Brush up on pet dental health

When are pets considered adults?

Companionship, unconditional love and security are just some of the perks of pet ownership.

People who bring pets into their homes understand that a certain commitment comes with becoming a pet owner. Pet owners recognize they need to provide food, shelter and basic healthcare for their pets, but they may not recognize the role dental health plays in helping pets be as healthy as possible.

The American Animal Hospital Association notes that dental disease can start early in a pet’s life. By the age of three, most dogs and cats will have some level of dental disease. If dental disease is left untreated, pets may suffer from inflammation, infection and even chronic pain.

The animal health and wellness site VetStreet says that more than 70 percent of cats and dogs over age four are affected by periodontal disease. Bacteria from poor dental health may spread to other organs and cause illnesses. Recognizing the signs of pet dental disease and taking steps to alleviate it can keep pets healthy.

• Acknowledge bad breath. Bad breath is not something that comes with the territory of having a pet. Odor from a dog or cat’s mouth may indicate a problem such as stomatitis, a common feline condition that causes inflammation to the oral tissues and gums.

• Start brushing pets’ teeth. Brushing a pet’s teeth can promote good oral health and potentially prevent serious problems along the way. Always use a pet-safe toothpaste, and talk to a veterinarian about a special dental diet.

• Invest in other dental products. Seek products that receive the approval of the Veterinary Oral Health Council to help maintain a pet’s oral hygiene. Avoid products like synthetic bones, antlers and other animal bones, which can fracture an animal’s teeth.

• Work with your veterinarian. Vets typically use X-rays to diagnose dental disease, as teeth may appear normal to the naked eye but still be diseased. Anesthesia is frequently used in dental evaluations and cleanings. It makes it safer and less stressful for the animal and the vet. Speak with your vet about the frequency of dental cleanings and care, asking any questions you may have about the safety and efficacy of anesthesia use.

Pet owners must prioritize their furry friends’ oral health. Though often overlooked, pets’ dental health is integral to their overall health.

Kittens and puppies grow up fast. One minute they’re small, fluffy balls of fur, and the next minute they’re taking up your entire sofa.

Young animals are full of seemingly boundless energy. Young pets may sprint from room to room as they explore the world around them, sniffing, scratching and chewing along the way. All of this can be adorable for the first few months, but many pet owners are left scratching their heads wondering when their pets are going to “grow up” and be less of a full-time job.

The pet resource Rover.com says that puppies are generally considered adults by the time they reach their first birthday. This may vary depending on the breed. The home life guide TheNest.com says that kittens take about a year to reach adulthood.

Just because a cat or dog is considered an adult does not mean he or she will behave more maturely. In fact, adulthood often means the pet simply won’t grow any more.

Many behavioral issues associated with young animals may continue into adulthood.

A pet’s journey to emotional maturity can take quite a while, but it will come.

Hormonal surges will even out, and the animal will begin to settle down. Only when that point is reached will pet owners get an idea of what their animals will be like over the long haul.

It can take a cat up to four years to reach emotional maturity. Dogs’ journeys to maturity will vary depending on the breed and the size of the animal. The pet food company Pedigree says a large dog breed will mature into an adult between 15 months and two years, while smaller breeds may only act like puppies for nine months.

Since emotional maturity varies from pet to pet, these signs may indicate it has happened or is just about there: • Settles down more readily and has fewer episodes of “the zoomies.”

• Listens better. • Responds to social cues from other animals.

• Older animals treat the animal like an adult. • Responds appropriately to training.

• Doesn’t get into the same level of puppy or kitty trouble around the house.

Even as cats and dogs mature physically and emotionally, they may still have some bouts of youngster behavior. But in general, after a year or two pets start to show their true colors and behave more maturely.

For new fire chief, a historic week Symington first woman to lead Brunswick departments, oversee emergency response

The Mountain View Fire Company responded to its first call of 2021 on Jan. 2 and set a historic first for the town’s volunteer firefighters.

