leaving. She has to carefully plan her escape, to protect herself, her children and pets and ensure financial security.

CHALLENGE THE MYTH THAT THE ABUSERS “LOSE CONTROL”: Not true. They don’t “lose control” at work, with friends and other family members! Abuse is a conscious choice rooted in power and control over the partner. Challenge the inequalities and ‘isms’ like sexism, racism, classism and patriarchy on which DV thrives.

GIVE SUSTAINED PUBLICITY TO THE DV HOTLINE NUMBERS through all the media until they are as well-known as ‘911’. Make sure DV brochures are always visible at public places like libraries, town halls, workplaces, doctor’s offices, religious places and community centers.

ORGANIZE DV AWARENESS CAMPAIGN EVERY OCTOBER. DV agencies can provide the publicity posters, brochures and speakers.

HEALTHY LIVING When Women Should Be Screened for Various Conditions and Diseases Preventive care is a key component of an effective health care regimen. Preventive care is not a one-sizefits-all approach, as various factors will influence what an individual should be doing at any given moment to ensure his or her overall health. Age, medical history and family history are three factors that could influence a preventive care regimen. Gender is another variable that affects preventive care, and women should know that screening guidelines for various conditions and diseases could be different for them than they are for men. Women’s personal medical histories could affect how often they should be screened for various conditions, but these screening recommendations from the United States Preventive Services Task Force can serve as a guideline for women.

• Blood pressure: Blood pressure should be checked at least once every two years if women are considered to be in a healthy range (under 120/80) or annually if they are above normal (between 120/80 and 139/89).

• Bone density: Women should get a bone density test at least once upon turning 65. Women younger than 65 can speak with their physicians if they want the test.

• Breast cancer: The USPSTF recommends women between the ages of 50 and 74 schedule a mammogram every two years. Women 75 and older can discuss if the test is still necessary after age 74.

• Cervical cancer: Women between the ages of 21 and 65 who have a cervix should receive a Pap test every three years. Upon turning 30, a Pap test and an HPV test every five years is an option. Women over 65 can discuss if they need to continue receiving a Pap test with their physicians.

• Colorectal cancer: Screening for colorectal cancer is recommended for women between the ages of 50 and 75.

Women can discuss which test to get with their physicians, who also can inform them what to do after turning 75.

• Diabetes: Women whose blood pressure is higher than 135/80 should be tested for diabetes. Women who take medication for high blood pressure also should be tested.

• HIV/AIDS: Women should be tested for HIV/AIDS at least once after age 20 or earlier if they are high risk for HIV. • Lipid profile: The USPSTF recommends a routine lipid profile starting at age 20 for women who are at increased risk for heart disease.

• Lung cancer: Women with a history of smoking should receive annual testing with low-dose computed tomography between ages 55 and 80. This includes women who have quit smoking within the last 15 years.

Colonoscopies look for pre-cancer, such as abnormal cells or polyps. However, there are other preventative strategies as well.

• Genetic counseling: Genetic counseling reviews family history to check for medical issues that may lead to cancer outcomes. Patients can take proactive steps if there is a genetic cancer link.

• Become more active. The American Cancer Society advises that being overweight or obese increases risk of colorectal cancer in both genders. Increasing physical activity can help reduce weight, but also may lower risk of polyps in the colon.

OPINION OPINION What Putin Knew

There are forgivable intellectual and policy errors, and then there's the self-delusion that has driven the West into its dependence on Vladimir Putin's oil and gas.

Russia has long been a major supplier of energy to Europe. The depletion of European natural gas reserves has played a role in Russia's increased significance. Moscow has also benefited, though, from a deliberate choice by Europe to attempt a great leap forward into a green-energy future, especially in a Germany that turned its back on both nuclear and coal.

In taking this route, Europe made a holiday-from-history decision to forget the incredible power of oil, gas and coal -- the most reliable and efficient sources of energy the world has ever known -- and ignore the inevitable centrality of energy to geopolitics.

Greta Thunberg, the teenage climate activist who has been elevated into an oracle of all that is good and true, demanded nothing less.

No matter what you've heard, the world hasn't embraced fossil fuels out of hatred of the planet, rather because they are so incredibly useful. If they didn't already exist -- thanks to sunlight and plants that lived millions of years ago -- we would have to invent them and wouldn't be able to.

Oil is a miracle fuel. Alex Epstein of the Center for Industrial Progress writes that it is "almost eerily engineered by natural processes, not just for cheapness, not just for reliability, not just for scalability, but also for another characteristic crucial to a functional civilization: portability." It powers cars, trucks and jets, without which the modern world as we know it wouldn't exist.

