Hippity Hoppity Easter’s on its way! The Town of North Greenbush Youth and Recreation Committee is “hoppy” to announce Peter Cottontail is hoppin’ down the bunny trail right to North Greenbush for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt. No fooling .... it will be held on Saturday, April 1st at 10:00 am at town hall, 2 Douglas Street in Wynantskill.

Children should bring their baskets to collect all of those special treats. We will even have a surprise visit by the bunny who would love to say hi! We hope to have it outside as usual so dress appropriately (for rain we will be inside).

Please call Jessica Merola or Kelly Hoffman at the town supervisor’s office at (518) 283-5313, x5 with any questions. We hope to see you there for this wonderful holiday tradition with our great community.

EAST GREENBUSH — It appears to be a

freshly cleared 6.47-acre lot dotted with tree stumps and small hills of wood chips, but standing in the middle of the field, Pastor Brad Guenther describes the multi-use building that will be the new home of Immanuel Church by Easter in 2024.

The 12,000-square foot church will rise at 4 Onderdonk Ave. off Columbia Turnpike eight years after it was envisioned, allowing Immanuel Church to move from its rented quarters at 1955 Ferndale Road in Schodack.

At a time when people are accustomed to church buildings being shut down and either sold for a new use or standing dormant

awaiting an unknown fate, Immanuel’s congregation is building for the future.

“I want people out driving to see God isn’t done with the area,” Guenther said about seeing the new church springing up between the Greenbush Cemetery to the west and Onderdonk Avenue on the right.

“People can see a church being built and not see a church closing and being turned into other uses.”

The new church may spur a growth in the congregation, Guenther said. From talking to pastors of similar churches, he said he learned that a new house of worship may increase attendance by 25 to 35 percent.

Immanuel Church has Baptist roots. Its congregation has grown to 250 to 300 people worshiping on a Sunday. Previously it had seen about 190 to 200 people regularly attend Sunday services. Guenther said the church has two services so everyone can attend. Even with the new building, he expects to continue holding two services on Sundays.

Even though the church has $3.2 million available to spend on its construction project through donations and loans, Guenter doesn’t want to concentrate on the building, which is designed to handle worship, basketball and other activities.

“It has always been important to us that the building not keep us from doing ministry in the community,” Guenther said.

The church leadership and congregation have reached out to claim a spot in the community that envelops its new location. They’ve volunteered at the historic Greenbush Cemetery that the property borders and are seeking other activities.

Immanuel Church will not be the only house of worship on Columbia Turnpike. Other churches on the highway are St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church and the Congregational Church, not too far to the west on the highway.

Once Immanuel Church gets its final permits from the town of East Greenbush for construction, Guenther said he’s been advised that construction should move ahead fairly rapidly in the next nine to 12 months. He’s eyeing a date for the first services in the new church tied to major holidays on the Christian church calendar.

“I’m hoping for Christmas,” said Guenther, indicating flexibility. “I’m telling the congregation between Christmas and Easter.”

EAST GREENBUSH — Somewhere beneath the acreage that formed the U.S. Army’s Green-bush Cantonment during the War of 1812, are the remains of the executed Private Samuel Helms.

Town Historian Bobbi Reno has turned to Mary Silver of Capital Region GPR to use her sophisticated ground-penetrating radar technology.

“It’s another part of the research for Samuel Helms to locate where he is. It’s a needle in the haystack,” Reno said.

Silver may have found more than one needle.

“I did a preliminary scan. I found four or five locations an archaeologist can go and see what’s going on,” Silver said.

The town of East Greenbush has allocated $1,000 for the search, Reno said. The East Greenbush Central School District has granted its approval for the search around Red Mill Elementary, which is located on the former cantonment site. The athletic fields are where the promising leads have been found.

“All of my research doesn’t support desertion. It proves he went AWOL and was tried on charges before an illegal court martial,” said Reno, seated in her Town Hall office where she pulled out records to back her claim.

A state militia member, Helms went AWOL Oct. 2, 1812. He returned to camp and was placed back on the muster rolls on Oct. 22, 1812. In July 1813, he was ordered tried for desertion. He was convicted and executed by firing squad in late August or early September 1813. He was then buried in an unmarked grave at the cantonment.

Silver said her preliminary sweep found disturbances five or six feet beneath the surface that appeared to have been dug by shovel and then filled with soil. Silver knows her away around cemeteries, having done work at Forest Park Cemetery in Brunswick and locating the grave of Sophie High Dog at Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands.

Supervisor Joe Bott Accepts “Project of the Year” Award

Supervisor Joseph Bott is proud to announce the Town of North Greenbush was awarded the 2022 “Project of the Year” Award from the American Public Works Association for the Route 4 Traffic and Pedestrian Improvement Project.

The prestigious award is given in recognition of the multi-year project and construction of the improvements the town had

identified, planned for and implemented. The award was received for projects between $5m to $25m.