Mountain View Fire Chief Lisa Symington became the first woman to take the helm of one of the town’s five fire departments on Jan. 1.

The next day she oversaw her first emergency response as chief, the top firefighting official in the company.

“You have to be aware of everything,” said Symington, 32, about the difference in leading the EMS call instead of just participating as a department member.

A 15-year veteran of Mountain View, Symington said she’s looking forward to learning from each new experience as chief and being a role model for the three other women in her

department and across the rest of Rensselaer County. Symington currently is the only woman serving as a department’s fire chief in the county.

Former Chief John Houser Jr. said Symington will be outstanding as fire chief, as she builds on her experience and strives for excellence.

“She’s been a dedicated member of the department. She’s a good motivator, a good leader.

I have all the confidence leaving the department in her hands. She’s definitely a go-getter,” said Hauser, who is now serving again as a firefighter.

Symington’s rise to fire chief began when she was a senior at Averill Park High School and heard a presentation on serving as a volunteer firefighter. Growing up around Troy, she

Owner faces tenant rights law case

A property owner in the town of Nassau is apparently the first landlord in Rensselaer County to be charged under the state’s tenants’ law passed in 2019 after she allegedly shut off power to an occupied apartment on Thanksgiving.

allegedly shutting off the power off to Shallyn Provedor’s apartment on Route 66 in East Nassau while she prepared Thanksgiving dinner two months ago.

The Rensselaer County district attorney’s office confirmed the charges Friday. However, Guerrero’s attorney, James Kleinbaum, said he was only aware of the child endangerment charges.

Provedor said she called police after Guerrero turned off the power, and again when the property owner turned off the water, but said she did not receive a warm

Bipartisan Statement About the Events in the Capitol BRUNSWICK - The Brunswick Republicans and Democrats join with many local Republicans and Democrats in our unqualified condemnation and horror at the events of last week in our nation’s Capitol Building.

The last time this hallowed building was breached in such violent fashion was by invading British soldiers, on August 24th, 1814, when they ransacked the Capitol and set it on fire. You can still see the burn scars from those events in the building today.

Tragically, there will likely also be scars left in the building from this most unpatriotic, domestic insurrection as well, standing forever in evidence of the divisiveness of our current political atmosphere. As patriots, we must restore faith in

our country and its institutions. This insurrection threatened the sanctity of our political rituals, as well as the safety of our lawmakers of both parties in Congress.

Charges of election fraud must stop. As a resident in Rensselaer County, we have gotten to know the wonderful people who work for our Board of Elections. They are comprised of collegial pairings of Republicans and Democrats who work beautifully and tirelessly together with genuine dedication to make our elections happen and happen smoothly, even in a global pandemic. Boards of Election all across our country work in this bipartisan way and, far from being viewed with suspicion and facing threats of physical violence in their homes, they should be praised for their integrity and sincere commitment to securing our right to free and fair elections in a 21st-century

“I had my first drill in charge as chief on Tuesday. It was virtual,” Symington said.

“Training is a big thing for me.”

Symington wants to build a FAST training facility on site for Mountain View, which is headquartered at 2 Shafter Ave. just off Mountain View Avenue. FAST is the acronym for firefighter assist and search team, which is specially trained firefighters who stand by to help pull out firefighters trapped in a blaze.

“It’s intense. You really have to be a team,” Symington said.

Brunswick Supervisor Phil Herrington expects Symington will achieve that and strengthen the town’s firefighting abilities.

“She will do an excellent job. I’m real excited that she is the first woman to be fire chief in the town of Brunswick. The best part is, she’s enthusiastic,” Herrington said.

Symington and her husband, Al Symington, have two children, Mackenzie, 5, and Emery, 2. She works for Rensselaer County Child Protective Services.

Volunteering, Symington said, has led her to form friendships from Pittstown and Hoosick through Brunswick down to the county’s southern communities. The strongest friendships are in Mountain View.

