Wounded Times: A Conversation about PTSD CLIFTON PARK – Dr. Charles R. Kennedy, Clinical Psychologist and PTSD Program Director at the Albany VA Medical Center, will present the program “Wounded Times: A Conversation about PTSD” on Thurs., May 16, 7-8:30pm at the Halfmoon Library, Program Rooms A&B. Have you, a family member or friend experienced a highly stressful event, which causes unresolved pain and suffering? Veterans are exposed to such events during war and individuals in everyday life may also experience anxiety-provoking situations. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder, which can develop after exposure to any event resulting in psychological trauma. The condition is debilitating and often disruptive to all aspects of life. The good news is that PTSD can be treated. There will be time for questions from the audience. (P)

“Aging Begins the Day You Were Born BURNT HILLS – The United Methodist Women, of the Burnt Hills United Methodist Church, 816 Saratoga Road, Rt. 50, Burnt Hills, will host a program for the public on Wednesday, May 8, beginning at 7pm in Knight Hall. The Health and Wellness Ministry of the

Skeet Shooting Competition VICTORY – The Fish Creek Rod and Gun Club located on Route 32, south of the village of Victory (look for our sign), will begin skeet shooting competition on Sunday, April 28 at 10am. Mother’s Day at Knickerbocker Mansion SCHAGHTICOKE – Mother’s Day at the Knickerbocker Mansion begins with a Pancake Breakfast that is served from 8-11am; $6 for all you can eat. Armed Forces Day Parade MALTA – Attention Area Iraq and Afghanistan Vets: The Town of Malta Wants to Thank You! The Town of Malta is holding an Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, May 18 with a special theme to recognize and thank veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan for their service and to publicly welcome them home. The parade is set to begin at 10am and will start at the Malta Community Center on Bayberry Drive. It will proceed south on Route 9 through the first roundabout at the intersection with Route 67. The distance is approx. 1 mile. The committee has already lined up school bands, area fire departments and first response agencies that have supported the Patriot Day parades in the past. Attractive Trees and Shrubs for Our Area CLIFTON PARK – The Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library and The Country Gardens Club of Clifton Park will present an exciting presentation by Arborist Fred Breglia on Tuesday, April 30 at 7pm in the Program Rooms of the Library. Fred Breglia’s nickname is “Tree Man”, and with good reason. ISA Certified Arborist and Executive Director of the George Landis Arboretum in Esperance, NY. Fred is the Tree Man on WAMC’s Vox Pop and really knows his trees! Fred is an entertaining speaker who is a favorite each year the Capital District Garden and Flower Show. He will be telling us about attractive and unusual trees and shrubs that grow happily in soils like those in Clifton Park and Halfmoon – sometimes sandy, sometimes full of clay – and about how to plant and maintain them successfully. Marching Against Bullies BALLSTON SPA – On Friday, May 3, the Ballston Area Community Allies will host the 2nd Annual Bullying Awareness March. The March, which is led by local children who wish to voice their concerns about bullying, will begin at 4pm at the Ballston Area Community Center and end at the Old Iron Spring. Once the marchers have arrived at the Old Iron Spring Pavilion & Park, youth marchers will have the opportunity to speak with public leaders about their concerns about bullying and their ideas on how to make it end. The walk is approximately 0.4 miles and will conclude by 5pm. The March is open to adults, children and organizations who wish to speak out against bullying. Anyone interested in participating in the march should contact the Ballston Area Community Center at (518) 885-3261. Please plan on one chaperone per ten youth marchers. Annual Fundraising Luncheon for Care Links CLIFTON PARK – Mazzone Hospitality will be the site for the 9th Annual Luncheon to support Care Links of Southern Saratoga County, on Thursday, May 2 at its Clifton Park location. Doors will open at 12 noon with lunch served beginning at 12:30pm. FTD Support Group/Dr. Holub Presentation CLIFTON PARK – Join us for our next Frontotemporal Degeneration Meeting scheduled for April 30 at 5pm at Beacon Pointe Memory Care. Guest Dr. Richard Holub, will be discussing his exciting new trial entitled “Safety and Efficacy Study Evaluating TRx0237 in Subjects with Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Degeneration”. Learn more about the TRx0237 drug and its possible effects, eligibility for participation, and more. Dr. Holub is a neurologist based in Albany, NY with over 25 years experience in the study and treatment of Frontotemporal Degeneration and related dementias. For those that cannot attend, Dr. Holub will be giving a presentation on general frontotemporal degeneration information and his new drug trial on May 16 at 7pm here at Beacon Pointe (1 Emma Lane, Clifton Park, NY 12065). Ballston Spa Education Foundation Receives Donations BALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa Education Foundation (BSEF) was the recent recipient of $1,000 in funds from Stewart’s Holiday Match program. The Stewart’s Foundation has been a steadfast supporter of the BSEF through the years. Additionally, a significant donation of $1,000 was made to the BSEF’s Annual Appeal by American Legion Post 234 of Ballston Spa. The Board of Directors of the BSEF is tremendously grateful to these two major donors for their generous support of the Foundation’s mission of educational enrichment for the students of Ballston Spa schools. The Foundation will be announcing the grant award winners for its Spring grant cycle prior to the Ballston Spa Board of Education meeting on May 1 at 6:30pm at the Ballston Spa High School library. At that time, major donors will also be recognized. (P)