“We made a commitment many years ago to make smart investments in our infrastructure. I am proud to have worked with former Comptroller Anthony Germano on this multi-phased project and thank the residents of the town for their patience while we worked through the construction. We will continue to plan for enhancements to our infrastructure as the town grows,” said Town Supervisor Joe Bott.

Public forums were initially held to gain input from the community and those ideas were put into the concept plan. “We felt our residents needed to have a voice in the plan. These improvements were made to create a more accessible route to travel, improve mobility adding sidewalks for residents to walk and enhance safety at several intersections,” said Deputy Town Supervisor Kelly Hoffman.

First United Methodist Church Storytelling Night

We are people of story. Our traditions, religions, histories, and biographies are compilations of stories told and received, handed down, edited, redacted, metaphorized, dreamed up.

Storytelling Night is a monthly evening of food,

fellowship, and storytelling. We gather monthly around the stories of people. And, we believe that each story - of our fears, of our hopes, of our lives, of our families, of our undoing, of our renaissance, of our redemption - can be inspiring to us and to others . . . but only if that story is shared.

The practice of storytelling (and of story-hearing) is an essential part of being human, and we want to encourage, uplift, facilitate, and gather around the telling and hearing of stories. Join us if you want to share or hear a story!

Please join the Greenbush Historical Society in celebrating Women’s History month on Sunday, March 12 , 2PM, at the East Greenbush Library. Our speaker will be Barbara Urban – historian for the Illium Club which turned 100 years old last fall. However, women across the country were hungry for socialization and self education in the early 20th century. The Illium Club brought to Troy just these things – an opportunity to get together, to be active in the community, and a way for women to further their education. Learn about this active group today on March 12 . All GHS programs are free and open to the public but registration at the library is required. Please call 518 477 7476 to reserve a seat.

Home renovations can improve a home in many different ways. Modifications to kitchens and bathrooms have long been popular projects, but are they the most popular renovations? According to data from Realm, which analyzed the top 10 most popular projects from roughly 2.8 million listings and permit filings in the United States in 2022, certain projects are more popular than others. Nationally, the most common home renovations include interior painting, exterior painting, finishing a basement,

installing or replacing windows, and bathroom remodeling. Houzz polls have unveiled that renovating kitchens and bathrooms, new windows and porches, balcony and deck projects are among the most popular.

According to the Canadian lifestyle resource Icy Canada, which culled various data points and sources, window and door upgrades, kitchen and bath remodels and deck projects are the most popular renovations in Canada.

“Sir, What Shall We Do With All the Dead?” A Talk By Civil War Historian

Robert Shuey

Using radar to look down into the ground is Reno’s latest tool.

“This is all in the preliminary stages,” she said. “We found one section that is very interesting.”

Hymns are accompanied on the regal pipe organ, and Communion music is often from contemporary repertoire. The choir has begun to sing again! Sand Lake Historical Society

2023 Schedule

SLHS will be presenting the following public programs, from January to

June 2023:

March 14th, The Rensselaer Glassworks. Phil Bernnard of the National Bottle Museum will discuss Rensselaer Glassworks, one of Sand Lake’s early industries (and gave us “Glass Lake”). Hear the history of the works, the succession of owners, and the technology of 18th and 19th century glassmaking. Phil is asking attendees to bring any “Glass Lake glass” specimens they have, too.

April 11th, Covid-19 History Project. Commit-

tee report and presentations and a sharing of experiences from the SLHS Covid History Project. Let’s make Covid history!

May 9th, Annual Meeting. Elections, annual report to the membership – and more!

June 3rd, (tentative)

Annual Gala. Final date and location to be announced. Don’t miss this highlight of our year!

June 13th, The Pretty Fantastic Mr. Fox. Albert Rodmond Fox, industrialist, glassworks owner, State Senator, mover-and-shaker, and the Fox who gave us Fox Mansion. Learn about one of Sand Lake’s early leaders and speculate on why we live in Averill Park and not “Foxboro.”

All SLHS programs (unless otherwise noted) are held at the Sand Lake Town Hall Courtroom, 8428 NY Rte. 66, Averill Park, beginning at 7:00 pm. More information at http://sandlakehistory. org/. Like us on Facebook.

Are You Ready for Your Lenten Journey?

Yes, it is that special time of year once again. The humbling yet exhilarating season of Lent is upon us. You may be looking for opportunities to interact with fellow “travelers” during this time of self-reflection.

Well then, how about the ecumenical Friday Lenten Services to share the good news with a variety of local clergy? They are held at the Church of the Covenant (the round church) in Averill Park.

A brief (about 30 min.) service begins at 12 noon and is followed by a soupand-sandwich lunch. The first is Friday, February 24 and they will continue every Friday through March 31

A free will offering will go to Unity House of Troy. Hope to see you there as we “travel” to our glorious destination, Easter on April 9!

Fred Erickson, Church of the Covenant