“I could pull out my phone and call 25 different people and get 25 responses,” she said.

What is important is keeping in mind the public and how to respond to their calls, Symington said. “It might be a routine call. For them when they call 911 it’s an emergency.”

Garrard, who is working with Provedor in Nassau, said she was brushed off when she called police to report Provedor’s water being shut off.

“I reached out to law enforcement about that immediately, and the same law enforcement agency has basically said to me, ‘Look, we intervened once.

The tenant has to start helping herself.’”

Troy’s past evoked in downtown building’s lobby Artist celebrates three of city’s neighborhoods in single painting

Where once sat a pint-sized drivein bank better suited to suburbia, the corner of Fourth and Congress Streets in downtown Troy is now occupied by a contemporary apartment building of an appropriately urban scale. The Vicina stands five stories tall with 80 units and was completed in the fall by Rosenblum Companies, an Albany-based development and management firm. A few years ago and only a few blocks away, Rosenblum converted and expanded the ornate former headquarters of the Troy Record into another residential building called The News.

“Vicina” is Italian for neighbor and to honor the neighborhood and its rich history, the developers commissioned a new work, an impressive 12.5 feet by 6 feet, from local artist Christopher Murray. His painting is on permanent display in the building’s lobby. It’s a colorful and jagged relief of overlapping images that evoke life as it once was in the Collar City.

“I always held in the back of my mind representing this specific area of Troy in the micro and the macro. Some cool visual movement brings the eye to various nooks and corners of the painting,” says Murray.

The piece consists of three large wooden panels. Onto this blank field Murray glued some 100 blocks of flat wood, each cut to scale in order to recreate the street grid of the center of the city. Also mounted on the panels are countless slivers of balsa wood aligned in curving pathways to rep-

resent the train tracks that once snaked in and around the city. Waves of caulk located below the street map suggest the currents of the Hudson River.

Murray calls this assemblage a “relief sculpture” and it became his canvas for a painting of three storefronts, an Italian grocery, a cobbler and a bakery. The pallet of colors was chosen to represent the three neighborhoods that converge at the site — downtown, Little Italy, and the pottery district.

“Painting, color and collage are in all my works. I’m fascinated by textures,” says Murray. “The hardest aspect here was trying to do representational painting over distressed surfaces. I considered it an opportunity to stretch my wings.”

The idea for a commissioned work came from Jeffrey Mirel, a vice president at Rosenblum who is also a noted arts advocate and founder of the Albany Barn. Murray recalls that they got acquainted more than a decade ago when Mirel attended art openings of the Albany Underground Artists.

“Jeff was looking for something that reflected the history of the location and had an urban, gritty feel. He wanted it to be tactile, like you wanted to touch it, something that had actual dimensions, not just shadows painted on. I thought of how the city streets build up years of history, layers of street life with grunge and rawness,” says Murray.

The prolific artist works in a variety of styles and is especially known for depic-

tions of nature. One series is of vertiginous but imaginary mountains constructed of layered strips of foreign newspapers. There’s also a long run of vibrant blossoms swelling on a giant scale. Among the latter is a depiction of scarlet red orchids against a solid black field, which hangs in the glass enclosed parlor on the first floor of the Vicina.

Despite frequent immersion in the natural world, the concrete and brick cityscape of Troy was an easy leap. Murray, who recently turned 48, was raised in Pleasantdale, a development from the early 1970s located just north of Lansingburgh. He remembers as a kid putting in diligent work on a vegetable garden and spending lots of playtime in the adjacent farmlands. As teens, he and his peers regularly ventured into Lansingburgh where “we thought we were edgy.”

Creativity runs in both sides of Murray’s family. His mom is a painter and ceramic artist and he recalls, “We often had to clear the kitchen table to make way for her projects. My aunt did pen and ink pieces and ever since I was a little kid I thought those are so beautiful, I wish I could do something like that one day.”