Coal, too, Epstein notes, is affordable, abundant and easy to extract and transport. There is a reason that developing nations invariably use it to power their economic advancement.

So, it's not surprising that fossil fuels are still the leading source of global electricity, with coal accounting for 36.7% and gas 23.5%.

The total fossil fuel contribution, at 63.3%, is down only slightly from two decades ago.

In terms of overall energy, fossil fuels are an even larger proportion, 84.3%.

For its part, green energy -- wind, solar and other renewables -account for around 10% of global electricity, and even less of total energy.

Vladimir Putin knew this and understood the power it gave him, even if European policymakers couldn't be bothered to think a tiny bit strategically.

Did they not notice that coal was the mainstay of Britain's rise to global power in the 19th century?

Did they forget the role of oil in World War I and World War II, let alone subsequent 20th-century history?

Petroleum wasn't particularly useful prior to World War I and, by the end of it, had become a pillar of national power. It fueled the motorized vehicles and airplanes that transformed warfare. British foreign minister Lord Curzon famously said at the war's conclusion that the Allies had "floated to victory upon a wave of oil."

In World War II, the Japanese attacked the United States in part for fear that the American de facto oil embargo would starve its war machine, and one reason the Nazis were defeated was that they ran out of fuel.

Of course, the strategic significance of the Middle East owed almost entirely to its vast oil reserves. The phrase "war for oil" is a cliche and usually a smear, but it is certainly true that no one has ever fought a war for wind.

In light of all of this, Europe still choose to subjugate itself to an anti-Western authoritarian and, even as Russian opera stars are getting canceled, it hasn't ceased purchases of Russian oil and gas.

Some perspective is necessary. While climate change may indeed prove a serious long-term challenge, it is not reducing parts of European cities to rubble or a threat to use a tactical nuclear weapon.

If this horrifying episode hasn't scared the West straight on energy, nothing will.

How the Supreme Court's Gerrymandering Ruling Vindicated the Wisdom of John Roberts

(c) 2022, The Washington Post Where does Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. go to get his apology? His 2019 opinion that federal courts should stay out of partisan state gerrymandering battles was denounced at the time as an "abdication" (Justice Elena Kagan) and a sop to "big Republican donor interests" (Sheldon Whitehouse, a Democratic senator from Rhode Island).

More recently, President Joe Biden's Supreme Court commission cited Roberts's ruling as evidence for the view that the court's conservative majority is "complicit in and partially responsible for the 'degradation of American democracy' writ large."

But as the first redistricting cycle after Rucho v. Common Cause comes to a close, it's apparent that the critics were mostly wrong about the decision's effects. New district lines are making the House of Representatives more progressive. "In 2020 the median district was biased against Joe Biden by two points," the Economist reported last month. "But in 2022 . . . this bias is almost certain to be much closer to zero."

Rucho is one of the reasons. With federal courts' power over redistricting curtailed, three divided state supreme courts in the past year jumped in to overrule GOP gerrymanders - in Ohio (with a total of 15 seats), Pennsylvania (17 seats) and North Carolina (14 seats). Republicans in state legislatures objected, but on Monday, March 7th the U.S. Supreme Court closed the book on the issue, at least for the 2022 election, by refusing to hear an appeal from the North Carolina GOP. Meanwhile, state supreme courts have so far not struck down aggressive Democratic gerrymanders in deep-blue states such as Oregon (six seats), Illinois (17 seats) or New York (26 seats).

And because of Rucho's holding that partisan gerrymandering is a non justiciable "political question," Republicans in those states have little recourse in the federal courts.

So much for the big donor interests. Republicans were expected to dominate the redistricting process because they fully control 24 state legislatures to the Democrats' 14 - but that calculus didn't take into account the way judicial politics on state courts could net Democrats about a half-dozen House seats.

This reversal of partisan fortunes may be surprising to the law professors and activists who were certain that Rucho was a Republican power grab. But it's probably less surprising to the chief justice. Roberts was clear in the ruling that despite the Supreme Court's hands-off approach, the legislative temptation to gerrymander could be constrained. State constitutions, for example, "can provide standards and guidance for state courts to apply" in reviewing district lines, Roberts wrote. Now, a handful of state courts have done just that.

Put aside the wisdom of individual state court

gerrymandering decisions this cycle, which have had a clear Democratic bias. The fact that state courts are increasingly at the center of a contest over the democratic process is significant, and it could be a model for depolarizing America's political system.