Vishneowski & Scavone Receive Awarded Scholarships BALLSTON SPA/SARATOGA – The Fort Miller Group is pleased to announce the winners of our 2013 college scholarships. The O.E.S. Hedbring College Scholarship was awarded to both Sydney Vishneowski of Ballston Spa and Jonathan Scavone of Saratoga Springs. Sydney and Jonathan have been awarded a $2,000 scholarship, which is renewable for each year that they continue their undergraduate education. Sydney plans to study Nursing at James Madison University and Jonathan is currently majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Clarkson University. Both students were selected based on academic achievement, community involvement and industriousness. (P)

Bulletin Board Northeast College Showcase at Gavin Park WILTON – The first annual Northeast College Showcase, featuring 35 teams from the northeast and Canada, will take place on April 27 and 28 at Gavin Park in the Town of Wilton. More than 700 student athletes from 35 teams will be participating. The tournament’s primary purpose is to provide an opportunity for these athletes, U16 to U18, to showcase their soccer skills to the college coaches in attendance. Capturing Saratoga BALLSTON SPA – The Saratoga County Historical Society has announced that they will host a juried art exhibition by the Ballston Spa High School photo, drawing and painting, studio, ceramics, and sculpture classes. The exhibit will open Friday, April 26 and will remain on display through Friday, May 17. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 3, from 5-8pm. The students explored the theme Capturing Saratoga, and were asked to look at landmarks, special places and people within the county. Saratoga County Arts Council Exhibition CLIFTON PARK – A Saratoga County Arts Council “Art in Public Places” Exhibition is on display in the 2nd floor Gallery at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, for the month of May 2013. Featured is the photography of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library Digital Photography Club, a group comprised of amateur to professional level photographers. (P)

Dealing With Loss CLIFTON PARK – Join Maryanne Malecki from The Haven in Schenectady, at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library for two programs dealing with death and the grieving process. In recent months, our community has had to deal with tragedy including the death of two young adults. Registration is requested for this program and can be made online, in person or by phoning the Library at 371-8622. When a Community Grieves: Wednesday, May 1 at 7pm. This program will include information and some practical suggestions to help adults – parents, teachers, neighbors – help themselves and the young people in their lives better cope with sudden death and loss. This program will include ways in which adolescent grief differs from that of adults, and is for adults only. Losing Someone Young: Thursday, May 2 at 6:30pm. This workshop is for

young adults in middle and high school. It is designed specifically to help young people understand and recognize the many ways in which loss affects their lives now and in the years to come. (P)

Digital Photography Club to Meet CLIFTON PARK – Adults are invited to attend a meeting of the Digital Photography Club, Thursday, May 2 at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library beginning at 7 pm; the group meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. This is an informal, memberdirected program designed to have fun and learn from each other. The group will primarily be geared to digital photography, but persons with conventional film cameras will be welcome as they will be able to learn and share information about how to take better photos. The overall goal will be to share information about all aspects of photography, including what kind of equipment to buy and how to make it work. All skill levels are welcome. Annual Spring Geranium Sale BALLSTON SPA – The Ballston Spa House and Garden Club is pleased to announce its third annual spring Geranium Sale. Available for sale are pink, white, purple, red, dark red, and salmon geraniums with buds and blooms in 4-1/2 inch pots at $4 each. Proceeds from the sale will supplement club efforts to provide funding for the following club initiatives: a scholarship to send a Ballston Spa middle school student age 1214 to Camp Colby in Saranac Lake in the summer for one week; a cash award for a deserving Ballston Spa high school senior that has been involved in horticulture or a related field; and other club projects such as the maintenance of the Pink Garden at the Ballston Spa Public Library and the Upper Trail Garden at the Jim Tedisco Fitness Trail. The public and local businesses are encouraged to place orders by calling club secretary Judy Esposito at 885-6416. WARRENSBURG – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County will be holding its 4th Annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction at Cronin’s Golf Resort in Warrensburg, NY on Saturday, August 24. Cooperative Extension is looking for items to be donated for the Silent Auction such as: tickets to area attractions, local artwork, gift baskets, gift certificates, etc. All proceeds from this benefit will be used to help financially support Cornell Cooperative Extension’s educational programs.