When Murray entered undergrad studies at the College of St. Rose, he first majored in graphic design. This was just after the birth of desktop publishing and it wasn’t long before he sought freedom

Mayor Madden Announces Holiday Lights Recycling Program TROY, NY – Mayor Patrick Madden today announced the City of Troy is partnering with Scouts BSA Troop 2526 this winter to collect broken or non-working holiday lights as part of a citywide recycling program. from the machines and switched to studio art. “I didn’t want to sit at a monitor to make art,” he says.

Almost immediately after graduation Murray landed a teaching position with Shenendehowa Central School District where he’s remained for 26 years, becoming the second-longest tenured faculty member in the district. His wife, Kerry, teaches elementary school and their son Jackson is enrolled at Skidmore College.

They live in Niskayuna.

For the Vicina project, the folks at Rosenblum shared with Murray their extensive research on the history of the plot and its environs. Among the documents were photos of ceramic wear that was produced in the pottery district, a strip of Fourth Street that dates to the 18th century. This prompted another childhood memory for Murray — walking with friends along the train tracks of north Troy where they often came across ceramic shards. He recalls, “We’d find pieces of pottery that looked exactly like what I found in the research.”

There’s a wonderful winter world waiting for those who want to enjoy nature during the cold season. Being outside can be a safe way to socialize, exercise and hold off the winter blues. If you’ve never tried snowshoes or a winter walk, one of our family programs may be a great chance to do so. The saying goes that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. So, put on some layers, a warm hat, gloves and socks and explore winter! The Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center has the following events to offer in January.

The Friday Family Fitness Foray: Every Friday, January - March: 10am -11:30am - Every Friday this winter from 10am -12pm we will be exploring a different area of the park attempting to cover every inch of the park’s many trails while searching the woods for seasonal wonders. These programs end at lunch time so pack a picnic lunch to enjoy following the program! Preregistration required for each weekly session. Reserve snowshoes if needed for $5. All ages welcome but must be able to hike 2 miles.

Find and Follow a Fox day: Wednesday, January 20: 1pm – 2:30pm We will spend two hours attempting to find the tracks of a fox and following them to gain insight into their seasonal behavior. This is your chance to spend two hours living in the shoes (or feet) of a fox. Hike will include bushwhacking (off trail hiking). For youth ages 7 and up.

Hello Warrior fans, while all other winter sports continue to be on hold, our bowling teams continue their season with successful performances throughout the week.

On 1/4, the girls bowling team had a dominating 5-0 win versus Saratoga. Anna Wicks had a 513 series and a 208 high game for AP. The girls took their first loss of the season on 1/6 to Ballston Spa by a score of 1-4. Savana Rudolph bowled a high game of 204 and a high series of 567.

Anna Wicks also had a 191 high game while Laney Brown had a 494 high series in the losing effort. The girls will take on Schenectady on 1/20 for their next match.

On 1/4, the boys bowling team dropped their match 0-5 against Saratoga. Hunter Willett bowled a high game of 214 and a high series of 604 in the loss. The boys team bounced back to defeat Albany by a score of 4-1 on 1/5.

Parker Brown led the way for AP with a high series of 712 and a high game of 257. Tucker Cylkoff also bowled a career high game of 241 in the Warrior’s win. The boys bowling team will face CBA on 1/14 in their next match.

This Week’s Scholar Athlete is Lillian Bursey.

Lillian plays tennis for the girls tennis team. Lillian began playing over the summer before her freshman year, and enjoyed the sport so much she signed up for the AP team that fall. Lillian has been on the team ever since.

To prepare for the tennis season Lillian lifts weights and practices with her teammates all summer long. Lillian says her favorite part about her sport is “being able to be a part of a team and being with my friends.” Lillian also said that the most difficult part about her sport is staying positive throughout a match, and that even when the match isn’t going well, you need to keep a positive mindset. Tennis has helped Lillian learn to avoid overthinking and trust her skills during a match. Lillian hopes to continue playing tennis throughout her life and continue improving her skills as she plays more.