State supreme courts have faded in significance in recent decades, and the justices in Washington correspondingly loom larger and larger. As federal appellate judge Jeffrey Sutton wrote in his 2018 book "51 Imperfect Solutions," we now live "in a top-down constitutional world, in which the U.S. Supreme Court announces a ruling, and the state supreme courts move in lockstep" to follow. The democratic distortions created by the high court's aggrandizement are well known.

Yet the Supreme Court's Rucho decision was an exception. It wisely walled off the justices from the politically explosive gerrymandering wars. That separation created more room for state courts to arrive at their own conclusions about what limits state constitutions place on partisan redistricting. Instead of holding life tenure, state supreme court justices are usually elected, so if voters don't like their gerrymandering decisions, they can throw the judges out (as might happen in North Carolina this year).

It is possible this balance won't last through the next redistricting cycle - and if it doesn't, it will likely be conservatives who upset their own achievement. In the North Carolina case this week, Justices Samuel A. Alito Jr., Neil M. Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas wrote in a dissent that they would likely hold that the Constitution also bars state courts from reviewing a legislature's map.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh said the question merited consideration in the future, and a 2014 redistricting opinion by the chief justice has led to speculation about Roberts's views. Stripping state courts of their power to apply state constitutions to the gerrymandering problem altogether would quash an experiment in state-court pluralism.

There's a lot of loose talk about the Supreme Court's "legitimacy," but that legitimacy is tested most when the justices are called to pass judgment on the most sensitive machinery of democracy - elections. The aftermath of the 2020 election showed the importance of the federal courts as a backstop against subversion. By leaving gerrymandering to state courts and commissions, Rucho fortified the justices' credibility to intervene in the electoral process when no other institution has the authority to do so.

The liberal justices in Rucho (and Democrats in Congress) want to create a federal standard for redistricting, which would marginalize state courts. Now, some conservatives, out of frustration with state-court activism, are tempted to compel all states to comply with a nationwide rule of their own. Let's hope the chief justice finds support on the court for his much-maligned but democratically sound middle way.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Will of the People Imagine, Rensselaer County resident, you vote in the next presidential election. Being from rural upstate New York, you probably voted for the Republican candidate.

The election is close but the Republican narrowly wins, even in New York, whose Electoral College votes provide the national margin of victory. You’re ecstatic—the Republicans are back in control. But wait, the Democrats in control of the NYS legislature don’t like this result.

Instead of certifying the Republican electors chosen by the majority, they certify another set of electors to vote for the Democratic candidate when the Electoral College meets.

They justify this action by using an interpretation of the U.S. Constitution called the “independent legislature” theory, which says that state legislatures have the sole authority to appoint electors in their respective states. So, state legislators choose electors, not voters. This seem contrary to democratic principles like majority rule. Now, your mood has changed to outrage.

How dare those Democrats do such a thing! But it is not Democrats who push this theory—it’s Republicans.

They tried in challenges to the 2020 election, in part by attempts to throw out electors selected by state majorities in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin, replacing them with electors favorable to former Presi-

Two unique trainings will be offered in March. They are open to the public and registration is required for each.

The Soul Shop for Youth Workers training focuses on faith-based and youth-specific suicide prevention techniques and is the first of such training to be held in upstate New York. The Community Awareness Skills Training (CAST) is a community conversation to address how we think and talk about suicide.

Grant said the county may be able to provide some mitigation to make up for the lost property tax income.

McLaughlin said buying the building would be $10 million less than building a new one. The county has projected it would cost $20 million to construct a new office building. When McLaughlin came into office for his first term, he expressed displeasure about the condition of the Seventh Avenue building, which the county has owned since the 1970s and before that was a school building built in the early 20th century.

Not every county agency in the county office building will be relocated. The legislature on the third floor and the county Board of Elections and the County Clerk’s motor vehicle office, both on the first floor, may remain in their current locations.

The facilities plan, McLaughlin said, would bring more modern facilities, the county owning most of its buildings, provide flexibility for future projects and a longterm solution for county office needs.

The efforts stem from the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, or CLCPA, which calls for a carbon-free economy by 2050.

That law requires the state to invest or direct resources to help ensure that disadvantaged communities receive at least 35 percent of the benefits from spending on clean energy and energy efficiency programs.

Those benefits could come in a variety of ways, including job opportunities for people living in disadvantaged communities. Or they could come from enhanced energy-efficiency programs to subsidize insulating or weatherproofing homes.