In addition to her athletic success, Lillian excels academically. Lillian has a 3.7 GPA while taking a rigorous course load, including Advanced Placement Government and Politics. Lillian is a member of the National Honor Society, and is the secretary of Student Council. To balance school and tennis Lillian found it helpful to stay organized. Lillian often makes a schedule to ensure she finishes everything that she needs to do.

Lillian’s friends and family have inspired her to work hard in school and in tennis. Lillian’s friends and teammates have always been there to support and encourage her. Lillian would advise younger athletes to “never give up and stay positive even when it is difficult.” After high school Lillian plans on going to college and getting her bachelors degree in psychology. After getting her degree Lillian hopes to attend medical school to become a psychiatrist. We wish Lillian the best as she finishes her senior year and prepares for college.

COMMUNITY Averill Park Announces Kindergarten Registration for the 2021- 2022 School Year AVERILL PARK - The Averill Park School District has begun the process of registering boys and girls for the 2021-2022 Kindergarten Classes. If you, or someone you know, has a child who will be five years of age on or before December 1, 2021 please contact the district registrar at 674-7050 extension 7201 to make sure that the child is listed on our school census.

East Greenbush Supervisor’s Report, January 8, 2021 EAST GREENBUSH Happy New Year!!! 2020 was an extremely difficult year in many ways; I’m optimistic that things will get better in 2021.

The Town of East Greenbush has formed a Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative pursuant to Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order #203. This Executive Order mandates that any municipality with its own police agency must form a group (the Collaborative) which will “perform a comprehensive review of current police force deployments, strategies, policies, procedures and practices, and develop a plan to improve such deployments, strategies, policies, procedures and practices.” The East Greenbush Collaborative includes two elected officials, the Chief and

Assistant Chief of Police, and six members of the community with varying backgrounds in law enforcement, the law, the court system, and mental health services delivery.

Although the terms “reform” and “reinvention” appear in the title, we want to make it clear that we’re very proud of the East Greenbush Police Department. And while we know that a review of this nature can yield positive results we don’t see this is part of an effort to “defund the police” or paint a negative picture of EGPD. What we do want is your help in understanding the role our police department plays in the community, and any reflections you may have on interactions with the department. Thus we are asking that you go to the Town website, www.eastgreenbush.org, and take a few minutes to complete the ‘Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative – Community Survey.’

will help ensure that the community’s voice is heard in the preparation of the Plan.

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for December 2020 SCHODACK - I want to start off with wishing everyone a Happy New Year and I hope your holidays were spent with the ones you love however you choose to celebrate. 2020 was an interesting year to say the least, but thanks to the support of my fellow Town Board members and the hard work of our Town Employees and Department Heads, I feel our town did a good job responding to the challenges COVID presented and did our best to keep residents and employees safe while still delivering the essential services we provide.

As i write this we are dealing with the highest case loads we have seen this entire pandemic. As was expected by many in the public health field, all across the US we’ve seen a resurgence as colder weather has returned and we spend more time indoors. I want to encourage everyone to remain vigilant and take the preventative measures to try and slow the spread of the virus. We are beginning to see the vaccine become available to more and more people and it’s only a matter of time before we’ve gained the upper hand on the spread, but it’s imperative that we all

work together these next few months to ensure our medical system doesn’t become overwhelmed now after we’ve all worked so hard for so long. Thank you all for your hard work and sacrifices so far, especially those of you working on the front lines of this fight.

The recently completed Albany Hudson Electric Trail is now open and I encourage you to try it out as weather permits. Our Town offers an abundance of natural beauty and the trail is a great way to take it in. I have been working with Chief of Police John Hourigan and Highway Superintendent Ken Holmes to address and remedy some of the parking issues and I hope to see some expanded opportunities in the future.