“Our members will have to pay attention to these (census) maps when developing their programs,” remarked Anne Reynolds, executive director of the state Alliance for Clean Energy, an association of solar, wind and other renewable energy companies.

For instance, a company building an offshore wind project or solar farm, might offer job training in a disadvantaged community or purchase supplies from stores and companies located in those communities.

“It’s not absolutely clear what companies will have to do but it is clear that they will have to steer investment to these communities one way or another,” said Reynolds.

In the Capital Region, for example, the companies planning to build wind towers at an expanded Port of Albany might offer training or apprenticeships from residents of the nearby South End of Albany, which is lower income and has a high number of minority residents.

Parts of the South End also have been challenged by proximity to a rail siding and heavy truck traffic serving the port — yet another factor that helps define a disadvantaged community.

Other working class communities should benefit. “It is both encouraging and important to us the state is looking for opportunities and pathways … to make sure that communities like ours can take advantage of clean energy funding,” said Theresa Bourgeois director of operations for Cohoes. The city has recently been recognized for planning to put floating solar panels in a municipal reservoir. City officials hope the designation as a disadvantaged community will help fund the project.

The disadvantaged community concept is also being embraced by the Biden administration with similar considerations and goals playing a part in the president’s plans to combat climate change.

Those plans, though, were criticized last month as they excluded race as a factor in identifying disadvantaged communities, noted Salter.

Tax break concern Barbara Heinzen, a Capital Region consultant and environmental activist, said she worries that the mantle of helping disadvantaged communities could become an excuse for handing out unneeded tax breaks to businesses.

“I’m skeptical,” said Heinzen.

The village of Ravena, for instance, is listed as a disadvantaged community in the draft map and it’s also the home to the Port of Coeymans.

The port will be constructing platforms for offshore wind turbines, but there is local opposition to the expansion plans there, due to traffic and other concerns.

Heinzen wonders if those concerns could be glossed over by the prospect of bringing jobs to the community.

Thursday marked the beginning of a 120-day public comment period for New Yorkers to provide feedback on the draft before the criteria are finalized.

Well-maintained laws are a byproduct of hard work.

That hard work is a point of pride for homeowners who spend countless hours throughout spring, summer and fall tending to their lawns.

All that hard work can be compromised when uninvited guests, namely insects, show up in a lawn. Insect infestations can turn a normally pristine and lush green lawn into a brown and sickly eyesore. Identifying which type of insect is damaging a lawn is the first step toward returning that lawn to its green glory. These are three common lawn insects and signs that they’re infesting a lawn.

1. Grubs Grubs like to feast on the roots of grass right below the surface. Michigan State University Extention Turf & Landscape reports that grub damage can appear from March to early May or from mid-September to early November. The lawn and garden experts at GardenTech® note that wilted grass blades are often the first indicator of a grub infestation, which is followed by patches of brown turf and eventually death. Crows, skunks and moles eat grubs, so the sight of them in a lawn could indicate an infestation.

2. Chinch bugs The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations

are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September.

That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.

3. Cutworms The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation. Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.

The good news is that grub, chinch bug and cutworm populations can be controlled. Local turf specialists can recommend strategies to curtail such populations and help homeowners restore their lawns to full health.

The National Association of Landscape Professionals notes that lawns can support a significant number of insects feeding on them because the grass grows much faster than the insects can damage it. But noticeable damage, such as brown patches in the grass, severed roots and grass that is easily pulled up, indicate that insect infestations are significant enough to require intervention. Lawn care

professionals can work with homeowners to develop solutions to address insect infestations. Infestation prevention involves a handful of strategies, not the least of which is ensuring a lawn is properly cared for. Such care delivers nutrients to the lawn and reduces its risk of becoming undernourished. Undernourished lawns are more vulnerable to insect infestations and weeds.

Literacy Volunteers Announces 10th Annual Famous Ladies’ Tea TROY - Celebrate Women’s History Month and support literacy programs in Rensselaer County and Albany County at the Famous Ladies’ Tea, Sunday, March 27, 1:00-4:00P.M. Local actresses will portray notable women including Margaret Mead, Emily Dickinson, Inez

Milholland, Anna Howard Shaw, Moms Mabley, Betty White and Phyllis Diller.

The in-person event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, 235 Hoosick Street, Troy, N.Y. A virtual option is available for those who do not wish to attend in person. The Famous Ladies’ Tea will include a raffle, silent auction and wine pull.