And finally, I want to express my gratitude to our hard working Highway crew for their efforts on December 17th and the following days combating a record snowfall event.

Great work as always gentlemen in ensuring our roads are quickly and safely cleared!

One must realize if the average is 17 minutes, there are some people waiting longer. I have FOILed the 911 reports EMS reports from Rensselaer County 911, which is what I base my discussion on.

Having contracted ambulance service would also allow for mutual aid for Poestenkill from sur-

rounding towns (which we do not have now since we do not have an ambulance service). As I have always said, we are fortunate to have our Poestenkill First Responders and would be lost without them. The First Responders are limited by state regulations as to the degree of care they can offer.

apartment without commencing eviction proceedings or shutting off utilities. If a landlord lies or deliberately misrepresents the law, that could be considered harassment, too.

Yet when a renter calls police to report an alleged instance of harassment, police say they usually direct them to housing attorneys or tenant rights groups.

“It’s not uncommon for police officers to respond to landlord-tenant issues,” Albany police spokesman Steve Smith said. “We try to gather as much information as we can, and we usually direct specifically the tenants to United Tenants (of Albany) or civil court, so they can start whatever process they need to start there.” Law changes cause confusion Victoria Esposito, advocacy director for the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, said details of the latest eviction moratorium came out during the holidays, forcing courts and law enforcement to quickly get up to speed on the protections and regulations.

“It’s taken a bit for some of the courts to grapple with the eviction moratorium,” she said. “It took a little bit for everyone to get on the same page, but so far as I know, all the courts in our service area are observing the laws. But again, that is something we really want to keep an eye on.”

Landlords and attorneys representing them say the constant changes and adjustments to the laws make it difficult to keep up, and could be contributing to a disconnect on what protections and laws can be enforced.

“They’ve been changing the rules pretty much weekly about which notices have to be attached to the standard eviction notices,” said Kleinbaum, Guerrero’s attorney.

“There are certain COVIDrelated documents that have to be provided by the landlord to the tenant, and it is literally changing by the week.”

He could not speak specifically to Guerrero’s case last week, having just been retained as the landlord’s attorney, but remarked that he represents “mom and pop” landlords in over 100 pending eviction cases throughout the Capital Region.

“I’d say maybe a handful have a legitimate COVID situation where either they tested positive or they lost their job, but the vast, vast majority are people taking advantage of the landlords,” Kleinbaum said. “If anyone says differently they are lying or delusional.”

Many landlords have argued the same, remarking that they also are hurting financially and still need to pay the bills.

Exception to eviction halts scrutinized Housing advocates will also have to keep an eye on how local courts handle the one exception to the eviction moratorium, likely to be the subject of debate in courts over the coming months, said David Cross-man, a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society. All proceedings have been halted through Feb. 26 unless the case involves a nuisance tenant.

“The phrase that is used is ‘persistently and unreasonably behaving in a way that substantially infringes another person’s use and enjoyment of the property, or causes a substantial safety hazard,’” he said.

What merits that label, and subsequently the reason for eviction, will be the subject of debate in courts over the coming months, Crossman said.

Attorneys and advocates could see that play out as soon as Wednesday in Saratoga Springs.

City resident Nicole Roche said she received notice from a court last Friday that her hearing will continue as scheduled Wednesday. City Court Judge Francine Vero will decide whether Roche has created a potential safety hazard by leaving “combustible materials” on a fireplace covering and

other safety allegations leveled by her landlord.

Depending on the court’s decision on that, Roche could face eviction from the single-family home she rents on George Street.

“Where do I go when I’m restricted to one area and school district?” she said. “It’s literally in the middle of winter and there’s no place to go.”

It’s that one exception that allows an eviction to proceed that Garrard said she is watching closely.

“It is supposed to be a high standard,” she said. “I’m waiting to see how it’s interpreted locally. It’s not going to be uniform, or the same kind of standard that the law would expect to be met.”
